1a. The Ethereal Mirror 1b. The Carnival Bizarre Those two are absolute masterpieces and I can’t decide which I like better. 2. Forest of Equilibrium 3. Supernatural Birth Machine I lost track of Cathedral after that but those two albums are amongst my all time favorites by anybody.
Iommi played on Utopian Blaster, which also includes the little nod to Sabbath in the lyrics "Who's your Master Now?". Met them twice, once in London at the garage playing with Orange Goblin and then later in Brisbane opening for Paradise Lost. Great down to earth English gentlemen who don't mind a game of pool, a refreshing ale and a herbal cigarette on a warm Summer's evening in the Valley (Fortitude). Forest is my favourite with Ethereal Mirror and Carnival Bizarre equal second. Soul Sacrifice and In Memorium EPs are fantastic and Endtyme is very underrated. What a great band.
You probably dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream all of the new series on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last weeks =)
Thanks Pete for ranking Cathedral. They are one of my favorite doom/stoner bands, so I'm glad to see you feature them. So many good albums, but here are my top 3: 1 - The Carnival Bizarre 2 - The Ethereal Mirror 3 - The VIIth Coming
Cathedral is a fantastic band, and like you said, they never released a sub-par album. Yes, their style changed somewhat from time to time, yet they always kept up the quality. My rankings: 1 Forest of Equilibrium 2 Last Spire 3 Endtyme 4 Carnival Bizarre 5 Ethereal Mirror 6 Garden of Unearthly Delights 7 VIIth Coming 8 Caravan Beyond Redemption 9 Supernatural Birth Machine 10 Guessing Game Glad you mentioned Dave Patchett’s artwork. He is an amazing talent.
Lee has never been a fan of Supernatural Birth Machine. The record label forced them into the studio within a year of their previous album. Lee said he was still writing the lyrics right up to going in and recording his vocals. He said they'd never do that again. I think there's great tracks on there, but it's their weakest album
Yes Pete!! We have the same pick as favorite album!! 1. The Ethereal Mirror 2. The Forest of Equilibrium 3. Supernatural Birthmachine 4. The Carnival Bizzare 5. Caravan Beyond Redemption
I'll always remember the first time I heard Hopkins (The witchfinder general), it absolutely blew my mind! They are one of the bands that got me into doom metal!! Great video!!
Soul sacrifice by far was my favorite. . I found it at a dollar store when I was way younger. It was different compared too what I was listening too at that time. But blew me away.
1. Forest Of Equlibrium 2. The Ethereal Mirror 3. Endtyme 4. The Guessing Game Honorable mention: Soul Sacrifice (EP) I don't care for any of their other albums all too much, but those are absolute classics.
My dive into the Cathedral catalogue, a few years back, lead me to a 70's prog band by the same name, with an album called Stained Glass Stories. It was lumped in with this Cathedral on spotify. I highly recommend you check that album out, if you don't know it.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Pete, Dave Patchett did do album artwork for Endtyme. I have it. It's a Japanese Import. Cost me a little bit more, but worth it. It also has a bonus track. (Gargoylian)
One of my all time favorite bands. I'm including 3 of their Ep:s aswell beeing 30 to 40 minutes long. 1. Supernatural Birth Machine 2. Carnival Bizarre 3. Statik Majik 4. Caravan Beyond Redemption 5. Soul Sacrifice 6. The Garden of Unearthly Delights 7. The Guessing Game 8. The Ethereal Mirror 9. Endtyme 10. The VIIth Coming 11. Hopkins (The Witchfinder General) 12. Forest Of Equilibrium 13. The Last Spire
1. Forest of Equilibrium 2. The Garden of Unearthly Delights 3. The Ethereal Mirror 4. The Carnival Bizarre 5. Endtyme 6. The Guessing Game 7. The Last Spire 8. Caravan Beyond Redemption 9. The VIIth Coming 10. Supernatural Birth Machine
Of the five I own / my favorite is 1993. ETHEREAL MIRROR/ just my opinion / but I’m for clean vocals/ obviously everyone hears things differently. In addition/ some tremendous album covers.
