@@DeadlyKnot Fort Massachusetts is a great little fort on Ship Island, off the coast of Mississippi. There is a ferry that takes you to the island and the fort, leaving from Gulfport. It runs through November 1, then closes for the winter.
I was born August 20, 1961. We were raised in an area 6 miles outside of Slidell called Bayou Liberty. Between 1966 and 1968 we went to Fort Pike many times, mostly through the spring and fall seasons. Even back then it was sort of scary. I always liked going there. We would picnic and play ball and fly kites if the wind was strong enough. Great memories of listening to the hits on WTIX and WNOE. But we all know that everything must come to an end at some point. I'm soon to be 63, my sister passed away and we're all getting older. It's nice to look back and remember, but it's sometimes just as depressing. Peace.
Thanks for your historical video. My parents took me to visit Fort Pike several times in the 60s-70s. I went once again before Isaac shut it down. Sure hope Louisiana parks will restore it enough for visitors....even if on a limited basis. It is an important part of the history of the defense of NO.
Really enjoyed this. I visited Ft. Pike while at a conference in New Orleans about 20 years ago. It has really deteriorated due to hurricanes and rising sea level. One of the nice things about Ft. Pike is that it is a pure 3d System fort without the Endicaott and Taft concrete batteries that were added to many 3d system forts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, e.g. Forts St. Phillip, Jackson, Morgan, Sumter, and many others. Unfortunately I am too far away in Wyoming to participate is any restoration as a volunteer.
In the 60's hwy 90 was the road to Biloxi MS where the Big Biloxi St Park was our destination we would stop at Ft. Pike for lunch. The boy scouts were allowed to use a piece of property belonged to the power company that we camped on. A troop leader would drive us to the fort and we hiked back to camp a distance of 20 miles hiking down the side of hwy 90.
Thank you for a great video. On my one trip to New Orleans in the summer of 2005, just before Katrina, I stopped at Fort Pike. Hope they are able to restore and open to the public again one day. It is such a unique piece of history!
I love that fort. I've been there almost a dozen times over the years, and love seeing it again but its also very depressing to see the shape it is in. When I first saw your video post I got excited thinking they might have opened it again. Sadly, it was not to be. Anyway, thanks for the memory and update.
Great video, thank you for putting this together. I lived in Slidell as a youngster and really enjoyed visiting and touring Fort Pike. It's a shame that it is now closed to the public. I hope Louisiana can find the funding for renovations and reopen it to the public. Our history is precious and should always be protected for future generations.

What todays revisionism is doing is erasing the many layered culture that made New Orleans so great. When they are finished there will be no stuffed mirlitons, just chayotes .
I so wanted to take my kids there. I found out it been closed for few years now. I think right after Katrina. But We tried going last year. I loved going there when I was a kid. It is such an incredible place to see. We went a lot on the 80’s. I remember they even had uniforms on display but someone stole them at some point. So sad. I wish the folks in Baton Rouge invested more in our state parks like Mansfield State Historic Site, Winter Quarters and Mansfield Female College, Germantown, Hodges Garden and Rebel State Park.

I'll be doing in-service training for the NPS rangers at Fort Pickens one day - I'm not sure which day yet. I'll be doing four days of training but the only one specified at this point is Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island, Mississippi. That will be November 1. The other three days will be November 2, 3, 4. I just don't know which fort will be which day.
@@NOLADEEJ I can help to make that happen! It's a very interesting fort, and it has a real "bonus." In the early 20th Century an accident blew off one bastion of the fort! While tragic, it gives the visitor a cross-section of the ramparts of the fort. It really shows the way these forts were built.

@@NOLADEEJ The large openings that the cannon fired through are called embrasures, and the smaller openings for rifle/musket fire are called loopholes. That comes from an old European term for arrow slits in castles, but the name stuck throughout the Third System.
Its weird like the camera view is the view I saw visiting Fork Pike in the 70's exploring with the Scouts, and another time I visited with when it began flooding regularly, much like old Paris Road to the old pontoon bridge flooded at high tide..
I've always wanted to visit this fort! Thank you for documenting this and giving us the history on it. Is it possible to kayak up to the fort but not go inside? I wouldn't think that would be a problem I want to get a few pictures from the water if I ever get down that way again.
I discussed a broad period of time and showed whatever photos of the fort I found, never stating that photo was of that specific time. But thanks for the advice
It is a real disgrace that the state has let Fort Pike disintegrate to its current condition. I remember at one time there was a small "museum" in the citadel . Maybe one day the Federal Government will take over the Fort and restore it because Louisiana will never do it.
I'd love to see it reopen. The Louisiana State Parks would love to have it open I'm sure, they just need the funding to fix it up from all the storm damage.

In talking to the Director of Louisiana State Parks, he is more worried about the ongoing expense of keeping it staffed. One-time stabilization funding is easier to obtain than long-term staff salaries.
There are volunteers that clean it and maintain it when they’re able to. I agree though, I would be fine paying an entry fee to visit and let that money go to upkeep.

For something that's "abandoned" it sure is maintained well. The Army only decommissioned it, but it wasn't "abandoned." It's part of the Park's Department land and is maintained by them. What is this obsession with the word "abandoned" by young people these days?
It’s maintained by volunteers. It’s owned by the state parks dept but no funding for it. And yes, it’s abandoned because it’s no longer in use in any capacity.
Unfortunately this is all made up history. This is a Tartarian structure aka star fort. The Great Tartarian Empire was world wide and completely erased from our history. In old maps from 1600's you can see the plans of New Orleans which was also shaped in a star. All old maps show this Great Christian Empire world wide. Research Tartaria and what is known as the mud flood. The so called Roman structures are Tartarian structures. It had a king and its own flag. The so called native Indians are Tartarians. Genocide of the tartars took place WW. Please research this huge Great Christian Empire. Our entire history is a lie.

Im from Bayou Liberty. It's near Slidell. I remember going to fort pike in 1967. I was 6 yrs old but i remember it like it was yesterday.
I csn also remember walking around in all of those rooms that are now covered in water.
My dad took me there when I was a kid, I loved it then and love it now!
