Hi gents, loved the pod as usual. At time of listening Ben you hadn't watched Civil War. I have a different view of the film than Jack. For me the seemingly vague placement of America in time and place within the film is intentional and helps provide a sense of immediacy that the journalists we're travelling with experience too. It's essentially a road movie, and develops in a series of incidents against the backdrop of this civil war; and the lack of explanation or clear dividing lines is kind of the point I think. The futility of the situation is felt most keenly in one particular scene where a rifleman is shooting at a sniper. When questioned why he's shooting, he simply says 'because he's shooting at us'. Definitely worth a watch, and a great cinema film (the soundtrack is awesome too - features two songs by Suicide that sound awesome in surround sound). While I'm here - couldn't find an email addy for you, wanted to let you know that for your next review (Human Traffic) that I have a load of tidbits from the genesis of the film, the actual shoot and the director. I was friends with Justin Kerrigan back in the late 90s (I was good friends with his girlfriend at the time), and spent time on set during filming. I even have a physical copy of the original script. The 'spliff politics' scene features 'me' (well, it isn't me in it - but the character 'Herbie' is based on me and an event that actually happened at an afterhours party). Let me know if you would like any background insider info - I can send you my whatsapp/email if you can share an email address for the pod. Cheers lads. Be well

People just don’t want to use their brains 🧠 to think and analyze… they want everything to be digested in a tic Toc video … no critical thinking whatsoever… a very manipulative generation… that’s why they don’t even analyze what the candidates say and do today … they all want to just be sheep 🐑‼️

@MrKrill614 cmon like the president was obviously Donald Trump. The poeple in the gas station was the Boogaloo Boyz. I wish, it more on the political side. Right or left. Playing it safe didn't do the movie any favors

@@gizroc isnt that how reporters are suppose to be? It was to be from there point of view and was their to report the situation. As to Donald Trump really didnt get that vibe from the limited screen time the president got. But if you dont appreciate the art of good movies and favor propaganda bs then this wasent for you

@MrKrill614 The problem with the movie is that they wanted you to make you feel sympathetic to reporters. The problem is that half the country believes and don't trust reporters. But the movie fight scene I did enjoy.

i agree - i feel like it was trying to make a story there, but they fell short. I think the over reaching message is war is bad for both sides. But they didn't really show that. Instead, the western forces are basically blitzing their way toward DC.
I wish they had explored more about the factions - why were those guys in the first fire fight in Hawaiian shirts? obviously they didn't just get caught in the crossfire - they were combat veterans of some sort. Are the hawaiian shirts their uniform? same with the snipers and the ghilli suits - they have colorful hair and nails, what side are they on? are they a faction? or just some random militia fighting another militia? They HINT at attrocities, but don't say who's doing it. The most tense scene is with the breaking bad guy. They never explain why the people were killed and are being buried in a mass grave. they're def out of regs - so what side are tehy on? the DC loyalists seem to be the ones in uniform, but why would they be wearing the stupid glasses? they mention factions but dono't go into any detail.
I think the best way they could have ended the movie and acutlaly shown growth is to have dunst instead of becoming a blubbering mess at the end, fail to knock the kid out of the way. and instead of getting the money shot at the president, stops to take the kid's picture instead. that's showing that she is putting the "war journalist" thing to rest and growing as if to say, war is stupid - i'm not going to cover it anymore.
any of the fighting segments is generic war footage. I will say the sound is pretty good - haven't heard gunfire that clean and loud in a while. it's jarring and not muted as most movies would have you believe. There is a story there...but i feel like it missed the mark by not fleshing out the world enough. forgettable and generic.
