Raphael Sky is a genuinely nice and sweet guy and after hearing his story. we all felt sad for what he went through… a freak accident and an unfortunate turn of events, which made him a celebrity! The Citroen Ami is a safe car but its not designed to go fast on tight turns and the young driver learned a lesson here - youth and skill can’t save you when you lose control! We have to be cautious and always be prudent with due care for the lives of others and for ourselves. This was a very interesting story and everyone learned from it including the wonderful folks at Citroen who have given everyone joy with such a unique and quirky vehicle that’s found a place in our hearts!
Absolutely and we await police report to see what speed they think he was doing.
In what way is it safe?
I don't use any of the Social Media Websites other than RUclips. Your Episode was the first I knew about any Ami Crash. It looked Horrendous. Thank you and the Passanger for sharing his experience.
you guys really know how to fuse the tension. well, nobody seriously hurt, lessons learned. and for the airbag and total safety demanders: its a moped kind of thing. compare it with a scooter accident happening right there with the driver underestimating the curve in the road. i would prefer sitting inside the ami
Yup I see countless teenagers round here with broken legs and arms from scooter accidents
Always use a seatbelt, even it just is 20 km/h or 10 km/h, if you want to know why, lean a bit forward and run forward face first into a wall, that is just 7 km/h :-D
Yup! Isn’t it bizarre ni seatbelt required in Monaco?!
Looking at the size and weight of the passenger it make sense that on the turn as the weight transferred his weight aided the instability.
Yup I think that could have played a part too but it’s a very tricky bend.
@@MeandMonAmi yes indeed, it would not have happened without the speed, hairpin bend and inexperienced driver, ie going too fast in the first place and no attempt to steer into the roll etc… Kudos for getting the interview. 👍
@@MeandMonAmi Same thing happened in the infamous 5th gear episode where they put a 300pound presenter in the passenger seat, a small driver and then went full speed into a left turn. Surprise.
@@chrisspain I think they hit a kerb didn’t they? And they didn’t roll but it always made me conscious of it
@@MeandMonAmi True, they did not roll but that test was stupid anyway. They had a race bike win by a few seconds and deducted points, not mentioning that you can put 2 people in the AMI (and a dog), stay dry in the rain (a real concern in Britain) and that you minimize the risk of a heard attack by not racing a bike, costing the same then the AMI.
Big thanks to Rafael for being a good sport and sharing the story. Seeing this I was reminded of the Fifth Gear Episode from last year with a track test of the AMI and they were up on two wheels in a hairpin: ruclips.net/video/_gEjTTnu50E/видео.html . The AMI of course has a short wheelbase and narrow track so it's like an American Jeep CJ and many SUVs that can roll over as low as 10mph ruclips.net/video/YxFtU6BE_aY/видео.html . Looking at Rafael's crash and the one on Fifth Gear, it's essential that an AMI driver understand the cornering limits and as in any vehicle be mentally prepared and ready to counter steer into the roll rather than freeze on the wheel to avoid a rollover as Rafael points out at 15:00. Perhaps a driving/Rollover simulator might be helpful without tempting fate in real life. ruclips.net/video/E8ryNZWCmh4/видео.html
As rollover prevention systems are complex and expensive I wonder if Citroen will try to add something like that to the AMI? For the time being it seems a molded foam headliner pad might be a popular item and also keeping the seat belts tight as comfortable as in aircraft and race cars a smart precaution, as BMW points out ruclips.net/video/JFseZsnOq1Q/видео.html
Interesting Jack. Yes I saw the Fifth gear thing way back and I’ve always been aware of cornering safely but.. padding could be a good idea
What a great guy. Nice interview. Laughed a lot. Also glad he's OK.
Yes he was a very good sport and very lucky
More and more like Top Gear every episode. I fully endorse this editorial stance.
I can never tell when you are being serious;!
A few months ago, I almost died on my son’s push along scooter. All ok now but I dong blame the scooter or the corner, or the Abruzzen mountain road I was riding down. Just a case of too fast, too sharp a bend and human error.
