I just replaced a 1999 Maytag washer and dryer. The washer started running rough about a year ago, never had issues or have it worked on. The dryer started making a loud noise about 3 weeks ago. The washer didn’t stop washing and the dryer never needed even a heating element replaced. Bought Maytag again. I doubt I will get 25 years out of them like I did the previous ones but I felt it was worth the risk. All my appliances were Maytag. Microwave has been replaced 3 times, one exploded heating water. Dishwasher worked fine for 22 years, replaced with a Kitchenaid. Stove replaced 7 years ago. Refrigerator was a side by side, it just started not cooling as well as before but never quit. I have replaced it twice, first time was 7 years ago and replaced with a Samsung, replaced 2nd time with the same model as before. None of the appliances are made like they use to be.

Wow, does that bring back memories…. My grandmother had the old washer with the ringer on the side.. You wash the load random through the ringer, Drain the water out, refilled it… Put the clothes back in it let it run… Then take the clothes out and run them through the ringer again… Then drain the rinse water…
So when my grandmother got the new Maytag, it was the Talk of the town.. Neighbors would come and visit just to see the washing machine… I still remember the amazement on their faces to see that you just put the clothes in the washer and when the washer was done, you could hang the clothes straight out on the clothesline… Back then, Maytag washers survived forever and we’re actually passed down to your kids when they moved out on their own… Those were the good old days… I’m 63 years old and I have been a forever agitator type washer person… Because they actually do clean your clothes, the best…

I love this! I had a Kenmore for 25 years and it was working well but I couldn’t get the hot water to work, so we replaced it with a new Kenmore in 2012. It was horrible. Wouldn’t fill all the way, wouldn’t spin the clothes dry, it got off balance and rocked itself almost a foot out of place. Plus it was loud and the clothes weren’t clean. The worst thing about it was it locked me out. Once the cycle started, I couldn’t get it to open. It was horrible. I complained so much, my husband bought a brand new Speed Queen, made in America, steel drum washer, considered commercial grade. It is basically just like my 25 year old washer was. I LOVE IT soooo much. I will never get rid of it!

I am an appliance repairman and I do tons of Whirlpool warranty calls on top loaders. The closest thing to that washer is the Maytag commercial toploader. They are hard to get but are around $800 and fill with plenty of water and wash like the old machines. They generally have a black, clean looking console. You'll know if it's the commerical washer if it has security torx screws holding the console together.
We only see these machines once in a great while because they hardly ever break down. The last one I serviced it was giving an F9E1 error (drain error) and it was full of water. After taking it apart I determined there was a long and very thin pin from the collar of a button up shirt stuck in the drain pumps turbine and keeping it from spinning.
This unit was nearly 5 years old and still under the 5 year commercial factory warranty so it was fully covered. Between 6-10 years you only pay for the labor and not parts if anything breaks. Any other Whirlpool product washer only gives one year factory warranty, unless you buy from Costco and they give a 2 year factory warranty.
If you buy anything else get that extended warranty! Trust me!!!

do you do tons of Whirlpool warranty calls b/c they are not that great? or is it moreso that they are very common? I'm using 20 or 21yo Whirlpool top loader ('kenmore'), had it's first issue a few weeks ago and I had to have repair guy rewire it after the lidswitch failed, but he told me that overall they're great machines, in-demand as used units (and seemingly pretty easy for repairmen to work on). It's not a commercial unit, but seems to work fine as far as we can tell.

Not really true. My grandmother had an old washer dryer set from the 70s that still functioned great until she passed. I think we only needed to replace some bearings or a heating element. I have a feeling most people trashed them not because they didn’t work but because someone died, moved or they just felt they “needed” something with a modern look. The latter being a mistake they’ll pay for ever 8 years or so. These old ones were easy to work on too. Different appliance but my parents have a new upright freezer and an old chest freezer from the late 70s still working. I’ll be curious to see which one goes first. It all came down to simplicity and robustness and these older machines had both in spades, rarely broken down and when they did it was something simple. The new ones are Rube Goldberg devices, any number of things can go wrong and it’s rarely a cheap fix.

We have become a disposable society. I am an Amateur Radio Operator and years ago when a resistor burned up you got out your trusty soldering iron and replaced it. Now everything is surface-mounted on circuit boards produced by automated machines and it's next to impossible to remove and replace something with the standard soldering equipment. So you remove an entire circuit board and throw it away. Install a new identical board consisting of new components that you didn't need.

It filled up to about two inches on the glass, like they used to do before the energy star standards were imposed. An eight-minute wash cycle followed by three rinses. Perfectly clean clothes every time. Sadly, the electro-mechanical timer started acting up and it was so old that Electrolux no longer carried replacement parts for that model. RIP.

How are machines today more efficient if you need to run them 4 times on the same load to actually get the dirt and body oils off of them or out of the fabric. And by that time the fabric is toast because the clothes don't have enough water to slosh around in and are just friction rubbing themselves apart?

My boss showed me the parts area. The Naytag was smallest, we rarely had to repair anything.
In fact we removed a Maytag dishwasher once. Our boss snatched it.
It was theory first foray into dishwashers. It had a washing machine motor, one belt (A washing machine one.) and a few switches in it.
My boss said these are basically unkillable. The washing machine motor only turned the spray arm essentially, and they used washing machine pumps
He sold it to somebody he knew, who wanted one they didn't ever have to worry about fixing.
Whirlpool had the biggest parts area, and we replaced about one in 15 we sold, they didn't last a month, and were unfixable, and Whirlpool would have us return them to them.

Ben using them the past 20 years. Everything on the washer works. The timer on the Dryer does not work, the part is NLA. We have a timer we set in the Kitchen, when it dings, time to remove the cloths.
Maybe 8 years ago we had to replace the heating element in the dryer, simple job. 4 years ago the motor finally quit, Bought a new one, took the dryer apart, cleaned everything in the vent system. was packed with lint, and a small amount of money that that fell out of pockets.
Replaced the motor, new Drum Belt, the Drum Rollers were in good shape. works great now.
Did replace the Belts on the Washer, simple process. The Water Pump is a simple set up. One belt runs the Washer, second belt turns the Water Pump. In wash mode the motor runs one direction.
It turns the Pump backwards, in the Spin/rinse mode, the Motor reverses and turns the Pump the other direction to pump the water out. very simple system.
I have another Washer that`s an Almond color, bought it off CL for $135. Looks brand new, have it as a back up. These machines are simple and reliable. No printed Circuit Boards, or electronics.
