is this true? Because Id imagine that accounting requires equations in order to calculate future revenue, when dealing with huge numbers and really small numbers..Im a freshman in college and we are learning certain equations for business..does this really translate into the accounting world?
merc340sr i am a final year accounting student now, and i am doing advanced calculus. You may not require to use it in your career, but you have to learn it.
I'm glad you're a vlogger who's at the same an accountant. Ive been looking for a channel who could inspire and motivate me as an accounting student. That's why i subscribed. Thanks
Yeah ! I found very less amount of Interest on Accounting area on youtube. Im doing Chartered Accountancy from India and honestly saying very less number of people have any idea about it. Finally Found some Account loving Vlogger . || Subscribed ||
CALL OF KIDD How did it go? I kinda want to get an early start to build up a resumé. I would think you would need to go to school for at least one year before looking for an internship
before entering college im afraid that i might not love accounting but when im a sophomore now, im hyped to continue this journey because accounting may be hard but it is worth the fight. just dont give up and avoid procrastination! fortunately most of my cousins are accountants so i dont have a problem with books
That stress for money!! I know how that feels!! I've been to financial difficulties before and learned that managing money is very important and been managing money for years. Those life experience got me into looking for Accounting career and I felt it was something I can do. What you said on last part of the video was very deep as well. :)
My nephew is in accounting at the moment, just finishing an apprenticeship. It's great to not only see the makeup aspect but see the journey you have been on in terms of your career being fruitful. We'll done! I'm sure you have inspired a lot of your younger subbies to work hard and have ambition xxx
This video makes me so happy, seeing you so passionate about accounting made me smile throughout this whole video. I'm a senior in high school wanting to purse an accounting careered this video made me so excited! Thank you so much for making this! Ok.... now to go binge watch all of the rest of your videos haha
You have no idea how helpful this is!! I just completed my sophomore level accounting class, but i definitely liked financial better LOL. This video gave me some inspiration to keep going! :) Subscribed
i really appreciate you post this video since i been confusing trying to figure out if i should go for accounting or pediatric nurse . You have gave me a more confidence about accounting since my family and my friends tells me why do i want to go for accounting is so much math but is actually more then that i truly love your video .
Yes I'm so happy you made this video . I'm more confident and I made up my mind clearly and I choose accounting . I will do more of my reviewing Stephienese
I really hope I made the right choice, Im a freshman majoring in accounting and attending a community college, but plan on transfering to a university in my town. From what Ive been told the University has a great Accounting program and told me I shouldn't have a hard time finding a job...hopefully all goes well
Before getting an offer from an Accounting master program, I watched your videos. Having been studying as an Accounting major for almost a year, I am still watching your videos. Thank you very much for sharing! Stephienese. Btw, miss your doggy already. She's so adorable! LOL
I really like you! You sound exactly like me, as I also chose accounting because of the job stability and being able to provide for myself. Also, everything you said about the recruiting process is exactly what I am going through at the moment as well! Would you recommend starting a career in public or private accounting? Also, do you think there are many disadvantages for those who do not start their career in public accounting with the big four? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
+Christina Tung Awww thank you so much and I really think we'd get along! Birds of a feather :) Since I started my career in public, I'm biased in thinking that public accounting is a great place to start your career. I feel like in public accounting, you are exposed to a wide range of accounting areas rather than starting at a company and working on cash, AP or AR. Public accounting requires employees to stay up to date on new accounting standards and changes so you are always up on the times in the accounting world. IMO working even at a mid-tier firm rather than Big 4 would be a great way to start your career, as long as there are public companies as clients... it may not be as beneficial if one started at a small local firm that worked on mom and pop shops but I am coming from what I've experienced so take that with a grain of salt. As far as disadvantages, I really think that certain companies who think that Big 4 means highest quality may not choose a candidate who did not have Big 4 experience. I do feel that there's a certain kind of person who is successful in the Big 4 and some companies really want that... to me that is people who are extremely dedicated to their work and will put their personal life aside for the company. Also, I feel like people from the Big 4 are able to work in high stress situations because we've been through them several times but you can get this experience at other companies too. From a technical skills and soft skills stand point, I think you can get the same from Big 4 or a mid-tier firm... it's mainly battling the perception with some companies who prefer a Big 4 background. I hope this makes sense and your questions are really good... I might just need to film a video to address questions like these! If you have any more questions, you know where I am :)
+Stephienese I think we would get along well too! I also chose to pursue accounting in order to provide for myself, after seeing my own family struggle growing up. You also have good values, and are career-driven, like myself. I am leaning towards public accounting, but I have an interview with a firm that only audits private companies, which is why I asked. Thank you SO MUCH for your insight, I really appreciate it, as you are the type of person I aspire to be in a few years. I missed the on-campus interviews for the big 4, as I was aiming more towards mid-tier and smaller firms. My colleagues tell me that you have the opportunity to a larger learning curve in smaller firms, as in the big 4, you are auditing such a large company that you will be stuck on one client/assignment for a year. Having worked for the big 4, can you comment on that? Furthermore, was it hard transitioning from being a student to 50 hour work weeks? Did you have any accounting related internships prior to graduation? Also, what CPA review guide did you use/do you recommend? How long post-graduation did it take you to get your CPA license? Also, thank you for the CPA video you uploaded, as it was very encouraging how you remained optimistic after failing the first time. Sorry for the insane amount of questions, as you can imagine, I am very excited/curious about what lies ahead. :)
+Christina Tung I think if your long term career goal is to be part of a private company and not necessarily work for a public company, a smaller firm with private clients would be great! At the Big 4, I saw only certain parts of my large public client's audit and not every piece, your colleagues are on point on that for sure. I worked on smaller public jobs as a senior where I was able to see every aspect of the job and even now, I've worked on larger private jobs and have seen every piece of the audit. I definitely have learned a lot from both experiences and think there are merits in both avenues :) It was difficult first getting out of college and working busy season hours a few weeks later, but I had interned with the firm during one busy season in college so I had an idea of what to expect hours wise.... I didn't know that I would be traveling and being away from home for large stretches though so that was hard. But I already had it in my mind that I'd be working a ton so it didn't end up being too hard of a transition other than learning to cope with the physical and mental stress. I used Becker to pass the CPA exam and my firm ended up paying for the materials. It took me 1 1/2 years after graduating to pass the exam mainly because i was still adjusting to post college life, figuring out how to balance personal/ work life and just staying focused after work to study for it. But it was so worth it in the end once I was able to pass in a 3 1/2 month period. I hope this helps and I'm always here if you have more questions :)
+Stephienese Thank you for the insight once again! I have five on campus interviews and an office tour next week for various mid-tier and small local firms; thanks to your advice, I have more of an understanding of which firms I would like to vigorously pursue. What industries have you further specialized in, or what industries are your favorite to audit?
