Note also that there is a difference between how heavy something "is" and how heavy it "feels." Like people will talk about the weight of medieval plate armor but those who wear it will say that it really doesn't feel AS heavy since its dispersed across the entire body and that while a modern day soldier carries only a little more weight than a set of plate armor, they're going to feel it a lot more since it's all in a backpack. The heavier suits of Decade and Blade have more weight spread across the entire body, on the torso, shoulders, forearms, thighs and calves while Kiva's suit is centralized on that top torso piece. That would exacerbate the other issues of its design and the direction of how Takaiwa would have to perform.
I never knew Kiva’s Emperor Form debuted so early into the show. Kinda reminds me of how in Gekiranger, they got their power-ups in Episode 21 of 49 while most other Sentai don’t even get them until WAY later 😭
it was verrrry very early in Kiva. I remember watching the series for the first time not knowing about it and knew something was off from the third episode after it debuted haha
I'm agreed with you. I think what makes Kiva suit feel heavy is not because the chain is a real chain, i'm sure it's not, but it's because of multiple factor, from the suit is quite top heavy, the unbalanced from the right leg, his unique running and rider kick stance, all of that makes Takaiwa Seiji feel Kiva suit is very heavy. At least we got one of the stylish rider suit from it
I feel the Direction is also a factor. Heaviness of the suit parts aside, he was no doubt directed to move and stand specific ways. Takaiwa still pulled it off like a champ, though things probably could’ve gone another way if the direction was different.
exactly yeah. Kiva as a character is defined by his look and posture, anything else wouldn’t feel right If anyone could stand up to it as long as he did, it would be Takaiwa
Makes sense why Kiva's final form was introduced so early and basically became Kiva's default form onwards for the rest of the series. For all cool as Kiva's base form is, the ergonomics are just horrible and there was no way Toei was going to film a whole season with that suit without changing something during production.
I was kinda shock to hear that Taikawa stated that the suit is heaviest considering that Blade looked the heaviest with it's huge shoulder pads and he did multiple curve ball flips to do a rider kick multiple time or even Kabuto's masked form seeing that it's huge.
someone acknowledged that too saying that how the weight is distributed on you greatly affects your perception of how heavy something is with the torso and leg compounding unevenly I think it makes more sense why he believed Kiva was the weightiest
On the subject of both Kiva and KAMEN RIDER GIRLS, I find it neat that the group covered "Break the Chain" on their Re:incarnation EP, even bringing violinist Yasuhito Kawabe back to perform on it. Comparing the two versions, Kawabe's violin work is much more pronounced throughout the KRGS version.
Kiva was the first series I ever watched and watched as debuted. I never realized Kiva got his final form so early till I started watching the older Heisei series. I did find it weird that base Kiva was completely fazed out afterwards. I think another small factor might of been cost cutting. All of Kiva’s Finishers outside of Emperor caused day to become night. Most of them they actually shot at night and that’s expensive to go back to the location at night just for like at max 2 minutes of footage for an episode.
The running style is the main factor. If you have worn a backpack filled with camping stuffs, you feel less weight if you stand upright. If you lean forward like Kiva, all that weight is focused on the back and pushing downwards.
You seem pretty knowledgeable about Tokusatsu stuffs, can you make a video about Gaoranger/Wild Force robot cockpit? The default cockpit was built and used for couple of episodes and then completely replaced with the Soul Bird later on. Changing the default cockpit has never been a thing in Sentai before nor after Gaoranger. I found 2 answers running around in the fandom. 1. The suit actors need a place to sit during long filming. 2. The original cockpit was somehow damaged. I couldn't find any solid evidence for both answers so I hope you can look into it for a video.
Finally glad to see an actual video debunking this mis conception. Now, more people need to know that Amazon wasn't cancelled because of its high violence
@kenseigerj2659 Basically, Amazon was never cancelled but they purposely set the episodes to that low of an amount. It is somewhat complicated to explain why (Amazon's JP Wikipedia page explains in more detail) but in a nutshell, they were switching TV stations so it would be easier for Amazon to have less episodes than usual.
