I’ve been in this industry going on 20 years now. The one thing I do know is every giant prick know it all is eventually humbled by the brand new prick know it all as the technology shifts. It’s usually only then that they see we are all on this journey through life together and everyone comes in and peeks at different points on that journey.
One of the best things we can do is stop trying to judge ourselves based on others. Just give your best at the tings that matter most and make peace with imperfection.
All the best to you Chris. Keep up the good work sir.

Yeap... Being a so called newbie in this profession can be harsh! I remember getting slated for asking simple questions on the GameDev website, which was probably just as toxic as StackOverflow is today!
Nowadays, I just keep a low profile when it comes to these sites. The information they contain is invaluable but they are completely devoid of humanity! And luckily, they usually contain the answers that I'm looking for, thanks to some poor smuck for asking, and subsequently getting his ass grilled because the question was a duplicate!...
...Which is crime worthy of Capital Punishment... Apparently...

It's funny you said that people will judge and make fun of you pursuing your passion and to not worry about making a RUclips channel. I made the decision to document my journey as a junior developer all the way to becoming a senior and more. Even though I'm just starting out and may make mistakes or have people make fun of me, I'm still pursuing my passion. And that's a lot more than most people can say. Anyone who reads this just know, Chris is right... As long as you're morally correct and aren't hurting anyone, pursue the life out of your love and passion and put the non-believers in the rear view. Sorry Chris but that one hit home man... I appreciate you responding in the past. Keep up the hustle brother. 👍🏻

    • @BillClinton228
      @BillClinton228 4 года назад

That's what allows them to be "divas"... when they know they will get a nice fat check at the end of every month. If they tried to start their own business and see how hard it is to get clients no matter how amazing your code is, then they will be humbled.
Also those Diva devs are usually given free reign in the company to do as they wish by upper management so they know no matter what they do or say their job is safe. I worked with a lead dev who was so terrible, 5 programmers left at the same time because of him. Upper management wasnt rattled by that....

My nephew is like a genius programmer but when he started working he was having a terrible time with lots of stress, I just assumed it was because of programming problems but later on I found out it had nothing to do with that, it was the toxic colleagues and working atmosphere. He said it was full of arrogant know-it-all primadonnas that were just jerks and got jealous and mad at him for coming up with better solutions than everybody else. The pay was good but he was miserable and in the end he took a pay cut to work at a much better place where everybody was cool to each other, and even though he's not earning as much (still pretty good pay, I'd say) he's pretty happy now.

I openly say I’m brand new and that I’m learning as I go, using RUclips as a way to remain accountable and cement the concepts in my own mind. But I often worry about the abuse I’ll no doubt eventually receive for “getting it wrong” or “not being good enough”. Thank you for sharing and remaining grounded, and enjoy your well earned successes as you should.

Nice little tour of my old stomping grounds (or thereabouts). I love what you said about entrepreneurship. Having also been in the industry for 10 years myself, my biggest failure is not having been entrepreneurial for a single day of those 10 years because after I got laid off from my last job two years ago, I basically had nothing to show for it. The good news is, it only took 10 years and two layoffs for me to realize this. I’m 34, and God willing, the next 10 years will not look like the last 10! Keep posting these honest videos. These are all difficult things to juggle in our industry but if you truly have a passion for it then sky’s the limit. I’ve been at this almost 10yrs, self taught as well, and I’ve been fortunate to have a couple amazing mentors along the way. I wake up everyday thankful for the decision I made that day that led me to doing what it is we do. If I could give one piece of advice to aspiring or veteran devs it would be, “Always surround yourself with people smarter than you are if you want to grow”.

Ever since I began to code I've always had this question, Is it possible to create a program that can "create" itself? For example a human to grow need to be born first (obviously) after wich it will grow and learn and have lessons in life that will slowly change him/her, making him/her a more complex creature as time goes by. So, can someone make a program "born" and make it so it grow and edit itself, getting more and more complex as time goes by? Maybe it's a stupid question, but a genuine one that I have 🥺

Start with the basics. You can only go breath once you go depth into the basics. Learn python or Java, do a couple small projects. Then learn data structures and algorthms and implement it in the language you chose. Then, learn version control like git. Once you're at this point, it's time to to start expanding. Learn new languages. Learn some web development. Learn low level systems programming. That's how you get going. Good luck! It's not easy, and you have to love it. Cheers

“Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends, and spirit and you're keeping all of these in the air.
You will soon understand that ‘work’ is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls - family, health, friends and spirit - are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.
    How?
Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.
Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them, life is meaningless.
Don't let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live ALL the days of your life.
Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us to each other.
Don't be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly: and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going.
Don't forget, a person's greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
Don't be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.
Don't use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a Mystery and Today is a gift: that's why we call it ‘The Present’.”

I'm 33, have been in software for 7 years. I'm so fuckin burned out with working for other people. I quit my job today, and have about 5 months of runway to build my own thing. Wish me luck!

@@realchrishawkes Didn't go well, I ended up spending a lot of time just recovering. After about 3 months I decided to go back to work and I did find a much less stressful job. The first one I have found in fact. It's been great. Now I am looking at getting back to side gigs as im not exhausted after work anymore.

this was a great video, but still not sure if I got closer to learning how to get rich from programming. Loved the quote at the end though. And wow I didn't know Great Falls was one of the richest areas in the country

Thank you Chris. Yea I'm in that cycle as well. Just rest and be alive, I have to remind myself all the time ( im a entrepreneurial programmer ) If I ever break through I will give my story . receive the moments as they come. I'm right where you are talking about. That was legit.
