I bit the bullet and had one of my D810 Nikon body's converted to Full Spectrum for Astrophotography. Cost was about the same as buying that Astronomik H-Alpha slip in filter for the body. I can now photograph the night skies with the 14mm to 600mm lenses that I have. If I get a IR/UV filter I can also take normal images.
Kamil, would you be able to do a video explaining the process of star-alignment with image reference to combine both types of images (h-alpha and rgb) on PixInsight?
I have unmodded Nikon d750 and i was able only by using star tracker to bring out a lot of h Alpha colors without h Alpha filter. Playing with selective color in Photoshop helps a lot. Cheers
Excellent video Kamil, very usefull. I used to have this set up as you have but it was a nightmare to focus and I decided to modify my camera. The filter cost is way to high to compare to camera modification. I find a company in US and they have a sort of filters to use on modified cameras during day time shooting, also you can pick any size on a lens or front of camera sensor.

But I have been told that you if you shoot Ha at anything less than 50mm, you get bad distortion in the stars on the periphery of the frame? Is this a problem that you have had to deal with? Thanks kindly. PS I am currently using a astromodified Canon 6D. I note you're using an Canon R-- perhaps the optics are different enough from the 6D that you can get away with using the wider lenses for your MW photography?

I've watched a couple of videos by Gary Honis, who apparently was one of the gurus of astromodification, and I also have the detailed written steps he provides, but his information is from many years ago. Wondering if you have any added perspective on dos and don'ts. I have two cameras, the second of which I bought specifically so that I could astromodify one of them and not have to worry about losing normal functionality. I've been waiting for the Astronomik clear glass filter for my camera to become available again here in the US, but I'm at the point of being willing to pay the extra money it would cost to buy from a German retailer and have it shipped.
No, I have not done this myself. I’m pretty savvy with screwdrivers and tools but I didn’t wanna take any chances that I would damage something. I was more comfortable paying a guy who does this for over 20 years to do it for me and I think he mods the vast majority of cameras for astrophotographeres here in Poland. He is a polish local though so that probably won’t help you
@@kamilkp Full spectrum mod or not, getting proper color accuracy with the method you use in your video appears to be just as expensive as having the filter... Are there some glaring disadvantages to this filter that I've been missing? Props to you for your creativity in discovering that method though, it was a really interesting watch!
just paying double the price of that filter to get the camera modded saves hours of time down the road. maybe days.....until you get to the point where you want to use the filter on a modded camera anyway for even MORE h-alpha 😅
From my experience no. But if you are under a very low light polluted sky or on the southern hemisphere (where these nebulae are higher in the sky) then maybe. Also different camera manufacturers have different filters and different spectral responses so I don’t wanna say it’s absolutely impossible but it’s unlikely
To be honest it's really not worth all the trouble using the regular camera with the H Alpha filter, it's just so much easier to bite the bullet and have you camera ( astro) modified, then if you still want to use the camera during day light once in a while, you can always add the IR cutting filter instead for those rare occasion. removing lens in the middle of the shot and realigned camera with all the dust and moisture in the middle of the cold night is the last thing I want to mess around out there, a modified camera makes my life a lot easier and the shooting much more enjoyable.

Custom white balance on modded cameras does the job too! Unless you unlock full spectrum, then a UVIR filter is a must

Does stacking without tracking work? I would be tempted to get a front screw on filter to avoid the necessity of refocusing.

Sadly clip in filters aren’t supported by my 6D mk2 :( and screw on lens filters are just so awkward

You can always realign in post production

I’d keep the 80D. Cropping in with RP makes you lose a lot of resolution!

This particular one works only with full frame as far as I know. Not sure about the new R7 and R10 cameras though

What about using an OWB filter made by that same company to make your Astro modded camera usable in the daytime?

L Pro and CLS are light pollution broadband filter. Ha is narrowband that passes almost only 656.3nm of light

Ha is rejecting all the light pollution that the CLS is rejecting and much much more. No need to use anything else while using the Ha
