Just, wow. Masterful writing, great acting, and a superb job of directing by Vic Morrow. Who is to say which human life is more important than another? Excellent show, incredible show the acting from stars,co stars and guest stars excellent been a fan since 1971 but the best part is that whether tv,films, music you grow with it and see so much differently like combat, wild wild west ,mannix, lost in space just about all the fun stuff is so dated yet it's the human element that you appreciate now and as time moves on you,ll continue to grow but that original magic will somehow still be there just like that kid who 1st fell in love with all of these great shows, films and music.
Absolutely true, although clearly you have to suspend belief just a little bit. Every week someone does something that would have earned him a Congressional Medal of Honor, and one of the stars sustains a wound that would have sent him stateside for the duration of the war. But the story lines are great, and the only way they could have done them differently would have been to have a new cast each week, which would have been a real pain. Besides, I got attached to Hanley, Saunders, Kirby, Cage and Little John as a kid! I looked forward to watching them each week, and I am binging through the entire series again right now! Best show ever, in my opinion!

I remember the show Combat! but not much more than that, I was born in 61. I do remember the tragic death of Vic Morrow. Now during Covid 2020. I have taken the time to start from the first episode. I do think this s2e17 stands out so far as the best story and single ep. I've seen. Then I see that it's Directed by Vic Morrow himself!
That may be... But what about inhumane feelings? At first thought, I would have left him there. on second thought, I would have dragged him by his heels. On third thought, I would have built a travois, out of two poles, and those sturdy German raincoats, lashing whatever one handed, THEN dragged him. You can drag him all day, you couldn't carry him for more than 1/4 mile. This, from a US Army Infantry sergeant, who had Sgt. Saunders' job for 5 years. This makes for good TV, though.
Don't normally like the all Rick Jason episodes, but this was an excellent one. With two excellent actors in Warren Oates and Albert Paulsen in co-starring roles. This is so much better than the utter PC garbage on TV today.
I love Combat! for the fact that unlike so many other WWII dramas, they used real German language. When I was in High School in the '60s, one of the reasons I studied the German language was so I could comprehend the speech in Combat.

1963. Morrow and Jason must have been good friend to share the spotlight, and so well, helping to make the other to achieve more, on a regular basis. Jason is undervalued by critics but he was an excellent actor and Morrow a directing talent. Shame they didn't do more after Combat. But it must have been a grueling five years. Perhaps Morrow's fatigue was not pure acting.

Of all the experiences of the human condition that exemplify what it means to be human, war is the most defining experience. Kill or be killed. Live...or let die. No other television show about war brought the bayonet closer before our eyes than Combat.
The fake cows in the beginning are pretty hilarious. Combat! is the best presentation of serious moral action (usually demonstrated by Saunders) in a TV series, in 50 years.
This episode: The Pillbox, is not to be confused with the epic 2-part 'Hills Are For Heroes' (season 4) in which the Germans defend from two bunkers. This is also the first episode directed by Vic Morrow.

