60 Years of Human Spaceflight: Launching The First American into Space

- Sixty years ago, on May 5, 1961, NASA astronaut Alan Shepard Jr. launched on the Freedom 7 mission, powered by a Mercury-Redstone rocket to become the first American in space. Shepard's flight lasted 15 minutes, 22 seconds. He later made it to the Moon on Apollo 14.
Наука
Not even 10 years later, on Feb. 4, 1971, Alan Shepard set foot on the Moon as the Commander of Apollo 14. Many will remember the impeccable golf swing that he displayed while on the lunar surface, Shepard struck two golf balls, driving the second, as he jokingly put it, "miles and miles and miles".

I don't know why I'm crying. This has been my dream since childhood. We are all just a tiny piece of the world.
I'm still curious what it feels to be in space. Seeing the horizon.
The beauty of earth in its entirety.
Hello 👋
I‘m obsessed with Space🌌🌌
Me to❤️👍
im more obsessed, trust me
@Gabriel me too
I was born in the early years of human spaceflight. Now, seeing commercial launches of human beings, a helicopter on Mars, and more ...
It's a glorious, joyous time to be a witness to the progress! 🚀👩🏻🚀
how old r u, cause you would be bout 60 years old if you were born when the Saturn V was launched but judging by your pfp you look like ur 40 (maybe 50), so you prob weren't born in the early years.
@@Eclipse-mk3hm I was born 5 years after Mr. Shepard's flight, 3 years before the first moon landing. My profile picture is ~ 2yrs old.

MANNED spaceflight!
TO THE INFINITY, AND BEYOND!!
amazing achievement as a humanity. We progressed to explore this world.
It's funny how you misquote in all caps
@@orlandopockets6372 and then what? because of this, nasa is brave enough to send people to space,. because of this, 12 people walked on the moon. Because of this, we are now exploring the mars. it's a small achievement but a big impact
Exactly 60 years later, a rocket named New Shepard is ready to launch normal people into space as tourists.
And it's been around 20 years of development of that Rocket, still nothing more than testing
We will always remember those who have contributed to human spaceflight. 100 years later or even 1000 years later, mankind on the Moon, Mars and other planets in the universe will give thanks to our era.
Hello 👋
Would love to see an interview of Alan Shepard how he felt what he saw. Great video.

He is dead now. After his flight there may have been a meet the press interview
I was thinking there has to be an interview out there after his flight.

Dont forget Yuri Gagarin :)

Hello 👋
Going to space is as hard as finding a nasa video with comments enabled
Lol
8 years later and we land the first man on the Moon. Now we're about to reach the 52nd anniversary of Apollo 11 with no greater achievement in manned spaceflight since then to show for it
I think the Hubble servicing missions and the two decade long mission of the ISS are pretty cool...but I can't wait to see humans on another celestial body again!
the ISS is very impressive, but spaceflight is no longer as important for the US government and funding reflects that.
Space x successfully flew and landed a fully reusable rocket SN15 from a 10km flight test on the anniversary of sending him to space and that’s something that’s never has been done before in human history

@@CausticLemons7 hello 👋
Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on this achievement! But please acknowledge that he was the second man to travel into Space. And that was a suborbital flight.
I love NASA and all things Space. But I find it a bit unfair that you barely mentioned Yuri Gagarin's flight on April 12th and made this video look like Alan Shepard (with all my infinite respect to this great Man) was the first man to travel into Space though he was only the first American who does it. Maybe I am naive but I always thought that Space is a frontier for mankind as a whole despite all dirty political games.
All astronauts, from every country, are incredibly brave. But IMHO, those who go up first in their country's rockets are the bravest of all. They should all be remembered by everyone everywhere for having equal bravery.
Thanks for this fitting memory of Alan Shepard. It would be of great interest if you could do something similar for the other countries to have sent their own rockets and people.
You'll never be better than Commander Shepard.

Hey NASA, I've wanted to be an astronaut since I was 8 years old. Do I still have a chance to go up into space? I'm only 65 in good health with a BSEE and have worked as spacecraft digital communications engineer. Seriously, I'd go into space in a heartbeat.
All the best nasa from space exploration. We are NASA
As a child, that was such a wonderful day.
Alan Shepard is my namesake, my mom named me after him when I was brought to her while the tv was showing him being recovered. Naturally, he was always my main hero, and why I was nicked named space cadet by my brothers.
It made me emotional 😌😄
It's amazing on how far we gotten over the past 63 years. It's just come to show that we are coming forth to the frontiers of space
Happy mother's day to all 🎉. Thank you for sharing.🙏

goosebumps!
Great video and a great achievement that was achieved back then. Even if you have to consider that Yuri Gagarin made a whole trip around Earth and Alan Shepard only made a small trip into space.
In the 1st grade..we watched this flight in school on a B&W TV set...
It felt like sci-fi in action.
I want to know about interdimensional spaces.
Please tell about that in next video

0:53 why does mission control show orbits even though this was a suborbital flight?
So why you didn't post something about Yuri Gagarin's spaceflight on April 12, 1961?
Russia's space program sucks, they have been orbit decaying for 60 years. Soyuz sucks it is a death trap rickety piece of garbage. NASA got the first and only men on the moon, developed the first reusable spacecraft, flew a helicopter on Mars recently. NASA is the GOAT
@@tonyb5492 That's true. I've said that NASA forget about Gagarin at International Cosmonautics Day
@@nasahistorian8639 Don't combine the Soviet and Russian space programs. Now "Roskosmos" evokes more ridicule than respect, and leaks (both air from the ISS and money from the state budget), unfortunately, do not surprise anyone. But under the USSR, the space program was really outstanding, especially during the time of Korolev
@@ChasseAuxHiboux привет, на будущее: не заморачивайся отвечать таким комментаторам, они этого даж не стоят (:
There is a fairly common and quite valid opinion that the Russian space industry, in fact, "wears out" all that remains of the legacy of the Soviet Union. At one time, the USSR was a leader in the global space industry, but with the collapse and the arrival of the 90s, when there was no time for space, now Russia has greatly lost its global position. One of the main reasons for this situation, of course, was the meager financing of the industry, and often the complete absence. Recall at least the fact that due to the inability to maintain the Mir orbital station, it had to be flooded on March 23, 2001 in the Pacific Ocean. Exactly as much as this is a sad moment in our cosmonautics history, exactly as much it is symbolic. Also in the 90s there was a large outflow of qualified personnel abroad, which, as it is not difficult to guess, aggravated the already sad state of affairs. As a result, rocket launch accidents have become more frequent. Yes, Roscosmos is a dump. All the best people at Nasa
Crazy to think that the length of this video represents 1/5 of the total flight time.
Congrats, America! Respect from Ukraine.
God I wish I was an astronaut back then, so much more curiosity.
well you should dream to be a astronaut today, we are going to Mars this Decade and we are going to have a (maybe self sustaining) Colony on the Moon
@@Eclipse-mk3hm yea everything now is cool but I prefer the 60's and 80's because there was just so much more to learn. Plus the space shuttle is beautiful, and it required a lot more effort then to make.
