America needs more damn good mechanics like you, man!
Kenneth Hudson Amen!!!!!!
I wish all mechanics cared about doing a quality job, and took care of their customers like you.
The auto repair industry has a bad reputation for a reason. You are the exception.
Thank you Eric
You and your wife are the coolest people I have seen. So great you guys have such a great relationship.
behind every good man is a GREAT WOMAN!!!
Love it when Mrs O gives you grief !
For most guys, they will never see a mechanic do this stuff let alone explain it ! So this is real VALUE to regular guys when they have work to be done. To be able to tell the mechanic what you think is wrong and where puts you MUCH higher in their esteem that an ignorant customer ! I hired an experienced 'mobile mechanic' to install 4 struts in my 1999 Corolla (after 20 years!) and watched him do it. Money well-spent and that is a hateful and hard job to do!
I like it when Vanessa gives you a hard time. It's funny. Nice little extra for the customer with the spare tire.
Love to watch the interaction between Mr and Mrs O
Totally agree, I cant tell who is more funny, love the random interruptions and appearences and shot firing comments
Mr. O, hello from Georgia! I am not a mechanic by any means. However, I am a pretty handy DIYer. Watching your videos has given me the knowledge and confidence to change my own shocks and struts saving me hundreds of dollars! Just wanted to say thank you very much! Your videos are excellent learning tools. I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into them!
Never want to skip ahead on SMA vids or you'll miss gems like "herpes of the automotive world".
Nice job. My favorite part was when Mrs.O got annoyed. Thanks for the vid.
Your relationship is so wholesome. I genuinely love this channel
I am having a good time watching you and your family in your shop.
I am 70 years young and always learn more at your ways,of approach to tackle a job.
Keep up the good work.
Michael
Your attention to detail is what keeps your customers coming back. Well done great video!!
Always a pleasure having Mrs. O make an appearance !!!
It always makes me feel good when I see Eric O. Go the extra mile and fill the spare and reorganizate the trunk. Few people realize that your spare will lose 1 psi a month naturally. So if the spare has not been checked for 3 to 4 years, its basically worthless when you need it. In the video it was 8 psi so my point was made. Great seeing Sheba and Chloe too. Beautiful dogs.
Thanks Kenneth! Oh and thanks for the taffy! Much appreciated :D
South Main Auto Repair Youre welcome. I know its not something g kewl like power tools but I was thinking about enjoyment for the whole family. Hope your day was really great!

Eric's reply: "The WHOLE family❓"
I drive trucks for a living, and I stopped to help a lady in the Dallas Texas area that was sitting on the side of the road. Her spare was flat too. She said, another gentleman stopped but realized the spare was flat. I said, ma'am no problem. I carry an air hose with me and I hooked it up aired up her spare, changed them for her. She wanted to give me $100 !
I said, no ma'am. I'm just glad I could help. Besides, God gave me an opportunity to help. So I did. She was around 70 years old, she did give me a hug. (That was better than any money )
I just put a set of those pre-made strut/spring units on my wife's car. Easy peasy and cheap. My mechanic friends said he prefers them to me asking him to swap springs at his garage on his fancy low death rate spring machine.
The customer will think the new struts fixed the rattle in the back, when it was the loose jack parts all along.
i was thinking the same thing lol...
Roscoe Someone else v I
More true than most folks realise working at a local garage as a kid I had lots of rattling shocks and yes I did check all the trunk junk too 9 of 10 time it was the trunk junk that was rattling
Pretty dang cool. Here I am thousands of miles away on a business trip overseas and still get to watch Eric O videos at 3 am.
Total cure for jet lag and time changes! Thanks Eric. Very much appreciate all you put into making these great videos. I am a decent car, boat, and landsacape mechanic, (no where near your experience), but watch every video just for the sheer enjoyment. Still learn something every session. You should be teaching full time someplace probably like NASA.
As one NY'er to another, awesome....
Mike B
It’s nice to see a really good old school mechanic. I worked in my uncles shop as a kid. I learned a few things watching and eventually working with the mechanics. Anyway, it’s good to see a mechanic who cares about doing the job right. And, Mr. O is a good example of a good example. Keep up the good work. And thank you for putting out good work and quality videos. Have a great day and stay safe...
Nicely done, the placement of the jack and components was a nice touch. I'm sure it all rattled around in there like crazy the way it was. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the "Free the nut up for the guy doing the alignment" Its very much appreciated.
It's amazing the extra effort and attention to detail you put in Dr. O. There are some unscrupulous shops out there that might chuckle at the mess in the spare tire compartment and maybe even contribute an empty cigarette box depending on the techs mood.
