- Hi there! Today we have a video about our Dark Brown Henna Dye.
The process can be a little confusing, so we wanted to make things easier for you to understand.
In this video, you will see how the henna is prepared for application.
You can get the Dark Brown Powder here:

Why should you choose The Henna Guys?
Our dye is 100% natural with no chemicals or additives. It's PPD free. Our products are vegan and cruelty-free. Our dye:
Colors naturally
Promotes hair growth
Helps improve manageability
Conditions hair and adds shine
Continuous use helps improve overall hair health
Ingredients:
🌿 Henna (Lawsonia inermis): Pure henna, milled into powder form before undergoing a triple-sifting process, forms the red-orange base of our henna hair dyes. We create different shades by blending henna with other natural ingredients.
🌿 Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria): When applied alone, pure indigo powder imparts a green- or blue-tinged tone to darker hair and is colorless on white and gray hair. When mixed with henna powder, indigo creates various shades of auburn, brown or black. However, red undertones usually appear in all colors but black.
🌿 Amla (Phyllanthus Emblica): Amla, a type of Indian gooseberry, boosts overall hair and scalp health when used as a hair mask or as an ingredient in henna hair dye. It promotes scalp circulation, helps strengthen roots and the scalp, enhances color, encourages hair growth, reduces the chance of premature graying and pigmentation loss, and helps improve manageability.
🌿 Bhringraj (Eclipta alba): Also known as false daisy, bhringraj promotes hair growth and helps reduce thinning. Bhringraj has antifungal and antimicrobial properties and helps boost scalp health. It softens and conditions hair, reduces the likelihood of hairfall, and helps prevent early graying.
🌿 Neem (Azadirachta indica): This natural antiseptic is packed with nutrients to help ward off hair and scalp dryness, dandruff, premature graying and poor scalp circulation. Neem is thought to stimulate hair growth and help reduce environmental hair damage.
Allergy Warning: Although our henna hair dye is made with natural ingredients, sensitivities and allergic reactions to even natural products are possible. If you do not know your allergies, Always start by doing a strand/skin test before applying any henna.

How to apply:
Our Dark Brown Henna is a two-step process.
Process 1: Pure Henna
1. In a glass bowl, mix pure henna with warm distilled water until you get a yogurt consistency. (You can use black coffee or black tea)
2. Once mixed, allow the henna to complete dye release process for 8-10 hours. If it hardens after 8-10 hours, simply add a few drops of water to loosen it again.
3. Divide your hair into four sections (this makes it easier to apply the henna to all your hair). Start from the roots of your hair and work your way down to the tips, making sure the strands are entirely covered. Once done, cover your hair with a shower cap (or saran wrap), and let the henna sit on your hair for 3 hours.
4. After the 3 hours, rinse the henna from your hair using cool water until the water runs clear.
5. Prepare the Dark Brown powder while your hair dries.
(Please be aware that after this first step, your hair will look/be red. Don't be alarmed. The second step will give you the brown color you're going for)
Process 2: Dark Brown
1. In a glass bowl, mix the dark brown powder with warm, distilled water until you reach a yogurt consistency. (If you want a richer brown, you can use black brewed coffee or black tea instead- it doesn't matter if its caffeinated or not).
2. Let the dark brown mixture activate for 40 minutes. If it hardens, just add a few drops of water (or coffee) to loosen it up.
3. Divide your hair into four sections. Start applying the henna from root to tip, making sure all your hair is covered.
4. Cover your hair with a shower cap/saran wrap, and let the mixture sit on your hair for at least 3 hours (the longer you leave it on, the darker the brown will be).
5. Rinse hair out with cool water until the water runs clear.
6. Enjoy your new hair color!

Awesome I love dying my hair with henna
Hi! I guess I'm a little confused with my purchases. Previously, I have dyed my hair for a while with your guys' natural red henna and I loved it. I've been doing that for a few months. Just recently I wanted to try brunette, like a deep chocolate color. I purchased medium brown and dyed my hair with it today, but it still just looks very red, almost the same as before. Did I do something wrong? What do you recommend in order to get to a dark brown, should I try this two step process and try the dark brown henna? Or should I just buy indigo powder because I have a red base? I'm not sure. Thank you:)
Definitely do the 2 step method but please contact us via email. As one of our experts can help you with details. sales@thehennaguys.com
I had the same thoughts.. Do we rinse out step one pure henna and dry our hair, then apply step two dark brown? Or does step one henna stay in and apply the dark brown over it to combine? Clarification needed!
