I've owned most MPC and S-series Akai samplers over the last 38 years. If I was starting out today, I'd probably start with an MPC ONE and a well kept S-950, - powerful, rock solid sequencing and vintage crunchy tone, and for less than £1000 if lucky... love to ALL, feel no hate

Newer MPCs also have a skip back function, it’s called “retrospective record.” If you’re ever performing on the pads trying things out, before hitting record, play or stop, press shift and record and it will recall everything you just played, just an FYI. Love your vids and I’m a patron of yours. Keep creating and sharing your knowledge.
Keep getting more confirmations. SP-404 will be my next piece of gear. I have a model cycles to handle the sequencing. Seems like a combo that will handle most of my needs.
totally agree with u on almost everything. The "song mode" is really something that needs to be improved way more on kinda every sampler that exists. So difficult to make your loop(s) become a full finished beat, only using you sampler
just gotta say that the isla s2400s song mode is incredible. i never used song mode on my mpc2000xl, i would just jam beats out with the mute buttons, but with the 2400 it’s so easy to just copy/duplicate sequences and add different variations and everything.

hell yea I feel this. I went from Chopping on Audicity and Dumping into a Model Samples to a MPC One/SP404. Love the MPC ONE as my King and SP 404 as my mercenary.
MPC One has been pretty convenient after figuring a way to loop. Main page Track 01>Transpose set to 1. Program 001>Warp samples> Global tab>note on. Samples tab>pad loop on. For different drum loops, including them in the same mute group to alternate back and forth.
The biggest letdown for me with the xl is the sound monitoring while playing samples.Of course there is a work around but man,that is a important function.The other thing is it's built like a tank but it constantly needs repaired.So anyone investing in a xl you might as well get yourself some tact switches and a soldering iron.
@@mpchead yup...if the mpc2k had this feature it would be a huge difference. On the mpc4k you can go to the record window, trigger an internal sound off a pad, send that out, switch off monitor and record the return for effect treatment. Mpc60 has effect/return (labelled echo)

Isla s2400 is a hidden gem, they are always updating, always improving, they dont have the $$ behind them like Akai or Roland. Buy One and support them, they deserve it,, and it sounds great, made like a tank... perfect, with limitations, no touch screen junk..like the original that started it all.

Personally, I love the SP404a workflow, for me its super easy to sample into and create ideas without thinking too much, also ,with a little bit of patience at first, you can do a lot with the secuencer, or do it the resample method, for me its so hands on and creative. I have not owned an MPC but some friends do and it feels like you have to do a few more steps to do stuff (on the mpc1000 or 2000, don't know about the newer ones). I want to get the new 404 mk2, seems like a big improvement and would be the dopest combo with mi 404a. It's all about preference, what works better with your sound and way of doing things. The only sampler I'm interested in is the MPC live 2 purely for its mobility and its built in software which is a DAW however I have over 300 projects not finished in Reason, Abalten and MPC beats and until they are finished with I'm not buying anymore software or gear. I will finish everything or collaborate with co producers to finish everything before starting fresh and buying the Live 2.
I've had many samplers including mpc 60, 2000, 2000xl, 3000, 1000, 5000, as well as q few other samplers. Nothing though has been as amazing as the Live. I have a gemini ds 12 bit dampler and I bounce samples into it and sample into the Live. That way I get the grit and the sequencing and effects capability of the Live.
I think maybe its time you tried the Maschine? It does a lot, with sequencer, arranger/song mode, effects and chops samples quite good. Comparable with the new MPC units. It has no «soul» or signature sound tho.
@@mflugo9082 Perhaps I was unclear, and I certainly hope that my music over the years on Machine has soul in it. But my point is that you can almost instantly hear what sampler some beats are made on. The classics like the SP1200, 404 or older AKAIs. This comes down to how the machine can/processes samples, how the various effects sounds, limitations that you have to work through that gives off "flavour" to the music and so forth. I define that as "soul" and/or signature sound in a machine. In my experience, the Maschine has no clear, definable signature sound or sound in that perspective. Its a super dope sampler that I use every day tho, and super capable. Peace brother.
I use the MK3 and I'd love to see Marlow's take on it. I do feel like it has soul, it has some nice sample engines and some of the effects and VST's in there are pretty great. Arranging in Maschine is a breeze. I think it's an excellent sampler, I just don't like that it doesn't allow third party VST's
I Love My old Roland MC-808… The layout is clear and easy to use.. chopping samples is a headache, but using pre loaded chops is a breeze. 128 polyphony.. 16 channels that can be merged as audio to clear up space/give more mixer channels.. you should buy one second hand if u can. very fun 👍
I like to make my beats in ableton (boombap). I feel like a need a sampler just for effects, filters and so on, to make the sound more 90s style. I’ve been looking into buying something like an EPS16+ rack. What are your recommendations for a setup like this?