I'm currently in school trying to finish my accounting major, and I had to find some type of motivation to study, and I came across your videos. I'm so glad I did, the reasons you specified on why you chose accounting is pretty head on to why I chose the path. Thank you for this video, it really was helpful.
+Miganoosh Margoosian (MigsMind) I'm glad it was helpful :) I know it's hard sometimes to stay motivated but keep your goals in mind and you'll achieve them!
I recently got recruited by Deloitte and I'm still a co-op in the Audit department like you! I don't live in the US and our office is very small, all females, average age mid-twenties, so the culture here is pretty cool so we can dress a bit differently (lashes and all that) keeping it business-like of course. I came from your CPA tips video because I want to take it right after college (and hopefully get that big bonus ;) ). I think you're inspirational, you're who I want to be like in a few years. I am totally subbing! You're my new big sis/unnie ^___^ Much love from my little island! (I hope you see this comment)
+Philly Mun Hi Philly! That's is so awesome that the culture is pretty flexible, I totally want to find a company like that one day :) You sound like someone who can accomplish anything you put your mind to :) Thank you so much for your kind words and I'm definitely your big sis ;) Keep in touch and I'd be happy to help give advice if you ever need it! Happy New Year :)
Wow this was a great video, thanks for sharing! I am in my third year as an accounting major and began doubting myself if I was going to be able to do it. After watching this, I can totally relate myself with you. I just needed a reassurance.
+Samantha Martinez I am so glad this was helpful. You can do anything you set your mind to, doll! I really encourage you to keep with it if accounting interests you. It will be a fulfilling career choice! You're already over half way done, you got this ;)
Great video!! I am also an accounting graduate this year, and will start my job with a mid size firm in Nov 2014. I also saw your CPA tips video which was very helpful. Great inspiration!
Marvin Matias Thank you! I am so glad I could be of help & congrats on starting with a mid size firm this year! I hope you have a great experience & enjoy it :)
Hi! I just wanted to thank you so much for sharing this!! I'm also an accounting student and will be having the big four career fair next week. This video really release some of my pressure in some way... thank you!!
Wow I feel like I listen to myself talking. I am in accounting career too. Your thought about it and how you are independent are the way I hold myself up. We are women that want to stand our own two feet but your husband is a lucky man and it is also a plus for us to have a great man around to support you.
thank you so much, I'm going to uni this September to study accounting and was having second thoughts about it and was stressing about it a lot and this has helped
Thank you so much for posting this! I feel as though because of the way I dress that I wasn't a "fit" for accounting. (I'm like you- very into make up and fashion. I constantly like to be different ) But your video definitely helped me to not focus on my outer appearance but my intelligence. I also want to work in an accounting firm that has sort of a relaxed/creative environment.
Hi, Stephanie! So, I chose accounting for a lot of reasons, one being that jobs are essentially guaranteed. But I've graduated from an online program (WGU) 5 months ago, and I've been searching in Dallas (one of the best job markets). I've applied to over 70 positions (3 with internal references), and cant seem to move farther than the initial interview. I have bookkeeping experience and 3 years of teaching experience. I am a female, bilingual, minority member. Why do I feel unemployable?
I really liked your video and when you are talking about your work experience, it gave me my own future work be like. I don't know your personality and career matches so close to me. Even though I am working on bachelor's in business accounting, and have aim of being CPA, I am thinking of going into audit and after watching your video I was like oh man I found what I have been looking for. As I always hope of seeing or meeting someone who can tell me his/her experience and listen to her and see if its right. Thank you!
+Karma Yangkey I'm glad I could help provide some insight! I know it would have been helpful to know in advance when I was in college so I'm glad I can be that resource for you :)
adriennealine Aww thank you for watching! I am glad I can share my experience with others, it's so much more rewarding to be able to help someone else out and share knowledge :)
I really like your videos, especially your one about studying for the exam! I'm prepping to begin after tax season (I'm also in public accounting) and I will definitely use your tips! Thank you!
The work culture you described fits Google as well. Also can you make a list of things we should do to prepare for a big four internship? (Calculator, notepads, what to study, etc).
Thank you so much for these videos! I am just entering college and considering accounting. My mom is a Staff Accountant and my dad owns a business so I do get an inside look at the business of accounting. These videos are giving me a greater look into the idea of accounting.
thank you for uploading this video! I learned a lot about what accounting is all about~ This has really helped me in deciding what I want to major in OTATO :)
Stephienese, your input was very helpful. I plan to become a CPA as well, and chose accounting as my major for similar reasons as you. One thing that I am not sure of is the industry that I want to go into. As an ultimste goal, I would love to have my own business and work from home. Is that something that you ever considered? I have many interests, but I'm also taking into account the corporate culture. I want my job to be fun and work with other people that are also passionate about what they do. What technical/ educational background is required to set up your own firm? You are a very positive role-model for women who also want to be independent and successful.
Lucia Lucia Thank you so much, I am so honored and flattered by your comment. I have considered it, I just didn't know exactly what it was I wanted to have a business of (tax, consulting or whatever). I would think you probably will want to gain experience at an accounting firm if you want to do tax or audit (which could lead to consulting). Basically you would learn the technical skills for your particular field then apply it to your clients. Try to learn and identify the common problems at your various clients so you can apply those solutions later in your career. Good luck :)
I have been watching your videos for 2 weeks now! I'm 20 years old and I majored & graduated with a degree in accounting in 2016. I'm currently doing Masters in Accountancy for fulfilling the prerequisites for CPA exam. As an expert in Accounting Industry, how would you look at a person having a dual degree like CPA + CIMA ? Do employers value the Management Accounting Degree as much as CPA? Note: CIMA is the Europe equivalent of AMA (US). FYI we really need you to answer q&a on topic of accounting on 'Quora'. I really love your videos & I really look forward to make my career in Accounting.
