After what feels like the longest wait, Final Fantasy VII Remake is here! In this two part video series, I'll be discussing both the game and the story in separate videos, so please enjoy Part 1 as I work on Part 2 during May.
I'll be replaying 7R on my Twitch channel if any of you are interested in watching me scuffle with Roche, slam down some drinks in Tifa's bar or indulge in some butter Tea with Palmer. EXCITING TIMES!

fyi, PS4 pro user here. the door, flower and other textures are exactly the same (to reference 14:16) and it was jarring as hell. i got to play it a bit early so assumed the textures that were bad were gonna be sorted in the day one patch i thought was gonna be a thing like most games recently. but then i went through the game again on hard earlier this week and still shitty so.... yeah...
also good job on the vid Clemps.

I kinda wish Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie were playable characters unique from the main 4. It would've given the player a much greater attachment to them and therefore would've made their endings even more touching. NPC deaths are generally inconsequential to most players whereas the death of playable characters cuts most players. It's a good story telling tool that got overlooked in development.

Question: "If we follow this Remake’s story, then the next installment might have major changes compared to the original, right?"
Kitase: "I’ve talked about this extensively with Nomura, but I’m sure fans of the original are expecting to revisit familiar locations and scenes, so we have strong feelings to not stray away from that. From here on out, we’re not drastically changing the story and making it into something completely different than the original. Even though it’s a Remake, please assume that FF7 will still be FF7 as usual."
      *edit*
Nojima added: "For me, I create scenarios that follow the general flow of the original story but with the assumption that the way things are presented or how events occur might be slightly different. "

@@TheSlammurai I was thinking about this earlier. I do think they should keep his limits as the transformations, though I definitely think removing the elemental affinity would be a good idea.
So Vincent transforms and he loses access to items/magic just like original. This time however we can control him and he has a similar set up to the summons. He can attack, and he has access to a couple of special abilities so he's not completely out of our control.
Whether it's a permanent state until the end of the fight or it's timed (again like the summons) l don't know. It'd be pretty cool too have a big flashy move when the timer runs out and he goes back to being Vincent again.
They could of course just have him transform, do a special move, and then immediately go back to being Vincent. That would certainly be the easier option as otherwise they would have to create all the animation assets for controlling even more characters.

Mild Spoilers regarding the Ending of the remake:
As someone that has heavily mixed feelings regarding the ending and the "defying fate" plot line, i'm at the same time giddy with joy and excitement, yet filled with potential dread,
Maybe Sephiroth wont be the big bad, maybe Jenova will have a more active role in the story? Will Aerith still get skewered? Will there be more fake-out dream scenes? Is the extra fluff from the compilation going to be shoe-horned into this? WHAT THE FUCK WILL THEY DO WITH ZACK?
You just cant turn your eyes away from a good train wreck, and with the way this is going, it will probably be the biggest train wreck possible, i am almost 100% expecting Genesis and the Sephiroth Brothers to show up during the next game, with Angel and Dirge of Cerberus Vincent in all of their post Kingdom Hearts Nomura Glory.
I'm all in for Nomuras Wild ride, and I am expecting we will reach some Kingdom Hearts and Rebuild of Evangelion type of Shenanigans.
Final Fantasy 7.77 YOU CAN(NOT) REMAKE will be one hell of a beautiful train wreck. The mere thought of it fills me with hope an despair
All aboard Nomura's wild ride, we are going at 100000 miles per hour,multi-track drifting and the brakes have been removed, one way or another it will be glorious.

Hey Clemp, thanks, genuinely, for doing this video. I know you probably just did it because you wanted to but I was really apprehensive about FF7R from everything I've read about it and my special attachment to the original, and seeing you be completely honest and blunt about the game like this just feels nice and alleviates fears I had. I need to give the game a try, it doesn't have to be a 1:1 copy to be a good game.