Marlow I need your advice brother… would you consider it worth the purchase to get an MPC 3000 as an MPC head if I’m happy with my workflow on the X? Do you think it really adds much stank, much crunch? I notice you use the 60 a lot for resampling and to add vibe. Is that something I should consider? It’s like I’m not sure if I just want a 3000 because I fetishize it for being Dilla’s main machine, or if the cost just doesn’t make sense when I use the X with ease and enjoy my workflow on that.
Cost doesn't make sense. If money is not an object for you then get it and have fun but if you're coming from the X and want the 3000 to improve the audio I would maybe spend that money on some analog gear, compressors or eq. I like my 60 but I prefer to make music on the X. Much simpler and easy to get ideas out. Much more options etc... Again, if money is not an object then go for it, just for fun, I would hope for it to be the deadly weapon that you need.

@@saintrumi Make sure the machine really works. I bought an mpc3000 and mpc60 and both worked for a time. They became a nightmare to repair. The screen and the drives go first.. You have to realize that people will sell these things because they don't want to repair them. Also you can't trust the repair shops. Most will steal your parts. I had one repair guy call me and told me that my drive does not work. How come when I have been using my drive all along. I immediately flipped on him. I spent $600 to buy a brand new screen and do a repair job then he calls and tells me that my disk drive does not work. I need to take a course in electronics because I have a lot of old gear that I need to repair myself.

In my opinion, the following should be considered before buying a sampler: What music do I want to make (genre), do I really only want to sample or also control midi devices. B. use an Mpc 2500se because it has a rock solid midi timing which e.g. with the new Mpc X and Live it is very bad compared to the old Mpc (60, 60mk2, 3000,2000, 2000xl, 500, 1000, 2500) is. Do I want glass clear sound and record the sample as it comes from the source (from Mpc 500, since everything is digital) or do you want 12 bit sound (Emu Sp 12, Emu Sp 1200, Akai Mpc 60, 60mk2) to e.g. B. Making Lo Fi Beats. How much money do I have and am ready to invest. Greetings from Germany
Akai MPC 2000XL has a chop function called zone in the Edit page you can change the bit rate 8-12-16 bit/ quality of sample low middle high as well from mono to stereo or in reverse bought mines for $300. with upgrade already installed such as bigger Flash Rom/32 mb of ram/ Zip drive installed and software 1.14 from 1.00 version in great condition it is a beast Also got the Akai MPC 1000 FOR $200 with the JJOSXL 3.60 VERSION/NEW SCREEN /HARD DRIVE/MEMORY MAXED OUT 128MB ALREADY INSTALLED IN MINT CONDITION. BOUGHT A SP1200 REISSUED OUT OF A PAWN SHOP WORKING CONDITION FOR $800. I LOVE DEAL LIKE THIS
My 2000xl, like my previous 2000, is missing that power button. A few of the number keys, particularly #2, are stuck. I've figured out how to work around them but plan on getting it fixed. Still think the original 2000 sounded a tad cleaner than the 2000xl. Thx for sharing as my next step is working work the 8 individual outs soon.
I don’t know how handy you consider yourself, but I’m sure that that button on your blue XL is fixable. There’s GOT to be videos out there on how to complete the task, and, as someone who has a lot of experience working with electronics, I will say to you-someone who might not have any experience-trust me: with patience and a slow pace, replacing that button is something you could do yourself. Don’t worry-your XL is not done.
@@mpchead Yo! It's either the button or the switch beneath it. I have replaced multiple on both an 1000 and 2000. The 1000 was the first time i ever soldered something onto a PCB. It's no doubt so easy that everyone can do it, after 10-20 minutes of YT tutorials. It's also quite cheap! The switch can be found on multiple websites, and are actually pretty cheap.
@@mpchead it's either the plastic button or the tact switch, it's easy to change the tact switch its solder braid and soldering iron to desolder it, I've done it on all my MPCs, if your not comfortable you must be able to find someone who can handle it a lot cheaper than buying another XL and wasting this one on parts. Its way more likely its just the plastic button that snapped if it's gone in, see the link I posted above they have a habit of snapping when they get old and brittle. its possible it snapped because the tact switch is on the way out and you've been pressing harder, but you would be able to judge that better than me speculating .
This is the reality of old gear that nobody tells guys who are new to this. I have an MPC 4K with tact switches that are failing. To replace these, I either have to disassemble the MPC and desolder them all and solder in new ones, or I can pay a hefty sum to send it off to one of a handful of places which will repair gear like this. I can watch tutorials on soldering, but I've never done it, so if I'm going to do it myself, it means the very real possibility of screwing up the board. There are no good options. I've already had to replace the display and the hard drive. When I originally replaced it the first time, the previous owner stripped one of the screws, so I had to buy a dremel rotary tool to cut out the screw. The 4K has been sitting on the shelf for the last year because I can't be bothered with it, since repairing it myself is easily a whole day gone, so I'm just making stuff in the box with some cheap and disposable midi controllers. If I were to buy my first MPC today, I'd definitely buy one of the newer machines.
Paid JJOS is what really makes those machines shine. I just got a MPC One last week and I was surprised that there's a few JJOS features I use a lot that aren't in the One! It seems at first glance like the new MPCs have every feature anyone could dream of, but the perfectly curated and streamlined workflow of JJOS is great for just taking care of business quick and easy
I use the X as my main sampler and sequencer. I am thinking of getting EMU E4XT Ultra as it has a hard drive and awesome filters. Also the Akai CD3000xl or S3000XL but only if it has those emulator installed or scsisd. I can't stand diskettes. Do I need it? No .
Im technologically challenged; Worse than grandpa tryna operate an iphone. I use an MPK to program my drums, but I'm tired of using a DAW to chop & arrange my samples...so I'm hoping to upgrade to an MPC that's somewhat user friendly & easy to navigate.

