People, my sincere apologies for this rushed video, where I mispronounced the actor's names. I wanted to have it up before the weekend and spread the word about this film, as my video people were going to be on leave -- but that is no excuse, as even my script said "Sajayan". Apologies again.
Sir the review was brilliant and you pointed out some really good points one might actually miss while watching this film. Being a Malayali the mispronunciation sort of stood out and wanted to point it out so others can actually check her other films online. A great gesture from you to come out and correct it. Much respect
You missed the portion she asking for foreplay And how his reaction was !
"Spread the word about this film" ❤️
Hi Baradwaj, I actually didnt understand the criticism u made on the director's view on gender . If its abt the women whom u can see sitting with placards, thats Sabarimala issue happened in Kerala... Which many ladies themself opposed and so the director was showing the contradiction of how women are not seriously seeing the injustice happening to them
@@humanhuman9299 I don’t think BR was criticizing the director’s views. He just said the scenes where the wider issue was depicted weren’t as smoothly delivered as the scenes centered around the heroine. For example, the scene where thugs set an activist’s bike on fire came from nowhere and went nowhere. Nothing to do with whether the issue is valid; it’s just the point of view character suddenly shifts just for a while, which didn’t fit the rest of the movie which was very clearly focused on the heroine’s POV.
As a man I felt so guilty after watching the movie, I woke up early the next day to help mom in kitchen today.
Hope you keep this enthusiasm daily and continue to help her! Am happy that you acknowledged it!
Hope is people like u

Interesting fact the director of the movie is also done scriptwrite
he was great in writting sitcoms in kerala
and his first 3 movies..were he kinda failed to adjust with movies...
the best thing he did here was cut the time down..not made it like 2.30+ movie
This will be the first movie in which the director intentionally try to make audience bored....what a brilliance🙌
Nope... We can feel it in 'Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum' too

Disagree, every industry has their fair share of good films, the problem is you're not watching them
@Justin J This is what I am exactly trying to say here, nobody is forcing ‘these shit shit soft porn Bollywood movies’ on you it's up to you whether to watch it or not and ‘being a Malayalee’ by myself I would like to emphasise on that we used to be the hub of your ‘so-called soft porn movies’ at one point of time So I request you to go through his movie recommendations and find how many of those movies you have watched so far by then hopefully you may understand what I exactly meant in my last comment.

When I saw this movie, the very old maxim which says that " financial dependency is the root cause of gender inequality in our society " was reinforced !!! Actually the parents should be more worried about their daughter getting a decent job, than getting a husband for their daughter with a decent salary. If nimisha had a job in that movie, she wouldn't have endured so much in that family. She would've made a space for herself in that family very much earlier. But the biggest irony is that still I have seen many ladies including my mother who are financially independent, but still easily dominated by men like my father. So it's not just financial dependency, but emotional dependency, sexual dependency, intellectual dependency and many more dependencies. So, the real mental conditioning should happen from the women's side, and they should be aware that they should be independent in all ways. The real essence of the philosophy of feminism want to achieve that emanicipation of women in all the spheres of a human life, and then only the most beautiful dream of gender equality will bear fruit. Hope my fellow mothers and sisters can clap for themselves soon like nimisha did in the climax scene out of sheer respect they have for themselves for not succumbing to the whims, and fancies of this society, and carving a path for themselves, and saying out loud to this unequal world that they are no less, and their dreams aren't either. Wish for a next generation of girls, and women who views equality as something as precious as their life breath. 🤞
Are you serious? Many girls have to leave their jobs and career at some point in their lives. They still have to do the household chores even if they are working outside.
We should raise boys to become sensitive and kind people. That's what the issue is. They don't care about things that doesn't affect them. They really love their mother's but won't be seen helping her in household, what's the logic behind it! We should make everyone self sufficient to earn as well as cook and become totally independent. If intellect, finance etc is important then being able to cook , clean, wash is important as well, being a good human being is important too.
Good insights.
You are totally wrong. In India if a woman works outside, she still have to wake up early and cook and pack lunch for all before getting to work. that is only more work. that angle is not covered in this film. in Chennai I have many friends who work in executive positions, but wake up 4 am finish cooking and keep food for in-laws on table and leave for work. and salary has to be handed over to mother-inlaw and she has to ask for allowances for herself.
@@balasubramaniannatarajan2845 well put. I definitely do not believe working girl means financial independence either. I studied engineering, worked in IT for past 16 years.. in usa... still if I want to send 100$ for my dads birthday it has to be "discussed" first at home. I insist on "discussions" when hubby has to send money for nephew for getting a bike (this is not 100$) .. but my discussions does not allow for dissent - it is a "sham" discussion.. my 100$ raises questions like why does your retired father need so much money? he is not asking you are unnecessarily complicating by giving money.. so NO there is no financial independence because you work..
My mother who has not worked single day in her life handled money at home from the day I remember. dad did not even know how much came to his bank. the respect my mother has in our home is un parallel to my situation. like you I learnt my lesson and decided to stop working and enjoy my day with yoga and meeting friends and reading in the afternoons and being home when my kid comes home. we have our mother son time and he gets his fav rice and sambaar hot . I am happier now. so this onus on working women needs to be re assessed in my opinion.
Americans - my white friends - both work. both share all responsibilities.. there is value for the time and efforts of both partners.. until we raise our boys to treat women as their equals, kitchen is definitely not the only area of distress for nimishas..
Horrible review. B Rangan's inherent patriarchal mindset crept out when he said "she is not a hipster jeans wearing woman". So what if she were a hipster? You don't think hipsters do household chores? How pathetic!
Rangan kept repeating that issues mounted when the workload increased. No, not just because of that, sir, but beacuse she was stripped of her rights and self respect! She was mocked for pointing out a bad habit of her husband, she was shamed for mentioning foreplay, she was shut away during her periods. Nothing ever disturbed the three square meals of the husband and father: she was easily replaced; first by a help, then by an aunt and then by another wife. There are more levels to this film, sir. You shouldn't have done a review just for the sake of it!
Completely agree, this was a very superficial review.
Awsome.. yes u r rt

