    Great job, Matt. I was obsessing over which plugin to use first. You made it simple! Use Sharpen AI when noise is less of an issue; use DeNoise AI when sharpness is less of an issue. There's rarely a need to use both. And, belying other tutorials I've seen, it's fine to do the Lightroom developing work first. Genius!

    Great job explaining the Lightroom workflow! By coincidence, I helped a friend download and get the DeNoise plugin to work in Lightroom just today. She wondered how to use it after we got it installed. This confirms what I showed her on how to use it. Thanks!.

    Excellent tutorial. I already use Topaz but did learn more from your video. I appreciated that you catered for looking at the images via video on smaller screens by zooming in because it's often forgotten that not everyone has a supersize high quality monitor. I wish I had seen this video before I started using Topaz, although I work to a very similar work flow. Useful to know there is not a definitive flow of using the two software programs, it's down to choice on each photo.

  • @GaryBox

    I've always done sharpening using Nik sharpener pro. These new tools probably make that redundant but I've yet to see a video that addresses my main concern. Firstly if you plan to resize an image for the web down to 1600 pixels on long edge for example would you sharpen first and then resize, or leave sharpening until final step? Secondly the Nik product uses the 3 stage sharpening method where output sharpening has options for both web and lab printing. None of these new fancy sharpeners seems to mention how the process would differ if you are sharpening an image for printing.

    Just a couple questions:
    - can you achieve the same sharpening & noise reduction results using PS's multitude of options?
    - does Giga outperform the new Enhance offering that Adobe launched recently ?
    - given the answers to the questions above, I wonder what Adobe will do about it. I do think they have recognized that simplification and time reduction are key elements to
    enhancing the use of PS. Certainly, Topaz and Luminar have.
    They do have Noise Reduction on a waitlist within the Neural filter...perhaps that is aimed at Denoise.

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski 2 года назад +1

      Hi Alan.
      1. No, you cannon achieve the same noise reduction or sharpening in Photoshop or Lightroom.
      2. I don't really know. I don't use either of them (see my answer to another upsizing question here). You can always compare them on layers yourself to see how it looks to you.
      3. I don't know what Adobe will do about it or if they see it as a threat. Adobe is great at 90% of what photographers do. I'm personally okay that other companies step in. Nobody can be all things to all people and honestly... if it's not a wildlife photo, I don't use Topaz because Adobe does what I need for my other types of photography. Thanks!

    Do the Topaz programs work better as stand alone or as a plugin with Photoshop? I'm considering installing them as stand alone so I can use them with Luminar Neo if it's any good. Wait an see on that. And, also Capture One. I suppose I could go back and forth, close out one program & go to another.

    Hi Matt. Love your videos. Very informative. Had a query. When sending images from Lightroom to Denoise does one need to open up shadows and bring down highlights before or after Denoise? What about the black point / white point? I mean should I do the dynamic range adjustments after Denoise has done it’s thing?
    Also do I need to reduce sharpening to zero before sending the image to Denoise?

    • @MattKloskowski

      Hi Patrica - if you're referring to my demo during the webcast, GPU rendering is turned on and I have mine tuned the best I can. I have a 2016 iMac and other than the final rendering, it moves pretty fast. I was also pushing a 50-60 Megapixel file through it. But overall, it always just feels longer to me when I'm live on a webinar which is why I called attention to it. Thanks!

      Hi. I totally agree. Up until now LR hasn't been native and many of the other tools I use haven't been native. So all I get are troubleshooting emails from people asking me why their software doesn't work. We're definitely getting there, but I still feel as if I'm a beta tester if I buy one :-) Trust me, I want one and I will definitely get one soon, but I just don't want the hassle that comes along with it at this point. Thanks!

    What I missed: This was a good overview but I still do not understand why Topaz has both DN and SH if both do both functions and why it is not better to do all the sharpening in one program and the noise in another with the opposite set to zero. I have been setting RAW conversion sharpening to zero to avoid sharpening three times. This could be made more clear.

    • @pauldunphy8790

      Hi Doug, this what Topaz has to say on their FAQ page about the sharpening function of DeNoise vs Sharpen.
      “What's the difference between DeNoise AI's sharpening and Sharpen AI's?
      DeNoise AI uses AI algorithms specifically made for digital noise removal. Its sharpening functionality is used primarily to smooth out any artifacts created during the process, and aren't nearly as advanced as Sharpen AI, whose AI algorithms are custom built for focusing images.”

    I'm curious about what you REALLY use for huge enlargements...ON1 Resize 2021 or GigaPixel, and not just saying GigaPixel because this is a Topaz Labs video.

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski 2 года назад +1

      Hi David. I really don't do enlargements. Just about every photo I want to print large, I have taken with a recent camera and it has plenty of megapixels. Plus, I don't typically have the room in my home to hang anything gigantic so it's just not something I do often. But when I do enlarge I typically just use Photoshop > Image Size to do it. I've done the comparisons with other tools and Image Size is plenty good enough for me. I only notice a difference if I zoom in to 400% so I just don't zoom in :-)

    When using Sharpen AI, you also left the LR default sharpening on. I don't think this is the right workflow since the classical LR sharpening is adding contour artifacts.
    Set it to zero, and use Topaz only for better results.
