The Oedipus Complex for Lacan (5 of 5): Mother as minus sign

  • What are the outcomes of the Oedipus complex? Borrowing from Darian Leader's 'What is Madness?' we can suggest that three psychical 'objectives' are achieved. Firstly, meaning is anchored. We now have a response to the desire of the mother, which is informed by both the Name-of-the-Father (conventions and laws of the symbolic order, now installed in the subject) and the phallus (the 'radar of desire' for the subject). Secondly, jouissance (libidinal enjoyment) is given a location outside of the body. Thirdly, we are able to situate ourselves at a viable, safe distance from the big Other.

Thank You very much, Prof. Hook, for making and disseminating these videos; your videos are the event of learning both in terms of pedagogy and content. After reading the book by Vanheule, The Subject of the Psychosis, your videos and the content make clear and distinctive sense. Well, I have a question, which you discussed as well in the video at the bit, Why is android in terms symbolic through the name of the father, which domesticates the desire together with the other functions necessarily named as Phallic? why necessarily associate it with something Masculine?

Hi Derek, I was wondering does the Mirror Stage happen after Oedipus Complex? or is it happening simultaneously? and my other question is since social prohibitions or the name of father is located in symbolic order; and thereby, when someone says castration of symbolic order or big other, this does not mean that the whole symbolic order collapses, right? it's just that you keep your safe distance within symbolic order as even symbolic order has some cracks to it? Because if it means dismantling of symbolic order, then the real and imaginary would also collapse. so I am assuming it means to keep safe distance while placed within symbolic order so as to not get consumed by it?

The object of attachment most likely defines the future sexuality of the analysand, regardless of being born male or female.
This is not my hypothesis, yet it certainly makes sense to me.
The underlying emotional conflict with the opposite sex parent will drive these emotionally destroyed individuals to homosexual fulfillment, or they will likely become homophobic later in life.
I can imagine that asexual individuals have a host of other unresolved issues.
EDIT: I want to be clear; I also believe that there is a strong genetic component to one's sexual identity that is natural and ought to be universally accepted.
How do Laconians address such issues? I would welcome a discussion of any of my thoughts presented in this series on Laconians' thinking.
I can only substantiate my hypotheses based on personal Experiential study from self/family observations and memories beginning at 2+ years old.
I was raised by Authoritarian Christians. I believe that much mental illness is generational.
I abandoned Christianity prior to my first analysis because I needed help, and praying was useless for me. I gave all my early efforts to Christianity. At 17, I read Freud's Interpretation of Dreams, not understanding it, yet intuitively knowing its importance.
When I felt that I needed another analysis, I was not trusting the process based on the lengthy time I previously attempted a cure. Yes, it helped in many ways, but far from being conflict free, the transference was miserable. I only recently understood why both of us were off.
Since I could not possibly afford psychoanalysis again, I decided to figure out a way to understand myself and my dysfunctional parental family. Then, I understood nothing of my past. Now I understand 90% of myself and enough of my parents and 3 (all) of my siblings. What are my regrets, now? Only that I wish it had been different. No one is to blame. Life takes its toll from everyone. I asked my mother at age 12 if I could see a psychologist, having read about them in the school library. She said no. I asked her when she was 103 - why she said no. She said that she didn't think it would help. Family therapy, when children are young, is what is needed.
I can not express the deep sorrow I have for the loss of my now, deceased family. I ask myself if I'd rather be confused 😕 about my chaotic life or if I can accept the sorrow of knowing how and why life unfolded as it did. I only know that when I die, I know I completed my mission to myself. Robert Sapolsky is correct. Determinism rules.
Apologies for offending anyone. This was not my intent. 😢😮

So what happens when the big other and the self become one?

I think you said that the Oedipus complex is a more general concept than just a developmental stage, yet you mostly talked in terms of developmental stages. Where else does this concept apply?
