As a Cutjack M390 owner... I had tingles in the back of my neck watching this after the Modus debacle. PHEW!!! Hopefully all of us Steel Will owners can back away from the ledge (and the keyboard) now!!!
Slicey Dicey it only means that they have no decent quality control at the production - one batch is good, next one with a f-uped heat treatment. Only way to be sure is test your knife on a sesale rope)
It's also possible that the sharpener that did the Modus that Pete was testing burned the edge. May not necessarily be the heat treat. if they are using belt grinders to sharpen, it doesn't take much to overheat the steel and burn the edge, which will have a similar effect as a bad heat treat. Not saying you're wrong, but can't generalize either. I had a cutjack in d2 and the thing was a beast. I used it out in the woods and cut cardboard and did food prep and I sharpened the blade only a few times. Like any production company, there are lemons and the Modus in question is more than likely the exception, not the norm
Slicey Dicey, What is your Serial Number/ Manufacture date ? I can tell you if it is the same batch.
Mine is totally fine. I checked it out (not as rigorously as Pete does) and had no issues whatsoever. Cut through acres of cardboard that I'd been putting off (18 large bike boxes), gave it a sharpen and it performed just as I'd expect M390 to perform.
@@Luke-mz5zt serial number of this knife is 0080
Similar grind. Same steel. Same manufacturer. Same angle. Same sharpener. Same dude's hand. Same rope. Same cutting board. Sure, maybe a few variables in there could account for being off by anywhere from.... I don't know......5-40ish cuts. But 350?
In my mind, you had never messed anything up. This video, I think, totally solidifies that you hadn't.
I also think it might sell a few cutjacks......even at a zillion dollars in g10.
Your videos are great, man. Even if it's just the cat.
Nice to see the M390 on the Cutjack perform as it should.
Coming back your vids after a while is pretty awesome tbh. Your channel is an archived gold standard of true science applied to claims of companies and also the promotion of the products.
Saying "well done" to you is an understatement.
Sooo
Nice job?
Thanks so much Pete for this great bit of info- I'll look forward to seeing further results, more testing & followup videos- your doing a fantastic service to the knife community & we all very much appreciate your efforts.
yours came today frank, you awesome man, you
That's exactly what I had with my modus! I stopped at 417 but it was cutting paper still and I'm glad I got a good example of when you stop and I bet another 33 cuts and I would have been there. Nice!
How can I give likes to your vids more than once? This production was a step above the norm. Your due diligence in post-p shows! Well done Mr Pete!👍🏻👍🏻
Another great video Pete. Looks like Steel Will M390 is pretty impressive based on your data points...above 20CV and 10V!
havent done those two with the super nice edges, worksharp only, but t would definitely swing with them I’m sure
Thank you for you content, POV, and data. You are doing good work.
I wish you would have tested the factory angle vs the 17, but thanks for all the testing
you do for us.
I'm still hoping you try the cutjack in D2.
An important follow-up test. Well done Pete!
I also have this knife. Your results made me feel better lol. It’s a smooth knife for sure. Thanks for all your tests, and for the list of all the results. You rock Pete!! Keep up the great work
Once again another great test with your set standards keep up the good work and advice love it
Just goes to show the pros can get faulty bar stock or their heat treat wrong from time to time and release into the general market . You do great transparent tests. Keep up the great work. Thanks
Well done. I hope your replacement Modus is fine. Keep us informed. Thanks for what you do!
I bought the D2 green version recently . I also made a hardness testing on Rockwell machine, it come out 58 HRC, i was expecting more close to 60, considering a D2 steel. The producer hardness range is between 58 to 60.
Thankyou for the content you give us this is the first channel i look at when im ready to buy a knew nife
Thank you for doing this! I'd love to see you test the D2 version of the Steel Will Cutjack as well.
It's a Valentine's miracle!
Very good. Thank you. We sure have been looking forward to this.
I never did get a chance, to test mine this past weekend.
: - )
i think your method is just fine, it sort of shows the variables you would experience in the real world, with regular use.
AWESOME test...THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO SIR!!
I own Lionsteel Myto with M390 blade for over a year now, love the steel but even thinking of sharpening this thing feels like a guilty sentence for owning this knife.
If you consider buying M390 blade, proper precision diamond or ceramic sharpener is a must have.
