We need more half-way houses. If you've been in prison 5plus yrs in prison, the world has changed so much. Also, you haven't had bills, budgets, fully taking care of yourself. Just being thrown back into the world with no training on how to live is why alot of ppl end up back in jail/ prison. I think less than 2yrs inside, a half-way house shld be upto individual. 2-5yrs shld be case by case. 5yrs plus shld be mandatory. There are similar issues with drug rehab. If you've been living day to day for years with only concern being getting money for drugs, maybe cigs & some food, you have to learn how to integrate back into the world.
I went to prison in 2006, did 4 & some change & ur damn right! I went to the county with a flip phone & my car keys lol come home with a computer handed to me that makes calls & a ride in a car that u push to start lol
I used to work with a lot of women from a local halfway house at my job. They're usually only allowed to stay their for 6 months. In some cases, they can get a few extra months, but they have to have a good reason and it's a difficult process. They all complained about how much they hate it and how they can't wait to get out. One girl I worked with was having to use our cash register computer to check apartment listings and answer emails while we were serving customers because that's the only internet access she could get. They don't let them use computers at the house. She quit after leaving the house and our boss stopped hiring those girls because they're so unreliable.
I agree and if they put them in a half way house at the end of their sentences they would have a much better chance. But let's face it the system has no interest in helping people. Prisons are big business and they need inmates.
Awesome! As a recovering addict myself, I love to see people be supported in recovery and be focused and strong enough as a brotherhood to smash those demons and fight along side each other!!! Well done guys!! Never give up and never forget people actually do want to help if you want to help yourself
I'm UK too, and it's not that much more effort to find APS on other platforms, but that wasn't really my point. As far as this style of content goes, It's a laudable thing that Joe wants to focus his time and effort on showing the help people are willing to offer, and the reasons behind why they do. It's a positive thing in the world, and I'm all for it. But I also think this channel is a stepping stone to Joe developing something else.
He should look into running his videos on a local public access TV station, in addition to putting them on RUclips. That way maybe people could see them while they're in prison, if their prison happens to have a cable package that runs the public access station. Most basic cable packages have these stations, and I think they may even be regular free broadcast stations, anyway.
The way things are going for the future cord cutting is very popular and internet is becoming the new "T.V." .. As long as there is good content creators on this platform RUclips will outshine most television or cable skipping any middle man and getting paid fairly.
My father is an alcoholic and chain smoker. Two habits that I never picked up. He still goes to work everyday and works hard. He just doesn't have much to show for it.
Hopefully you can stay that way, especially for the smoking bit. Even only picking it up for a small amount of time will have long term effects on you. It's similar to drugs, you may have been clean for years, but it's real easy to go back into those old habits again.
I struggled with drinking as well, unfortunately it took a DUI for me too buckle up. Lol when your wasting all your money in court fines you have no money for alcohol.
2 years clean in September 20, 2018... No AA or NA used. Just the Catholic Faith, Mental health counciling and DnA counciling. AA and NA to me is a crutch. You can use plenty of other supports, time consuming and constructive things to do, but all in all it has to be YOU that decides you're done.
Joe, this video is superb. This is really where After Prison Show will start seeing great returns on its effort to help people. Giving groups like this a voice will be far more productive than trying direct interventions. For every 5 direct interventions, maybe only one will work. Whereas these groups will reach a lot more people and be better able to give practical help.
His timeline doesn't make sense, he's 58 so he was born in 1960, he said his first trip to jail was right after highschool in 1994?? He was 34 years old so how was it right after highschool? Unless you cut out some of his story right there.
I'm an atheist but I can understand where he is coming from. Religion has almost always been a part of programs for people with addiction in America and here in Ireland. While I don't believe in it myself, many find it helps them. He believes that having faith and praying together, attending church together as a group, will help. It's his program so why can he not run it the way he wants to? There are other programs for people who don't have a religion. His is not the only half way house, it just happens to be faith based. He has still helped so many people. Maybe if it ever gets to how big he would like it to be they won't have strict rules on church attendance and bible study, but for now he is literally harming no one and only helping people. He has dedicated his life to it. What are you doing to help down and out ex-cons and addicts? I'm guessing absolutely nothing. Or this is the internet so you could turn around and completely make something up just to be contrary.
