  • This is the sixth in a series of videos examining leftist RUclipsrs who presented their political analysis of the Ukraine situation prior to the invasion, and illustrating the ways in which their analysis failed. In this video I’m examining Caleb Maupin.

    I have a petty question, why is this video part of the “learning about the left” serie?
    I mean, Maupin is a nationalist who claims to be a lefty (literally what fascists did in the 20th century) and repeats talking points of and directly works for a state that is literally the closest thing we have seen in this century to 20th century’s fascism… how he is “on the left”? Just because he claims he a ML?

    • @ilianceroni
      @ilianceroni Год назад +5

      It goes without saying, currently there are a lot of fascists movement and parties, many in power all over the world, but they’re all more in tune with the current political status quo (like, in Italy and France they got a female leader, that was impossible in the first half of the 20th century). However Putin’s Russia, especially after the invasion has gone mask down, looking incredibly similar to the past versions of the “ideology”, so much so that even centrist have realised it’s fascism

    • @ilianceroni

      @@wabakoen5548 yes, he is an American nationalist. As pointed out in the video, he’s an “American exceptionslist”. Exceptionalism is a nationalist believe, as it thinks of one nation (in this case the US) as inherently “special”, an exception compared to other countries/nations.

      I agree with you actually. I've said elsewhere that I don't consider Maupin a leftist, any more than I consider Vaush or Hasanabi a leftist. But Maupin is widely known as a leftist, and markets himself as a kind of communist, and he's very similar to Deng, who is still known as a leftist. Additionally, if I say he's not a leftist who's going to pay any attention to that? It's just one rando's opinion. So I put him in here with the other self-declared leftists.

      @@ilianceroni yes, this is why I started my series on Duginism. It's noteworthy that Maupin attended a Nazbol event in Russia and was chummy with Dugin. They're both nationalists. But being a nationalist, even a very patriotic and even imperialist nationalist, is still considered well within leftism by people who view Stalin and Mao as good leftists. Stalin was a Russian exceptionalist, and Mao was a Sino-exceptionalist (though to his credit an anti-Han chauvinist).

      Yes I am, I've been writing more of the script recently. I don't have a good opinion of either serpentza or laowhy86. They both started out with some legitimate content, but became increasingly biased, clickbaity, and sensationalist. I wouldn't recommend people watch either channel.

    I don't know I don't blame anybody for not thinking Russia was going to invade Ukraine it was an incredibly stupid action, it was obvious that NATO would try to turn it into a quagmire for the Russians, and in the months leading up to an invasion the Russians failed to assemble even a fraction of the forces that would be necessary to occupy Ukraine. In fact it turned out that Russia's manpower, equipment, and logistical situation was even worse than it appeared.

    • @veritasetcaritas
      @veritasetcaritas  Год назад +5

      There were good reasons for not knowing if Russia would invade, or being doubtful over whether or not they would invade. But dogmatically asserting, without any evidence at all, that Russia would certainly not invade, was irrational. None of these leftists who made such an assertion did so for logical or rational reasons. Some of them are literally paid by state propaganda outlets to amplify Russian propaganda, some of them are explicitly campist so they'll just automatically say the opposite of whatever the West says, and some of them are just plain ignorant. There were no good reasons to insist Russia wouldn't invade, especially given the last ten years of aggressive Russian irredentism in the region and Putin's explicitly expansionist plans. Russia never needed to win this war in order to get what they want. They've already offered Ukraine peace terms requiring Ukraine to give up conquered territory and submit to being Russia's subordinate. Putin clearly believes he has placed himself in a good position with this war. Russia can continue the war longer than Ukraine can.

    • @noco7243
      @noco7243 Год назад +1

      Yeah. I honestly didn't think they'd do it.
      From what I was hearing at the time in the media along with what I heard from friends of mine who served in the Russian army pre-war, they didn't have nearly enough troops on the border to successfully win a war with Ukraine (assuming you and your adversary has equally advanced equipment, you'd want to have a 3-1 ratio for the invader). This coupled with the fact that the Russian army was nowhere near modernized enough (they had roughly 40% modernization, had a mostly conscript army with a relatively smaller contract army in comparison), and that they really hadn't been trained for/had enough experience with such an invasion, it would be far too risky. This isn't even mentioning the corruption issue and the important fact that they didn't even announce that they'd invade or give any Causus beli for the invasion until after it had already started.
      I genuinely didn't think they'd do it because it could result in what is obviously happening right now. That being said, I still didn't expect it to go this badly, I assumed it would be like the 2003 invasion of Iraq but with far more casualties for the Russians there there was for the Americans.
      I didn't predict there'd be a contested airspace, a Ukrainian government that's still winning and in charge of the country, or that the west would still aid the Ukrainian Military. (and now apparently a coup). I simultaneously underestimated the Russians military issues and militarism and overestimated their competence. Odd