I just wanted to say your videos are easy to follow and understand, some I've watched by others are very confusing. I appreciate the work you put in
Another good little tidbit is to take some grease and smear it on the threads on that rod that holds the spare. I had a co-worker once that had that rod and the screw down rust together and we had a hell of a time trying to get the spare out because neither of us had any tools.
I like to blast them with white lithium spray grease :0
Nice Mix
Mechanics, Food, Family & Dogs.
Buy Mrs. O some Night Vision Goggles for her dark kitchen.
Safety First.
Eric you sir are a great business man. Going the extra mile for your customers. Even if you did happen to put bad air in the tire at least you put it there. LOL. Thanks for sharing.
Two Ughadugas equals only 3 foot pounds or 24 inch pounds but a surprisingly limited amount of the beans. Nice video once again Mr O.
Actually, your videos are great! It’s great to see someone with great moral values do the work you do and it be a family affair as well. It’s really awesome that you have such great support staff in your business.
Thanks for taking us along Eric, love the nuts and bolts suspension videos. It seems like they take care of their vehicle fairly well.
I got the classic "reach under" at the doctors office not long ago.
Was odd. It was the dentist. 😣
Lol!
Sounds like a Rodney Dangerfield line !!
YES, a threefer on the brake clean. Well done, sir.
It's always good to see the "Lovely Mrs. O"
Old classic SMA, with the IR impact and the pimp juice sprayer 👍
I have a problematic Mazda Tribute, and your videos have saved my bacon numerous times.
You know, I’m 77, your young, you are a special person ,who is very blessed, I think you know it, a beautiful family , great wife, a wonderful busniss in a little town setting, all the business
You won’t ,and on top of that the greatest teacher I ever had, going to collage can’t compare to OJT. for you yuppies, that on the job training,,I PERSONALLY THANK YOU SO MUCH. JIMMY Cucuro, Macomb Michigan.
Very Nice💥 I'm gonna do my wifes "front" struts on her 2010 Escape -- they came in the mail" yesterday -- looks like it's gonna be a breeze ! 🛠 thanks very" much, for sharing your Skills, and valuable experience with all of us who "Really" appreciate it !!
Sorry for that last comment. Helps when one watches the entire video before casting stones. I would never have made you out to have been a thief based off of all your work I have watched here at South Main Auto Repair. Keep up the great work and videos.
Eric, do most of your customers know that you have one of the most popular mechanic channels on the ole you tube. I'm surprised you don't have a camera recording while you work on all your customers cars all the time lol... Just shows how honest and what a damn great mechanic you are. Keep up the great 👍 videos and thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us. Have a great and safe weekend sir..
To Eric O, this video was as you might say a little bit routine but, you make it entertaining, the surprise visit by the missus added to the fun. I'm watching all the way through. Even routine there are moments to learn something. Like your measurements for doing the tie rod end. I had thought if I ever did one of those I would put a mark on the rod that the tie rod goes on to. This makes more sense. So even routine has an opportunity to learn and teach. Another great video
Back in the day when I worked at a shop, we used to used those refillable spray cans for brake clean. We would have brake clean by the drum with a pump. Certainly made it easy. Keep up the great work!
as much as he uses, he should get 55 gallon drums and have it on a hose ;)
Best Mechanic on RUclips Hands Down
why thumbs down this is a very good video he covered all the bases on the job some ppl just like being negative nice job Eric O
I still say, you live a charmed life. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
Hey Eric. I'm retired and just beginning to learn auto mechanics the hard way: I got took on a 2011 Tribute that I paid 4K for. I'm now in the process of doing 4K in repairs on it, though I understand I'll never get my money out of the beast. I wish I could say it's been fun. Currently replacing the front struts using your video.. I've already done the front brakes using your video. Thanks so much for the great videos. IMHO your videos are the most useful.
Mrs. O cracks me up.
Nice to fill the spare, tell the client, he will remeber you when he get a flat.
And as always a good exp. will be told to 5 friends a bad one to 15.
My son is an environmental chemist so I use Simple Green. Believe me, I have had some lectures before.
FINALLY! I got my brake clean fix. The methadone clinic couldn't help me with my brake clean withdraws & Obamacare doesn't cover it.
Today I learned that for precision, the air impact factory torque setting for installation of the strut tower nuts is exactly the same setting for removal. Brrrrt!
Couple of things...brake cleaner works on crickets and drunk binge lasts from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. It's ok to go to church just keep quiet.
Don't know if you read the comments, but thank you for making the videos.
my mom said why cant you be more like eric o! said sorry now im ashamed....
I kept screaming, the oil! Don't forget to put his oil back
Thanks Eric good to have regular sma videos in the morning
YES! The great brake clean outage has ended!!!!