Rinse your hair after completion of step one and let it dry. Then once it's dry, you would start step 2. My deepest apologies for not clarifying that.
Hi. The instructions it came with do not specify this. It made it sound like we have to add both powders at the same time which is what I did. =(
Very good question!
@@letiacastro8273 What was the result?
Hi! Can I do the first step in one day and the second step on another day or does the second application have to follow immediately after the first application?
You can follow up with the second step on the next day. We just recommend waiting no more than 48 hours to do so. -Hilary
I like to wait a day in between applying the henna and the indigo powder. I won't throw away the leftover henna after the first application. I'll keep it covered with plastic in case I missed any spots or it looks patchy.
It would have been nice to see a before and after shot - thank you
Hi, we do have other videos on our channel that before and after. This was just a how to mix video.
Hello! Is it okay to put it on your eyebrows ? If so, how long should it stay on? And would you just do the 2nd step for this process?
Although is a natural plant based product, we do not recommand near your eyes.
I actually brush it through my eyebrows every time making sure it doesn’t get in my eyes and it works . Looks great too because it matches the hair
If the dark brown isn’t dark enough, can you add more indigo to it for a darker result? or leave it on longer? don’t want black but a deeper brown.
Hi Milodangelo! You may add indigo powder to help deepen the color and you may leave it on longer was well:) I would first add indigo powder to the mixture and leave on 3 hours. Hope this helps:)
I find that this isn't completely true. It doesn't need to be smooth as cake batter to coat your hair, it just helps a lot to have it be smooth like yogurt. And metal bowls didn't effect my colour. It still had the same colour as when I used plastic bowls and lasted just as long. Also salt doesn't do anything at all. I'm not even sure how that one got started because there is no proof that. Even the family from India that lives across from me has said the same hint but they highly recommend oil as it is really good for the hair like a conditioner and it helps the henna out a lot keeping the shine and colour enrichment, and they're right. It is amazing. Thank you for the video though. I always enioy seeing how different people use henna when it comes to their hair. Thank you again for the informative video.
Hi Cathleen! Thank you for providing insight from your henna experience. A lot of people often have similar questions and it's great to hear from fellow henna users. You are completely right about metal bowls not effecting the color. We only recommend not using metal because it helps to oxidize the dye. Everyone's experience with henna and adding additional substances like salt is different. We do recommend adding 1 teaspoon of salt for colors with indigo/indigo only, like Jet Black, to help with grey coverage. Oil and conditioners are wonderful for your hair and adding in addition to the henna mixture! Thank you again! This information can be very helpful for henna users.
If you use Coconut Oil it will brighten the hair and make it look a lighter Color! Also Don't use Metal Bowls or spoons!
How long are the mixtures stable once mixed? It says to let the henna sit 8-10 hours, but how long can it rest before you have to use it?
The pure henna and the dark brown have different resting times. The pure henna should be used within 12 hours of mixing. The dark brown should be used after 45 mins of resting. The dark brown has indigo in the mixture and will develop faster than the pure henna, this is why it has a shorter rest time and will need to be used after mixing.
Can this method be used on top of chemically colored hair? Sorry if this was already asked. I scanned through the comments and didn't see anyone ask.
Yes, you will not experience any damage using henna on top of chemically treated hair. You will notice henna will actually help repair damaged hair. Always do a strand test to see how the henna colors your hair & be aware that the henna will have to strip the chemicals from your hair before it can color your hair, and it may take 2-3 applications for the henna to color properly.
حسب علمي ان الحنا لا يوضع على الشعر المصبوغ كيمائيا الا بعد ٦ شهور
Firstly. love, LOVE your products! Tried for the first time and did a mix of light and medium brown and it was awesome. Also did the med brown on its own. Can't believe how well this stuff works, was really not expecting that and prepared to have to redo/ 'fix' it etc.
