As someone interested in blowing glass with no experience I feel as if I learned quite at bit from watching this video. Great job, on the pipe and the video.
Wow, thank you! This is FINALLY a video on RUclips that explains everything step by step and with music that is chill but doesn't interrupt your focus, and has a clear speaking, well mannered narrator. Likes, subscribed, and re-posted. You are awesome.
Man that's a money maker. It gives me appreciation for those pieces I see that cost an upwards of 100$ or more, and I can understand why: parts, material, compressed gas, and tools. Of course man hours too. Its a beautiful piece here.
Yeah... tobacco lol That's awesome! I've been wanting to learn glassblowing for a while and I didn't have the slightest hint on how it's done! I'll try to find lessons around my area :3
Thank you Brian. I have always wanted to learn to blow glass. Visiting various tobacco stores and asking for direction on this fine art. I have thought that online research would have been tedious; though I have found this video which gives me hope that it is not as complex when one has the right tools. Thank you!
3:37 He cut himself when the tube broke, he should win a cookie or somethin', for taking it like a man and continuing the project without missing a beat. Nice video, one of these days i'll find one that goes through explaining everything necessary to start doing this.
This vid reminded me a lot of the essential lampworking series of DVD's, clear concise information and good filming. I have to say that this is better than probably half the commercial lampworking videos out there today on DVD, you would be amazed at the poor quality of some of them and yet still charging $40-50 per 1hour DVD. If you ever produce a instructional dvd on this (especially functional glass as there isn't really one out there) i would buy it in a heart beat.

awesome work! And I love your workshop! Pretty nice environment to create all sorts of beautiful stuff.
I like the simple and basic tool use, jus shows how a good glassworker, or torch worker can do with just basic tools...kudos,this was the example for my first pipe 2 years ago...rock on..Pete
The hand torch he is using is a National 3a from the looks of it, they run around $80, the kiln is a AIM kiln probably in the range of $500-750, the tools and graphite plate all run in the range of $30-50+ each, the glass itself isn't that expensive, untill you factor in how much of you you will end up waisting in the process of learning. Glass is by no means a cheap/easy hobby to pick up, but if you have the tallent for it and the passion, its damn well worth it.
I'm really happy I saw your tutorial. I am currently looking into getting a torch set up and every other tutorial i have seen has been using a torch that cost at least a GRAND :( Im really encouraged to start with a National 8m Torch with the sm7 tip (Idk if you know anything about that torch), once i saw you make this beautiful piece without the crazy expensive torch :)
Couple of things though, Fuming is done with fine silver (sterling wont work), and you may have mentioned attaching the punty (the 2nd handle) to the peice after raking, and annealing for boro is 1050F, still a really well made vid, just some minor factual problems :)
FYI to the newbies... the propane tank only needs to be open a SINGLE turn. When shit is on fire you don't wanna be wasting time. Your Oxy tank should be open all the way though.
I've been doing a little research on glass blowing and crafting, but there's one thing I haven't been able to really get a grasp on. I have a good understanding of how the glass is shaped and sculpted during the heating process and the like. But it's how a person goes about changing the color of the glass that's escaping me, despite watching through this. I've read that some people nowadays tend to use colored glass shards sometimes to color to their pieces, but what about minerals? Like sulfur or cobalt? Raw minerals produce certain colours, so theoretically, wouldn't that mean that adding those to the molten glass would allow for the colour to shift?
Correct. The factories have many minerals to add into the molten glass. Adding copper gives a blue glass is one example. There are several videos of this process here in RUclips.
michael leeder Eh,well, I stumbled on your video while trying to find one on changing the colour of glass, but I haven't exactly had much luck on that end. I keep finding mostly tutorials on how glass is shaped or others making their projects. But thank you for the information! It was driving me nuts, trying to figure this out!
Love the vids always looking for scrap tubes or rods I'm disabled and still fighting my case and I never had time for the art and now I have no money for it So any type would be great full to help me learn

Kilning heats up the entire piece to the same temperature and also anneals it to make it stronger. It prevents the glass from cracking.

@thelarryguy as it is stated in the credits, the musician is by Aamon Cipra, a composer in the madison area.
I need more of this
FYI to the newbies... the propane tank only needs to be open a SINGLE turn. When shit is on fire you don't wanna be wasting time. Your Oxy tank should be open all the way though.
