When Ron was little, he accidentally broke one of his brother's toys; out of emotional anger, the brother turned Ron's tedy bear into a spider as big a Ron himself. And that is why Ron has a huge fear of spiders.
I don’t think that it was a real neighborhood at the beginning of the film, but those exist in western Europe. After World War II many new homes for millions of people had to be build and that was a way to build them fast and less expensive.
