Just a suggestion, something I'd certainly appreciate and enjoy seeing, some sort pf indicator on the prices as to whether they've gone up or down from box to box, just as simple as a ^ or v or something along those lines even.
Yeah, that would be cool. Especially if he does a box after the pro tour, like he did with oath of the gatewatch.

Hey professor. I just wanted to say thanks for putting up all the videos you do. They're really helpful for me as I started playing only recently with 2 FNMs (they were modern and I was using a deck made from 6 boosters deck so I lost horrifically, including losing turn 3 to an infect deck) and a prerelease under my belt so far with 2 Wins, a draw, and 2 losses in prerelease with a white/green human deck.
Anyway, thanks for providing entertaining/educational content on what seems to be a serious hobby of mine in the future and steering me clear of a lot of products that might not be any good for me.
This might be one of the BEST box openings I have seen! I appreciate the way you recorded and edited this. The shot is clear that I can read the cards, you highlighted the foils and rares, and gave a running total of the value of the cards during time of recording. This was worth my time watching and I hope you keep this trend! THANK YOU!

This is probably the 10th box I've seen opened I have not seen a single person break even with this set
I've gotten really lucky with my boxes. Foil of nearly everything worth anything (Thalia, Tamiyo, Liliana, Gisela, etc.) This set's value is ridiculous though, I'm sure I won't get as lucky ever again. You know the set's bad when you feel more lucky breaking even/making money on a box than packing an Expedition
Oddly enough, I have seen a lot more fat packs break even than booster boxes. I had a godly fat pack with Grim Flayer, Gisela, Emrakul, 2 Spell Quellers, Tamiyo, and an Eldritch Evolution. My whole booster box had less value (around $65 total from the booster box). From what I have seen in openings online, this seems to be a trend.

One of my favorite things to do though is to open packs after launch and look at the cards I get to see what sort of deck I could create starting with those cards, and then I usually build the deck. It's my personal favorite alternative to using someone else's deck from the internet and it leads to some fun builds.
It's actually more than a little sad that the money aspect is wrapped so tightly with MTG in many people's minds. I love cracking a booster box and just seeing what cards come out and what kind of decks I could make from those cards. It's unfortunate that MTG just isn't the kind of game that you can play like that anymore. I kind of miss the old Unlimited and Revised days. You'd buy a starter pack and a handful of boosters, trade with friends and see what you could make. Now, you just look up a deck online and order the singles with a click of the mouse.
This is how i play with my kitchen table group. we each started with a deckbuilders toolkit and bought a few extra packs. we made maybe 2-3 decks each with that and have had tons of fun. Some of us bought some singles that would go well with what we had built but no one net decks. It's really up to whether you a have a playgroup that wants to play this way or not. Now I also play competetive commander and have a "modern" deck so I do also netdeck a bit (meaning I look up synergies and cards online since i don't know ever card off the top of my head) but I love brewing and playing with a deck I made myself. I hope you can find a group that will play with you the way you want.
Well said, I started with Time Spiral and ofc the internet was a thing back then but not to this extent, the secondary market is the best/worst thing that has happened to Magic.
"oh boo hoo technology makes it easier to be good at something! FUCK MILLENIALS" yeah yeah we all head it, the thing is that the game is inherently tied to money, you open a box hoping for good cards, cards that can be used to make a good viable deck, biggest issue is though that those cards warrant a high price tag because people know that they are good cards, it's why bad cards sell for nothing and good cards sell for exorbitant amounts.
Wow, you're really reaching to be insulted. If I was trying to "fuck millennials" then I'd be fucking myself I guess. Technology does not make it easier for you to be good at MTG, it helps you copy someone else who is good at MTG. If you feel the only thing that makes you "good" at MTG is having the strongest deck for whatever meta, then I feel a little sorry for you.
Ultimately, it's lucky for you that it didn't take more than a few years for money to take over the MTG scene and it'll never be pried away because Wizards is a business and making money is what they do. As long as Wizards wants to make money by printing MTG, the MTG community will be focused on the money value of cards. So, I'll just be over here in the corner with my collection dating from January 1994 being sad about how a bunch of cardstock that I keep in a closet is worth more than some people's houses.

Hard to tell since some packs were cut off the camera but I beta ll non-flip mythics were from Lilly packs in box 1 since that's where your first mythic came from in that box.
People so focused on "going plus" in Magic these days...Jesus just quit Magic and go buy stocks if that's the whole reason you buy Magic product.
And the people that are complaining about how "cheap" the cards in EMN forget is that there are so many sets that started out cheap and gained value over time, a prime example of this being Future Sight.
EMN is not one of the gain value over time sets. The reason a lot of the sets that were considered cheap suddenly got expensive cards is new formats being introduced after the set's release (Modern and Commander being the big two).
EMN is a perfect example of what Wizards has done recently... giving people something to compare the new cards to (the older versions of Thalia, Emrakul, Bruna, Gisela, etc) shows how weak the cards are becoming. It's a major weakness of going back to old sets.
+Sole Servitor Agreed. WoTC has become extremely fearful of power creep lately. However, there are some hidden gems in Eldritch, imo.
+Soarel the Hobbit The problem with old Thalia versus new is mana cost. Basically, she's 3 mana not 2. This may not seem like much of a difference, but what you can do in that turn, especially in Eternal formats, can be game ending

What do you do with the rest of the cards you get from each booster box? I imagine a majority go into your collection or to help tune up some decks. But even still, a few booster boxes of commons, un-commons, and dollar rares are gonna stack up fast.
This set is awesome for budget players, there are a lot of strong cards and people underestimate them. Some of those rares will surely go up after the Pro Tour or some more tournaments.