Question: What exactly is in the Dark Brown packet? (not the pure Henna one it also comes with). Is that just indigo with the other nourishing items mentioned in the vid, or is there any henna in there as well? I guess I'm asking, if you want it less dark, do you just use less of it/ leave it on for less time? like how do you control for diff. darkness levels with indigo.
Edit: just wanted to add: I already have the medium brown package, too, but if I want a color that's not quite dark brown but not medium either (ie an in-between shade), then what would you suggest? I also got your alma powder and indigo alone too so I can 'customize' and experiment/diy each time. :) So do you suggest adding in some alma to the dark brown mix, or adding indigo to the medium brown mix?
Dark brown contains henna, indigo, amla, bhringraj and neem powders. To make the medium brown slightly darker, I would recommend adding in 1-2 tablespoons of the dark brown powder. Make sure to use black coffee as the liquid, to help deepen the color more. -Hilary
@@GoldieHoffmanComedian omg its really long
Following
5 hour process. Wow I wish I had that much time for myself 😭
yeah but I usually apply it and do all house chores or even when watching tv. Times goes by so fast
Question 🙋🏻♀️ So the 2nd packet is just indigo, neem and Amla? No henna mixed in that as well. Wouldn’t that make it black? That sounds like a regular degular 2 step for black hair. If so I’m glad I seen this. I will mix the two to a 25/75 henna indigo for dark brown hair.
Hi Tracy, you can mix the packet how you feel works best for you and your hair. This is the method that we found works best to get that dark brown hair coloring.
Hi! Has the 25/75 been working out for you? I refuse to do a 2-step routine but the pure henna is making my hair redder than I'd like.
@@Jane_1994why do you refuse to do 2 step
Do you use the indigo after you have washed out the henna or do you apply the indigo on top of the already applied henna
You want to rinse the henna out, then apply the dark brown.
So the complete application time you're going to leave the first one on for 3 hours, wash and dry the hair for the second step and leave that on also for 3 hours?
Yes you got it!
Can I put this over my dyed bright red hair? Will it cover? Also I want a chocolate brown color. Is that possible? My hair under the red is a light medium brown
Yes, you can. We would recommend a strand test to help you see the end result.
girl did it work cuz my hair turned black...
... can you put both packets together from the beginning before adding water.
If this is done by accident, can you still move forward with the rest of the process.
You can, but this can result in lighter coloring with more red tones.
A little confused I want to stop using hair dyes shop bought.Do I do the first lot of henna mix first wash hair and then apply the second coat or do they go on top of each other ?
Hi Beena, You would need to apply pure henna first, leave on for 3 hours, rinse, and then apply dark brown leave on for 3 hours. They do not go on top of each other. Hope this helps:)
@@TheHennaGuys yes it does many thanks shall try this over Christmas break. Was worried my hair would go red spent alot of money getting all the red out when hairdresser didn’t do it right.Like my hair brown black is too harsh for my skin tone .
So the entire process takes 6 hrs total? 3 for henna and another 3 for indigo powder?
Hello! Can I use regular alcohol vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar?
White vinegar can be used, but you have to use a smaller amount. Just due to the fact that it can dry out the hair too much. So you would only need 1 tsp or so. -Hilary
Can i buy just indigo powder if I've recently dyed with your medium brown but got orangey and want darker?
Yes, you can. Indigo will make your hair darker, so please strand test before applying all over and check your hair often while strand testing to make sure your hair does not become darker than you are wanting.
@@TheHennaGuys thx. One more question, could I mix the indigo and medium brown together safely? Thx
Can I just use the dark brown powder after having used the burgundy couple of weeks ago and it is already reddish. I just want to darken it.
Hi Sara! Absolutely, the main part is to have grey coverage. Dark brown needs the red base. Since your hair has the red you are all good to use dark brown right away:) Hope this helps!
Hi there! Do i need to buy the pure henna and the indigo powder separately? or if i buy the henna packet for dark brown hair it will include the indigo powder in the same packet?
If you Soley purchase the dark brown henna hair dye everything you need will be provided in the package. A pack of pure henna, a pack of the dark brown/indigo powder, and an applications instructions pamphlet.
Hi there how can I make my hairs light brown from henna? I have off black hairs it's not rich dark black hairs. Please suggest which henna I should use and can I put chamomile tea as it is natural temporary hair Lightner. Please help. Thank you very much 💗.