Director is brilliant for giving a certain importance to some small elements in this film, like empty waste plates on the table, that accident, fluent work of the mother, the dance. I'm very sure it's a benchmark made by Nimisha chechi for all actress while selecting roles and the performance. Simply Great

It's not just about the theme but about the way they created this masterclass.. superbly directed movie..one of the best in recent times.
Yours is the most nuanced review of this movie. I belong to a nair tharavad from kerala and have lived with my great grandmother and grand mothers ( mygrand mther and her 3 sisters) .. so it cant get more traditional than that.
the tharavad show in the movie seems to be upper middle class one.. there is no way in a house of that size nair women sweep and scrub the floors let alone cook all alone. while patriarchy is prevalent all across india - I will say with confidence that it should be the least in a nair household - because nairs are matrilinear households. to this day mother-in-law daughter-in-law relationship is most nuanced and much healthier in comparison to any other group. so I found this movie exaggerating and projecting problems in other societies into a nair family ( due to his own biases perhaps?) ..
Bringing Sabarimala issue was totally unwanted and destroyed the movie for me. like I said I have not seen women isolated for periods in NAIR households from 60s onwards. In fact I asked my grand mother who turned 94 yesterday if she was had to sit in isolation and answer was no. this does not happen in 2021 and is a gross exaggeration.
In our families when men put mala for sabarimala - and start their penance, it is THEY who remove out from main house if there are lot of females in the house. it is ridiculous what they showed in the movie. my father went to sabarimala every year and he never yelled at us if we touched him or sat at a table with him while eating.
my few cents and what made me not enjoy this movie..
@Valentine Vanessa Yes Nairs are matriarchal families. the house is known by the name of the senior female in the house. kids take their mothers house name. ancestral property is usually handed down via the girl child. even today when most families are in semi urban setting - the daughter in law is not regarded as a property in Nair households - since she still belongs to her house. never leaves mothers house to come into husbands. for practical reasons, may stay at husband's place, but she has full rights in her own house. this is unlike any other sect/caste/religion in India. so for the author to chose a nair tharavad to tell this story did not make sense to me.
Menstruation issue is definitly exaggerated beyond acceptable norms. brahmins were the most who followed isolation strictly. in Kerala muslim households are also very particular not to touch koran or prayer matt during periods.
it is a necessary subject , reasonably well handled, but director could have avoided these exaggerations for a better experience. I wish he concentrated on the lack of intellectual freedom for women more than kitchen work.
I have been reading the film reviews of Bharadwaj Rangan all my childhood on Indian Express His writing and insight have deeply inspired me. Thank you for being that influential childhood figure. ❤️

Does this still happen? Specially in a Kerala Household? If it does, does it happen.only in a Hindu household ? What was the need to bring in the Sabarimala issue? That too aggrevated..no scooters were burnt by supporters.
The movie shows a great reality on how narrow minded men can move on from one realation to another very quickly rather fixings the problem BTW them.. Overall a great movie