Been there done that. I lived in a halfway house for 2 years in Baltimore City. The man that runs it Bruce White was a super hardcore drug dealer back in the day his one leg is shorter than the other and has to wear custom shoes after being shot up by a swat team. He now runs a network of houses and clinics. The saddest thing in my time there was our house manager who was a pure soul, unfortunately slipped up and it cost him his life. I never did any long time locked up but I know, understand, and struggle every day with addiction.

I get the desire to do these videos and it's cool and all but I know I'm not alone in wondering where the 1 million show is. Eat a Carolina reaper and tattoo dave or something hahaha

I failed at the halfway house I was in and had to finish out the rest of my sentence in the county jail.... It's like what Danny says it's a product that's built to bring you down in every way shape or form.

I currently work for a halfway house that’s contracted with the Federal Prison system. We house about 80+ felons also felons who have done there time and are serving their probation also Pretrial guys who haven’t been sentenced yet. Halfway house I believe does help the people who need it. Otherwise it’s really a waste and time for the felon and the staff members. I’ve seen guys who make good time out of their halfway house time and others who are just there to get by. Also halfway house I think felons who come to them think it’s easy time to be done. It’s really not. You are your own “guard” ain’t nobody telling you when you gotta be back. You hold your own self accountable. Also the paperwork that needs to be done to even get out on passes from the halfway house can be a burden to some that did lots of time. To me the saddest part of it all. You see guys who do so good return within a year either on a violation or a new charge.
I'm Catholic and I believe in God but shunning someone away because they dont believe in "Your God" is the one thing the lord says not to do. "Love thy neighbor as thyself." This is what you're gonna encounter in the south. The bible belt of VA. I love APS and I love all the videos but as I'm scrolling through the comments it seems as though everyone wants the OG Videos. Funny,Crazy Prison Stories. We love Danny and all the stuff you guys are putting together but throw a little bit of the OG APS Videos in there. Much love
Exactly. Really defeats the whole underpinned (alleged) pillar of treating all as you want to be treated. Instead, it’s oh, you believe in a different wacky book than the wacky book I believe in. Your irredeemable. Goodbye. good book!
I'm so glad I found your channel. Joe, I have a quick question (if you don't mind) - I'm a substance abuse counseling student who is starting my internship at a mens prison outside of Austin (Kyle Correctional). Did you and Dave have to take classes while you were locked up regarding substance abuse and if so, what suggestions would you give me to make me a better counselor for my clients? Again, thanks for the hard work you do on APS and I'm always excited to get the notification of a new video.
My hats off to this guy for helping addicts that want to recover and change there life. My only gripe is about the mentality that most of these halfway houses and some rehab facilities about relapse. It's going to happen, he should understand that being a addict himself. I get that they messed up, put other recovering addicts in a dangerous situation, but why put them out after the first mistake? Now not only has the person relapsed, they are now homeless with no where to go. Why not have consequences that are severe but don't immediate men being kicked out
I agree. As long as the recovering addict pays rent and does his part, he should be allowed to stay even if he makes mistakes. Maybe give hin 3 chances to slip up, at the very least
Thank you Eric for your awesome comments. That is a question that I get a lot and unfortunately it's a situation that happens in halfway houses. It breaks my heart when I have to put someone out, it really does. I have to protect the house as a whole by setting boundaries. Letting one man use drugs or alcohol and continue to stay in the house is a risk primarily to the guy who has just a few days or weeks or months clean and is doing everything he can to stay straight. That guy may go out and use as a result of another using. Plus what would it say to the guy doing the right thing? Because sometimes this addict says screw it maybe it is easier to go back to drinking. Thank God I have a great support group. Now the guys that do get put out can come back if they go get treatment like detoxing and didn't leave setting the place on fire. But most don't and go out and continue to do what got them put out in the first place I hope this answers your questions a little better.
Joe, its awesome that you have networked with this organization! I hope Danny sees this as a potential option! APS continues to seek out real organic positive content!
