I started cycling when I was 42. I'm 63 now and I'm still enjoying my rides. My VO2max is 42. I used to make 130 km trips, but now my usual rides are between 50 and 80 km long. I live in the mountains, so my rides are full of climbs, right from the start 13-16%. 70 km trip takes me about 3 hours.
One advantage of getting older is being able to afford a nice bike. I am 66 just retired and bought my first new road bike since 2004….a BMC Roadmachine. Had it 4 months and every ride on it is still a delight :)
Great advice but me personally I eat loads of sugary stuff to fuel my rides. I live in a hilly area so I need lots of energy. I don't eat much fat at all. Thanks for the protein tip. Strava says I'm trending faster so that will do me. Weight training is next on my list. My favourite exercises when I trained were squats and deadlifts so I'm happy to integrate them into my new cycling hobby. 53 years young, and loving getting out on the bike more and more.
I'm 70! I bought a Look 765 Gravel and got a nice Campag wheelset for the road last year. I thought I wasted my money as the first few rides resulted in sore arms legs, butt etc. Anyway, I forced myself to keep with it and now I average at least 150 miles a week and go to HITT classes as well. After all of this initial suffering, I feel like a 40 year old. The kids used to fly by me on the road but much less now as I can maintain about 17-18 mph on the road. You can't beat the reaper but I want to push him as far back as I can.
I am 74 years old Suffered 3 heart attacks in 2011 and a heart by-pass op. in 2011 3 month later I had my gall bladder taken out I started riding 12 months later At the moment I average 250 km per week and do a charity ride from Townsville to Cairns( Australia) once a year ( a distance of 358 km over 3 days so far I have done 6 rides) so 40 years of age is not old just a baby
#15.. That's me. I had my time ( racer since '95 until 2012). Now I'm more like do quick club rides on weekdays and weekends, due to the pandemic we don't have that much road races. We had 2 á 3 MTB races in 2021. I'm 48 soon turning 49. I used to get mad or feeling sad just because I couldn't get home from work on time to join the club at the starting point. But now if it don't manage to get home on time, I keep my cool and ride another day. Some times I ride only one day on weekdays and another one on weekends. I do take my rests properly. I know it's a commitment but it has to be and stay something I enjoy. Thanks for sharing.
61, last year I was third scratch ( any age) first claim member in our club's evening TT series. To keep my fitness, I just go like stinko every ride and always have done. One day ride one day rest.
42, just started doing day on, day off. It seems to give you the ability to go as hard as you want at any point (provided you didn’t smash yourself on other things on the day off).
I'm 56 and I hold all the PR's on strava where I ride. I'm at 8th place out of 3200+ people attempting to ride the Alpharetta Greenway the fastest. The 7 faster than me are early 20's or younger that don't care about running over people walking the trail. I've been riding 20+ miles a day now every consecutive day for more than 3 years. 40 is still young.
I didn't start back cycling until I was 45! I'm still at it at 56 and in fact after a partial knee replacement I'm getting back to where I was when I peaked at 51! I've had my ass handed to me by 70 year olds!
Great info in this video. Thanks. Started biking about 5 years ago. I have grown to love the hills - surrounded by them here in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). Hope I’m not ruining my knees. Cheers !
As a 40 years old in a few months I noticed that the recovery time is getting longer after effort. You can improve that with right nutrition and rest but you notice it day by day. The problem is more serious if you get injured
I do Triathlons and bike 3-4 times a week in addition 3 swims and 3 runs. I put in two weight trains sessions per week, a solid diet with significant protein...at 60 I did a 4 hour 15 minute 1/2 Ironman which included a 2 hour 7 minute (26 MPH) 90km bike split followed by a 1 hour 28 half marathon (6.40/mile)...age is just a number...
Just remember if your like me, most of your colleagues at work are unfit and don’t exercise. Mention that you ride to work everyday and they think you are seriously nuts. They do the typical fad diets and always tell you how to eat better, even though they’ve been on a ‘diet’ for the last 10 years and never lost one pound. But if your like me you have maintained your healthy food eating and exercise without yo yo diets. Don’t worry too much about getting older, your probably twice as fit as everyone else in society in our current society, even against people half your age.
Hi I don't know if you can help,Im diabetic type one on insulin and most videos I have seen are cycling with type 2, what sort of food do I need to eat before and after.I don't ride as much as I use to do but I always have to think ,hows my sugar level, before during and after,Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Andy,Great video.
you can now get a device to measure your blood sugar levels in real time as per Chris Froome , just been banned for racing though , best to get input from dietician re Carbohydrate balance . Once you can measure insulin , CHO input , exercise load ( type , intensity , duration ) , blood sugar levels you can work empirically to see what works to maximise training and minimise hypos. I know in the UK Open Adventures have an interest in this issue ? forum
Hi Gary, I was confused by this statement as well. The recommended protein intake depends on many factors and ranges between 0.75 to 1 gram of protein per kilo of body weight per day. The older you are the more protein you need. Please note that, as per MyFitnessPal website, a 100 gram Sirloin Steak has 31 grams of protein.
Remember, if you are an average bloke like me who drank and led a sedentary life in their 20-30s you may find that it’s easy to be fitter over 40. At 53 I can kick the butt of my 25 year old former self in an physical activity.
Same, I am 32 and I went gray really early still fitter than many lads half my age and now I'm sat here feeling like shit knowing I only have 3 years of decent bones left😂😂😂
Thats definitely not Paulaner, its Erdinger Weisssbier Halbe glasses. Paulaner is not bad, but Erdinger is best. Erdinger Alkoholfrei is the best non alcoholic Weissbier, imho. And as usual i'm getting really thirsty and a yearning for the next Biergarten.

At 61, I can confidently say, 40 is not old.
Agreed
At 83, I can confidently say that 61 is not old
@@Jeff-bd4gg just be thankful no Centerians are on Facebook. 😂😂
At 67 I agree.
@@Jeff-bd4gg That's made me feel good at 67.

Good video! Being 51, for me all this tips are pretty much spot on!! Thanks!
40 since wednesday ! Nice video, especially the tip "life happens" 😉

I always tried to ride after I am done with everyday work after midnight, before waking up at 6 to take the kids to school and off to work again.

I'm 67 and to be honest I'm a swimmer rather than a cyclist but when I'm in the pool I can bear out absolutely what you're saying.
Many of the folk I ride with (MTB) are half my age, they're not leaving me behind - even on the seriously steep stuff.
You're not old unless you're wondering why Road.cc has a mini Bob Carolgees sitting by the wooden crates in the background...
No spit the dog though…
Well said mate, great video👌
Lighning fast shipping. Excellent product very pleased
Great video 👍
Well done - Thanks
Bloody hell age is just a number😊I still beating rides half my age at 52
Very helpful, and useful information.

Hi. The grams of protein you stated. I’m 51 90kg so 45g of protein 4x a day? Is that correct 🧐 thanks G

I'm going to turn 42 and pretty much everything they say in this video is so true.. Thanks for posting for us semi old guys

This is a good video which I will watch again and again, but why you gotta mention the big 40.😖
"complete 3-4 hours before sleep"? Someone hasn't heard of how good MTB night-riding is.
Guys trust me, you will REALLY enjoy yoga classes 😉