This was my experience and I guess many women do relate to such experiences. The man had been a a very one dimensional and lazy representation yet many a times that's a reality in many households in the world. The city grown men are more aware yet there is a kind of oblivion that they live in. Just my experience and opinion.
4:35 sir u talked about however bad people are. But they think they are right...in every kind of way....that is clwarly showing in his 2nd marriage. And trust me its not an exaggeration. He didn't learnt from his mistake, and he will not. I have seen it in front of my eyes.
Thats the point, he ll not & such people ll never learn. Sad reality.
Great movie great director. By knowing the names of producers and director I got to know how smart and what intensions they have in making this movie.
I'm a Hindu. My mom and sister and my wife do the same things as how they shown in movie but all with lot of respect, love and affection... I watched the complete movie very conciously it make we weird by the way they are focusing their camera on. They may think that they got success with n insulting or dragging down the entire Hindu community. But that is not possible we Hindu are been great stood as great example or love and affection in the families and between the families and from generations to generations.
And we always given huge support women empowerment, if anyone have lot of aspirations they should look for a wise guy.
The Hindus should not appreciate this movie what is their intention showing, putting waste water in ayyapa daities ..
Did you notice none of the actors had names, they were 'etta', Acha, mole, or Chechi .
He was so quick to get offended about manners and his declaration ,that it's 'my' house and I will do what I like in my house .
How she is guilt tripped into apologizing .
Ufff ! It's so nuanced .

Some men have no redeeming qualities. Especially when it comes to his wife. Those qualities may be seen at his workplace or with his friends
you really like this movie Mr.Rangan. Your smile and sparkling eyes says it all.
I used to enjoy watching TV shows in the eighties but in the last 30 years I hardly had any thing to see for me as a man! All TV shows are made for housewives! It seems only the housewives have the time to enjoy TV!
If the premise of the movie "The Great Indian Kitchen" is true ie. housewives are overworked and not a femine ist propaganda then how is it that only housewives gets time to watch TV?
(Deleted third time inspite of self-censoring of facts! This comment just got deleted! Are we living in democracy? Say anything against Femine ist false propaganda against men and you are supressed! )
My father in law likes idly only if it is stone ground by hand. He chews and leaves drum sticks around the plate and walks away without removing the plate or the trash he leaves . He is 82 years old and ‘retired’ from farming 25 years ago. My 80 year old mother in law has been in the kitchen for 65 years . Doing the same thing repetitively for most of her life. Stone ground idly , hand pounded chutney , grate the coconut not grind it in mixie because he likes the texture better . All this is done while reads news paper for 2 hours in the morning . She passed away 3 months ago and finally got the true retirement she needed and deserved . She has been replaced in the kitchen by a 40 year old helper. No , he doesn’t have to change or make adjustments. He is not a bad guy you see .
I think the big and old house is the villan in this story . The kartha (headman) of the house is as humble as religion. They never show there canines at mainstream.
Heard about the movie....saw it it’s almost true for our parents generation I don’t know is it realevent now for majority of population.....the director tried to demonize and over exaggerate the ritual related to Sabrimala and periods.....in fact I can relate it to my mom,her life was four times harder than this but she used to enjoy those periods days so much .....because for 4 days she didn’t have to think about house hold chores.....so his intention is purely political.....he said it in a very polish way like the old man in the movie.
This movie should win National and Oscar awards. It should be tax free. It must be shown and discussed in schools. Brilliant film. Too bad @Netflix and @Amazon
Wonderful review..😊
The Suraj Venjaramoodu (SV) character deserves the waste water on the face because he dint get the plumber. But I never saw the character of nimisha addressing the problems she was having like. She could have kept a waste plate or atleast a paper for the father son duo , to keep their waste it would have been an eye opener. She could have taken SV offer when he asked "should I get the tooth brush" (she was nurturing the ego)
more over the family doesn't seem to look they are all poor, she could have employed the kitchen help full time
atleast asked about it in the movie.
All this wouldn't make her a less homemaker but fail to understand are women of these days all that docile.(never seen one) they don't let you take them for granted
I really think the washing scene was highly exaggerated as the old lad is concerned about what might happen to his clothes as if they were something out of the world.(poor excuse)
Well the director definitely had his directions so not commenting on that.
Spoken like a typical Indian male chauvinist. I feel sorry for you’re mom sister and wife. This is what goes on In India and every Indian male needs to watch. Thank god I live in the states and don’t have to put up with this crap and my husband is nothing like this
The Great Indian Kitchen - Time-pass watch.
And if you have OCD of cleanliness esp kitchen waste etc its over nauseating. Be prepared. :)
1) What if you miss it?
Well, then you miss 1.25 hours of male chauvinism and 15 mins of predictable feminism.
2) And what if you want catch up on the movie?
Ask our mothers how their mothers started their married life in your native village, then add to it a slightly city version of our moms and appliances-aided kitchen life of ours. Male characters eat, eat and eat... burp and again eat.
3) Heard the female protagonist takes a very bold decision?
Nothing new of walking out of an unhappy marriage. Many young and old women are taking this step.
4) So whats different about TGIK?
Nothing. Just the title to catch attention.