I thought some BS EPA thing happened and he couldn't use it anymore. Good to see you douche it all down again.
So happy to see brake clean again!! My OCD missed it!! 😂
Eric, great video. Always enjoy the mechanical hands on stuff!
“Hannah never threw tools at me... she probably wanted to”
Hahahaha
One thing about Escapes and Mariners as a long time owner of both, if you ever hear the squawky noise from in back while the body flex's as you drive, it's the rear hatch door latch every time, after looking everywhere else FIRST! LOL!
These are good cars, there are 4 of them in my immediate family.
Can you do a video on your State Inspections?
Would be interesting to see what is involved and compared to UK MOT
Thanks
agreed....I am also in UK and MOT strikes fear into the soul of every 5+year old car owner (never owned a car newer!)
As a Brit, I would love to see this too. I own mostly older cars but I don't worry about MOT. It's easy to pass if the car is well maintained.
Would be interested in this too! I'm in Ireland and we have the NCT. I never worry too much as my cars are well maintained and never have a problem passing.
I bet UK is way more involved than NY...NY sucks but its not horrible...but it would be a good video
Good question Steven.. Yes please Eric
Now that was nice watching an SMA video seeing my shirt and I'm watching it wearing my SMA shirt. My brother was watching it with me and laughed. I brought my SMA t-shirt to NY with me hoping to visit but now the funeral for my aunt was earlier & my uncle's is Friday afternoon and family get together is Saturday and I leave Sunday. I am renting a cabin next year near Great Sacandaga for a week or two so I'll swing by then. Great video as usual with a nice twist!!
Haha I thought you may have saw that shirt I was wearing with NO DAMN POCKET! Lol any how sorry to hear about your family :'( . I am sure we will meet up some time. Take care.
My new ones will have pockets & I'll send you one. When you said a shirt without pockets is a rag I figured it was long gone.
straight forward stuff but always a gas to watch. And a big Hello to Capt. Brakeclean...lol. Thanks again Mr. O...
P.S. I now find myself actually counting "Uga-Duga's" So there's that...
The easiest way I found to measure distance + length in tie rod is to measure from end of boot ( I put the tape measure right up against the boot and touching the tie rod) to grease fitting if no grease fitting present find the center of the top of tie rod end then put a dot with a sharpie. I do this because I have found variances in length of tie rod end bodies from brand to brand so counting threads may put you way off
Random One the center of the ball in the joint is the axis so it's the best true measurement. I've scene some measure from the end of the boot to the end of the tie rod end ....but again the body of the different brands may vary but the grease fitting or the center where it would go is constant
I wish that brake fluid cleaner would have a adjustable spray pattern. Its used for so many different things, rarely cleaning brakes.
Looks like normal junk in that trunk. I've heard all sorts of interesting finds in trunks from guns, underware, kids toys, adult toys, dead animals.
Mrs. O - "I thought you said this job would only take you 20 mi..." and cut the video 😁
Nice work as usual Eric. Love the compilation of bolts - had that on a Taurus once.
I remember this overheated gem. Time for some cereal and SMA.
Eric, Mrs.O needs a light to cook those awesome meals for you!! love the video!!!
It's not every man- who is comfortable enough to ask his Wife to hold a *big black shock* for him. It's very nice to see more and more RUclips Mechanics using that penetrating fluid recipe; it's cheap, economical, and effective. I've been using it for nearly 40 years, with awesome results.
"Don't eat the raisins." Words to live by
you mean the "rabbit raisins" :))
Nice Touch To Reinstall The Tire & Jack. Going The Extra Mile To Check Tire Pressure...
Dr Crusty's classic reach around, what a classic!
Ahh how lucky Mr.O is.. A wife with beauty, brains and she loves to break balls too. A wife that loves to laugh... A pure 10 on the ugga dugga scale. Thanks for all you 2 do.
So jealous of your relationship with your wife. My wife was tragically born with no sense of humor and I love to laugh and joke around.
How do you tell your wife has a sense of humour ? She gets married.
@@richardbambenek2601 Same!
I come for the diagnostics, always a fantastic job but I would like to put in a vote for a Whats for Lunch segment once a week.
147k miles on my 02 escape gonna tackle struts and outer tierods plus read shocks.
car jumps around with bumpy road, shocks are not doing much!
Thanks for the video , this lowers my stress level! Lol
Ray I don't think I can work.After good lunch.Yea brake clean.Have a good one Ray.Keep up the good work.
Honestly, I just wanted to see you get those end links off! Seems like the same wizardry that you use on caliper bleeders cuz those things never come off that easy! Lol Thanks Dr. O!
that whisker is driving med crazy
Pack grease into the little Allen key (hex key) hole on the sway bar link so that it doesn't fill up with rust.