Yup!
merci for this great piece of reporting! M&MA is doing better than MSM ;) Glad M. Sky is not badly hurt and I wish him a prompt recovery!
Merci!
Fun fact the Reliant Robins roll over reputation started in the 60s with the Reliant Regal often being owned by very young people with cheap motorcycle licenses just like the Ami. The cars were stable but some drivers genuinely lacked common sense. They would throw the 3 wheelers off curbs in sharp turns and roundabouts at a concerning speed. Every Reliant rollover could've been easily avoided by the incompetent drivers. This is the same thing again.
How interesting and I’m sure you are right
@@MeandMonAmi Thanks mate.
Except RUclips a few Norwegian medias also got this...great video and lets hope this ends well for everyone involved.
Police report tomorrow
Glad he's alright, and hopefully he has now realised how monumentally daft not wearing a seat belt is!
I Hope so
The Ami is so small he probably would’ve smacked his head either way.
It was big news on almost all social media and nice that we now got some background information. Well done guys!
Thanks Henk
What a scoop! All week my TikTok feed has been full of all kinds of Citroën Amis 😀
Thanks it took a fair bit of work to set it up but I wanted to hear what the passenger had to say
you did well ....
well, this was the first time I saw that video, and was wild and scary, so glad nothing went worst than some stitches and bruises.
take so much care when driving Tim, I know Elton drives slow but anyway accidents can happen at any speed.
Yup it’s made me even more a grandad driver!
Now that we know the passenger, it is reasonable to conclude that the Citroen Ami's rollover is due to the substantial difference in weight between the passenger and the driver.
I think it may have impacted but the careless driving and cornering at high speed didn’t help
I did not know about this accident. I’m glad that everybody’s OK. The car does look higher than it is wide. I’m surprised with all the traffic and curvy roads in Monaco that you don’t have to wear a seatbelt. I really enjoyed the conversation! It was interesting hearing about the incident. Tim, please promise us that you will take all hairpin curves very very slowly from now on. I think I can speak for all, when I say we would be devastated if you or Mr. boo were hurt. Love from Vermont
I do and I will Rebekah. It’s made me super conscious
Your escapades have kept me engaged and amused and informed for a long time. Great to have them to look forward to.
Thanks Robert. That’s great to know
Great video, he was a lucky man not to have come off worse in the accident, drive slowly Tim
Thanks Bobby!
Now you see: Never get into a car with a stranger! Thank goodness you have Mr Boo to keep you in check 😊By the way, I never knew you could get 'bend' in a Citroën Ami😂😂😂
Indeed!!
Hi lads from Spain. That was a telling tale, so take care on those bends.
We will!!
Thank you for sharing and E-NJOY your E-MOTION, Have a safe ride no matter how many wheels carry you (I am riding Electric Unicycle myself)
What a crazy story, great video, only Mr. Boo looked really uncomfortable in the passenger seat this time 😂
Tell me about it
Stand-Up Comedian Maz Jobrani:
"My son says I should make a 10-minute RUclips video out of my 1-hour stage program. And then a 1-minute Instagram video out of that and then a 5-seconds TikTok video out of that.
Me: "But 5 seconds is just enough for `Good evening!´. He: `Yeah, that´s enough anyway.´"
Wow. Very very lucky!!! Just the slightly move could have been tragic. Glad he is ok!!!
Indeed
The noise of the crash is awful. So glad Rafael’s injuries were not life changing. Thank goodness he had his seatbelt on. Very lucky no spectators were involved.
Indeed the bollards saved them. And he was very lucky
What a great sport, getting interviewed by our roving reporters, merci!
He was!
'No. Never.' Absolutely hilarious, Mr Boo! 😂🤣😂
Don’t encourage him!;
Really interesting episode, Tim. Great interview with the poor man who stepped into a near tragedy. Any chance of an interview with the tree man of Alcatraz in an upcoming vlog?
