I'm glad to see you covering mollies and other so-called "beginner's fish." I don't think they get enough love from hobbyists who are anxious to try something more exotic. I didn't know many mollies are raised overseas in brackish water -- that would explain why they so often look sickly in my local stores.

Good video - everyone says "easy to care for" and like you say, it all depends - when we lived in Portland, OR - I kept mine in brackish and they did great - I had some pushing 5" --- where I'm at now, with our well water at 8.8 pH most of time, I think I could raise them fine in fresh water - but we don't have any limestone or sandstone, so maybe I'd need a tiny bit of salt, but crushed corral would do great
Your point on raising them in freshwater from fry is also right on point --- too many people don't actually understand these fish (including pet store workers)

I caught a wild sailfin male in Houston Texas out of Brays Bayou right behind my house. I have never owned a molly before so I have been trying to get my knowledge up. I was very surprised as I found it under a culvert in a puddle completely cut off from the actual bayou in some pretty horrible conditions. With him were several pregnant females I managed to scoop up as well. He has a beautiful electric blue tail and seems to be adjusting to my tank well so far. Its been two days so I'm hoping I'm in the clear for any issues but will stay on my toes while he is in quarantine.

I was immediately drawn to my new Golden Panda Mollies, at PetCo, because they were half and half yellow and black, which is a HUGE THING for me for personal reasons. But the two are my favorite color combo in life; cars, toys, knick knacks, clothes and sports gear, etc.i have mild OCD that makes my brain REALLY REALLY want to have and collect yellow things. I think the ultimate excitement for me would be having a school of neon yellow glow fish with like a blue/black light. I believe I would pull up a chair and just be able to watch them for a while.

After having an African cichlid tank for quite a few years I decided to try my hand at livebearers. Understanding that they were not only more tolerant of hard/high ph water, but even thriving in it; it seemed a good swap. I had never had any success with mollies even surviving for very long when I was new to the hobby. But these things have gone bat**** on health and spirit. Easily surpassing the mollies in this video, these are fancy hybrids. No clue how many generations upon generations of offspring. I have to wonder if an African rift lake setup might not be the BEST for these fish. Not too brackish, not too fresh. Just right. And with a bit of good fortune even nerite snails will successfully propogate with this setup.

    • @pendlera2959

Molly x guppy hybrids are usually called muppies. From my research, the fry are almost always male and sterile. Their color and body shape are halfway between their parents'. If you do cross them, try to use colors/patterns that are known to be dominant, otherwise they probably won't show in the offspring.

I breed and raise all mine in full marine and brackish water, Sphenops, Latipinna, Velifera so on and I move them both young and adults to fresh all the time with 0 issues, and I do this with no acclimation at all (plop and drop) and their kidneys don't shut down, these fish are euryhaline and have no issue moving from one salinity to none at all, They don't adapt to only one, Only time I've ever have issues is if I keep them long term without proper minerals (Low TDS) as that causes rickets, anaemia and vitamin D deficiency from lack of potassium, calcium, magnesium and other vital TDS in the water, however low water quality when moving them to freshwater can cause major problems, and on top of that they are hypersensitive to ammonia and nitrite and if stressed can make alot of it fast, in saltwater nitrite isn't taken up by them so they are not used to it at all.

At first I was expecting the fry to be either a dalmatian/marble/white/black but they all turned out to be greyish and two were white. When they matured the males had orange lines and spots on their fins. Didn't know where that came from and either the parents never had any orange on them plus my black molly was a virgin to start with.

I can't believe I been doing it wrong this long! I have been breeding mollies for close to 40 years, I have breed Velifera in freshwater, They develop tumors after they reach sexual maturity in freshwater as well as alot of birth defects and much shorter lifespans, Latipinna don't get tumors as often but they have alot of birth defects in freshwater and males die after about 2 years in fresh but in brackish I have had males live to 6 years, Sphenops do better in brackish but it's not like Velifera or Latipinna, although they have larger litters with fewer defects in salt it's not as extreme, lifespan is shorter in fresh but I account this to them being more prone to bacterial and fungal infections and this is added stress, so in short, they just do better with salts, just regular aquarium salt reduces stress, it builds slime coat, improves gill function, reduces the uptake of nitrite, and so on... but maybe I don't know what a healthy fish is, and I guess mine aren't super duper healthy high quality mollies, Thank you for setting the record straight.

I wondered about the water because we just got 4 for my daughter. My tap water tests KH 9°, & GH around 17-18°. I am in Texas. My pH is about 8.2 which has me shocked that my Bettas & mystery snails are doing so well in it. Originally I thought my water pH was 7.6 but that's the highest my test kit would read & usually the color of the test water was darker than the 7.6 color on the card. I just got a high pH test kit in a master kit set & used it out of curiosity. I was shocked that my water tested over 8 pH in all 7 of my betta tanks. I want to lower the pH to about 7.5 but I'm not sure how to best do it considering it will go back up with each water change.

Getting some yellow mollies soon as in they are on the way. Will be my first experience with them. Gonna add them to what has been my species only black and white skirt tetra 50 gallon tank. Hoping they’ll help out with some hair algae issues this tank has been having and my daughter’s favorite color is yellow. Lol. Think they’ll be ok with the tetras? Have a new 20 gallon coming they could live in if not but curious if anyone has tried this combo.

Very informative video, I had no idea about the brackish water. Which breed do you think would be a higher demand variety to sell to fish stores?

    • @AquariumCoop

Black mollies tend to be the highest in demand. But really healthy looking mollies sell because people never see them healthy.

I keep my mollies with my clownfish baby's. They live in 1.025 saltwater, PH 8.3 and do very well. I have kept mollies in saltwater for yeas and in fact their skin looks healthier and fungus is a thing of the past.

I know that most livebearers should have part salt and some others, I would say that goldfish would benefit from a Small amount of salt in the water.

The Delusional Trump Supporter a small amount of aquarium salt would be A good idea. The only fish I think doesn't like too much salt is the Corey. But even they will tolerate be fine as long as it's a small amount.

What kind of salt should be used? Aquarium salt (sodium chloride) or a marine salt like instant ocean?

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop 8 лет назад +11

If you were going to use salt you'd want to use marine salt because it has the minerals. that being said equilibrium is probably just better.

That happened to my balloon molly and i heard that its because they are man made to have a back like that and overtime as they grow the body gets too big for there spine. Ive lost two balloon mollies from that

I would look at water temp, pH and hardness. Mollies can be sensitive to those parameters.

I'm breeding in fresh water ... I always boil new water I add to the tank... I don't need to add any salt. I'm just trying to figure out what age to start breeding the females.. The store I buy from.. They must have a local breeder. I have one momma female whose given birth to 4 sets of babies and I'd like to retire her.