It is often better to invest the money in a new set of tires instead of replacing slightly worn struts.
Nice video, thanks for posting.
Well done I saw the same test about homemade panther pee must be true. Mrs. O was on fire today.
I had allot of fun tonight here, better then watching Kojak any day of the week. You and your family are a prize for RUclips. That does not come lightly.. Good stuff, just get that guy out of the oil pit :) ..
Watching your videos makes me want to work in a shop again instead of my garage
Your Horse shoe above your door . Good to see you have it the correct way!
How many times I see it upside down. They say your luck will run out...
Happy belated Birthday Eric.
All the way from New Jersey to get struts and shocks replaced by Eric O
@8:28 and there it is the classic reach under. BOOM!!
Babysit? You mean be a father? CORRECT answer! Good job!
Never mind the transmission fluid in the wheel well. Oil has been leaking out of my Subaru for at least 10 years now. I call it "undercoating"
fix it?
if it's turbo, make sure they put a clamp on the turbo drain hose.... don't ask, found a few without clamps and they were real chassis lubers, not to mention my *^(%$* concrete driveway
nice work .
I'M SHOCKED .... Someone had to say it.
you stole that guys oil??? I almost said lol, good job I like the simple job because of all the commentary along the way tons of useful stuff you point out that is easy to overlook doing it in the driveway.
You know you're in trouble when:
My dog like to get under the bed covers!! When I'm there, I raise them for her. When I'm not there, she tries to bulldoze her way under, and generally pushes the covers off of the foot of the bed!! Last night, as I was rearranging the bed covers, where she made an unholy mess of them, I yelled at her that it looked like she took BIG NASTY to my bed!!
That's ok, though! A lil bit of brake clean, and they were good to go!
Eric, I found a cool tool that might make your strut work easier. Mrs. O may not need to hold that shock any more? Should be there in a few days by UPS. Thanks for your sharing your knowledge. Enjoy! Jeff.
Jeff Whisenand I'm looking forward to seeing this tool! Eric O I hope you show us this tool sir. Thanks in advance.
i have the socket that goes on the stem of the shock on the flats. odball thing i found at a garage sale . real handy though.
My life would be complete,
if I had an SMA Ugger Dugger T-shirt
Hurry up & take my money.
Or the good old "There's your problem lady, you have been playing with another mans nuts" Or "It's all nuts and Bolt's, till someone gets shafted" lol or even the good old "son Of a whoha! " " Look out little fella " "Don't be that guy"
'Give it the beans' on the front and 'Two ugga dugga's' on the back, that would be a good one.
Give it the classic reach around, SMA style
Eric from what I've seen in my 30 odd years of working on cars they're mostly always 'double nutted' unless they have the newer style 'nyloc' type nuts. Who knows things maybe different over the ditch where you are?!
I just knew you were gonna pinch the man's oil. lol. keep up the great work.
I love the nuts and bolts videos. Great job Eric!
You and Mrs.O haveing a fun little hammer toss
Fabulous 50'S,How about sensational 60'S? Whats an "ugga dugga? You and Mrs O remind me of "Ralph and Alice Cramden" "The Honeymooners" for the sower members of the group.Eric you have a great sense of humor.Good to see you using tools instead of computers. Thanks for sharing, Ken
An Ugga Dugga is a torquing unit of measurement named by the great German mechanic Jes Gudnteigt. It's supposed to be a trade secret!
Is the "Ugga Dugga, measurement in centimeters, kilometers, inch pounds, foot pounds,Newton Meters, PSI? How many Ugga Dugga's are required to tighten a tire on a 2007 F150?
A good rule to go by is how many letters in the name of the vehicle. If it's a GMC, it's three ugga duggas. If it's a Ford, four. Dodge, five. Chevrolet...well...I can't count that high.
Big secret huh!? And then there is a guy named Dave just giving it all away like it is public knowledge... thanks Dave, thanks a lot...
YEAH I THINK A STATE INSPECTION VIDEO WOULD BE FUN TO WATCH. LOOKING AT THE HAM MRS O FIXED FOR YOU, DO YOU HAVE TAYLOR HAM DINNERS OR SANDWICHES NOW AND THEN? I LIKE A FRIED TAYLOR HAM SANDWICH. HI TO MRS O AND THE DOGS. I ALSO HOPE YOU GET THAT 36 CHEVY BACK IN FOR MORE WORK, DO A VIDEO ON IT AGAIN. I'VE WATCHED THAT ONE 5 OR 6 TIMES ALREADY :-)