I’m working on it but he’s very BUSY!
Who would have thought that would happen ... pleased he's alright.... it's funny, but it isn't if you know what I mean 😂😮😢... 🙏 reminds me of what happened back in the 70s with Reliant Robin's 🙃
Yes I have vague recollection of newspaper stories along those lines
LUCKY EXTREMELY LUCKY.......... THE DRIVE STREETS OF MONACO... 7M VIEWS .. NOW YOUR A STAR..
Thanks for this video and collaboration !
Any time! And thanks for doing the interview
When I saw that crash video elsewhere I immediately thought of you two since you'd been round the course. Glad it wasn't, but doing this video with the lovely Raphael was a great idea. Fifth Gear also nearly rolled their Ami test car on a tight corner at less than 28 mph so there's obviously a limit to be aware of. Don't want you doing a Princess Grace.
Indeed. Definitely want to avoid doing a Grace!
Yet another example of the things we do when we're young and silly
Yup!
He's a stocky bloke I wonder whether the kid driving was a small lad? The combination of a reverse camber, sharp bend, inappropriate speed and uneven weight distribution.
Yes I think it all contributed
Get some pipe foam insulation ty-rapped to those exposed roof bars. That was the first thing I thought of when I first saw the AMI a few months back.
Yes prob good idea
Saw your world exclusive, here are some more Citroen Ami mishaps!
ruclips.net/user/shortsQWI7lLG5lzw
With the low center of mass and four wheels, it must be pretty difficult to turn it over.
Low centre of mass? It has a massive glass roof while the body is thin steel and plastic.
@@mrjed6912 And the battery and the motor close to the ground...
@@uweinhamburgyeah brings nothing if the wheelbase is too short in the length and wide
The resultant damage from such a low-ish speed accident was quite shocking to see. That he could have been paralysed as a result is also sobering. I guess the lesson to be acknowledged here; is that the Ami is not a vehicle you should hoon around in.
yup!
Back in be 1989 I bought a new 2CV Dolly to replace my 1968 moggy. As a sensible 21 year old I decided to see if you could indeed roll a 2CV. Answer yes brown trouser event!
Yikes. I’m cornering even more slowly!
Good to see that the passenger was ok - just! Although the car had a large passenger, the corner was sharp, the road might have had negative camber and they were going much too fast, the car should have understeered (gone straight on) and then hopefully stopped or hit something at a relatively slow speed. That is how any modern car should behave. It seems odd to say this but the car needs thinner front tyres so it has less grip.
Yes everyone alive thankfully
Trop lourd du haut du corps , peut être de la cervelle , ou des biceps ! ? 😂
He's a very lucky man . He could easily have ended up with life changing injuries after that accident.
Oh yes
Going to Nice in May. Can I rent a Citroen Ami, while we are there? Your content is always entertaining, the best. Lots of love from Florida!
Thanks Lily. Sadly no rental ones here. I will have to start Elton tours!;
For such a light vehicle, weight distribution is important. Raphael appears to be considerably heavier than the driver, which contributed to the rollover. The road may also be sloped incorrectly.
Yeah that car is very dangerous better drive my old moped car from 2005 has the best driving abilitys of all microcars of the world. Why ? It has the widest and longest wheelbase...
Seen a few test drives of people turning corners but doing full speed and going on 2 wheels in them.
I’m doing my research between this and a twizy..
We’ve done 10k it’s only an issue if you make it one if say
Wow…that was a different post 😳and quite a coup getting that interview. What a nice lad, good to know his injuries weren’t serious.
A pretty drastic way to get famous though Tim.
Yes I shan’t be emulating it!
Yes ! It is an advent to crach a car , been in one myself. Lucky to be alive...and I HAVE SEATBELT ON !! But it was NOT in a Citroen AMI and defentley not in 25 km , it was in 110 km. So drive carefully and be belted...and recharged!
Indeed
The fact is that the car is a death trap. Thanks for the dashing explainer😃
Every Car is a death trap. Even walking can be deadly if a car hits you.