I love your videos! I am on the path of accounting but I am wondering if getting a masters in accounting is really worth it. I like accounting but I am also interested a lot in business. I actually have opened a small business with my mom and I feel accounting would be super helpful in that. The college Im attending offers a 5 year masters program in accounting and it seems like a good route but I am not sure if I should obtain a masters in accounting or just get my CPA license and get an MBA.
I work in Payroll now, but definitely would like to experience Accounting side one day, too...or Human Resources side. I like HR as they got paid more than Payroll and almost as much as Accounting dep. plus, it is fun job :). All in all, Accounting is good major to chose as it opens lots of doors for you, and it actually is very easy job - well, at least Payroll is :).
What did you have to wear at the big four? Was there a dress code? I like to dress up, but in a business professional way. Your reason to come into accounting is a very good one... That's what I want for my future kids.
missdebberly Thank you so much and I really appreciate you watching my videos all these years! I have seriously enjoyed sharing this journey with y'all and it's been fun looking back at my younger self lol
Thank you for your video! It's super helpful! Can you make a video explaining the difference between a CPA and a CMA? Can a CPA do what a CMA does and vice versa?
thank you so much... now I know why I should choose accounting and such... I really like what you said, you explained it very well. thank you my friend.
You're literally a savior!! You're video just made me want to work even harder!! I attend a university right now, but, I was wondering if the university has to hold some sort of title to get a good job in accounting ? If that made any sense, thanks for all your advice!!!!
+tiffsterlovesbieber I'm so glad I could help motivate you to continue on the path of accounting. I have found that most of the Big 4 accounting firms typically favor the more well known colleges but that's not the absolute rule. I went to a smaller university and was able to find a job. As long as your university is an accredited one, you should be fine. I hope this helps!
Thank you so much for making this video! I'm almost done with my bachelor's in accounting and I could use your advice. How was your experience when you first started applying what you learned in accounting to a internship/job? I ask because I'm doing accounting theory 1 and although I received A's in accounting 1, 2, and managerial, I find myself lost sometimes in theory when we're reviewing the material more in depth. I'm hoping it's because I haven't yet started applying the material I've learned in the beginning courses to a job or internship ( I hope to find one in the summer). I mean, the simple/basic things like what account is a prepaid, payable, equipment, ect, or what shows up in the balance sheet and income statement is all easy and hard to forget at this point lol. I guess what I am asking is did you get "more" from real life training than the classroom? Also, what was your most difficult class or classes? And sorry for the long post lol
+racequad9 Hi there! I love long posts, I know it's hard to get your point across in just a few words... the more detailed, the better in my opinion! Definitely agree, the basics of accounting were really easy. I did feel like certain real life, work experience helped cement some of the concepts I learned in school. Some of the audit concepts were SO hard to understand when I just read up on it. Even after I did my internship, I took audit and was like ?????? Some of the more complex and judgmental parts of accounting definitely need real life experience to really understand it. So you are definitely not alone in how you're feeling. Even other concepts like acquisitions and purchase price adjustments while they seem pretty straight forward in school, there are so many other factors and complexities in the real world. I think the classroom gave me a good foundation and once I started seeing situations at work and had to go back to theory to understand it, it really solidified my understanding. I hope this makes sense. Just try to get the theory down while you're in school, gotta pass those exams! But know when you start working, it will start to make more sense. I would go back to the accounting standards and even my old school notes if I faced something at work that I was having a hard time grasping. I hope this helps!
+Stephienese Thank you so much! You eased my nerves a bit lol. I'm just so eager to start working and apply what i've learned so far. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question
Kelsiexo Awww thank you :) That really means a lot to me. I really wasn't sure if this video would be helpful but glad to find a network of other accountants who like RUclips ;) You go girl, hope your internship is going well!!
Hi there! I will be working for a Big 4 this fall! I wanted to find out if you could give me any tips or advice on how to do well since it can get competitive and how did you manage to keep your composure during busy season. Great video btw, I feel like your reasons for choosing this career path were very similar to mine and I am glad I am not the only one who has thought the same. :)
Jocelyn Cardenas That's awesome doll, big congratulations on getting a job with the Big 4! Stick with it at least until you're a senior, it will open up doors like no other! I would say be yourself, be positive, no matter what it is whether it's actual accounting work or picking up meals. Also, try to learn as much as you possibly can and as lots of questions. Try to find a mentor in your firm and if you aren't able to, stay true to yourself (values, how you treat others etc). As far as keeping composure, I had a great support system, I had a couple of friends who I met at my firm and we supported each other so it was huge in me staying at the firm even after 1 awful busy season. All I can say about it is to get as much as you can out of the big 4, technical skills & soft skills. And try your best to not let the stress affect you outside of work. When it becomes a problem to separate the two, then I'd say it's time to look elsewhere if you communicate with the firm enough and nothing changes. Good luck love
This was a very helpful video and I'd definitely be interested in hearing more about Big 4. Specifically, what kinds of personality traits help you get recruited and succeed once there. Do you really need to be very sociable or can quieter types still do well?
Amy .Lasester Hi Amy! I have seen both sociable and quiet types as being successful in the Big 4. As long as you can communicate well with the interviewers and later on with your team/ client, you will do well. I find that a mixture of communication skills, ability/ willingness to learn, adaptability to change and a positive attitude goes a long way in the Big 4. You don't have to be a social butterfly to be successful, just get through the interview part and have a good resume (good grades plus extracurricular activities or work while in school). Audit has a lot to do with client interaction but as long as you can communicate clearly & effectively, you will do well!
Currently I'm looking into schools that offers accounting program in Minnesota, what are somethings to look for when apply for an accounting program that will put me in a good position to get a job.... your videos are such an inspiration
If you don't mind me asking, I am a high school senior interested in majoring in Accounting at Auburn University, and I was wondering what is your annual salary as a CPA?
