For all the youngens out there who don’t know, this is NOT the first time tropicanas roofs been ripped off by a hurricane. Around 20 years ago it happened while there were people waiting the storm out inside. Thankfully no one was injured, but they spent the night terrified and wet. Guess the repair was more of a hail mary patch up than it was an actual repair to ensure it would survive a hurricane. I have to look it up if it’s happened over the past 20 years. I just remember when it happened then. It was a HUGE deal at the time. Especially since the people who were sheltered there *still* were hit by the hurricane they were sheltering from.
@WxChasing you both are excellent working together. Excellent with that drone everywhere. . Been a follower of Jonathan for a long time - Hope channel grows .
Seems that design was doomed to fail from the beginning, fabric in a hurricane zone. The fact the state of Florida chose it for 10K 🛏️ base camp of the Florida Division of Emergency Management is another story in itself.
I’m going to be honest it feels like a setup like they knew that the hurricane was going to be a cat 3 from the get go and they purposely pushed it to be a cat 5 and up to scare people and see how much control they have.

Wait so the roof really was just fabric? They knew this? Like this isnt like the Superdome where the roof is an ACTUAL ROOF. Whose idea was it that this could survive 100 mph gusts?
Super Dome was fabric too. "The Superdome was used as a "shelter of last resort" for those in New Orleans unable to evacuate from Hurricane Katrina when it struck on August 29, 2005. During the storm, a large section of the outer covering was peeled off by high winds. The photos of the damage, in which the concrete underneath was exposed, quickly became an iconic image of Hurricane Katrina. A few days later, the dome was closed until September 25, 2006." They could make it out of anything, but most materials, in that size, won't stand up perfectly hurricane winds.
In 1968, I was 4 years old growing up in Philadelphia. My parents decided to take the family to the new Spectrum arena to see the Ice Capades show. It was a windy afternoon. The wind blew on us as Mom held my hand running across Pattison Avenue. We walked into the Spectrum and down the aisle towards our seats. Next thing I remember were black tiles flying around like bats. People were running back up the steps towards the exits. The roof basically was blowing off the Spectrum.

Yes, and no worries of sending projectiles into the area in a storm. Fabric roofs for storms are common, they're to keep fans dry and cool in the tropical environment. Failure is an option, they're cheap to make and replace.

It's designed to fail and leave the structure intact, Far cheaper to recover than replace a hard roof. The stupidity come in when placing all of their emergency response lodging inside it.
I'm not surprised that happened. I've been there during a regular thunderstorm and saw the roof waving a lot. I'm more surprised that someone thought that was the best place to shelter first responders.

What an epic fail. The amount of lack of common sense is staggering why would you put a shelter in stadium with a flimsy roofing? It’s same thinking behind building wooden houses in a Hurricane prone areas instead of concrete. The disaster risk management is a disaster itself.
Concrete costs more, takes longer to build and is also not hurricane proof. Concrete also creates unique hazards during the storm and is harder to clean up.

I am so so sorry for the loss of life and homes that these areas have experienced. Why not put the electricity supply in the ground? It seems like these storms are just going to keep on coming sadly.
Do you know how much more structural support and money, is needed to cover a stadium? And even that could have collapse (catastrophicallly) in a hurricane. Everybody is so smart, with stuff they are not paying for.
@jimkear6749 we studied Architecture. We know. They are getting a new $1.3 billion stadium in 2028 anyway. This event should teach them what not to do again. Or maybe not to save money and have it happen again. The latest renderings for the new stadium showed it having a fixed glass roof and large windows and porches spanning across the walls, allowing natural daylight to pour in while keeping the stadium climate-controlled. We'll see if they redesign it now.
Sure are alot of dunces in here that think a hurricane peeling a steel roof off like sardine can and throwing it around tbe city is a better idea. Having a canvas roof is far easier and cheaper to replace, and far less deadly flying into buildings, when, not if, a Hurricane rips it apart.
It's terrible what a storm like this can do to you! No question about it! But what I don't understand is that you in the usa don't put your power supply, cable-tv, telephone under the ground like in europe. here we also have a power failure, but it is usually back after 1 hour. and everything works again !!! That will be costly. Water ingress (probably with a fair amount of sea spray derived salt content) is going to lead to significant, and persistent corrosion issues.