The story behind Endtyme is that after Caravan Beyond Redemption Lee got drunk on the plane during the tour and said if they didn't bring the heaviness back that he was quitting the band...the result of that drunken threat was Endtyme. If you haven't gotten the Hopkins Ep, it's worth it for Cathedral's cover of Author Brown's Fire alone. The Static Magic/Cosmic Funeral Ep is one of the best Eps ever made.
I always do albums ranking for all the bands I love, but, I still didn't do one for Cathedral, 'cos it's hard, even being a fan for more than 20 years. The transitional point between the In Memorium and Forest Of Equilibrium era is the fantastic ep Soul Sacrifice, which I'll certainly put in my ranking; then, between The Ethereal Mirror and The Carnival Bizarre, they made Statik Majik which contains the very first song I ever heard from the band, which is Cosmic Funeral and the totally tripped out prog monster The Voyage Of The Homeless Sapien, which contains one of the heaviest and mosntrous riffs of all times, which Earache Records used as the intro to their video releases. Unique as is The Garden! Their albums and EP's have lots of great bonus tracks for the japanese editions. Just for curiosity: master Tony Iommi plays the solos on Utopian Blaster and Dave Patchett made the painting parts for Iron Maiden's Dance Of Death artwork. This a band that has a special place in my musical world. VIVA CATHEDRAL!!! \m/
This was tough. Not really a bad album in the bunch. My lowest ranked one is still worth owning. 10) The VIIth Coming 9) Supernatural Birth Machine 8) Caravan Beyond Redemption 7) Endtyme 6) The Guessing Game 5) The Last Spire 4) Forest of Equilibrium 3) The Carnival Bizarre 2) The Garden of Unearthly Delights 1) The Ethereal Mirror Thanks, Pete! Edit: FYI, the artwork for Endtyme was by Stephen O'Malley from Sunn O))).
1) The Carnival Bizarre 2) Forest of Equilibrium 3) The Ethereal Mirror 4) Caravan Beyond Redemption 5) Supernatural Birth Machine 6) The Garden of Unearthly Delights 7) The Last Spire 8) Endtyme 9) The VIIth Coming 10) The Guessing Game
What a pleasant surprise. Cathedral never made a bad album. They sound like a relative of the Sabbath family tree. The artwork often expands to multiple panels of unearthly delight. Lee Dorians vocals and Gary Jennings Iommi fueled riffs propel this band IMO to legends of doom. Carnival Bizarre from top to bottom is my pick for best album.
I agreed with everything you said. I struggle with "Forest..." I like it but I have to be in the mood for it and Wouldn't recommend it as an album to start with. It stands on its own. Cathedral came into their own on Ethereal Mirror. Endtyme is the under rated one for me.
I got into Cathedral after hearing them on Metal Shop! 1991 I bought Forest of Equilibrium and Soul Sacrifice ep. Forest of Equilibrium Ethereal Mirror Static Magick Carnival Bizaare Witchfinder General ep Guessing Game Caravan Beyond Redemption
And IMO The Garden of Unearthly Delights and Endtyme are pretty underrated, they are not the best part of discography, but definetely worth your attention - they sound more like a Soul Sacrifice track and the sound itself is very massive and dirty.
Ethereal Mirror is also my fav. Its so damn heavy, but groovy and hooky. Major props for mentioning the Andy Sneap production on Caravan too. I wish they had kept going with the high energy sound on that record but I like the newer stuff anyway
Enjoy your channel very much. I to am a 60's child so we both have a lot of the same taste in music. I'm curious though why you haven't reviewed the band Phish. I to was a naysayer in the late 90's until a coworker turned me on to them and wow, talk about talent. They are a bit bizarre. Just wondering if you could share. Thanks!
The Carnival Bizarre is one of the best post-80s metal albums, period. By far my favorite of theirs. They need to reform, LD and GJ are not doing anything worthwhile now.
I really liked Cathedral. My favorite by far was The Ethereal Mirror. Saw the video for the song Ride on Headbanger’s Ball and bought the album soon after. To me, that is their best album by a long way, I appreciate the slower stuff too. As you said, not one bad album in the bunch