Rachel Friend Hi there! My first year out of college I made $55K. I've gotten a raise every year and I'm pretty confident I'll be making $100K+ in the next year or so. Also, keep in mind cost of living adjustments, where I live it's pretty affordable so depending on where you life it will be adjusted. Hope this helps! I would definitely recommend going the accounting & CPA route :)
I really relate to you in this video, have you (and if not, could you) made a video of what you do in a day at work, like what your day looks like? Also, I'm working at my Bachelors in Acct. do you suggest Masters?
+Luck613 Hi there! I haven't done a day in my life video because I just don't feel comfortable sharing when I'm at my client's office. I post vlogs where I talk about what's going on. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how to share my day to day activities while still keeping the privacy of my client's and company. If you have the time and are willing to pay for graduate classes then I would suggest getting your Masters. By the time I finished my internship and signed my job offer, I had missed the deadline to apply for grad school and it would have pushed back me starting to work about 8 months. So i ended up getting my Bachelors and taking extra classes to get to the hours requirement for the CPA. If I had more time, I would probably have gotten my Masters and done the 5 year program but it was just bad timing.
Thank you for making this video! It was very helpful!! I am an accounting major and in the Spring, I will be at a Big 4 doing an internship? Can you possibly make a video about your internship experience or give any advice to anyone who will be doing an internship? I'm super nervous :/
heyitsjordyn1 Hi love! I'm so glad it was helpful. I actually just filmed an advice video that briefly goes over internship tips. If there's any other questions after I post that video, I would be happy to answer them! It will probably be up in the next week. Being nervous is good, it shows you really care about your future! Hopefully the video will give you some tips... and just channel that nervous energy into doing as well as you can :)
How do you become passionate about accounting? I'm in my fourth year. I see my fellow classmates be so excited about financial accounting or auditing or tax (depends which one they prefer), but I feel empty doing all my courses :( Sometimes I find things interesting but Idk if I can see myself excel in this profession. I originally chose it for the stability as well... but now I'm having a serious quarter life crisis. Is financial security worth the misery (for lack of a better term)? I know I won't be able to get into the big 4 because my GPA sucks. I just don't know if my motivation or reason for pursuing accounting is enough for me to continue. Ahhh. I need advice lol.
Thank you so much for this video, I learned a lot. I am a second year studying accounting and GPA isn't that strong but I'm trying to apply for internships at a small firm or boutique and learn more about accounting. you have given me more reasons to do so. - Could you do another videos about pros and cons of going into Big 4, what was the process like of getting internships and then getting the job offer ? (what about the summer leadership programs?) - how did you decide from audit, tax, or advisory? Thank you so much.
+le yee Win Hi there! I'm glad I was able to give you a little more insight :) I will definitely do another video on pros vs cons about the Big 4. I have a video about how to get an internship/ job out of college here: ruclips.net/video/PbKpinWhxig/видео.html I personally haven't had any experience with summer leadership programs though I've heard of a few firms that do this (I think PwC?). I chose audit based on the general description which was working in team environments, going from client to client and that it was an interesting career path. I didn't think tax would be for me because I liked being around lots of people. I didn't really know much about advisory when I was in college so I didn't even consider that career path. Happy holidays!
This video helped. I know accounting interests me but I'm just nervous that I can not handle it or be the best at it that I can possibly be. I am just afraid of failure or doing something that I end up not liking in life.
Austin Cornell I totally know how you feel. You never really know until you try it. I can't say that I wake up every morning super passionate and wanting to work 24/7.... but the job is challenging, rewarding at times and I continue to learn things. If you end up not liking it, it's pretty easy to move into finance or operations.... good luck & just believe in yourself :) Failure is half the journey.
Hey Stephienese! I have watched quite a couple of your RUclips videos and I really like them! I am a recent accounting major graduate so really craving some useful tips on job hunting in accounting (especially the big 4) firms! :) I have done a lot of online application but that doesn't seem to work so well, so think that I should probably approach directly to the recruiters more? Do you have any advice on that, say like how to reach out on LinkedIn, or how to write a email to a recruiter? Thanks for bearing with my long message though... Haha! Btw really love your make-up and look on RUclips!
+Haiyi Chen Thank you so much! Glad my little insights could help out :) I think reaching out directly to recruiters is a great idea. When you write an email to them, make sure you format it in a professional manner (use proper grammar, punctuation, etc.), that way they'll take the message seriously you know? I would keep your email as succinct as possible. Say what college your graduated from, your major, if you're CPA exam eligible and you are interested in joining that particular firm. Hopefully having a direct connection will help out in your job search. Good luck!
I am really interested in auditing but I'm worried about the work hours and stress. Could you comment more about that and how it can vary? Thank you! This video was fantastic!
+Zora Chung Thank you so much! No going to lie, some parts of the year (usually Jan - April) are pretty intense, normally 55 hour weeks if not more plus the pressure of meeting client deadlines. It can be overwhelming at times but I think that's part of the job with public accounting (external audits). If you did internal audit, normally the hours are pretty steady (40 hours) and you are reaching for deadlines for your specific company so the stress level is a bit less. But after your first year of working you'll normally learn to cope or manage the stress and longer hours.
Stephienese Could you talk more about how you balance your life? What was the most number of hours you've ever worked in a week? Did that include the weekend? I'm a pretty unhealthy individual and I'm concerned with the workload of being an auditor, but it looks like something I may be good at. I'm still in basic accounting at university, but it just seems like a good fit from your descriptions. I don't want my illness to define me in life and in my career, so I'm willing to push myself, but I don't know to what extent. I'd also like to have a goal set out to work towards. Thank you so much for these videos. I love them and I hope you make many more.
+Zora Chung I'm still working on balancing my work load & personal life. I've found that in public accounting, rather than finding a balance (50/50), I've more switched focus to either personal or work depending on deadlines or important things going on. It's not perfect, I'm still working on it so once I figure out a method that works, I'll definitely share. When I was in the Big 4, the longest I worked was around 105 hours within a 7 day period (Monday - Sunday) at the client's office. But there was a 7 month period where I worked 70-80 hours, Monday - Sunday, at the client's office (can you guess why I left the Big 4? LOL). At my mid-tier firm, I pretty much worked 55 hours consistently Jan - Feb, 50-55 in March with one week being 65 the April 45 hours. Afterwards it got pretty much back to normal at 40s with it going up here or there to 50s for a week or two. Recently I've hit 60 one week but it's more of an exception when I hit the longer hours. I would say that at the Big 4, it was harder for me to take time for myself and to keep myself healthy (didn't exercise ever & ate poorly). I've had a bit more me time at my mid-tier firm although it would be nice to consistently work 40 hours a week even during Jan - April.... I would say give it a try and if your medical condition is really something that hinders you at times, be open with HR or your team so that there's an understanding and maybe a flexible work arrangement can be made. I hope this helps!
