Congrats 👏 An excellent memory jogger.
I signed up for the Army in 1964 down English street .
I had my last cup of tea and a mars bar in the Golden Arrow café at the White Sands before i took off for my adventure at 16 years of age. I pay a return visit incognito now and again.
Thanks for this wee gem 👍

Some disturbing nostalgia, and historical knowledge for me, James Stuart. All the same: Thank you.
As mentioned in a previous comment to you, I resided in Dumfries with my Family (Friday 10 April 1995 until 8 June 1990). During my time there, working with British Gas (Heathhall Depot), I was responsible for mustering and deploying all Gas Board Emergency Personnel during the long night of the Lockerbie Disaster (Wednesday 21 December 1988). A night replete with horrific, soulful, disturbing remembrances. Rest in Peace.
On a lighter note: All the best. Stay free. Rab 💔 🌠

Wow - so many memories - my father's family moved down from Falkirk in the mid-50s. They set up home in Priestland's Drive. My grandfather was Burgh Welfare Officer, my grandmother was a Ward Sister at the old Old Hospital. I went to Primary School in the Minerva Building - the old Loreburn Primary School, latrer went next door to Dumfries Academy!!
To the left of Burns; Statue (on the image) was the site of the original Greyfriars Church - where Robert the Bruce killed Sir John Comyn.

My ancestor, William Graham, father of 4, born in 1778, stole a black horse in Dumfries in 1814 and was caught trying to sell it in Durham. He was given '14 Years Across the Seas; to NSW. His family joined him in 1819. He had been granted land, bought even more and his farmer sons all received land grants. William became a landlord, leasing hundreds of acres out to later arrivals. He was a Constable in the Illawarra District and his son James became second Mayor of Shoalhaven District. William is buried near James' substantial country house "Graham Lodge" (all covered in Ann Pulvertaft;s book "Given a Chance:.)
