    So, you could even use stencils & templates to build structures from the sand to make from rivers to hills
    And even foundation markings
    To rebuild historical & geographical locations
    Sandcastle building contest techniques could be used to solidify and hold that structure if wanted - though water

    Do you have to have a projector that is mounted 40 inches away with the Konnect? Can the Konnect and projector be at two different distances? I have two projectors available at my school, because of their throw ratios one would have to be mounted 58" above and the other (ultra short throw) would be about 4".

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  Год назад

      The connect will work at further distances so your projector that has a throw of 58” should work.
      I tried to keep it as compact as possible with the short throw but it is not mandatory.

    • @BealsScience

      40 inches from sand line to lens. But, this projector has a lens focal length that can be adjusted so the amount of sand won’t be a majorly issue. You can adjust as needed.

      As far as I am aware, it is not able to do that. But, you can alter the colors of the water and topography. I do an activity with my students to show changing sea levels due to ice melt. We build the topography of areas near the coast (Manhattan, NY, for example), then raise the water level to see how cities will be affected.

    And what about the cpu? Thanks!

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  6 лет назад +1

      We built a custom machine but stuck with the recommended Core i7 (i5 should be good too) and have 3.5 GHz. We are using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 but the rest of it is mostly stripped down. We are running at the higher end and you can get away with a lesser graphics card with some limitations. The graphics card and the pc are, of course, going to determine how quickly the image can render on the sand. There is even a delay with our setup (as you can see in the video) but it is bearable. If you get to 'low' on computer specs and graphics card you will not be able to run the water either as it takes a fair amount of processing for the water. So, if you are just building one for fun at GTX 960 (or slightly lower) may work just fine (although I haven't tried to use this card, but other people have with fair success).

      @FrankConforti 6 лет назад

      iSam Ramirez, the water simulation model Dr. Kreylos developed is GPU intensive which rules out the use of a Raspberry Pi. It requires a moderately powerful gaming video card (we use an Nvidia GTX 960 and are about to upgrade to a 1080ti). The reason for this is the incredibly accurate simulation of the physics of flowing water. Dr. Kreylos said in an interview that he could have done something less realistic but it would not have the same impact as his final product. And, I totally agree!

    Have you considered adding a designated shelf for the PC?

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 лет назад

      +BJ Elkins I definitely need to do that. I just can't make up my mind about where to put it. Any suggestions?

    • @TheBjinkins
      @TheBjinkins 7 лет назад +1

      I suppose it would have to be central to keep the weight balanced. If you added a floor above your bottom braces, that might work.

    • @TheBjinkins
      @TheBjinkins 7 лет назад +1

      Also, that's a lot of weight for just a plywood box. Do you see any buckling or warping on the bottom? I'm thinking about making one with 2x8s with a plywood bottom and 2x4 supports and cross braces.

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 лет назад +1

      That would actually work quite well. I could just run another piece of plywood across the lower braces and keep the PC tucked underneath. One of the issues I am having now is a lot of sand 'dust' getting into the tower. Having it underneath might alleviate some of that. Thanks for the tip.

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 лет назад +1

      I haven't seen any buckling. That 3/4 inch decking plywood is pretty sturdy stuff and, based on my calculations with weight distribution, it should hold it OK. But, I will keep an eye out and make a change in the description of the video if I see any issues/buckling.

    "we are using 250 pounds". Is that information ok?

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  6 лет назад

      That will work (as long as you have the side rails and structure to support it). I am using about 150 pounds now (because we haul our sand to different schools in buckets) and I replace lost sand (from m kids playing) with the other sand I have.