The AMI is not a car. Nor is the Microlino, the Twizy, or a P50. A 16year old (in France you can drive it as a 14year old) would have crashed this quadcycle, a car or indeed a push bike at that speed. As the guy said, even experienced F1 drivers reach max 50km/h.
And thats in hyper stable wide cars. And if you stick 300pounds on the passenger side and then turn left, ANY car would get into problems.
Also, nobody died, not even seriously injured. Falling of a bike (the alternative to the AMY) without any protection could have been dire.
I don’t think that I think it’s a quad with all the baggage that brings
I wish I could be so humored by the crash as everyone else. One can get long term effects from head and neck injuries, paralysis being just one. I would guess Raphael is heavier than his sixteen year old driver. Going around a right curve, his weight would have perhaps shifted the center of gravity towards the inside of the curve, but going around a leftward curve shifted the gravity to the right and immediately toppled the car. I wonder if there will now be hysteria over Citroen Amis like there was over the Mercedes A-Class cars when they first came out. The SMART car also rolled over during test drives and had to get modified before production.
I think Raphael knows how lucky he was
Sir…..I believe it may be time for us to have another race. It is now one year to the week since the “slags” (your words) and I raced our machines to the jewel of the hotels of the riviera. I will supply the horse power if you supply the wit and battery power….and we can race the circuit at monaco and see how fast we can actually get round! I can see the fear in the eyes of Mr Boo from here! I hope you were gentle with Lauren at dinner tonight btw. Sorry to have missed you both. Big kiss from the last working person left in Yorkshire!,
I will gently decline that race!; We were gentle!
Looks a fairly unique set of circumstances, but I should imagine the Ami designers are very interested in this accident. Presumably wondering if a slightly wider wheelbase might help. But perhaps a timely reminder about the limits of such vehicles, and I hope nice guy Raphael recovers quickly.
Maybe the children driving these should have to have a set of stabilisers on them. 😃
Lol
VIVE LA FRANCE
Wow, that incident happened quickly! Luckily no serious injury or worse. Next video......"Citroen recalls the Ami". Something similar happened with the first Mercedes A Class where it rolled over during a 'moose test'. Significant changes had to be made to the suspension to make them safe. 🚙
I think you would need more incidents like this for that to happen Andrew. It is a unique bend/case I think
@@MeandMonAmi I'm sure your right. Have a great week guys 🙂
I hadn't seen/heard about this crash, how awful. The poor passenger his injuries were bad enough but obviously as he said could have been so much worse. Hope he recovers well 🤞. Wear your seat belts and no hairpin bends for you & Mr Boo. Stick to your ruelles étroites far less hazardous ...!
Indeed Vanessa!
It is obvious, he went round the bend too fast for the centre of gravity of the Ami. Vicki Butler Henderson nearly turned an Ami over going too fast on a corner on a circuit on fifth gear as well.
I think that is so in all probability
right about the insurance; like the companies making them didn't work that issue enough, however, there will be innovators and start-ups to repair or salvage EV's as they learn how to do it, most likely. Oddly, Tesla decided to start sealing their batteries making them unrepairable - but cutting production costs. When the Eurozone regulators find that out they'll go nuts...more - the cyclists on the Cote d'Azur are always on the edge of tire breakaway, but in the Ami you can't body english your way through those jams. As Raphael says, steer wide when you lose adhesion, never add steering lock (angle)...head cuts bleed like crazy, but stop quickly, I'll stop there. God Save the Ami.
Yes it’s a shame but I think no insurance!
Fun video and great interview. I would love to go see that track, I can't find it on Google Maps, the website it quite old. Any address of google map link would be appreciated.. thanks
It’s on a corner of the road down from La turbie to Monaco. Not the main road the direct one that you take if you are heading towards tête du chien
If I had a Citroen Ami I would go through the hairpin in Monaco at 10-15 kph just to be safe.
Very wise
When this Monaco crash video came out, you guys were coincidently going to Monaco....