We need places like this in Harrisonburg VA. We have one really crappy halfway house. No Oxford houses or really anything. We need this stuff around everywhere
Joe you’re going to be a millionaire one day. I know thats not the goal here is, but I’m just talking about success. What you’re doing is going to grow into something huge
Good job having this guy speak, but Joe I believe you hit 1 mil subs because of you being in front of the camera telling your stories. I hope I'm wrong and this new thing your trying works but please don't forget what got you to 1 mil. subs to srart with. Great work Cody! Hi Dave. Take care guys.
all hunky dory huh that guy that relapsed so let me guess he drink something you something and then your love and need for helping him just flew flew out the window huh? LOL I'm sure that was a big help for the guy LOL good job bud
Their is an Oxford house in my area. I know a couple of people that have been there. Transitioning from homelessness to your own place and a steady job is rough.
Can Danny join his halfway house organization and you should set up something so we could help fund Danny so he could afford this until he gets a job .
I'm so proud of what this channel has become it's really awesome what you guys are doing. Dave sounds like really great guy that has a big heart just like you ,Dave and Cody. That place sounds like it would be great for Danny if he could possibly get in. Don't know why Netflix hasn't hit you up yet. APS Army/Family!!!
These success stories are really great to hear. We all have done things that are not the best, some do worse things than others, but I believe everyone can achieve success. Keep showing the stories because I believe they give people hope that they can get to a point that they're striving for.
I hope Danny finds a job so he can have a place like this to start his life. Age doesn't matter. I'm still waiting to maintain a good job so I can get my own place I am Joe's age. I'm a year older though I was born in 1981. I wasn't ever in prison but the free world doesn't feel free when basically all your money goes to taxes. Following the rules and your still broke. I am trying to be a bridge painter. I just got laid off. I hope I can find work before October.
THANK YOU CODY JOE AND GAY DAVE ONE LOVE WATCHING THIS JUST KEPT ME ON TRACK HSVENT BEEN BACK TO THA JIONT SEEN 2010 AND NEVER GOING BACK LOVA THIS CHANNEL GUYS PLZ KEEP IT GOING
Joe you are an amazing guy and you are truly inspirational, and helping people talk about what they have been through and helping them by talking to them.
I don’t think people in the comment section don’t understand what this man who requires you to go to church is trying to achieve. I’m a nihilist myself, but I still respect others peoples believes and try to understand. This man here wants you to have a daily routine, to socialize and most of all to have faith. Non-religious people tend to fall into depression more likely than religious people for obvious reasons.
As far as the religion part of it I think it’s fine. It’s not like these guys get there and all of a sudden they find out they have to go to church. I’m pretty sure I heard him mention in there that they find out the rules etc. for their house before they get there so they know what they are getting into. They have found that faith was a big part of their success so they choose to cater to those who may also find that a part of their success. If that’s a problem for someone then I’m sure there are plenty of other places that don’t have such a strict religious or not religious requirement at all. Otherwise amazing video Joe and team. Loved to hear and see the information and how this type of thing works.
It was one of the awesomest interviews I've ever watched. Quality was awesome as well. keep up the great work Joe and I love the direction of the chain on you guys doing exactly what I thought you guys were going to be doing. Took a little bit of networking and digging and skill developing but you've done it your only going to get bigger bro exciting times
There should be other options than faith-based halfway houses. That's a big NOPE, especially in a country that claims church and state are separate. The justice system should not be associated to faith-based institutions in any way and if this guy gets government money in any way for his halfway house, that should be ILLEGAL in a country where church and state are separate.
I don’t know how I feel about this guy. Straight out of prison and you have to pay 500$ a month . It’s probably hard enough to find a job with a record. On top of that you have to find one that’s going to pay well considering the fact that you have to eat and get around too. Also why would you force someone to go to church? Not everyone believes in god or believes in the same religion as you. I understand wanting to help people but damn. This is why so many people are homeless.