+Stephienese 105?! Oh my god that must've been crazy! I don't know if I could survive that long term. Maybe I'll try for 2 years just to say I did then switch into something a little more predictable. That must've been so emotionally, physically, and especially mentally draining! Balancing work, life, and relationships/dating sounds impossible with the number 105 haha I'm glad there were some times with fewER hours for you though.
I have a question. Did you ever had to work when you were in college to pay your tuition or other expenses? Because I was thinking since your major was accounting and so I thought may be you focus all your time for studying?
+Karma Yangkey My first 2 years of college I went to community college and my parents helped pay for my tuition and I lived with them so I didn't really need to work to pay expenses. I worked at the community college just a few hours a week to make some extra spending money. The next 3 years at university I moved in with my husband (then boyfriend), had student loans/ scholarships that paid for tuition but I worked part time (around 20 hours) at a golf course to help pay living expenses. It was more tough the last couple years of college when the material became more complicated but it all worked out in the end.
I am also an accounting major! Aiming to gain my CPA! I was wondering how come I want to start a youtube channel being an accounting major (I may come off boring) but your channel is #legitgoal! Love it! Love it! Love it!
Afi Lewinsky Girl you are too much, soooo sweet! I say talk about or create videos on what you love... whether that's accounting (haha), fashion, whatever it is, if you show something you are genuinely interested in, I'm sure you won't be boring :) Definitely start it up while you're in college, that's what I did... it becomes harder once you start working. And yessssss love, with that attitude you'll definitely be getting your CPA in no time ;)
Thanks! Really enjoyed the video; pushed my drive to where I wanna be :) Few questions tho: What are your hours like right now a week? And how long were your hours at one of the Big 4s? And were there any other reasons why you didn't think you fitted in one of the Big 4s?
***** I would say since the beginning of June, I've been working straight 40s and I am pretty sure it will be 40 or 45 tops until January unless I'm on an unusual transaction like a company going public. At the Big 4, my summers would be June through August where I would work 40 except the last year I was there, I worked 80 (and last week of filing broke 100). At the Big 4, the hours ramp up around September to required 45, October required 50 and then taper off to 40 during the holiday (at least at my old firm). I think just the culture of the Big 4 didn't work for me. Maybe if I was single, didn't own a home, etc. it would be different. I worked so much that I didn't want to spend even more time away from home. I never really felt appreciated for the work I put in or the hours (along with others around me) but I kinda already knew that going in. So I just tried to be ok with it for as long as I could and once it got to the point of affecting my personal life, I decided it wasn't the right culture for me. This was a really good question though, I will definitely address it in more detail in an upcoming video! Glad I could help encourage you, go accountants!!! ;)
Great video Stephienese, I know it's been a while but could you please give me any tips on Regs part? Are there any questions relating to definitions only?
+Trina Wynne There were questions asking for definitions but it was really a mix of questions. I felt there was more conceptual or work through certain problems kind of questions. I would say really understand the difference between individual and corporate tax and be sure to study the business law part too..... I made the mistake of thinking I could theorize my way through those but it would have been better to actually study it lol.... good luck!
Very helpful video Steph! I'm planning to get a masters degree in Professional Accounting. could you tell me if I can apply for the position of finance manager with this degree??
Have watched your accounting/cpa videos several times. I hope you have more videos about it. I want to take this route also. I did finish college but it was abroad & it's hotel & resto. I now live in the states & I was wondering if I should take another 4 year college degree in accounting or will a 2 year accounting course suffice ? Is that enough to make me a cpa or to work for an accounting firm? Got any suggestions for good quality schools as well? TIA
+Stephanie Guersey I think a 2 year course might suffice, it really depends on what state you are in and taking the cpa exam with. In Texas, you are required to have 150 hours from college (I assume a lot of that you already have from your previous college). But you also have to get 30 hours of upper level accounting, 24 hours of business and 3 hours for ethics. I would highly suggest talking to a business advisor at the college you are interested in going to who could help steer you in the right direction. It would definitely need to be from a regular university, not a junior or community college in order to get CPA eligible. You could look up the state pass rating for the universities in your area to get an idea of which university to go to. I hope this helps!
I have a classmate who's almost 31. Also, I went to med school for 4 years before I changed to accounting and started it with 23. In my country you start your "major" at 18 after high school. So I'm almost 25 now in second grade and I'm older than most my classmates. But some are even older than me, 28, 30, 31. So it's never to late to find your dream profession and start studying ;)
+sorrygtfo definitely not too late! I work with people who chose accounting as their 2nd career so starting out in their late 20s, early 30s. Not uncommon at all!
how are the hours for being a CPA? In the different sectors you have worked in. I am interested in accounting but want a good work/life balance. what direction would you go in accounting?
If your in tax, busy season is through April 15 so you'd be working more than 50 hours and on weekends. They have busier periods around Sept & Oct too. In audit, we work 50+ hours usually through April and have busier periods each quarter. It usually gets more relaxed during the summer. If you're wanting a more consistent 40 hour work week, you might like going into industry (working in the accounting dept of a company). I personally chose audit in public accounting because I wanted to learn as much as possible and see the entire accounting process. I felt I'd have more career growth and opportunities in audit which I have. The busier periods do suck and I can't say I want to do it for the rest of my career because it is tiring.... but I'm happy and fulfilled. Hope this helps!
hi I just got my bachelors in accounting and it would be awesome if you did a video on whether the big 4 or midsize is the better choice and the differences. Also what would you suggest someone to do to get into these firms, such as gettting an internship and such? thanks!
xbabyxloveyousx3 Hi love! Yes I will definitely do a video on both topics. I plan on doing kind of a series on it, so hoping I can film the "how to get a job/internship" video this coming week to be followed with my experience at big 4 & midsize. Thank you for the suggestion babe!
hi,im in my first year of degree in accountancy and finance.I dont really like maths and i almost failed my accounts exam on my previos semester. My parents highly recommend me to choose this course coz it has more jobs opportunities so i have to stick with it.Any advice for weak people like me to succeed?