I opened my first ever fat pack yesterday. I opened 2x Liliana, a Spell Queller, and a Hanweir Garrison. Not bad for a $35 fat pack, and I got the buy-a-box promo to top it off. Played pack wars with a friend; best way to crack packs, imo.
Will you ever make a "packs left" counter for these videos? Because sometimes I really want know if you are close to the end of a box without checking the timestamp
Hey Prof, next time you could maybe store the leftover profit from the first box, and so on, for the next box, so you'll eventually be able to get more than two boxes.
Hey Professor. Have you ever considered bulk selling the cards less than $2.00 so you could still sell them to hit your goal if needed?
While just two instances of it doesn't quite make it a fact, I think it is safe to say that a trend is developing about the card value in the new smaller block format (two sets per block instead of three). The first set, the larger one, seems to have much more value in it than the later, smaller one does. And this discrepancy is more than can be explained by the size of the sets themselves.
I personally think that it comes down the first set creating the new archetypes that are used for decks, while the second set seems to just plug in holes in those decks, rather than create new decks. Thus, the first set has more staples that are needed by more people, driving up their prices. Sure the second set still has a handful of bombs, but these seem to be more planeswalkers and OP cards (looking at you, Gisela!) than staples to make decks (Spell Queller seeming to be the rare exception to this, and it shows in it's price continuing to go up while most cards are slowing creeping down in value).
My conclusion: As the Prof's booster box game videos show that buying boxes just for value is unwise, you can increase your odds of coming out ahead (or just breaking even) if you get in early on the first set of a block, and don't even think of trying on the later, smaller sets anymore.
I think that was fine, considering you could TCG buylist some of the Collective whatevers and things like Splendid Reclamation at ~$0.75-$1 each and make up the last few dollars sending them all in one big package to save on the shipping.
Those last few packs were almost better than the entire previous box....
A side question: did you happen to pay attention to the wrappers that the non-flip mythics came in? I could not see the wrappers because you were going too fast but were they all in packs with the same art like that store owner was posting around earlier this week?

The thing is, I love collecting MtG cards. I play occasionally, but I love to amass hoards of cards from new sets. And as I've recently been getting into magic, all I hear is not to waste my money on boxes. I really appreciate that, but what about collectors like me? Is there a better option?
I think you should start doing these after the premium tour, Lily and Emrakul are insane in price now

BTW WOTC made the boxes in a way that all the non-flip mythic rare cards will comes out of all the packs with the same picture as the first mythic pack. So if the 1st mythic comes from Liliana pack then all will come from Liliana pack, if 1st comes out of a werewolf pack then all mythic cards comes in werewolf packs, and if the 1st mythic is in the Tamiyo picture pack then all mythic cards are in Tamiyo packs. This is to help stores open less packs to sell singles at the expense of YOU the Magic Players.*****

Looooove the $$$ sound byte. Please keep using it. Also I don't know if it's a good idea but have you considered adding a counter that shows how many booster packs are left in the box to gauge how close you are to reaching the $100 limit? Just a suggestion. Keep up the great vids.
Can I ask when you say $67.43 - is that buy price from TCG so what you will receive as I assume they could sell for more should they buy them all is that correct?

A little of both, depending on the set and the cards and what I am playing? Some get used by me, a lot get given away to friends and folks I know at the shop, and some get sold eventually.

I'm here to talk to you about your booster box addiction.
I'm also so disappointed with how these sets are designed sometimes. In this set in particular, most of the cards are just crap. Besides limited, there is literally no use for them. There is so much bulk in this set. I guess every set is somewhat like this, but I feel like this set is extremely weak. I don't even find myself really itching to have many of the cards outside of Gisela, Thalia, Spell Queller, and some of the emerge cards. This set is weaker than Oath of the Gatewatch.
I agree 100%, and I feel it is a big problem, not just with this set, but with the overall design of sets.
Isn't it meant to be effective mainly for "the perfect casual game" ? I suppose people whose aim is to play competitively will buy the bunch of cards they need and leave the others.