We live here
I’d be interested to know your thoughts - do you think it’s appropriate to let 16yr olds loose in these? I know the ‘without licence’ is part of the French tradition - mainly I believe historically to help out rural Farmers etc who needed Road going transport but without the expense of a ‘normal’ vehicle. But do you think the age limit should be at least 18 so the driver is at least an ‘adult’ for legal purposes?
what good does it do to plaster everything with rules and regulations, when you might get nuked tomorrow. let the people enjoy their life. only germans overregulate everything
Well I can tell you that I have been riding motorcycles since I was 16 years old and never had a problem. Considering motorcycles are really more dangerous than this kind of “cars” I think it’s not a bad idea. I think about how happy my parents would have been if 32 years ago when I was 16 years old I could drive an Ami instead of a dangerous motorcycle.
I think you’d have to have access to some stats to know whether the incidence of accidents is greater. But I do see a lot of 16 year olds driving these responsibly and equally see a lot of 14 to 16 year olds driving scooters crazily…
ITS NOT A SPORTS CAR !!!!! Upper case intended .😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Indeed!
Anyone remember the Mercedes A-class couple decades ago?
The journalist driving tipped over too
No I shall look it up!
Yep, and then they sorted it.
How lucky was he !
Yup
Lucky escape, that vehicle looked badly damaged after a slow roll. It was however driver error. Did the driver have his seatbelt on ?
That I don’t know but given he was French I imagine he did
Hi Tim, I received an email from PayPal that you had send me a message 'through my PayPal account'! However, somehow there is no new message to be found(?)! Can you please tell me thru this medium, what you wanted to tell me? I probably do something wrong, but I am no-good in things like IT! 🙃

@@MeandMonAmi You're welcome! Are all the messages concerning your health still positive? Send our best to your partner as well! With kind regards: Richard and Bas
Thanks for the interview. Something I didn't quite understand. When you ask him if the driver had put the gearbox on Neutral, he answers Yes. But afterwoods he says that they were driving at 25-30KM/H... in order to protect the poor young driver who will have to face the law authorities. I've been driving the AMI many times and confirm it's possible to drive 50 or 70 downhill when you put on neutral. Then, it's not only a question of speed, but also the absence of motorbrake to stabilize the car. When I see the images, I have the feeling it was above 45. And I don't hear motorbrake on the recording inside the AMI (which normally makes a lot of noice). What do you think?
I don’t think to be fair he understood my question about neutral but I have no way of verifying the speed so it’s possible. The police report is out tomorrow I think
Thank you for your quick answer and for your videos. Great job!
The other possibility and that awaits the report of the police and engineer inspection, is whether the car was modified to go faster than the allowed speed. Such modification could result in a catastrophe like that shown in the TikTok video! We’ll see what the results of the accident investigation show.
You're right! It could be one of the reasons
@@NormanF62 That would have dire consequences. The insurance would be invalid and the driver can forget about getting a license for a long time. Also there will be a huge fine to be paid of, probably over years.
There is software allowing the car to reach 90kph, they showed it off in Las Vegas, nothing has to be changed on the mechanic. Range goes down to 30mi and you can forget about curbs or indeed breaks. To get the thing to that speed legal, you need to reinforce the breaks, shocks, Tires and frame. Getting it to easy 15000 Euros. Renault did that with the Twizy, you had a 45kph Version and a 90kph Version. Just Software. But it was nearly 19000 Euros.
Citroen should be bringing back the tried and true 2CV suspension.
There's no reason not to cause it'll be a boon for attention and sales, comfort, simplicity and safety.
Glad Rafaels OK. He seems a lovely guy. Was the 16yr old illegally driving? Seems incredulous.
No not illegally in the sense of too young but he was found guilty of dangerous driving
I can truly sympathize. I have two Children 23 and 18. I am scared every time I travel with them. They have modern cars with airbags. Can't say the police will be that Ami with them.🤣
We believe we are invincible at that age…