Never expected BR to review this one!... But anyways, its always a pleasure to hear out BR's thoughts!
At the end when Suraj get married to an another women , it just says that it's India, and neither our man changes nor the system...it's women who need to change ..
And the question is why is it always women has to change?? Why cant it be a man?? I agree that women need to take a stand but does that really work in a highly patriarchial society like us??? Women are conditioned such a way that they always end up like this. Instead, if a man decides to educate his daughter rather than getting her married to some stranger, then we can see the society changing. A father should support her to be independant. Yes, a mother can do that but in a patriarchial society, it has many limitations.
@@ANU-gc8sl , I too feel women need to change. We need to put our foot down first. Also when we bring up our children we should stop molly coddling them.Bring both genders to do everything. When we do that and teach them to do everything then they will teach their kids etc. Men don’t become the way they are just like that. They are brought up that way. And since mothers are the first teachers of children I feel mothers should start changing their thought process first.
System take time to change.Women feel guilty to demand help with house work, men see that other men around them do not have to do house work, and conclude that their wives are just complaining individuals. Wanting to divorce for this reason, will not get any support. In the minds of people, it's too stupid a reason to make such a huge change.
Also women often are too particular about housework. When men does the work half heartedly, the woman goes on rectifying them, and gradually its back to the old ways.
I think they deliberately avoided giving any negative shade to the husband and father characters. It is obvious that they represented the Indian patriarchal society. So their behaviors are considered normal. The movie is trying to say how bad even these thoughts/behaviours are. For that they dont need to add anymore negative shade, because they already have those bad characteristics.
True dat.
I agree with this.
It was the right way to tell the story, truly depicting how normalised is the patriarchy and oppression against women in India that we don't find any wrong in it. Its the story of almost every home.
@@gaurishankarh9027 yep👍
This great movie teaches that Both WOMEN and MEN should do OUTSIDE and HOUSEHOLD works equally. No Gender should bear extra burden. Both need respect and appreciation for their work......
The actress is Nimisha Sajayan- not Nimisha Vijayan . She is a Kerala state award winner for best actress- a talented actress
Typical malayalis finding fault in the tiniest detail instead of seeing the bigger picture🤭😄
@Atr Abhinav outside keralites may not be aware...mistakes happen...show your culture by kindly correcting the mistake instead of crucifying him.
He has corrected it in his comments with apology.
A wonderful film that reminds us of what a kitchen is, what a misery in the kitchen is and beyond that a woman is not a household appliance
Poor review, many metaphors, subtle gestures, scenes just not discussed.
This movie deserves a female reviewer I think. Only then can you understand the brilliance of this movie that brings to highlight the truth I see when every woman gets married in their beautiful jewellery.
Ha ha.. true . Indian cooking is time consuming... not like making a sandwich.. which also results in lot of dishes to wash which again is time consuming and tiring...
Sometimes I feel how easy is it to cook and eat like westerners. Just a sandwich. Breakfast over
Exactly ... A lot of people look down on frozen or refrigerated food
Something else I've noticed is the camera angles. The first half of the movie mainly comprises of static shots, while the latter half has a bunch of handheld/steadycam shots, possibly symbolising the growing agitation. Of course this is just my speculation.
Exactly I thought! After a point the cam was following front and back of Nimisha where as in the initial portions such movements where less..it added an underlying tension to scenes where ppl usually (over)use bgms. Really loved the movie..❤️
Good one. I did notice the steadicam shot as it happened in the movie and as you rightly said, it adds to the growing momentum in the storyline.
We will feel like giving a slap to Suraj's character.....
Acting level💯🔥
Everyone nailed their respective roles. Great Content. Great Film. A must watch.
@@happy795 Yeah💯
It was a cliche bad husband character. They should have made it more convincing like Suraj’s father character.