Wasn't like that a while ago but now most of the power, and money, lies in a few cards.
Any thoughts on how easy it is to map the good cards out of a box of Eldritch Moon? People at some local game stores are going around buying only one type of pack, opening all the expensive mythics, and then leaving the rest for everyone else.
I was thinking one of the things that would be awesome on this is a pack counter so we know how much is left in the box maybe like a life bar or something across the top

watching this makes me feel good About my box. I got insane value out of mine, most every thing I needed for a spirits deck, and a couple of planeswalkers.
My booster box had 7 mythics and a good amount of foil rare and very good standard play rares, so I was happy about my box 😁

You got every single card I am looking for in the set in the second box... Yes you only got 1 of each but that's fine because I mostly play EDH
The only cards I want more than one of from EMN are Harmless Offering and Tree of Perdition.
For EDH I need One of each of the Meld Angels. (My wife has Angel Tribal with Old Gisella as the General and has asked me to get her them)
I also wanted Docent of Perfection for my Malek deck but thankfully My Wife pulled a Foil one at Pre-release and since we're married we just pool our cards and take from one another what eachother needs. (We haven't yet run into a situation where both of us wanted to play a really expensive card as we mostly play EDH)
I've been waiting for this forever!
It would not surprise me if some of those will actually rise in value a bit after the pro tour.

Honestly as an extremely casual and low budget player I don't mind a low cost set. I miss being able to build a semi competitive decks on $5 plus change and I could probably do it if I put myself to it.

I got two eldrich boosters from the store the other day and the first three cards and the seventh card were the same. Not a big deal but never had that happen before.
Just opened a Shadows booster box and did EPIC for booster box standards..I got 2 planeswalkers Nahiri and Arlinn, Legendary Mythic creature Sigarda, and 3 other Mythics, Geralfs Masterpiece, Mindwrack Demon, and Clone Legion for a total of 6 Mythics. On top of that I got Legendary rare creature Ormendahl, as well as several top 10 standard cards like a foil Tireless Tracker, 2 Duskwatch Recruiters, a Declaration in stone and Lambolt Pacifist. Also got 9 foils 2 of which are rare (including the Tireless Tracker). This all with a bunch of other strong cards in the 1-5 dollar range. I like collecting as much as playing and Im new so I dont mind buying booster boxes to get every card I can. EDIT: went back today and they didnt have OGW booster boxes so I just bought 5 OGW and 4 EM booster packs and got a Emrakul, Nissa, Legendary creature Thalia, Legendary Bruna, Legendary Mina and Denn, and Reflector Mage. Im on a freaking roll!! So of course I had to order an OGW booster box on Amazon for 86 with free 1 day shipping, I will update progress tomorrow.
After getting back into MTG during theros block, I'm scaling back to just limited/cube and commander. This is anecdotal, but the people I play with all have been shocked at how fast standard seems to change now, and how expensive it seems to keep current. I didn't expect the change to be so dramatic, but it feels like my standard deck both went up in price, and required a major overhaul far more often as a result of the rotation change. Every set seems to have a few chase rare/mythics that you "NEED", and a bunch of filler, more so no than say in Khans block, making draft a pretty poor way to acquire cards. It just seems ridiculous to sink 50-100 bucks per rotation (more if the core of my deck is wiped out in the rotation), between singles and pre-release, when for that price I could buy the new hot board game, expansions to board games I have, or EVERY D&D expansion that comes out. I know magic has always been considered expensive, but does anyone else think the increased rotation has made it worse, or is it just my local group.
P.S. The closest LCS to play or buy singles at is a little over an hour drive, so FNM was more like a monthly event, Maybe if I were able to play in a shop more often it would feel like I was getting more value from my decks?

You're suppose to get one promo per person regardless of how many boxes you buy but your LGS might hook you up.

If box then it's obvious; if a case then you can't know as they mighta mapped 1box from it and now know the value in the entire case ie their inventory.
I think the set is great and have powerfull creatures and spells ! only my oppinion you can see everyone have a diffrent view cause everyone have diffrent deck and flavour choices personaly i love Plains and Swamp and its going cool

The two boxes you opened were kind of low value. In the 2 boxes I got, I ended up on profit but the canadian market seems quite different than the american market value wise.
I try collecting a playset of each set (started this at origins) and I usually will by 2 to 4 boxes, sell all the duplicates regardless of value to a LGS and pick up the singles I'm missing, the only time I kept buying booster boxes was origins when the boxes came to about 140$ CAD after taxes and Jace sold for 125$ CAD. Had fun doing drafts with friends while opening them, lucked out and got 1 jace / box :)
I feel like those shadows packs were just to show people how much better SOI was than EMN.

Even though your first box sucked in value, it was impressive, because you only got one duplicate rare/mythic, and you got 2 of the top 5 most expensive mythics. I opened a box and 2 fat packs and got virtually nothing, then bought 5 single packs at Walmart on a whim and got a Liliana.
Close Enough? You're getting soft Professor. That second box'll teach you to give benefit of the doubt. Love the content, you rock.

Depends. They are going to be used in standard for sure and very possibly modern. So they might be good to hold onto if you plan to play with them. If not, they are going to have good value for resell or trade, so either way: looking good. Determine what you want, then pursue that! :)

it's new in this set and there is 3 (6) meld cards. It is almost definitely just a one time cool thing cause of eldrazi + flipcards
While the overall value of the set is pretty low, I feel like that with a bunch of powerful cards(and being the second set in a block, which usually does not get opened as much as the first), I think it has a lot of potential to grow value wise especially when rotations happen.