+Rowena Grace You can try to study more and improve on understanding the concepts of math and accounting. However, in all honesty, if you don't have any interest in math or accounting, I would suggest looking for a different career path. It won't help you to force yourself to study a topic you really don't have interest in. But if you are interested and it's more you're having a hard time grasping concepts, all I can suggest is to seek out help with study groups, your professor or tutoring to get a better understanding. I don't think you're weak, it may be a matter of changing your study habits or finding a degree that you have interest in.... if you have interest in a certain field, it will motivate you more to try harder and to achieve the goals you set out for yourself!
Hi, I had a couple of questions if you dont mind When you worked for the big 4 as a senior with a CPA what was your pay range? What do you think of the upcoming changes to the cpa exam? Do you think actually going for the CPA with the 150 credit hours is worth it? Thanks
Hi there! It ranged between $55 - $60k.... from what I've heard, seems like CPA candidates ate really going to prove they understand the concepts. Definitely sounds tough but doable! I personally do think it's worth it if you're eligible and don't want an MS. It saved me money and time to do my bachelor's with 150 hours and later my MBA versus doing the masters in accounting I dont really care to get. It's really based on your preference
thanks very much for all your tips. I am about to start my senior year at Temple - accounting major. I am getting stressed out just to think of the CPA exam. I am leaning toward starting the Macc program right after graduation. Any thoughts on that move? thanks again.
What kind of hours did you work at the Big 4? I hear all this talk about people working 80 hours a week and I've always wondered if they've included their commute time/lunch break into the 80 hours? Or how many weeks in a row an employee would actually work that many hours? I just can't imagine working much more than 60 hours a week for any length of time. If my goal is to eventually have a 40-hour work week should I go straight for a mid-size firm directly after graduation and skip the Big 4 altogether?
Jamie Anderson Most Big 4 firms require minimum of 55 hours a week during busy season which is normally through end of March, mid-April but many times drags on into the summer depending on certain transactions. My 1st busy season I worked minimum 55 hour weeks for almost 4 months with 3 or 4 weeks hitting around 80. 2nd busy season I worked 80 hour weeks for 7 months, several weeks hitting almost 100 hours. Last busy season worked around 70 from Jan-March then 80+ April - June and hit over 100 hours one week. None of this time includes commutes and it was very rare to take a lunch break during busy season. We usually ordered in and ate at our laptops. Is it the most efficient and productive time? Not at all, there's only so much you can work until your brain becomes less than efficient. Anyways, that's one of the reasons I left the Big 4, giving up that much time and putting your life on hold for half a year is not worth it to me. I would say if that's your goal, then a mid-size firm would be best rather than the Big 4. However, if you are wanting to move up into the executive levels of accounting (like controller, chief accounting officer, chief financial officer), most at that level want people with Big 4 experience. But if that isn't your ultimate career path, I would say mid-size firm FTW :) My past busy season I pretty much worked just 55, a couple weeks of 60 but nothing as bad as my Big 4 experience. It did drag out long though, probably June was when my big deadlines ended.... I definitely want to work consistent 40 hour weeks in the future! *Also, disclaimer, this was just my experience at the Big 4, some other people may have had a better experience or may like that kind of fast pace environment...
+bri young not going to lie so yes, it can be. No matter what job you get in accounting, there will always be deadlines. Some more pressing than others. But I think most jobs can be stressful and it's a matter of learning to manage stress in whatever job you choose (I'm still working on it lol)
hi I just graduated from high school and I was planning on joining the military but it didn't work out so im thinking about being an accountant. I know I have the skills when it comes to math but I didn't apply myself in high school. I think I would enjoy being an accountant because I am out going and also I for some reason like to deal with money and numbers and stuff im just wondering if its just mostly women that do this job or do u think from what told you it sounds like something I should look into. thank you and this video helped
+Justin Archuleta Hello! I'm glad my video could help in your interest in accounting. This field is definitely mixed with both men and women, I think there may be more women but there are definitely a ton of men doing this job as well. From what you said, it sounds like accounting or finance would be a good field for you to look into. I would say if you are going to college, try to take a basic accounting class (I took one at my community college while I did my basics which sparked my interest) and see if the concepts interest you. There might be basic finance classes as well but I am not as familiar. I wish all the best for you in your future endeavors and I'm here if you ever need advice!
+imwatchingthethrone If you want to be a CPA, then definitely go for an accounting major. You will need those intermediate accounting classes for the exam. Accountants can do almost anything in business and management. At my university, I have to take a couple management classes anyway.
I'm an HIM too, and i work outside my major in business development and i've been thinking lately of getting an MBA. But i have an opportunity to study accounting online as BA. Do you think its a good idea to start fresh again or just get an MBA?
+gabby If you like routine, having your own space, going to the same office each day and growing your knowledge of one company, managerial accounting would be a good route to go. If you like to change things up, be at different offices every few weeks and see different companies, public accounting would be good. Just know that public accounting requires more than 40 hours from Jan - April normally and sometimes throughout the year later on. Some managerial accounting jobs may call for overtime but I would say those jobs are the exceptions. Hope this helps!
+esteemaco I did work during college. When I was interviewing, I didn't have any actual accounting experience, just some waitress work experience & random jobs I did at my college. Future employers definitely look for people who have work experience while in college (or extracurricular like being part of an organization) as it shows a candidate can multitask successfully. So I suggest you get a part time job or get involved on campus as part of an organization (taking a leadership role like treasurer, secretary, vice president, etc. would improve your chances). I have another video sharing more tips if you want to hear me talk more about it: ruclips.net/video/PbKpinWhxig/видео.html
Thank you for the video! I have a question. I graduated BBA in 2007, and was raising my family until now. I had some jods here and there, but now I would like to pursue my career in accounting and I'm lost where to start how to get my foot in the field. May be you'll have some recommendations?
+Taty Nk try reaching out to a recruiter in your area, you can Google accounting recruiter in your city and they can hopefully help you on finding an entry level position. I think starting by getting work experience would be helpful and maybe auditing some accounting classes to ensure you're up to speed since it's been several years.
