  • A viola duet arrangement of "Swallowtail Jig". One viola plays the original melody transposed down by a fifth, so it fits comfortably on the viola in first position. The other viola plays a newly composed harmony part.
This arrangement is part of my collection of 40 traditional tunes for viola duet. The sheet music is available as a pdf from my website:

I also have sheet music for viola and violin duet, viola and cello duet, and solo viola.

do you have to transpose fiddle tunes for the viola? is it awkward or difficult to play them like they are? I would like to learn the viola, but play together with violin players, is there a particular difficulty in it?

Hi! I have a website which is all about this situation, and I provide sheet music for traditional repertoire that is both in "viola-friendly" keys and keys that match the ones played by violinists. It can be a little more awkward to play the melodies together with violinists (which is what gave me the idea for providing the sheet music) as you sometimes have to transpose by an octave and other times not... In this particular video I was playing a harmony part written specially for the viola, which is another approach entirely. Find out more here: www.folkviola.co.uk/