Now thats more like it . I love these rope cutting videos. This still doesn't mean the Modus is out of the woods yet, chances of you gettig a single bad one are very slim, which in my mind tells me the whole batch of M390 used is bad , not just the one you had , but the whole batch. And does anyone know how many knives are made from one batch ? 50 - 100 - 1,000 ? , sadly there are still a lot of bad ones out there . The only way to truly know is for poeple to test their knife . Keep up the excellent work , Pete .
Screw the knife, I'm in love with your shirt!
wzrbs can you lend me a jar of love 💕
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors oh, my demo tape😥
Outstanding vids. I cut through mass amounts of cardboard daily. A D2 blade won't even make it throughout my work day. Would there be a noticeable difference in changing to m390? Thanks in advance.
Great video.. ignore the haters.. Your tests might not be 100% accurate but they are fun and reflect my edc results with the hand full of knives we have in common..
Oh ! they heat treated that one :D
The new Intrigue looks nice.
I noticed that last Steel Will model you tested was also available in D2
spider5001 So isn't this one. Actually this cutjack was out well before the modus and it was in d2 before m390. But ive heard that the factory in Italy that steel will has their m390 knives made at isn't the same factory that they have their d2 knives made.
I reckon the D2 ones are made in asia but the m390 ones are made by maserin
great result for cutjack m4 owners.
Great vid as always! It’s been driving me crazy, what are the 6 steel cans over your left shoulder for?
Thomas Macioce thats all one piece! Its a rainwater tank!
i was right about to comment: "you idiot. those are the knobs on his barbecue."
I have the regular lansky system. Is the diamond stone upgrade worth the money? And is there a better way of clamping the blade? Mine always end up moving around and eventually pulling out of the clamp.
Now that you’ve tested it, are you going to review it? Interested in what you think of the knife. Thanks a bunch Pete!
Jason Thames will definitely do
Can we do a patreon drive for a kme for Pete?
Put me down for $20
Forward me the link. I’m in!
kind of makes me want a lansky
Do you recommend 17° on this knife? Or even 15°?🤔
Tsprof. You will love it.
Pete, what do you think: I'm considering a Cutjack M390 vs a Manix 2. I've got a Modus D2 I'm really liking. I've also got a Lawman XHP. Where do you think the Cutjack and Manix 2 fit in this line up? I've got a Dividend in M390 and I'm loving the steel, so I'm leaning in that direction. I know there are so many Manixes (Manii?) that it's a tough question to answer.
Ruster Kat Just my opinion. I'd get a Manix. Not as much bang for your buck but it will add depth to your collection. Manix is a great model. I have the G10 s30v with their ball bearing lock. (But you could probably get the SteelWill in m390 for the same $)
I think I still like the manix as a general performer and user. But the cutjack is more fun to play with on the couch. I would say the lined g10 manix with any of the steels would be great as a proper tool knife if thats what you are after
Thanks Pete and Tony. You're right... it's past due time for a Spyderco for me.
I'm glad to see a better result from this knife. Hopefully that means the last one was just a fluke
Hey bud, is that the 3.5" version or the 3" version of the cutjack?
3.5
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors Have you handled the 3" version with the M390? If so, what do you think you would prefer to edc every day? 3" or 3.5"
Thanks for the test.
Statistically they still aren't doing great (based on your results) - you still have a 50% chance to get an expensive knife that will underperform.
Plus I'm concerned that this knife has such a low serial number (every company could make great first run, but the key is to stay consistent over time).
BTW (for full disclosure) - the guy that loaned you the knife - did he buy it or got it from Steel Will for a review?
I think it is important to know.
nah hes just a regular joe, not a reviewer or anything
I'm happy to reply. It's my knife. I bought two. One to use and one to keep. When I saw Pete's Modus video, they had just arrived but I'd not unpacked them yet. I offered the user to Pete before I touched it. This one is actually the higher of the serial numbers I have, but manufactured at the same time. I only placed my order on the 25 Jan 2018, so the low serial numbers are just what was pulled of the shelf from the seller. Pete has both of the certificates from Steelwill to compare SN/Manufacture dates to other models if he wants.
Cool, thanks for the clarification!
Can someone tell me why it took so long to sharpen the knife? Is it because he reshaped the blade? Or because he just wanted to make sure he was getting a super sharp edge?
I had to back the edge up to make the 17° i use for these tests, so a bit of a reprofile with more steel removal than a normal resharpening. Its a hard modern steel so it had a fair bit of resistance to the abraisive stone, plus I was taking my time.
