When Nebula told Drax he was Drax the Destroyer, but he was also Drax the Dad. That hit me, because if you go back to the first movie at the end, when he sits next to Rocket, having just lost Groot and is crying, Drax comforts him by petting him. Yeah, he's treating him like an animal, but he's showing him compassion and understanding, even if Drax doesn't understand what he's doing or why he's doing it, but it's a call back to his character in the comics who, when reborn as the Destroyer, he loses his memories, but there's something paternal in him that shines through. Yeah, pain in the ass, but he's always there to protect the others, even at the risk of his own life.

As I have collected my thoughts with this movie I've come to realize that cohesively the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy might be the most well thought out set of films in the MCU. From beginning to end it felt like we knew their journey, their backgrounds and how each conflict shaped their way of acting. I don't imagine we will see any of these characters pop up again unless it's for the next Avengers films (taking out the fact that some actors aren't returning) but looking back on it I thought they ended it well regardless of the few issues I had with it.

  • @davidtwinn7519
    @davidtwinn7519 Год назад +3

As far as the guardians going forward, i think they were veryyyy intentional with that new guardians team. Having Rocket and Groot be the leading and returning characters work in the very long term cause its just voice acting. So you can bring in Bradley and Vin for a couple hours and get, lets say a full season of lines for maybe a future Guardians streaming show. and then the characters you put around them, another voice actor with cosmo, a young kid no one knows, Will Poulter you are only just now bringing in on a long term deal and he's very new so you can still easily have him for the next decade min. And Sean Gunn isn't exactly a busy actor and probably loves playing the role and would love a bigger role. I also think having Star Lord on earth was very intentional because like, who's leading this current iteration of the Avengers? Like you and winston mentioned the other day, we are thin on All Stars. You won't have RDJ, Evans, Hemsworth, Scar Jo, Renner or Chadwick. It's hard to have Holland lead your team long term when you don't have full control of his character. Doc Strange went on a whatever side journey so who knows when that comes back. Who knows whats up with Wanda. Sam Wilson is still pretty fresh to be the leading man on the next Avengers poster. Same with Shang-Chi. So you're left with Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo & Chris Pratt. And Chris Pratt as Star Lord is probably the biggest known star out of the lot of them. It was a big time financial move to have him on earth now and keep him around.

I second pretty much all of what you guy said here. This is the best MCU movie I've seen in a while. If I had one little nitpick, I wish we had gotten a scene or two that showed how Rocket and Groot met. I feel like that's a pretty important event for us to see, but that's only a minor issue. Also, I agree with Winston that Quill will probably become an Avenger and that Rocket's new team might join in at some point to help battle a threat of some kind in the future. I'd also love to see a movie or a series with Rocket's team or one with Stallone's character's team. The door seems open for a lot of possibilities. I'm glad everyone lived. Killing any of them off would've been too sad and simply too obvious. Considering what each of these characters have been through in their lives, they all deserve a happy ending. I know we'll see Quill again and that we won't see Gamora and Drax again, but I hope we'll see the rest of them again in some capacity.

For the record early out of the cocoon Adam was immature directly after his creation in the comics. He IS a child. Most people are so obsessed with and only know THE Adam Warlock, keeper of the Soul stone, he didn’t start there, he was developed over time in the comics too. Honestly in comics fully formed Adam is a bit boring, especially his Infinity Watch stuff. For me his best stuff is with the Guardians and this tracked for me as a comic reader.

It's so stupid but it's great.

  • @jameswrhymer

30:51 On Winston's Adam Warlock take. I get that his comic portrayal may be more serious, but think about it. If they throw him into the guardians as that skilled and serious version of himself he has nowhere to grow. The goal is always to tell more stories. By the end of this film he's part of a new/young guardians of the galaxy group, and that group has one thing in common; they're all inexperienced in their roles. Even rocket will be new to the role of leader, so the whole team has so much room to grow and experience things. If Adam was who he is in the comics, he wouldn't be able to be in that group without the next writers always having to disable him somehow to explain why he isn't just saving the day every time. I think he'll get there, and watching that journey is way more fun then him already being that guy on day 1 😄

For years I have never understood everyone’s preoccupation with death in these films, as if it’s the only way to elicit dramatic tension? From trailer one I never truly thought anyone was going to die BECAUSE the trailer led with it. Gunn is a master manipulator in the best way, if death was truly going to be a giant part of this they never would’ve teased it. I’ve always said theres so many other ways to wring emotion and drama than death.

    • @jaustill237

For me, the trailer set me up to think there would be a big death, and it's funny how wrong I was. I saw Quill being carried by Nebula as a hint at his death and then Rocket with the Zune as proof that either SL had died or become incapacitated at the climax with Rocket needing to take over as leader. And yet, those scenes all happen in the first 10 minutes.