Albert Paulson starred in the classic Missiles of October with William Devane 74. Argentina,s most famous actor spoke 5 langauges. He played the Soviet ambassador to Washington.
Good episode. They don't write stuff like this anymore for tv...but what do I know...I don't watch tv shows. Maybe they do and I don't know it. Hey, Jason pretty strong to pick up men and carry them like that.
I noticed that too! Warren Oates must’ve weighed heavier than Jason. This seems to be the only episode where a soldier was carried like that. That was Morrow’s idea and we have no idea now why. I can imagine during rehearsal (there must’ve been at least one) Jason’s face turning white trying to carry a grown man close to his own weight and maybe the giggles of the crew at the sideline. But in the actual episode Jason was able to carry the man easily. Was that a dummy doll you think? But that wasn’t important anymore. Morrow’s genius of conveying wordless but powerful messages - a Morrow trademark - struck through in the ending of this episode.
This episode illustrates why combat veterans didn't talk about their experiences. They saw men in terrible emotional and physical anguish, and despite best efforts, could not save them. They had awful choices to make, whether to kill prisoners in an effort to save themselves. War is random and violent. People sit in their easy chairs, quick to judge, and often not sympathetic. How to explain it all? Better not to try.
My father would not watch with me. He never kept me from watching it but he just wouldn't. I'd like to think he would have enjoyed it but I don't think he would have.
@@colleenmengel1337 Real war is visceral. No amount of training prepares you for actual battle. Some of the toughest men crack under fire. There's no glory in seeing body parts and hearing screaming and that's what real war is like. A lot of veterans don't see it as entertainment no matter how it's depicted. Incidentally the actor who played the English speaking German soldier was also in the very first episode of this series.
Incredible scene, episode and series one of the best ever best war and among the best drama series.however like wildwildwest, mannix, lost in space ,adam12,hawaii50 combat had quite a large female following because the show was beyond macho heroics but it was about people some women it never had many female characters, but everyone could relate especially males of all ages.the war took place and the series ran 1962 to 1967 when men werestill men and women were still women and for us guys how beautiful and special and yes strong women were and men were leading or in back was a real manly man bringing up the rear and for males women and men were the best of both worlds the wonder and uniqueness, and greatness of women and the simple magic of being a male and for us men born of women but must become a man.we men and only men are blessed were cherish the best of both worlds something women will never take from us because they can't not won't but can't understand and even if they do they can never ever enter the wonderful world and magic of womb and penis envy that will always belong to us one sex born of the other sex and both are sacred(female and male)to men.thats why women tune men out the male is very abstract, alien almost to the female men are the ones who commit by biology to the female and the male men have given up their lives for women, children old folks and other men we men worship and cherish both genders because the fetus starts out as female for 2 months(that's why you have so many male to female transgendar)but it's dad's y chromosome that makes us male and we get an x chromosome from mom females only have 2 x chromosome so we own our masculinity to dad but of course our very existence to mom, females can't say that about dad again the male is very abstract to the female almost invisible but for men were blessed with both womb and penis envy the female and male is very real to men very primal almost and very sacred and very worthy of worship and respect.
It's art, entertainment not about accuracy.did anybody ever really die then the whole series is fake it's about people especially at this time 1963.ww2 over only 17 years.
S2E17: The Pillbox. Very interesting. The script is well written but is meant for Lieutenant Hanley (Rick Jason) as the inner moral conflict would have been resolved in a blink of an eye if it were Sgt. Saunders in the same position. As it is, Vic Morrow is directing. Lieutenant Hanley usually does not hold up well in moral conflicts but in the last scene, he redeems himself by finally hearing the cries of Dorfman (Albert Paulsen) and shows some degree of humanity in taking him to some first aid station. Interesting to see Lt. Hanley show interest and compassion in the wounded soldier initially but any idea of being taken prisoner is out of the question. We have already seen Sgt. Saunders surrender the whole squad when the occasion requires it. Great to see Warren Oates here known in the Wild Bunch, In the Heat of the Night and towards the end in Stripes. Like Vic Morrow, he left us in 1982 at the age of 53. Albert Paulsen (Dorfman) despite his German accent came from Equador and played mostly on TV in various series and at least 3 times in Combat. Albert Paulsen left us in 2004 at almost 79 years of age. Merci pour le téléchargement.
Iain Schofield Albert Paulsen was one of the greatest actors American film ever had. He had an accent that could be portrayed as German or Spanish. Very versatile actor as good as Robert Duvall!! I'll never understand why he isn't as famous or as highly regarded. Rest in peace Mr. Paulsen.
+Yann Schonfeld Albert Paulsen was from Argentina. Spoke 4-5 languages. Appeared on Hawaii-5/0 many times. Once as a KGB agent. Once a Pimp murderer. Usually a nasty opponent for Steve McGarret.
I liked this ep a lot, even though it quickly took a turn I wasn't expecting. When the 3 Germans entered the pillbox and were unaware of the Americans in hiding, I expected Hanley to pop up and open fire. With his weapon ready, with total surprise, and at point-blank range he should have been able to take them all.

Man, isn’t that the truth.
Amen brother!
Wait wat?? Vic morrow(sgt sanders) was the director of this episode

Couldn't help but notice the German wearing boots like Saunders when Hanley carried him out of bunker.
His wore out and took them off a ded American soldier ?
Phoniest episode yet by far. He should have ambused them right after they entered the bunker, secured a rifle and left with his wounded soldier.
Iain Schofield trying to ruin it for everyone dick?
Iain Schofield Albert Paulsen was one of the greatest actors American film ever had. He had an accent that could be portrayed as German or Spanish. Very versatile actor as good as Robert Duvall!!
I'll never understand why he isn't as famous or as highly regarded. Rest in peace Mr. Paulsen.
Et merci pour l'information.
+Yann Schonfeld Albert Paulsen was from Argentina. Spoke 4-5 languages. Appeared on Hawaii-5/0 many times. Once as a KGB agent. Once a Pimp murderer. Usually a nasty opponent for Steve McGarret.
Yann Shofield, thank you for your clear, precise and accurate descriptions of so many of the episodes.
He DID take them all. He spared the captives.
Lt. Hanley is the man. He has that commanding voice to where he sounds like he should be ordering Colonels around.
Sgt. Hulka!!!! Are Newest, Bestist Big Toe!!!
