Just picked up a pair of 880v14s and also found the toe box a bit narrower. Ended up loosening the lower portion of the laces while keeping up the upper tighter and it worked great for me! Appreciate the in depth review!
Not everyone likes the softness of the new 1080, so I think the 880 will cater those guys. I think it would be a good replacement for those who like the 1080v12 but in a slightly lower stack and a bit lighter weight. Less hype too! Which means easily discounted soon 😊.
I am not a runner at all. But instead I use runners for walking and everyday life. I tried the rebel v3 and i found that the heel was way to “thin”/unstable for day to day errands. 1080v12 was good but worth 210+tax Canadian? 880 felt the most “normal”. Nike peg is a legend, but honestly Nike are too slim and tight for me.
Yup, I bought the 880 as my first pair of running shoes and I think that's their purpose, as once I was able to expand my workouts and bought the Triumph 20 and Rebel V3 (LOVE both of them), the 880 immediately became a walking / working shoe. They are too dead now to run, but if I had a fresh pair, it would probably be my traveling / vacation shoe. I also see a lot of senior park runners using them. They are kind of specialized in a roundabout way.
I've enjoyed my pair so far after two runs. "No frills" is a great way to describe it - its refreshing to have some ground feel! I suspect the midsole will be more flexible after 30+ miles. It is listed at 8mm drop, but I felt like it was lower (in a good way) as the heel doesn't seem to interrupt my natural running mechanics. Just a decent cushioned no BS shoe which stands out in the world of high stack rocker shoes!
Have the 880v14. Really enjoy them. Donated my Pegasus and using this instead. While I enjoy the 1080v13 for running more, imo the 880v14 is a better daily-beater / walking shoe.
I have this shoe, and it's ok. But it feels a lot thinner than it looks. I usually like those kind of shoes, but the 880v14 is just not fitting me well. Had to go up 0,5 a size to not have the toebumper hurt my toes, and I almost never go up 0,5 size.
this is such an in depth review!! thank you so much,, it's just what i was looking for when deciding whether to purchase this shoe. do you think the 880v14 fits TTS length-wise too?
I did see a video with a New Balance rep saying that the foam was a denser formulation than the 1080. It would be nice if they didn't use different foams and call them all the same name.
oh nice thank you for confirming that. and yeah i really wish they didn't do that - saucony is doing the same with the PWRRUN PB they're putting in the new triumph. it's a completely different formula than what's in the endorphin pro but same name. super confusing
Did you feel some of these models poke your arch at some level? Fordy said that Ride 17 could be one with this issue, just to aware. Rebel v3 has some poking due to the narrow midsole
I didn't have any arch poking in this guy or the rebel v3. The only shoe I've had that feeling in is the Adizero SL but once I'm running that feeling typically goes away
Thank-you. 880v12 is my DT and I don't plan to buy this in 2024 but a curious as I might buy it in 2025. What's the motivation for the 880? You're going to get 500 miles out of it and you can pick it up for $70 after one year and $40-$45 after two years if they still have your size. I need 4E width and the Fielcell line only goes up to 2E. I have a much harder time finding the 1080 on deep discount in my size.
Where does the Adizero SL fit with all these daily trainers? I feel like the firmness of the SLs hits the sweet spot after 50 miles. For me it’s the best workhorse daily trailer for me.
the current version of the adizero SL competes with all those ones i pulled out but it's a lot firmer and less forgiving than any of those other options - i liked it as well but as you probably know it's not a crowd pleaser hahah adidas introduced the supernova rise as a more comfort-oriented daily and the price of that at $140 is on par with pegasus, 880, velocity nitro 3. in SL2 adidas is putting a lot more of the lightstrike pro foam, so it seems they are positioning the SL as their fast daily (similar to rebel) and supernova rise as their mainstream/comfortable daily
@@supwellI had the SL but my flat feet felt the middle was hitting or more like my foot was not supported and I supinated heavily when running, do you think if I use the wide version this might be better? I’m a regular width but with Boston had to go wide due to pain in the arch from the rods being right below my arch
I ended ordering the Asics Gel-Cumulus 26 instead of the 880 v14. But I might get the Rebel v4 to pair it with my 1080 v13. For the same price, I found that the Gel-Cumulus is lighter, more bounce , and stable ( with a soft middlesole) and more modern. Anyways, with new colors and price drop , I might finally try my first 880 later this year.
I like running shoes like the NB 880 because I face different types of terrain in my city, pavement, concrete, dirt, sidewalks, uphill, downhill, different paces etc., and a shoe like this performs very well.
