  • The adventures of the Bald Explorer as he discovers Britain. This time I am in the Sussex countryside exploring the ruins of the Bedham Mission Church, built at the end of the Nineteenth century to service the rural farmers and charcoal burners near Petworth.

I walked here once and met an elderly gentlemen of the age of 93, he told me as a child he saw a family wedding where they had candles leading to the entrance from the surrounding woodland, must have been great, I often walk near this ruin.... great video.

I first saw this church from the road whilst travelling in my car. I just caught a glimpse through the trees, but couldn't stop. I never got around to visiting it, so thank you Richard.

Thanks, Richjard, for telling us the history of this interesting little place. In Anglican mythology (I'm CofE myself) a dedication to St Michael and All Angels can have some very odd implications - often it suggests that the building is on a former pagan worship site which has been taken over or, particularly if the church had a previous title and was rededicated to St Michael, that at some point it had been violated, possibly through witchcraft. Presumably, in this case, the former is the more likely?

PS - would you believe there's a paranormal investigation site with a trip to Bedham Church? I've just noticed it. Although it may support my theory, I won't waste my time on it! Your film's more believable.

What amazingly beautiful place. Talk about communing w/ nature. Sometimes I feel closer to God in nature. Open air church in the middle of all the trees!❤ I could still see people being married here. Some couple's argue about a church wedding or an outdoor wedding - I say why not the best of both worlds.

Always interesting subjects....I was surprised to hear you say it was used in 1959. I wonder if it had a roof.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes it is easy to find, but I would need a map to locate it.