Hello steph ! I really love and enjoy your career videos on accounting. I'm a high school student (grade11) and I'm trying to figure out if accounting is the career path I should take. Is there any advice you would give to high school students who are interested in taking accounting in university ? I'm sorry for the long question but thanks so much for your videos they really are a great help 😌
You've probably already answered this but how many hours per week do you work? If you're only wanting to work 40hrs weekly.. is accounting the way to go?
+Joshua Potters there are jobs in accounting where you work 40 hour weeks. I would suggest working for a company (in industry) rather than public accounting. When I worked in industry, I did 40 hour weeks. Public accounting is more like 55 - 65 January through April and 40 (hopefully) the rest of the year with some weeks being more busy.
Actually, all the math you need is the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide. No calculus, no linear algebra, few statistics, etc...
I am a second year accounting student, and i did algebra, calculus and statistics.
Yes, but you will rarely use them when you will be working in accounting.
Algebra, calculus and statistics have more to with requirements for your business degree, rather than for accounting specifically.
is this true? Because Id imagine that accounting requires equations in order to calculate future revenue, when dealing with huge numbers and really small numbers..Im a freshman in college and we are learning certain equations for business..does this really translate into the accounting world?
merc340sr i am a final year accounting student now, and i am doing advanced calculus. You may not require to use it in your career, but you have to learn it.
Nothing wrong with the need to be financially secure.
Susie Smith ...difficult to get more out of life if you don't have minimum food, shelter clothing...financial security in that sense I mean...
I'm glad you're a vlogger who's at the same an accountant. Ive been looking for a channel who could inspire and motivate me as an accounting student. That's why i subscribed. Thanks
+Katleen Nellas awww thank you, I'm glad to have met other accounting interested people on the Internet 😊
Yeah ! I found very less amount of Interest on Accounting area on youtube.

Finally Found some Account loving Vlogger .

Stephie // stephienese is it possible i can get an internship now...im 17
+Ki min Na glad you understand where I'm coming from! Definitely wouldn't be able to do it if accounting wasn't somewhat interesting 😉
Absolutely :)
My nephew is in accounting at the moment, just finishing an apprenticeship. It's great to not only see the makeup aspect but see the journey you have been on in terms of your career being fruitful. We'll done! I'm sure you have inspired a lot of your younger subbies to work hard and have ambition xxx
Miss Rafique Thank you so much for your support and feedback! I really hope to help encourage others who are striving to make a living :)
I hope you give tutorials about Accounting or your daily life being an accountant- i would really appreciate it. Im an accounting student tho! :)
me too, gonna choose Accounting next year .
Can u do a video about negotiating a job offer and the pros and cons of working for a Big4 versus Mid-tier?
This video makes me so happy, seeing you so passionate about accounting made me smile throughout this whole video. I'm a senior in high school wanting to purse an accounting careered this video made me so excited! Thank you so much for making this! Ok.... now to go binge watch all of the rest of your videos haha
+Anastasia D haha awww thank you I never realized how I come across so I'm glad it comes off as passionate 😉
+Cruz Sepulveda Definitely 2 different career paths you can take! I'm glad I gave you a bit more insight into this field :)
Yes I'm so happy you made this video . I'm more confident and I made up my mind clearly and I choose accounting . I will do more of my reviewing Stephienese
Thanks for the video. I graduate in December. Looking forward to becoming a CPA.
+Stephienese
I think we would get along well too!
+Stephienese
Thank you for the insight once again! I have five on campus interviews and an office tour next week for various mid-tier and small local firms; thanks to your advice, I have more of an understanding of which firms I would like to vigorously pursue. What industries have you further specialized in, or what industries are your favorite to audit?
Christina Tung i
I'm currently in school trying to finish my accounting major, and I had to find some type of motivation to study, and I came across your videos.
You're my new big sis/unnie ^___^
Much love from my little island!
You're already over half way done, you got this ;)
Y'all
youshouldknow Texans stand up! Yall can't run with us!!
Marvin Matias I second that, Marvin!
the most perfect video!!! i'm also majoring in accounting and this video makes me so happy
***** Awwww I am so glad this video makes you happy :) I hope you're enjoying your accounting classes & it's going well!
You've inspired me. I've been thinking about investing and accounting for some time now and you've helped me to take that next step and start studying
Hi! I just wanted to thank you so much for sharing this!! I'm also an accounting student and will be having the big four career fair next week. This video really release some of my pressure in some way... thank you!!
+Lily Zheng I'm glad I could help! Hope your career fair went well and you got lots of possible leads :)
Wow I feel like I listen to myself talking. I am in accounting career too. Your thought about it and how you are independent are the way I hold myself up. We are women that want to stand our own two feet but your husband is a lucky man and it is also a plus for us to have a great man around to support you.
Reasey Bou That's awesome babe, I love meeting more women who have similar values & goals. Definitely agree, the hubby is an added bonus ;)
thank you so much, I'm going to uni this September to study accounting and was having second thoughts about it and was stressing about it a lot and this has helped
I am so glad it was helpful :) There are so many stylish and unique people in the accounting field so I'm glad to share some light on it :)
You're such a great inspiration Stephanie! Watched you for a long time and glad to see you successful and happy :)
Amnah Mahmood Thank you so much, you are so sweet! I really appreciate you supporting me for a while & glad to share my journey with you :)
I watched this for the second time. Thank you for sharing. I really appreciate how you're so down to earth.
adriennealine Aww thank you for watching! I am glad I can share my experience with others, it's so much more rewarding to be able to help someone else out and share knowledge :)
I really like your videos, especially your one about studying for the exam! I'm prepping to begin after tax season (I'm also in public accounting) and I will definitely use your tips! Thank you!
+Cece Buck I totally understand! I'm glad these tips were helpful and good luck during tax season!!
I am going to start my work in one of the public accounting firms this September! Thanks for the video!
AliciousAlice Me That's awesome, congrats on starting soon :) Enjoy your time beforehand as much as you can!
I am preparing CPA now... I also watched your CPA preparation video! very useful!
Thanks for this video.