My brother has just been released from prison today after 4 years, I’m so excited I shed a tear when he called me
I'm in a halfway house rn saving money 15 months clean getting my life back on track ready to re enter society this the best I felt in years
APS on its way to having its own production company. Each video gets exponentially better. But don’t forget to “dive” into some more prison stories.

Another amazing video guys!!
These videos keep my head up (in recovery as well). Thank you David! And thank you to everyone who works on AfterPrisonShow.
Goodbye.
good book!
2020 maxed out. Right around the corner
Wooo. 1 mil. Gratz
"shot" was probably the wrong word to use being that alot of the people are drug users/alcoholics
Never trust an addict.
Richard Vargus weed
The fact that you are asking such a question puts you above many of the substance abuse councillors I have met.
Use the 80 20 rule 80 percent are lost 20 percent will really try
@@angiet7380 not really what she was looking for I think she is looking for more liger answer
Why not have consequences that are severe but don't immediate men being kicked out
Prison was the first warning...
They have had enough chances. It isn't what is best for the offender, but he has to think of what is best for the entire house.
I agree. As long as the recovering addict pays rent and does his part, he should be allowed to stay even if he makes mistakes. Maybe give hin 3 chances to slip up, at the very least
if they got insurance they can just cycle in between insurance ran places. It's a rough cycle. I ran threw them dozens of time over many years.
Thank you David Welcome to APS
Joe, its awesome that you have networked with this organization! I hope Danny sees this as a potential option! APS continues to seek out real organic positive content!
This documentary type videos are inspirational, truly awesome!
Agreed 100%
Yup. Joe should share the camera with the interviewee
True that... he needs todo the interview's like he did with the federal agent
100% didn’t Evan watch the whole video I was just to bored
all hunky dory huh that guy that relapsed so let me guess he drink something you something and then your love and need for helping him just flew flew out the window huh? LOL I'm sure that was a big help for the guy LOL good job bud
hey joe I live in powhatan va and I would like to tell my story
Tell your story
We all most likely got stories bro! Thats kinda what brings us all here to this channel lol
@@josephmcvay6217
Not me. I listen to these stories to hopefully help me steer away from one day having to tell these same stories
Joseph McVay maybe he means he was in prison before idiot
Send APS a message!
He just hit one mil I'm so happy for you joe I remember watching at 100k
So glad I didn't have to go to a halfway house after prison. I'll keep it at that.
Alcohol will do some crazy shit to you and is NOT an easy addiction to get under control.
This halfway house seems like a decent place.
HI
Unrelated:
Just realized you reach 1 million subs, congrats Joe! you've come so far since 2016, I've been subbed myself since you had 200k
That was awesome!
Their is an Oxford house in my area. I know a couple of people that have been there. Transitioning from homelessness to your own place and a steady job is rough.
here I am drinking a beer and catching up on APS
Can Danny join his halfway house organization and you should set up something so we could help fund Danny so he could afford this until he gets a job .
I'm so proud of what this channel has become it's really awesome what you guys are doing. Dave sounds like really great guy that has a big heart just like you ,Dave and Cody. That place sounds like it would be great for Danny if he could possibly get in. Don't know why Netflix hasn't hit you up yet. APS Army/Family!!!
APS turning into a legit film production studio or what?
This guy is high on Xanax. Serious
Why do you keep commenting about this dude being on benzos?
Congrats on 1 mil
Is it me or does this dude look like he doesn't get enough sleep at all. Must be a hard worker
I'm gonna open up my own half-way house. With any stupid rules
against heroin or blackjack.
Thinking about naming it *the Smack Shack.*
Great to see how this channel is growing and evolving
This guy has found God's purpose in his life. God bless him and APS!
A lot of times helping others is a way to help yourself.
Comgrats on a million you deserve it man.
Great production!! APS ROCKS!!
This is not a halfway house I'll show you a real halfway house
so appreciative of what yall are doing. hugs and prayers .. i hope you continue to be blessed
Look out, AfterPrisonShow is starting to remind me of a grungy Vice News. Keep up the great work!
David I know how you feel man. Stay positive. Glad you are home.
It’s terrible living in these places. It’s hell on earth. Drugs are rampant. Crimes are rampant.
That was amazing, good work Joe!
