In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

Donny Osmond was perfect casting not only because of incredible talent and looks but because in some ways his own life mirrors that of Joseph.

** Just want to correct what he said about Joseph taking out his anger on Benjamin. To give a bit of context, Jacob (Joseph's father) had 2 wives, and 2 concubines (idk what to call them - they were the handmaids of his 2 wives but they bore him 4 sons collectively - it's very strange go read up the passage from the bible if you're interested in the whole story). The first wife bore 6 sons, but the second wife (whom Jacob favored) bore Joseph and Benjamin, meaning Joseph and Benjamin were blood brothers (Jacob favored Joseph and Benjamin over the other 10, so they were both subject to jealousy). So, when the brothers came to Joseph in Egypt, Joseph did that not to take his anger out on his brothers/family but to test the character of his 10 other brothers. Joseph wanted to know if they had changed their jealous/toxic characters in the time he was gone, so he targeted Benjamin to see if they would protect or push him into danger (like how they pushed Joseph into danger back then). Surprisingly, they had completely changed and even offered themselves to be taken in place of Benjamin - so Joseph was very touched and revealed to them who he really was, and forgave them (they all felt very guilty of what they did in the past).

To be fair, I think he explained it the way he did because he was strictly talking about the story of the musical, where Benjamin's history and relationship to his brothers and father is never explicitly mentioned and only occasionally referenced depending on how the actors choose to play certain moments. It's not even that uncommon for audiences to think that Joseph's meant to be the youngest of the 12. In the musical, Benjamin is present from the beginning (in the Bible he was either born after Joseph was taken to Egypt or he was a very young boy when Joseph was taken away and not involved with it at all, I can't quite remember which), he hates Joseph as much as the others do and (often very happily - again, depending on the actor) goes along with the plan to get rid of him. If you only watch the show, it's very easy to see Joseph framing Benjamin as him taking out his anger and punishing his brothers as well as being a test of character.

I am pleased that you commented on that, I am really impressed. I am glad you brought up the touch of what he was really trying to do, but a part of it takes it out on Benjamin because he is sort of "acting" a scene, but you're right, he was testing them to see if their behavior has changed and they did, and I believe that the brothers did regret their actions. I also notice that you like the show just as much as I do, and it is a really powerful story. Thank you for the great comment.

@@samirsedky3324 Yeah, he likely was trying to explain it in the context of the musical. I just wanted to shed some light on the origin story in case others were interested :) Thank you, I do love musicals - especially ones by ALW.