@@miragebangbravern I see, I'll have to check that Wikipedia page out, thanks for the response, but had be at least partially the reason right? Since every post-series appearance of Amazon in the showa era has him fighting less violently than in his own series.
@@kenseigerj2659Nope, Amazon with 24 episodes was intentional since the franchise was changed from NET (named before changing name to TV Asahi) to Tokyo Broadcasting System
@@kenseigerj2659 Perhaps but it was more so that Amazon had an odd storyline and the titular lead rider being lonely that they had to change things around the sixth episode which carried over to his future appearances
As a quick note, whilst Emperor form definitely is the final form, they still manage something approaching the Classic Standard - Mid- Final form progression by introducing the Zanvat Sword around the point you'd usually introduce a final form. It's a real shame the standard suit is such a problem. Baseline Kiva is so cool. Honestly I kinda think it's cooler than Emperor form.
Thanks for doing this! I always thought the chains rumour sounded a bit unlikely but didn't want to disagree without any evidence. Really useful sorting through what we actually know, since people often talk about it as if there's some interview where Takaiwa says his neck was almost broken or something. (As a sidenote, I'd be careful using AI images for stock illustrations--that one at 5:03 has some seriously weird anatomy going on with the back leg. There's probably genuine medical illustrations out there that can communicate similar.)
Now we gotta ask the real hard question about kiva why did he act almost completely differently when suit up vs civilian mode even all the promotional material shows him as a completely diffrent character (We can probably make a whole series of just kiva questions 🗿)
This is the arguably the same thing you could ask about Agito and probably other Riders as well. Takaiwa does wonders reflecting character personalities, but when you have a character seen usually pretty outwardly weak, but still meant to win the fight normally, I’d imagine the direction he’s given is why he ends up coming off more hard and strong it’s definitely weird with Kiva for sure The only time I remember really seeing Wataru’s personality actually come out when in Kiva form was when he was afraid of IXA initially lol
Honestly with Agito I can see it. The contrast with Shouichi's regular self and his mystic warrior bearing as Agito was part of the point, I felt. Ryuko as well, Shinji's dorkiness came out extremely well.
Honestly, that is a fair question but it's most likely that Wataru sees his duty as a kamen rider as a serious business. I also believe because it brings out his fangire nature out a but makes him acting like a creature a bit. It's also the reason why he acts differently when he taps into other forms like Garulu, Basha and Dogga. It changes his nature a bit. Regardless there are moments where wataru gets flustered while still being Kiva, you'll see Taikawa Seji mimicking the shyness of Koji Seto (Wataru's civilian actor.) You see it in moments when he sees his crush in the show or gets embarrassed. You also get to see Wataru be intimidating outside of the suit when he wants to become the king of fangires. I think the story is telling us that Wataru acts intentionally different. Even Gavv acts differently around Valen when concealing his identity.
I actually just finished watching the kiva series and I'm quite surprised how i like the series and collect most of skc kiva line but for me the best suit in the series gotta be kamen rider saga not just only the design looks cool but it reflects the looks for the new king fangire
I tend to wear heavy boots all the time and they do tend to hurt after a few hours so during some days where I have to do more walking and work it can get really bad. However the boots I wear have stainless steel toes and screws bolted into the soles of the boot, as well other things that contribute to the heaviness. If I only wore one and wore something else on the other foot, I’d definitely have uneven pain (worse) and just feel off.
I heard the problem was, it was the most top heavy If you look at it the only real bulky armor is the chest and the next series has a suit which is really armored for no reason
This entire situation unfortunately is nothing but “I heard” “this person said” this video compiles everything that people “have heard”, along with the factual bits of information that we do know
Not exactly no. Ex-Aid Lvl 1 forms were a gimmick. Kabuto’s Armored forms were as well to an extent, they served a specific purpose. Here, they designed a suit to as normal but it turned out later to be an issue, and they needed to switch up.

MAN. Did it kill them after THREE uses like Otoya?
Kiva is one of my favorite series next to the original Kamen Rider , decade
The real chain thing has been disproven for a while now, just not around the english fandom, from what I'm aware. Because using real chains is insane
When the original suit really sucks and the emperor form is comfortable, it makes sense to use that more frequent