Two things I'm hoping they keep for this remake.
    1: the different Bahamut summons
I personally enjoyed these because it not only showed that Bahamut was prominent in every aspect, but also diversed him as not just a singular entity, almost like a species.
    2: The Jenova fights
    I think this is self-explanatory

I didn't enjoyed it as much as i wanted to, I don't like action RPGs and what they offered didn't impress me, the battles were too long, I'm sure that for does that liked the system were excited for battles but to me it felt like a drag, also, maybe it's just me but I felt that they really focused the fights on staggering the opponet, like I didn't do to much damage unless I stagger them which makes sense but it felt weird for me, but my biggest problem in combat was the camera, some times it wouldn't let me see the enemies or will spin in some battles.
The secondary missions felt like filler, sure you get to see around Midgar and interact with it's citizens but that didn't feel like a reward to me.
The dungeons (at least the majority) really drag on and on, it felt like they were stretching them just to have more content.
But for things I enjoyed, the interactions, I loved the Jessie back story and I hope they do something similar going forward, the materia system was perfect and I find the character's unique modes really interesting and give you an incentive to switch characters ( something that I actually enjoyed about battles)
I'll give my opinions on the story in your next video, looking forward for it.

For flying enemies: The material we need for this I believe is already in the original. The "Float" spell.

What about the Long Range Materia? Originally first available in the Mythral Mines, which conveniently happens to be the first dungeon after Midgar in FF7. The image of Cloud casually slicing out blade beams like those in the motorcycle sections and Tifa punching out balls of ki is an exciting prospect. The kicker, though, would be that just like Magnify in part one, there's only a single copy of the Materia available, so you have to pick who gets to melee from a distance.

I wasn't really planning on purchasing this game at first because of stuff I'd heard about the ending, but given that a lot of people, including old-school FFVII fans seem to enjoy it just fine, makes me think I should give it a shot. Really, most people seem to agree it's good like 90% of the way through and the ending is the only divisive part.

There's a reason I've come to love this channel. Clemps is weird as shit but so fucking loveable. He's like that redheaded sibling everyone knows is adopted but loved regardless. Your review is bang on. It's really unfathomable how lifelike the characters are. The goddamn dogs react to your presence! The dog!! It moved its head when I ran by. It telescoped my movements. The amount of care/attention it must've taken to do this should be illegal.
Then there's the banter; the shinra stair sequence dialogue had me in tears. Barret acts black. Not stereotypically black, actually black. Amazing. The NPC's are quite diverse in age/gender/race. Which is a welcome addition without pushing a narrative.
Didn't have an issue with the story because I've all but forgotten the nuances of the first game. 97 was a long time ago, couldn't appreciate a great story at 12. Was much more concerned with flashy moves and battling/summons. Don't remember the original anyway.
The battle system is incredible. Combining turn base and action elements cohesively is no small feet. Tifa plays like a monk, barret a tank, cloud a swordsman and aerith a mage. They're all very unique and play entirely differently. Some are better suited for a particular situation. More importantly, the game forces the player to explore each character, at least on a superficial level. The multitude of choices; attacking, healing, blocking, switching, staggering, movement patterns, etc can initially become overwhelming. But some hours in the Colosseum, understanding each characters nuances makes combat extremely pleasurable. The difference between playing correctly and not is massive. Spamming attacks will get you killed. Very few games manage to reward/punish player without changing difficult. Fights can be a 10s faceroll or 10 minute struggle for life. All depends on player choice. My only gripe was the lack of it. Replaying on harder difficulty - skipping the cutscenes exposes how combat light the main campaign is. Hopefully, subsequent releases changes that.
The summon's were great, even though they obviously cut Bahamut's megaflare animation. Wasn't too happy with that. It's not like I'm a big fan or anything..
Overall 9+. God of war was better. Best game I've ever played actually. Like you, the low resolution graphical short falls were stark, especially since the majority of the game is absolutely gorgeous. Did I mention, the character models have ankles!?! Ankles... Just wow.

Ok, i am an old fan of FF7. And i mean old, i grew up watching my aunt and uncle playing this game and when they gifted me their old ps1 this was the game i begged them to let me play. I played it to completion, couldn't kill all Weapons, Ruby was a bitch, but i got all summons, the best materia, all party members and their ultimate weapons + limits, lived through the entire story and cried at the end.
Now i have recently played the Remake and.....its not bad. It draws a lot from the original, the music is fantastic, the combat is fun and a bit addictive and the exploration is not that bad.
The only thing that worries me is....well the story.
Dont get me wrong i loved how much they fleshed out the world and characters in the game. Heck i didnt even remember the members of Avalanche that died when the plate fell on the slums but now i did and i will remember Jessie, Biggs, Wedge and the moments they shared with us...but here is the problem, not going to spoil anything, that honor goes to Clemps, it seems they are trying to create a Golden Ending for FF7. You know, the tipical where all main characters survive and live a happily ever after. It feels a bit....ok no, it feels A LOT kingdom heartsy specially with the addition of the, mmmmm lets call them smoky condoms no spoilers that way, smoky condoms and their shenanigans...as well as Mommy Issues and his shenaniganery.
As an old fan, i see the remake's story as a new story being told with known characters in a "what if" scenario but...it also worries me that the new generations will get something not as good as the original in the story department and that, i feel, would be a shame.
The story of the original taught me the concepts of caring for our planet, freedom, tragedy and hope and that is what i want the remake to do, even if the story is not the same, i want it to be able to inspire in its own way, to teach things like the original did. If they manage that, then i will be satisfied, because a RPG is more than just a game, its an adventure in a new, fantastic world...and that is something i feel it has been on the decline lately.
Sorry for the testament, but i needed to say this.
Waiting for part 2 Clemps, dont let us hanging too long!