Hello. You can try our light brown but unfortunately our henna can not lighten hair since there are no chemicals to do so.
@@TheHennaGuys ok thanks 😊
What's the difference between pure henna, red henna, and orange red? I noticed the ingredients in each of these is the same?
The ingredient is the same. However, each one is processed thru extreme heat differently to help achieve those certain colors!
Should the coffee be warmed or cold?
We recommend cold coffee or tea
Can we add oil to mixture of henna so its not too drying
If too much oil is added, it can create a barrier between the henna and hair. This will make for an uneven coverage and/or lighter to no stain. If you add oil, only add a few drops. You can condition your hair after rinsing the henna to help with the dryness. Also, using a leave in conditioner can help.
@@TheHennaGuys can I deep condition after henna?
iF YOU MIX THE INDIGO COLOR TOO EARLY CAN YOU STILL USE IT BEYOND THIRTY MINUTES FOR STEP 2
Unfortunately, Indigo powder looses its potensy if left out longer then 30 mins. You wont achieve a darker tone
Isn't there any henna that can just give you dark brown to cover greys really don't have 7 hours for a process i have to do every 3 weeks cause of greys
To get a full coverage on graying hair, it is best to do the 2-steps.
Will dark brown be lighter if left in less long?
The dark brown is a 2-step process, if you want lighter shade of brown, we do offer a medium or light brown.
Could you use an electric mixer?
I think you would be able to. Just make sure to use the lowest setting and keep in mind that henna is a stain and can potentially stain your mixer.
can you use any other liquid than coffe for mixing the henna?
Yes you absolutely can. You can use distilled water, brewed tea, etc. We have even heard of milk being used as the mixing liquid. -Hilary
@@TheHennaGuys ok thank you for the awnser :)
Do we rinse before applying the second step?
Also can I use an electric mixer to mix the henna?
Good Morning! You do rinse your hair and let it air dry before applying the second step. We always recommend avoiding using metallic mixing tools since metal will oxidize the mixture.
Hi! If someone has a natural ashy dark brown, never chemically processed. If i will use this pure henna and dark brown henna to cover few of the gray hair, will it turn haircolor into warmer? My friend dont like any red/worm undertones in her haircolor.
Hello! The dark brown shouldn't come out with a warm tone, it only makes hair darker. Definitely do a strand test if you are worried about the results. I recommend using brewed coffee or tea as the liquid base and adding 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to the mixture. If she has longer/thicker hair, you can increase the amount to 2 - 3 teaspoons. The ACV will help with gray coverage, though since they are stubborn and if the hair is new to henna, it might take a second application before the hair will really take/get used to the henna.
Is it necessary to use the indigo powder could i just use the henna
If you are looking to have your color dark-brown, then yes you need to. Pure henna will give you orange red color. Hope this helps.
I wish you showed the result...
Sorry for the confusion! Video is mainly about mixing the product. We do have tones of other videos showing dark brown results. Watch our tik tok, or even out website with pictures)
@@TheHennaGuys thank you for your answer!
Can u use a blender oh but that has metal inside
We suggest using a non-metal utensil.
This video doesnt mention cleaning and drying your hair in between step 1 (application of pure henna,) and step 2 adding the dark brown powder ). But yet ur instructions on pamphlet says under adding the dark brown powder to make sure your hair is clean and dry?? Your instructions need lots more clarification. Ugh!!
.
Oh goodness! We're sorry about that. For step 1, you will need to completely rinse the henna out of your hair and let it fully dry. Then after your hair is completely dry, you can start step 2.
Did anyone tried this method ?
Most of our consumers use dark brown as a two-step method.
pro tip - use a whisk from the dollar store to stir the henna
Thats too much! Its basically a 6 hour process to dye your hair! Why can't you just do them together?
Doing the steps together can result in a lighter coverage. The pure henna gives a base color to white or grays hairs, helping to get that darker color.
It won’t work together. It’s a long process but it’s worth it because it leaves your hair shiny and luxurious for months
All of that and no results. Bleh.
We do have other videos related to this:)
Do you sell it on ebay?
Yes but we have a special holiday sale going on our website!