Never have I ever been so fascinated and amazed by a villain in a film. These time I ever felt this was Killmonger in the 1st black panther movie played by Michael B Jordan and kind of Wen wu in shang chi. Ronan was cool but there was no connection The way Chukwudi plays the High evolutionary definitely reminded me of Jonathan Majors, but I have a feeling this is what the director of Quantumania, wanted us to see in Kang, not exactly but similar like in terms of personality but far from it,like a knowledgeable, quiet smart, grace, elegant intelligent man who was obsessed with recreating something and cleansing everything, feeling like he was chosen. Whilst watching the movie, there was a scene where he was surrounded by lots of people as if he was the messiah, like JC, which made me believe that he could be a televangalist.
I love how the GotG films started and ended with a villain, who are similar. 1st one = a religious zealot who is obsessed with cleansing (whipping out) a race and the 3rd one = a geneticist who believes in creating a much better race, like Red Skull, about evolution. Knowledge, someone who is Also bring displeased with how and the way humans look and are behaving. I would love to hear your thoughts on that?
I was hoping that you 3 was going to discuss and compare the high evolutionary and kang the conqueror, how they are similar, in how they conduct themselves. I had an interesting rabbir hole on RUclips and the intenret on how these 2 actors got into their characters, who they were influenced by. I feel like James Gunn reminds me of Taika Watiti and a tiny bit of Edgar Wright in terms of directing and humour respectively, and Quentin Tarantino in terms of visual style feel. Volume 3 had a similar vibe, aesthetic and energy to the first film of the franchise which I loved. Serious but with enough jokes to balance the often times dark and very dark depressing moments. But They don't feel like they overbalanced in my opinion.
Likewise with Zack Snyder, Taika Watiti and Ryan Coogler, should Gunn or all 4 of them do a masterclass or some lecture/seminar on filmmakng. Without hesitation, i would sign up and join, listening.
Thanks for your review guys. Absolutely loved it.

I think one thing that's been missing in phase 4 movies/TV shows is the feeling of "heroism". Guardians 3 made these characters feel so heroic like how MCU phase 1 characters felt. These are superheroes, they are supposed to feel larger than life doing impossible things which gives you a feeling of "hope". But I think in phase 4, many characters just didn't feel that way in how they were written. This is one reason why I think Superman is in good hands. James Gunn gets that feeling. Superman is going to feel larger than life and someone who will give you hope when you watch him on the screen. He's going to be a badass doing things that are just unimaginable. I think there's a lot of that in MCU phase 1-3. Iron Man & Captain America both capture that feeling really well. And I think this is part of the magic. Hopefully Marvel can get it back moving forward.

It would be hilarious and a good surprise. And we can find out that him and nebula actually are in a relationship. Backstory, he wanted to go hang with Quill but nebula is hell bent on him being on kno where to raise the kids. He sneaks away on a ship but she knows. If the Holiday special counts as an appearance, Chris Pratt has 2 films still left, most likely Secret Wars being one of them. GOTG vol 3 does make me hopeful about having a more balanced tone for Superman, but if there's any character that Gunn seems like he'd use a vessel for his usual humor, I think it'd definitely be Lois. Jimmy may also fit that tone too. Hoping they play Clark as a sort of a Straight Man to their humor tho (if he does go that route).

I know it's a kids movie, but maybe the one thing that bugged me about "Super Mario Bros." was the needle drops throughout. I always hate when pre-existing songs are used in movies, JUST to have them in there. What I've always loved about "Guardians" is that the music has an actual story/character purpose, as they're part of Quill's catalogue of music that he's collected from his mom and others over the years. When "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" dropped for the massive "Kingsman"-style fight at the end, with ALL the Guardians are finally together, and fighting collectively as a team... I was like, "Fuck yeah." Loved this movie, for real. I stiiiiill think the first "Guardians" is my favorite of the trilogy, but this is right there knocking at the door. Hell, maybe it'll overtake it someday depending on how I feel. But this was a great entry to the "Guardians" storyline, and the MCU overall. The chemistry amongst the team is first and foremost when it comes to these movies, and this delivered on that, with a few changes; including Gamora being an alternate version, Nebula being an actual active member of the team and supplanting her sister as the kinda mother-figure, Mantis being a more vocal presence, and Rocket being less of a hothead, and more just weary. It all came together so well in the end. I really will miss seeing *this* iteration of the Guardians together.

They mentioned in the movie that Adam Warlock was a child. He hasn’t developed mentally yet. He seemed more together in that end credit scene, but I don’t think he’s ever going to be like his comic book counterpart, so for me, this is an interpretation of the character, not a carbon copy of the character. I’m fine with that. Let’s see how they develop the character.

He may be best to lead the avengers. We love him, feel for him, and love Chris Pratt. There isn’t any other actor or character that has the gravitas as starlod and that’s only because of how good James Gunn directed these movies

Rocket seeing his friends, whether it was in Heaven (which all animals except Dolphins go to), or his synapses rapidly firing, that was what emotionally damaged me. Rocket's friends initially dying was also sad, but props to Chukwudi Iwuji, because I bypassed the saddness at that moment, and just felt hatred for the High Evolutionary. That was the first Marvel villain I've ever felt that way for. The other ones are like sympathetic, semi-interesting, or super bland. The last time I hated a villain this much, was Jason Issac's character in The Patriot.

Definitely the most rewatchable of the post end game movies.
My biggest gripe was this. In vol2 quil looses his God mode that saved his live in volume one in space when giving Gamora his mask.
So what does he go as a person who fights aliens and bad guys IN SPACE, leaves his mask and rocket boots somewhere else, and should have died in space.

Many of the reasons I didn't like GOTG 2 much were redeemed by 3. I didn't like The Sovereign in 2 because they had no back story and seened to have no purpose other than shoe-horning Adam Warlock into the story, and I didn't like Rocket stealing the batteries for no reason, again it felt like a pointless act to get Warlock to chase them. But in context it makes sense now. The Sovereign were creations of The High Evolutionary and Rocket hates them and their attitude to genetic superiority hence stealing from them.

First movie is still the best. Loved the humor in the first volume - the most balanced and natural, but volume 2 & 3 were too forced. Adam Warlock and High Evolutionary did not work for me. But overall, I still enjoy the movie, and I do like the battle sequences and how things were wrapped up if this is the last time we see some of them.

Adam Warlock makes perfect sense when you consider who his mom is. That entire civilization (the gold people) are childish. So, Adam Warlock reflects them. Vision is Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Ultron, and Jarvis. He has wisdom built in. Warlock is from a group of people who are devoid of wisdom.