    • @raziyatheseeker
      @raziyatheseeker 4 года назад +1

I totally get the mixed feel for the remake's additions. The newer story bits are concerning. Given how they handled the evacuation of the falling plate's zone in 7R, your Golden Ending concerns are valid. Even though I'm stoked to see the rest of the game world be fleshed out as much as Midgar, I am worried about the KH levels of tomfoolery. And even if a "what if" scenario, I can see the worry that newer generations wouldn't play the original.

I also want another variant of the "Fanservice Dress" scenes and have it be a Swimsuit scene with Tifa and Aerith. Have it be unlockable swim suits/swim trunks and other outfits (skins) for a New Game+ or something.
Having Surfing, and/or Beach minigames (like volleyball) for a fun/goofy distraction like the dancing scene too.

This game is easily an 8 or 9 out of 10. It's amazing if you're a fan of the original, and even a fan of jrpgs in general. It has it's flaws sure, but everything else it does so good and right that those get really downplayed.
The ending itself isn't as bad as people make it out to be, because it sets it up to where(without spoiling), it makes it so the remake doesn't have to 100% follow the original game's script, and can go on its own merit.
Either way, it's a great game to have, and can't wait for part 2.

As a fan of the original who wanted new players to experience FF7's story and themes without having to pop in a 23 years old PS1 game, the ending is pretty dissapointing.
This never was a 1:1 remake from the start. The amount of stuff they added and expanded upon without changing the major story beats could already amount to a new game and was like a dream come true. That's an aspect I favor in great remakes like RE1 and RE2's: they change enough and expand on things that make both new and old players experience new things, while keeping the same overrall feeling and iconic narrative moments.
It didn't matter that the major story beats were the same, this game was for the new players, and I'm happy with the new, expanded stuff, aswell with the reinterpretation of the classic scenes.
Which take us to the ending. It's all still very cryptic, but the way they framed it and used some of the new stuff (the ghosts), it seemed like their direction going forward is to change very heavily the plot of the OG, turning this into a "fight against destiny" narrative that, while may be good in the long run, deviates too much from the Originals themes. It seems this won't be a story about death and its consequences anymore, so it saddens me that the majority of today's playerbase will never experience such powerful message.
I'm curious to see how it develops, but I really don't feel like playing the other parts until this whole project is over and we can look at the complete picture.

    (Vague-but-potentially-massive spoilers below)
The thing I would like to see most in the sequel is them doing a surprise reveal that this is secretly also a canonical sequel to Chrono Trigger, and that Marle is actually Marle, here because they discovered that Jenova is either the same species as, or a past or future version of Lavos, but is simply laying low because she realized how this world's version of The Entity reacts poorly to attempts to change history, and subtly helps to aid the party in doing so. To be honest, it's the only thing that would make me forgive all this shoehorned-in defying destiny nonsense. Final Fantasy 7 is a story about making the best of the shitty hand fate deals you, not about the nature of fate and whether it can be changed. If they tie it in with a story that *IS* about whether or not fate can be changed, on the other hand...

I can't wait to see how she's going to play! And what they're going to do with her story.

A ninja in this combat system. Fuck yes!
They do have a job to differentiate her from Tifa, but seeing how different Melee-Mode Barret is from Cloud I think they will nail it.

What I’m looking forward to in part 2 is just going out to the field and looking around and possibly meeting my boyfriend Vincent.

GaptoothBast#rd I really enjoyed the remake. My only real problems with the game are the side quests and how some blend together and how some areas drag on. Also fighting enemies in the air was kinda janky.
