Lex, the timestamping is SO useful. Thanks for being one of the folks who does this. I love the conversation about the place violence has in humanity. It DOES occur that you often bring subjects back to some overarching goal of "Love" or "Love as the main thing". Without doing more to really articulate and elaborate on this sentiment it comes across, for me, as well intentioned and naive. Anything you can do to flesh that out further and in a more crisp or concise way is helpful.

Interesting how so many great people from all walks of life have been influenced by thinkers like Jung and Nietzsche and by philosophy in general

    • @user-ol5bj4dm2v
      @user-ol5bj4dm2v 3 года назад +8

A requisite is that their writings are coherent and pleasing to the ego of the readers. And I mean that in a nonnegative and neutral way (i.e. I'm not saying that most people will only follow a philosopher that flatters them, because most are not narcissistic and/or stupid).
What I'm saying is - who's going to follow a thinker whose conclusions don't lead to better emotional outcomes for themselves? Nietzsche, Wittgenstein (especially), Camus, and Schopenhauer resonate with my own thinking because while they reject implicit purpose to pursuit and the absurd materialism that belies our motivation ("man can do what he wills but cannot will what he wills"), they offer their own solutions to nihilism. Camus most notably championed the absurd and Nietzsche said "fuck it" and live life like a champion if you so desire, without fear. Schopenhauer and Wittgenstein were more depressing and dismissive of meaning. But their rational arguments (Wittgenstein on language, Schopenhauer on will) are appealing to me.
In essence, I'm saying that there's a NICHE (ha, get it?) in the minds of people to be configured by elaborate arguments on existence and purpose. And these thinkers happened to do that. And that's what I think.

@@user-ol5bj4dm2v wouldn’t the mark of a good philosopher be positive emotional outcomes for the vast majority of the people they influence? It isn’t particularly useful if it doesn’t improve your life in some way. It’s also even less useful if it only applies to a specific type of person. Let’s say I came to some conclusions that were useful for a schizophrenic structured mind. It wouldn’t make it very far because it would only be understood and useful for a small subset of a broad population. It’s wonderful that the philosophers you like appeal to you but it isn’t particularly useful if you are quite different than most people on the planet. It also kind of bolsters the claim that there is some kind of “collective unconscious” from which the vast majority is influenced by.

I feel such an intrinsic connection to Josh's thoughts on violence and human nature. I've never had a desire to be a bully or to hurt someone that didn't accept the risk but there's a lust for violence that I think many people have that is separate from evil. Something that I didn't understand growing up and I wish I had Josh to look to for guidance as a kid. I thought my desire for battle and evil was one in the same and I grew up shunning that side of myself for fear of becoming a monster. I even joined the Army in the hope of gaining an outlet for some of those cravings. When I couldn't get on a deployment despite trying to go, I took it as a sign that I should bottle my base nature and move on. This has helped me realize that maybe I shouldn't be ashamed of how I feel and maybe join a Jiu Jitsu gym or something to have a positive outlet instead of always having that nagging voice in the back of my head. Thank you Lex, for all the great conversations.

When I was 13 we used to be taken out most weekends doing army training with an ex SAS guy. I was very nervy kid -full and anxiety and OCD. The reason I mention this is Mr Barnett reminds me of him. We were all from council houses and he talked to us about a huge amount of subjects none of which we really knew about or even had the background to understand. Combine this with a huge amount of physical work and I think it fair to say he saved us all that went with him. People like this are ultra important to young men-more now than ever.

Great guest! Lex caught me off guard with this one. 😄
Josh is such an interesting and curious cat. I followed him since the early Pride days. And his knowledge of general culture and history is vast, with emphasis on combat culture and all the nuances that follow and surround it's progress throughout the human history.
Plus, he has a good sense for humor and empathy, which are prerequisites for a good human being. /imho 🤝👊

The look on lexs face when Barnet slowly but surely smashes his idealistic, “love, kindness and empathy way of life.” I take a very pragmatic, very realistic approach to life. Stay out of my way, don’t use aggression/violence and neither will I. If you do. I will be more violent and strive to eliminate you. This is why I’m remote a remote worker. And removed from most of humanity. Makes my life easier.

Lex, your guest list is simply the best. I would love for you to interview Svetlana Alexievich. You would probably have to do the whole podcast in Russian (but I think we all would read our way through just fine) as I don't think she speaks English. Her books on life in the USSR and the experiences of hundreds of people across those decades are truly gripping to read.

Josh Barnett is a very wise man. I'm a former mma fan so not really into mma at the moment so I was pleasantly surprised the topics were so stimulating. Enjoyed his perspective and ideas.

I honestly am sitting here trying to think of one. I’ve watched Rogan since Redban. Seen Josh many times.... but this is an expanded version of him either he’s never expanded on or someone hasn’t brought out. Either way, it’s definitely Top 3 Podcasts I’ve watched in a while.

  • @AmericanArgonaut

Holy shit this is a good podcast! I’ve watched Josh on Rogan many times. I’m not sure they ever had a conversation quite like this.... this is one of the most thought provoking /balancing things I’ve watched in a while. Well done gentlemen. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

Yeah I don’t think Rogan has the depth of thought to carry a conversation like this. Not knocking him, as his skills lie in other areas.

I came in kinda Judgy of this guy thinking to myself: a fighter what does he know, only to be instantaneously introduced to a top bloke who understands that ideas can be misconstrued, such as the Ubermnenschen, and the guy just carries on with such insight.