If you haven't had the chance pick up Gaz Jenning's one off project called Death Penalty(named after the Witchfinder General album, which Gaz loves). They did one album in 2014, and a 7 inch vinyl, but it's a classic. I still listen to it and it doesn't get tiring.
I still have gaz jennings orange tortex pic, that he dropped onstage at the tivoli in dublin years ago, the bouncer got up on the stage and got it for me after the show , it was like the pic of destiny , my playing improved imeasureably after that lol ,long lost band hangnail opened for them . hangnail where seriously underrated ,it was a gr8 night - also seen them with local heroes mourning beloveth opening years earlier , two great nights , carnival bizarre no1 - ethereal mirror no2 - caravan beyond redemption no 3 - the garden of unearthly delights no4 - forest of equilibrium no 5 - endthyme no6 - the guessing game no7 - the last spire no 8 - supernatural birth machine no9, which i got for 10 euros on discogs, incluing shipping , total steal hard to find at a good price ! - static majik ep no 10 - got the farewell live album recently too its gr8 - lucky enuf to visit coventry cathedral years ago where their from, i assume they are named after that - but lee not being religious in any way , maybe its an ironic statement!!!! ,he , like myself ,being of irish parentage but born in the uk as far as i know ,he said he hated organised religion.
Cathedral- favorite to least favorite is: The Ethereal Mirror Forest Of Equilibrium The Garden Of Unearthly Delights Cosmic Requiem/Statik Majik The VIIth Coming The Guessing Game The Last Spire Endtyme Caravan Beyond Redemption The Carnival Bizarre Supernatural Birth Machine I added 2 EP's ( Cosmic Requiem/Statik Majik) because they're good, and they are both over 40 minutes)
Forest of Equilibrium stands out from all the next albums, it's really as weird and surrealistic as the album cover. I'm not a huge doom metal listener because of that introspection and self-pity, but Cathedral's doom is very theatrical and exaggerated, and you don't have to be depressed to tune in to the vibe of the album.
Their first few albums are top tier doom. I'm less familiar with the later material. I love their first album, but I think The Ethereal Mirror is probably their best.
heres my list but like you said ,there isnt a bad cathedral album ..1.endtime,2.the carnival bizarre,3.the last spire 4.the ethereal mirror 5.supernatural birth machine 6.forrest of equilibrium 7.the 7th coming 8. caravan beyond redemption 9.the guessing game and special mention to the eps statik magik and soul sacrifice!!
The Ethereal Mirror Caravan Beyond Redemption Soul Sacrifice/Statik Majik The Carnival Bizarre/Hopkins (The Witchfinder General) Supernatural Birth Machine Endtyme In Memorium/Forest Of Equilibrium The Garden Of Unearthly Delights The VIIth Coming The Guessing Game/A New Ice Age The Last Spire
The Soul Sacrifice EP is a classic!
I would highly agree with you. Some of their best material.
That was my introduction to Cathedral
ahhh yeah so do good
Masterpiece
1a. The Ethereal Mirror
1b. The Carnival Bizarre
Those two are absolute masterpieces and I can’t decide which I like better.
2. Forest of Equilibrium
3. Supernatural Birth Machine
I lost track of Cathedral after that but those two albums are amongst my all time favorites by anybody.
Omg, I never expected of you revisiting Cathedral. Awesome band.
Amazing, cathedral is definitely one of my all time favorite bands so thanks for showing them love!!
Iommi played on Utopian Blaster, which also includes the little nod to Sabbath in the lyrics "Who's your Master Now?". Nothing has sounded like Forest Of Equilibrium again.
You probably dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream all of the new series on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last weeks =)
@Chaim Wilder Yea, I have been watching on InstaFlixxer for years myself :)
Thanks Pete for ranking Cathedral. They are one of my favorite doom/stoner bands, so I'm glad to see you feature them. So many good albums, but here are my top 3:

