We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives ruclips.net/user/postUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.
7 year old vid, i know...But you just utterly destroyed my apprehension and fear of planemaking. All proof of concept as long as the bed angles are right the rest is cake. Thanks!
Even the angle is not so criticle. It can vary according to what you want to do, and what timber you are dealing with, but... The sharpness of the blade edge is the most , most important thing. The rest is just a holder for it...in concept. Hope your planes turn out well.
I have been looking into getting a bunch of planes for my woodworking projects, but I have a old set of chisels and this is just one of those moments where I can't believe how quickly and easily you can just make one, I'm sure with just a bit of refinement, this idea just saved me a small fortune. thank you.
Beautiful basic solid tool to get the job done. Fancy electric tools are great when they are working! Good basic hand tools don't break down, they are always there for you. Nice share.
This is a great plane, but I also see it as a great proof of concept. It shows you the basic framework of what you need, than you can build apoun it with your own designs. I will be using this style to fashion my own plane
We're here far away from lie-nielsen and veritas wizz-banging shinny stuff, but woodworking is about getting hands dirty, and getting effectiveness... i think. So hats off. One of the greatest woodworking video and tutorial seen. Best regards ! PS. You should fire your boss.
Muy bueno, felicitaciones. Técnicas demostrada por usted motivan mucho, incluso a buscar por veces soluciones más sencillas y económicas. Cordiales saludos.
I like realizing tools with a beautiful look, let's say with a good finish.. But the same I like doing what's necessary in a short time, going just to the point, if you have a need and can't waist time. Those of yours are very good example of making what you need easily and quickly, so to be able to work in case you have not the right tools with you. It's nice when a ugly thing works well despite of its aspect! :D Well done man!
I don't know why anyone would be negative on this video. they have probably never seen old wood handplanes before. this is pretty much exactly how planes were made back in the day
+nikotwenty . Absolutely, in fact , if you do some searching around youtube you can find some better videos than mine, on how to make several different kinds of old style 'block' hand planes. People do not realize that this is basically how people used to do things, no less than a generation or two ago. It is sad how low technology has brought us in our thinking (or lack thereof).
nikotwenty I'm not going to be negative but my only thought was instead of going through all that why didn't he just use tge belt sander? He said he sharpened the chisel upsetting it, so instead of that much time building a one use tool i would have hit it with the belt sander. Still a good idea if you don't have a plane, any electric plane, or a belt sander.
Got the job done! the wedge looked good - could it be that the big nail was too shiny with a large diameter. rough up the nail or use a thinner one. Anyway...subscribed.
Great work .. I love minimalist mechanisms ..and this is one . I think sometimes we have lost the simplistic view the ancestors had and I suspect many of the old Egyptian aged buildings carry clues as to the use of very simple but effective tools .. Sure they more be as quick but with time great accuracy can be achieved
Far out man, you made it just like that. I watched several videos which it's so complicated making one hand plane that scared the day light out of me, but now l can make one easily thanks you bro. 🤟
Great to check my subscriptions box to find a video from you, always good to see! I'm 17 and have just been accepted into University for Civil Engineering, after already doing a level of it at college. On site construction really should be fun.
***** Ja, si, mi hijo esta estudiando piano clasico. La musica no era intencional. Solamente era lo que estaba tocando en el fondo en el momento. Ha, yes , my son is studying classical piano. The music was not intentional.. just what was in the background.
I just sharpen a chisel that was hanging around rusty and dull, I think I'm going to make a plane like you did just to have it around just in case. Don't do much of carpentry though. Great video.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with destroying 2 tools doing something you shouldn't have. no matter if your just starting or have 40 years experience. absolutely nothing. it happens. any who. although I probably would just drive to the store or wait till the next day if I was on the job. I will definitely be using this for home. nice job for sure.
muchas gracias por el tip, yo tambien tuve un jefe que rompia todo ja ja ja, son una verdadera molestia, pero es el jefe. Thank you so much for the tip, a few years ago i have a boss that always break things in the workshop ja ja ja ja they very annoying, but is the boss. PD, my english, i know is not so good.
I really like your idea to screw your chisel to a wedge its great so you get right up into corners but FYI your chisel still needs a lot of love from the grinder to true out its edge could use another handle if you have a tree out the back probably could cut yourself a piece of branch and whittle a new handle (dunk in oil or whiskey) for your chisel a piece of steel or copper pipe properly hack sawed for a feral and bob's your uncle it would look a million bucks again
That is precisely the point. :) You will know as a builder that most construction sites are new , so therefore relatively far from the hardware store, before such things grow after the population is established. 2/3 of the world's population is also far from a hardware store in general, so, yes get the boss to get new buzzer blades when he is able. In the case in the video I got the job done before anyone got close to the hardware store, and it was not that far away.
so I'm guessing you got paid a day rate to make one of these on site when you had an old beat up no.4 in the van.. sly.. ;) good get out of jail video though.
j4ck888 I was only employed as an unskilled laborer, for cleaning the site and doing general donkey work. Between lugging scaffolding and lumber around, I was given the job contractors and fully waged carpenters were supposed to have done, because they had failed to do their job. I did the job solo, under budget, in half the time, with materials left over, did a better job design wise than was called for, and saved them thousands of dollars....I got offered a full time job, which I turned down, and came back here. No, I didn't have a no.4 in the van. Everything I had was borrowed, including the chisel.

This was exactly what I needed and even more. Ugly, rough but incredibly functional.
The best solution ever... Application of screws was excellent work

+Slim Pickins . good to hear.
I think many times we overthink and overengineer stuff. Good to have another perspective. Thanks!
Willem Kossen I totally agree. Thanks for your comment. :)

This is the most minimalist, easiest design for making with minimum tools! i love it! this is exactly what i was looking for! thanks!!!!!

Really great! Seems obvious, but there are some tricks and tips.
Great lesson! You should make one for the foreman and tell him, wreck this and you can fix it yourself!
A very inventive solution to a problem not of your own making. I like it. :) Cheers, b.
biggles1024 Hey, Biggles ... salutations :)
Far out man, you made it just like that. I watched several videos which it's so complicated making one hand plane that scared the day light out of me, but now l can make one easily thanks you bro. 🤟
I wanted one for home use, brought blade and wood but local carpenter denied saying wood is not sufficient. Thanks for the great idea.🖒
Great to check my subscriptions box to find a video from you, always good to see!

Jabacon I wish you all the best . :)
You can use Wood Prix instructions to build it yourself guys.
Me gusto el video y la musica de fondo. amo el piano.

***** Se escucha que va a ser un grande. hermosa la musica classic. saludos desde Toronto.
A very low tech approach, nicely done. In some way I see a resemblance with Ichiban Moto 's videos.. at least in the tools used.
MORE stuff on planes & sharpening. I love it. Do five more videos like this one. Ten!
Do something with a milk crate.
espectacular, bien bueno y muchas gracias

Cool idea, thanks for sharing!
Scrap wood City You are welcome.
Nice
nice Job Guy. this is a perfect Hand Plane (y) ;)
Which drill did you use to make holes in second type of plane.
It's called an archemides drill. I got it in a second hand shop. But any drill should do.
thanks a lot.
nice idea for a quick fix :-)
Great vid
Did not expect it to work so well. :D
awesome tip from chisel to emergency planer, you deserved 5 star
Super ..... Sir...
That's so awesome. I'm gonna try to make it. Thankyou!👍😉

Great video but I laughed at the chisel, that's a beaten up chisel
Yes , I rescued it from somewhere. It has done me good service :)

Nice!
awesome stuff!
I feel like it would be faster to just go to the hardware store provided youre not in the middle of nowhere