Thanks for the response! I'm new here, so I'm still trying to learn haha.
Steel Will redeemed , now lets see what they do with the one you sent back .
Keep doing edge retention vids
How's that finger?
I am waiting on a pre order of the M390 Modus. I am curious to see what Steel Will has to say about your last results. Still not confident in the other knife.
sngx1304 I did the same testing he does with my Modus in m390 and got 417 cuts and could have gone further but I wasn't sure when he considered it not cutting paper reliably but after seeing this example I could have gone to 450 at least. So don't worry he just had a random bad one. I was nervous too that's why I tested mine
Paul Lonardo awesome because I really want to love this knife.
sngx1304 I hear ya! The modus is one of my favorite knives...when I thought they may all be bad I was feeling the same way. So I just had to test myself. And after doing it yourself you get a serious appreciation of what these knives can do and what the super steels can do. I also tested the zt 0909 because he had a junk one too, and I got 410. So I was very happy with that as well. And could have gone further again but didn't know when he would say it couldn't cut paper lol. And I did a spyderco Tenacious with Chinese 8cr13mov and got 125 cuts! All with v-edges too, if you follow his tests you would see that v-edge sharpened knives get wayyy more cuts than the convex edge. I have over 120 knives too so if you have another knife your wondering about odds are I have it and can test it! Lol. But I don't make videos just do it for fun so you would have to take my word for it. Plus I wouldn't want to compete with Cedric lol
sngx1304 Oh and one other thing....if you want a great work knife for cheap I tested a native 5 g10 look alike from this USA company Tacnwo . they had these knives modeled off the native and made in China and they have s35vn that they had sent their from here. I was skeptical so I tested it and got 368 cuts before it only just started to not cut paper perfectly so I say add another 20 cuts. Its only 39$! Just thought I would tell you cuz I sure as hell don't want to carry my 150$ knives at work. Its on amazon and search tacnwo s35vn knife and you should see it. Its actually built real well...and I hate clones myself but I actually talked to a rep there and they said how they liked the native and wanted to make an affordable one. Lol just wanted to share that
Your music is amazing
good deal I am curious to see the results from steal will I hope they give some feedback data - have a great 1
Do we know who makes the Cutjack?
It could be a completely different company than the Maserin produced Modus based on their response in your other video.
"We are kindly asking you to contact us to return the knife to us for the refund (shipping is on us). To avoid any further rumors, we'd like to state that all labels/tags on our knives are completely accurate. We do produce the knives labeled "made in Italy" in Italy at various manufactures of Maniago. In particular, Modus knife is produced by Maserin."
What about MANLY Patriot in D2 or CPM154 steel.Which one has better edge retention? Anyone please?! Thanks in advance.
Leaderilaos Chaqal cpm 154 is a better steel, stainless, and should hold an edge longer than d2
Thank you!
Leaderilaos Chaqal no problem my friend
steel will has been very good with their email responsiveness and parts ordering/issues with me. real steel has cockblocked me entirely, which is a little bit of a bummer since I own a shitload of them
So how long total did it take to sharpen this knife?
probably about an hour all up to do a full reprofile. To resharpen will probably be about half that, although I can probably maintain it with compound strops
Thanks. Now it would be interesting to compare to the same knife in D2, to see the difference in edge retention and sharpening effort. It appears that M390 is not really field sharpenable (where by field I mean backpacking, not traveling by RV with tools).
like the comment said below a huge number difference is not your human ERROR
the difference between decent professional custom knife maker and mass production
Which Pokémon came in your coffee mug
Stop fucking apologising, your test is fine
Very simply they sent you a inferior Blade with inferior heat treatment nowhere near the Rockwell hardness that should be
Very nice still not the value of the Kershaw M390 sprint run in my opinion. By the way anyone who bought a Link in m390 before I could buy a second I hate you.
Buying a cutjack in M390....
Ankerson
Steel will a good good treatment, m390 sospect in made in Italy...I don't no...
It's cactus.
I have the lansky,,,I hate it!!!
who cares the sw modus was just piggy backing on the cutjacks success, rushed out the door to sell ,
1st again.
Those sneaky bastards at steel will no consistent heat treat quality control whatsoever. You buy a 200 dollar knife and have to test it yourself to tell if you feel lucky. Well do you punk?