Not much of a difference today. Modern MPC's are like a DAW in a box. It's mainly down to personal preference. A DAW can do everything a MPC can do, but a MPC can't do everything a DAW can. If you're used to working with a DAW, you'll probably find a MPC limiting. If you're use to the MPC, you might find a DAW overwhelming. There's no wrong choice though.
@@mpchead Arranging in Maschine is incredible too. It takes a bit to get used to, but after that you're flying, I would love to see you do a video on the MK3 because I feel like you're more transparent about the flaws of these samplers than most youtubers are!

That MPC should be easy enough to repair. I've done similar repairs in the past without issues. There's probably vids on how to do it on here too

Analog rytm is super intuitive and fun to create on, a bit limites with polyphony but great nonetheless.
This MPC x is shhhhhhit it.. had for 24hrs before it crashed fresh out the box.. I went straight back to my MPC XL 30 years still done it the best 👌

just got a circuit rhythm recently and the chopping is really fun on that. mono samples only tho. Also has a cool note repeat on the input signal too.

What do you mean it has no sound. That maschine punches with soul. Plus it depends on the person behind the machine. That and they're XP tambien.

Its way more likely its just the plastic button that snapped if it's gone in, see the link I posted above they have a habit of snapping when they get old and brittle. its possible it snapped because the tact switch is on the way out and you've been pressing harder, but you would be able to judge that better than me speculating .
This is the reality of old gear that nobody tells guys who are new to this. I have an MPC 4K with tact switches that are failing. To replace these, I either have to disassemble the MPC and desolder them all and solder in new ones, or I can pay a hefty sum to send it off to one of a handful of places which will repair gear like this. I can watch tutorials on soldering, but I've never done it, so if I'm going to do it myself, it means the very real possibility of screwing up the board. There are no good options. I've already had to replace the display and the hard drive. When I originally replaced it the first time, the previous owner stripped one of the screws, so I had to buy a dremel rotary tool to cut out the screw. The 4K has been sitting on the shelf for the last year because I can't be bothered with it, since repairing it myself is easily a whole day gone, so I'm just making stuff in the box with some cheap and disposable midi controllers. If I were to buy my first MPC today, I'd definitely buy one of the newer machines.
Yeah, I have two mpcs in similar state, just sitting around waiting for repair.
That button is soooo easy to fix. New switch button. And if not that just solder a new tact switch and your done. No need for a new MP!

Should be easy fix 2000xl I’ve changed buttons and the sensors behind the buttons as well as the slider, might have to break out the soldering iron.
I never soldered anything, it's not me doing that for sure probably would solder my fingers first, not good at that at all.
Yo If you’re looking into getting a new MPC try a 1000 or 2500! The song mode is intuitive especially with JJOS. 🥂
I had a 2500 about 10 ago, really good but I think I wanna stick to the XL for now.
Paid JJOS is what really makes those machines shine. I just got a MPC One last week and I was surprised that there's a few JJOS features I use a lot that aren't in the One! It seems at first glance like the new MPCs have every feature anyone could dream of, but the perfectly curated and streamlined workflow of JJOS is great for just taking care of business quick and easy

the s2400, sounds so good. Its like an instrument. I also have the MPC x and an OPZ. I can tell you im most pleased with the S2400...
I use the X as my main sampler and sequencer. I am thinking of getting EMU E4XT Ultra as it has a hard drive and awesome filters. Also the Akai CD3000xl or S3000XL but only if it has those emulator installed or scsisd. I can't stand diskettes. Do I need it? No .

Im technologically challenged; Worse than grandpa tryna operate an iphone. I use an MPK to program my drums, but I'm tired of using a DAW to chop & arrange my samples...so I'm hoping to upgrade to an MPC that's somewhat user friendly & easy to navigate.
Mashine is a carbon copy of the mpc if you take the label off they are 95% the same I dont know why ppl think mashine is a car and mpc is a boat

Any Daw works, I use Logic but Ableton can be a great choice too.

Not much of a difference today. Modern MPC's are like a DAW in a box. It's mainly down to personal preference. A DAW can do everything a MPC can do, but a MPC can't do everything a DAW can. If you're used to working with a DAW, you'll probably find a MPC limiting. If you're use to the MPC, you might find a DAW overwhelming. There's no wrong choice though.