3 - The VIIth Coming
FANTASTIC BAND! My first concert was: Brutal Truth, CATHEDRAL, Carcass, Napalm Death, 1991.👍

I love the Statick Magic e.p.
Saw them live in the early 90s a couple times. Great band
Thank you for your ranking of Cathedral. 🎤🎸🎵🥁
I'll always remember the first time I heard Hopkins (The witchfinder general), it absolutely blew my mind! They are one of the bands that got me into doom metal!! Great video!!

3. Endtyme
4. The Guessing Game
Honorable mention: Soul Sacrifice (EP)
I don't care for any of their other albums all too much, but those are absolute classics.
I love the more upbeat Cathedral. The Carnival Bizarre is my favorite
They’re doom metal.
One of the heaviest bands ever. Incredible grooves and vocals. Dorian seems to have about 7 or 8 different voices he's used on various songs.
The groovy doom and funk mix on The Etherial Mirror is awesome.
So crazy when saw Dorrian in a very different groove and showing his real voice, Ethereal my favorite.
Great band, shocked by the them thanks to HBB.
My dive into the Cathedral catalogue, a few years back, lead me to a 70's prog band by the same name, with an album called Stained Glass Stories. It was lumped in with this Cathedral on spotify. I highly recommend you check that album out, if you don't know it.
Yep, have had that for over 20 years. GREAT US prog album.

Thanks for the tip. Just found it on Spotify. I'm not a doom fan but always searching for unexplored prog!
Great ranking Pete. Agree with the top 4 but difficult to rank. Great news about the Spiritual Beggars show. Underrated band
Yes! Mr. Jennings is from my home town
Oh man i love cathedral So much! One of My all Time favourite bands!
The ethernal mirror and forest of equilbrem are my favs
The ethereal mirror, carnival bizarre and forest of equilibrium my top 3.
It happened i prefered the "Statik Majik" EP that i used to listened even more than their album. Such a weird and cosmic experience!

Yes somebody remembered that Tony Iommi was on a Cathedral album.
Glad you're getting to City Boy. The Day the Earth Caught Fire is brilliant.
'Ethereal Mirror' for me, I would put Violet Vortex/Ride up against any album opener.
This was tough. Not really a bad album in the bunch. My lowest ranked one is still worth owning.

Forest of Equilibrium
Ethereal Mirror
Static Magick
Carnival Bizaare
Witchfinder General ep
Guessing Game
Caravan Beyond Redemption
Cathedral along with Black Sabbath, iron Maiden Judas Priest and Celtic Frost the best heavy metals ever
And IMO The Garden of Unearthly Delights and Endtyme are pretty underrated, they are not the best part of discography, but definetely worth your attention - they sound more like a Soul Sacrifice track and the sound itself is very massive and dirty.

Somehow I'm woefully uneducated on this band. Being a Sabbath nut, I'm thinking I've got some catching up to do.
I believe Utopian Blaster features Tony Iommi
Super Fuckin Natural Birth Machine
Carnival Bizzare

Super Natural Birthing Machine
A City Boy's video? Nice!! I also wonder if Pete likes Charlie.

The Carnival Bizarre/Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)
Supernatural Birth Machine
Endtyme
In Memorium/Forest Of Equilibrium
The Garden Of Unearthly Delights
The VIIth Coming
The Guessing Game/A New Ice Age
The Last Spire
It's hard to beat the likes of All Them Witches.. King Buffalo, or The Marlboro Men
I tried with Cathedral. Listened to Carnival Bizarre. Couldn’t get into it. Much prefer Candlemass and St Vitus but hey, you can’t like em all!
Superbirth machine is the worst by far
I gave it a second chance since the cd 💿 was stored since the 90s , by yes y was hooked , i think it the 5th best ,