I have 2 pairs of the 880 V12 and 2 pairs of the 880V13 and what sets them apart from this "new improved" 880V14 is that the previous 2 versions had a dual layer midsole foam of freshfoamX and fuel cell, so you got great toe off for faster runs. I'm finding the V13's on sale now at joes NB outlet for only $99.99 so I will stock up on them. as for this V14.I'm going to pass
The 860v14 is the one you want - has that dual foam setup with a great rocker and smooth ride. Covered it last week a bunch on the channel - it's awesome. One of my biggest surprises so far this year
Nice review, thanks for that! I've been wearing NB 880s since version 9 or 10, usually switching off with Brooks Adrenaline, 4 x 10K runs weekly, just getting out there, nothing complicated. Both of these shoes have always been decent for straight-ahead no frills everyday runs. However, I'm disappointed in the latest NB 880v14 for some of the reasons you mention. Narrower toe box than previous models, which is strange for NB. Quite firm and rigid, which is different than most recent versions. Also more of a flared base on the front of these than past versions, giving them a wider footprint but in combination with that narrower toe box - weird, in my opinion. They also got rid of a set of eyelets in v14 or v13, which I don't like the feel of. Not sure, but seems like the 860, 880 and 1080 have all consolidated to same price point (eur 160 over here in Europe) where there used to be a price spread among them. Not sure I'd buy another pair of 880v14 due to that narrower toe box - after a few months on the road with these, I can feel it. Perhaps something changes for v15. Thanks again for your considered and detailed review!
Thanks for the kind words! I've been really impressed with the 860 - that would be the one to buy over this for most people. Also I recently started testing the new balance propel v5 which is cheaper than this in the US and has a much better ride
i wasn't blown away by the 880v14 so wouldn't recommend it. saucony ride 17 would be a good option for you - 8mm drop and uses a fun foam that's also super durable. i haven't run it yet but i ran in the saucony triumph which has the same foam and i absolutely loved that shoe. my only complaint about the triumph was the 10mm drop felt too high so the ride 17 with the 8mm drop should be in the sweet spot www.runningwarehouse.com/Saucony_Ride_17/descpage-S17RM01.html?from=supwell
I think how you speak about your first experiences with the 880 you do almost all things in the training cycle except the really fast stuff. When you compare it to the 1080 it‘s more resilient and so you can do more type of runs it than just recovery or slow miles 🫶🏻 I didn’t run in either of these both shoes. I formed my opinion about both shoes of your videos I saw recently 😍🫶🏻👍
yes it's definitely more versatile than the 1080! if i'm going to do a run with strides i probably wouldn't use the 1080 but the 880 handled that great
Atreyu base model or 880? I ran in three pairs of the Reebok floatride my first year because they were on sale for 40 bucks. Just a shoe but I loved it
I haven't tried the Atreyus yet but their daily trainer is also on sale for $55 at REI. I've heard good things and it has a super critical EVA foam which should be more forgiving than the EVA in the 880. I am not enjoying this thing so far 😩
@@supwell I’ve never brought myself to buy it on discount, instead going for other bargain buys from brands I haven’t tried . I clicked the link last month for the Atreyu but they were out of men’s size 9 :/ 55 is too good to pass up. I can’t believe you get so much mileage in all these shoes 🙌🏼 incredible
never ran in that shoe! i know andrea from doctors of running loved that shoe and now runs in the hyperion max - so if you're looking for a replacement maybe check that one out. i didn't love the hyperion max because of the heel cutout but if you're a mid to forefoot striker and want something fast and firm it's a nice option
It’s not a serious running shoe, or at least not competitive with its peers. With how many he has to test and his limited budget I think other shoes will need to come first.
Also, as you know, EVA will perform and feel different at cooler/cold temps vs warmer/hot temps. 1080 is suppose to be more “luxurious” daily trainer so expect NB to give a better version of FreshfoamX vs other lower tiered models.
great point about temperature - it was about 35/40 degrees F yesterday when i did the first run (so freezing for me but nothing for an ohioan hahaha). but still 880 felt firmer than 1080 in the same temps
@@supwell probably a old formula with freshfoamX like older 1080s v10-12 were just meh to me, it was firmer with some give, curious to try v13 since it looks more compliant and softer
I don’t like to run in soft foams. So the 880 meets my needs more than the Rebel or the 1080 as a daily trainer, I can’t stand the feeling of the foam giving away and being squishy underfoot
I know we're all hobby joggers here, but I just can't wrap my head around anyone wanting a shoe that is only a "6 of 10" in every category. Let's say you're running 25 miles a week. That's a pretty average parkrunner's weekly mileage. That's 100 miles a month and enough to wear out a part of daily trainers in 3-5 months (depending on how much life you can get out of them). Most of us watching shoetubers probably run a lot more than that. For anyone who is in hobby for longer than one pair of shoes last, there's a false economy in trying to have one pair of shoes that does it all. If you're going to wear through 2-3 pairs of shoes every year anyways, why not have a rotation where each shoe can be really good at it's job? You're not gonna be spending any more money, you're going to have better tools for the job, and there are other benefits of having a rotation (shoes last more miles if not run in everyday, lower injury risk, etc...) I get buying an "all-rounder" if you're trying to find out if you enjoy the hobby, but after that, it's time to build a rotation and leave this boring daily trainers on the shelf.
yeah i agree with this - if you're going to buy two shoes this immediately becomes obsolete hahaha but for the one shoe runner, shoes like this make sense. the example i keep thinking about is a high school cross country athlete who can only get one shoe at a time. this would be a great shoe for that. for any hobby jogger probably not 😂
