Will definitely try this next spring. Deer devastated my tulips, then petunias, geraniums and my tomato plants during the summer. Drove me crazy. Let you know next years.
I was reading the comments and people ask questions that you clearly stated on the video. My brother up in Ga. is having deer trouble, so I will pass this on to him.
I have a part 2 video you might want to pass on as well which stresses reapplication after rain.. Something I didn't mention in the original video.. ruclips.net/video/z5yBokxMUP4/видео.html
Sounds easy enough, and cheap. Thanks for the tip! I'm going to give this a try. Poor deer are very hungry right now. I feel for them, but not enough to let them eat my plants.
Bought some deer resistant shrubs for my back yard. Two days later, the deer had stripped all the leaves (so much for "deer resistant"). I love homemade recipes and will try it. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful. Thank you for showing us this. (Deer keep eating my newly flowered dylilies. Maddening. Wait all year for them, then, in one night, flowers gone). Thank you. ¿Is it the smell or the pepper that keeps them away?
likely a little of both i would think.. i also posted this part 2 video that stresses reapplication after rain: ruclips.net/video/z5yBokxMUP4/видео.html
I have the same problem I even put up smal Frances and they knock them over and pull my tulips exposing the bulbs...gonna give this a try...I already tried the Urine method without results.
You think this smells bad? We had some leftover from the previous year and it is gawdawful! Smells like a pig farm. In our case, we use a pump-up sprayer (can't imagine hand painting it on so many plants) and spray the garden perimeter. (I do it a night so that the smell dissipates enough before the neighbors complain). Works well. Originally saw the recipe on Bob Villa's site.
You responded to my concerns about eliminating the egg shell but mentioned the pepper and garlic clumped up and clogged the spray. Understood. However I do not have a clustered area where the paint brush would suffice so my thought is what about putting the mixed solution in a glass jar/container with a metal screw top lid. Punch nail holes in the lid and use as a shaker over the plant. The shaking should keep the solution better mixed and hopefully prevent the clumping. Your thoughts on how this might work?
Sometimes we get alot of rain here. How often do you need to reapply mixture to the plants? I will try. The deer population has really grown over the past few years and they destroyed my landscaping last year until there was nothing left. Not only did they destroy flower beds, the ate all my beautiful hosta plants. I must try ASAP.
Not for nothing, if you have no dogs that will eat them throw one moth ball per every 10 feet (linear feet) of garden. Replace used balls every month. Been doing that for 15 years with 100% success.
@@lisacrosland6103 I have iris in 5 gardens that employ moth balls. HOWEVER, I need to point out that these 5 also use the fishing line method to ward off deer. Just encircle the garden with a single fishing line about 2 to 3 feet parallel to the ground. Deer spook when their nose hit something they can't see.
@@christinebutler8640 I have noticed with folks who are born and raised in remote areas - we live in Sumter National Forest - that we don't have access to things that hurt the environment. No traffic, no industry, no asphalt, no nothing but critters, trees and fresh air. We are also keenly aware of ground water levels to the inch. I use it lightly on my fig tree when the figs are green, like now.. Then just apply it around the perimeter of the tree as figs ripen.. Keeps deer away but not birds, squirrels, raccoons etc..
Thanks for the service video. Can this concoction be safely used on vegetable plants meant for human consumption? Is there any health issue for use on vegetables?
Good question.. And I'm not sure of the answer.. I would think the potential danger would be the uncooked egg in the mix.. Possibly just apply it to the ground around the plants and some of the foliage that is not bearing vegetables??
I am going to try this. I live on a lake in the country and the deer have completely destroyed all my Hosta plants. The amount of deer that comes around is unbelievable. How often do you have to apply it to the plants?
about once a week or immediately after rain.. not sure if you've seen it but here's part two which stresses being ready for rain: ruclips.net/video/z5yBokxMUP4/видео.html
People have asked that over the years and I don't really have an answer.. The rotten egg would be my concern.. I do use it around my fig tree but only around the perimeter not on the figs.. It seems to stop the deer but not squirrels, raccoons, possums etc..
I dont have a problem with eating my plants its the Bucks in the late fall who scrape my small trees , wont be able to tell the damage until spring, but one side of the trees the bark is scraped totally off, so I dumped a bunch of cinnamon all over the place, hope that works, have some cayenne pepper to and a couple of bottles of rosemary will try that if the cinnamon dont work
I've never used it on anything edible but given how nasty this mixture is, it may ruin the taste.. And it does wash away based on the fact that deer will eat plants that have been treated after it rains..
A few others have asked that question and I'm not sure of the answer.. All I've used it on is camellias.. Nothing edible.. Possibly a risk of salmonella from the uncooked/rotten egg??
Try having 30 plus deer coming out of 400 acres of soybeans behind your property, it's nuts in the winter. I lost many arborvitae last year to buck rub, not so much eating them. This year I planted some yew and Canadian Hemlock that I will have to fence and spray.
I can't plant arborvitae, deer eat them here. I have 200+ spruce trees I planted 5 years ago next to my soybean/corn field. For buck rub, the best results I had were to spray with liquid fence repellent and put half an Irish spring soap tied to each tree. Did that 3 years but too much work. Now I just use the liquid fence. Still lose up to 5 trees a year but just plant ~20 new bare root seedlings every year. Luckily they tend to rub only the younger trees.
I shoot for every 5 days.. After applying a batch I immediately mix a batch so that I always have some ready to go.. If it rains I apply as soon as possible after.. So far this spring I've only had a few camellias with deer damage.. They sprouted new growth that I did not notice in time to treat.. Deer did notice and new growth was gone quick.. I also treat a large fig tree with this mixture.. In past years deer have eaten leaves and green figs before they ripened.. So far this year, no damage..
A very rotten way to stop them yes rotten eggs is what is the deterrent because they are not scavengers or meat eating animals. This does work . I have also used peppermint oil spearmint oil eucalyptus oil and many other pungent oils .
Does it smell nasty for long. The plants I want to put it on run alongside my deck area where we sit out. Dont want to smell rotten eggs and milk whilst drinking a beer!