Thanks for your videos! We love your channel and your focus on both accounting and lifestyle. It is great to see a new side of the industry!
i relate to you so much as of why you chose this path. im independent too. and connected with the accounting logic
I'm not doing accounting but the video was really helpful and interesting. I enjoy your career related videos!
So glad it was helpful and it's awesome you have people around you who can share real world experiences :)
DanceDiva234 lucky you, you'll get hired right away, hopefully Ill get involved into a accounting environment during my sophomore year
thank you for uploading this video! I learned a lot about what accounting is all about~ This has really helped me in deciding what I want to major in OTATO :)
I'm in school for accounting right now :) thanks for sharing this!
Charmagne McKinney My pleasure love! Yay for accounting majors!!! Hehehe, good luck in school, enjoy it!
I am double majoring in accounting and computer information systems. I want to sit for the CPA exam. Thank you for the info.
What did you have to wear at the big four? Was there a dress code? I like to dress up, but in a business professional way. Your reason to come into accounting is a very good one... That's what I want for my future kids.
What a proactive girl. Someone I would have liked to work with--I quit public accounting today.
Mr oplecta Thank you! Congrats on quitting public accounting, hope you enjoy life after it :)
Doing a research paper on accounting and this really helped :) thank you
+Valeria Martinez I'm so glad it was helpful :)
thanks for the video! keep up the good work ! always look fwd to your videos & you're one of the few you tubers i still respect after all these years!
missdebberly Thank you so much and I really appreciate you watching my videos all these years! I have seriously enjoyed sharing this journey with y'all and it's been fun looking back at my younger self lol
Thanks for sharing! It's kinda cool for a youtuber to be an accountant. Haha. I'm one course away from completing my degree!
Winnie Tsui That is so exciting boo!!! You're almost there, light at the end of the tunnel :)
Thank you for your video! It's super helpful! Can you make a video explaining the difference between a CPA and a CMA? Can a CPA do what a CMA does and vice versa?
New subscriber here!! Thank you for posting this :) I'm actually attending a Big 4 summer leadership program today... really excited!
Ophie O Thank you for subscribing!!! Hope the leadership program went well :)
thank you so much... now I know why I should choose accounting and such... I really like what you said, you explained it very well. thank you my friend.
+nuu Alex glad it was helpful!
Yes. Smile
I am really interested in becoming a CPA and your video is so helpful......thank you...I'm currently an accounts student
This video/ you are so relatable!
I'm currently a junior majoring in accounting and interning with a Big 4 Firm.
I love it !
New subbie!
Thank you for your videos! I get a better view of what accounting is. The long hours and deadlines seem very scary!
+merc340sr glad they've been helpful! It takes a bit to get used to but as long as you find ways to manage your stress, it isn't too bad haha
(what about the summer leadership programs?)
- how did you decide from audit, tax, or advisory?
Thank you so much.
+le yee Win Hi there! I'm glad I was able to give you a little more insight :) I will definitely do another video on pros vs cons about the Big 4. I have a video about how to get an internship/ job out of college here: ruclips.net/video/PbKpinWhxig/видео.html
I personally haven't had any experience with summer leadership programs though I've heard of a few firms that do this (I think PwC?). I chose audit based on the general description which was working in team environments, going from client to client and that it was an interesting career path. I didn't think tax would be for me because I liked being around lots of people. I didn't really know much about advisory when I was in college so I didn't even consider that career path. Happy holidays!
Thank you so much for the reply, Steph. Really appreciate this. Definitely watched the video you recommended. Love your vlogs too ^_^ Happy holidays
How do you keep track to find out if mistakes were made?
And yessssss love, with that attitude you'll definitely be getting your CPA in no time ;)
Great information as I am considering going into Accounting. Thank you :)
+Sunshine85282 Glad it was helpful :)
Thanks! Really enjoyed the video; pushed my drive to where I wanna be :)
Few questions tho: What are your hours like right now a week?
Glad I could help encourage you, go accountants!!! ;)
I am transgender and accounting major. Do you think I have a room in public accounting ? Suggestions? Or should I stay in staff accounting
hi i am thinking of doing a accountancy apprenticeship , i wana knw wT exactly the role of a accountant is as i am new to this
thank u
Hey I am really introverted, can anyone recommend me an area of public accounting that would suit me, if there are any?
Tax
Same
Do you ever do any filing or anything?
Do you have any advice for an introvert who wants to do audit?
So genuine. You would make a good friend!
Do you have times off like 1-2 week vacations like 2 a year?
Danny Moreno Yes in my firm I get a lot of time off so I try to take a week off here or there 3 or 4 times a year.
+Stephienese thank you so much!
I just turned 26 and will be taking an accounting class to see how I like it before I dive in. Am I too late to start this career?
Hi, I had a couple of questions if you dont mind
When you worked for the big 4 as a senior with a CPA what was your pay range?
+Vic R. If you're needing additional hours to become CPA eligible, I think it's a good idea!
Hi, im so happy I found your channel! I'am considering majoring in accounting and just wanted to know is it really stressful?
Did you major in accounting? I want to be a CPA as well but I am not sure what to major in, business, management or accounting. Thank you!
+imwatchingthethrone If you want to be a CPA, then definitely go for an accounting major. You will need those intermediate accounting classes for the exam. Accountants can do almost anything in business and management. At my university, I have to take a couple management classes anyway.
+Maiseymax696 thank you!
I work in Health Information Management but this video was very interesting! :)
+applebug I'm glad I could articulate myself well enough for someone not in the accounting field :) Thank you for your feedback I appreciate it!
I'm an HIM too, and i work outside my major in business development and i've been thinking lately of getting an MBA. But i have an opportunity to study accounting online as BA. Do you think its a good idea to start fresh again or just get an MBA?
I am working on betting my CPA but I'm torn between public accounting and managerial accounting. Do you have any suggestions?
+gabby If you like routine, having your own space, going to the same office each day and growing your knowledge of one company, managerial accounting would be a good route to go. If you like to change things up, be at different offices every few weeks and see different companies, public accounting would be good. Just know that public accounting requires more than 40 hours from Jan - April normally and sometimes throughout the year later on. Some managerial accounting jobs may call for overtime but I would say those jobs are the exceptions. Hope this helps!
Yes this really helps. Thanks!
did you work during college? I am worried that i dont have legit work experience during college and it will look bad in interviews for internships
