@@PurpleElla i have had a lot of neglect in my childhood and also as an adult, which is annoying to have to say because ..adults shouldnt need help with pretty much everything, i type fine and i am mobile, i am intelligent, but when i try to go outside of my house everything goes horribly wrong, the anxiety i feel is debilitating, and then being 6'4 laying on the floor at a walmart trying not to throw up and pass out makes it even worse. i want a dog, but i live with my sister who doesnt want a dog and also doesnt want to help me that much (she has her own struggles and it bothers me to always be dependent on others) but i was wondering what do the autistic people do to not un-train their dog? because i would not be able to not pet and play with and cuddle my dog all the time, i am utterly isolated from other human beings, i get so lonely but trying to make friends is impossible because regular human beings will only "go so far" with your needs and then when they reach that point they just leave, they cut you out of their life because its to much work having you around, dogs love being around you all the time

As an autistic who has never been able to relax around dogs because they're so invasive of my personal space and overstimulating, this was super interesting! It's really cool to know that there are autistics who can benefit so much from dogs!
Interesting to hear you say this. It really depends on the dog you get. I had an amazing dog I called my therapy dog but have generally been turned off to dog energy since he died. I love cats for that reason...they're so chill and generally not in my face/space all the time. I've been wanting a dog again recently. But I can relate to what you're saying because that in your face asking what's next is overwhelming for me to think about. But wow would my dog calm me down. He was the best shelter dog ever! Thanks for sharing. You named how I've felt. 💓
I love dogs but prefer cats for a 'pet
I’m an autistic person who benefits from a service dog. The issue I have with these kinds of programs is they train for children only. My first dog River was trained by a program and my next dog because I’m an adult has to be trained by me. And I’m about to start doing that

My service dog is both autistic alert and medical alert I suffer from adrinal disorder and autism she helps me so much
I am so shocked how helpful my bfs dog has been for me. She can sense I am having a meltdown before I really grasp it and she will lay on my feet and force pets which helps so much. she also sometimes wants to lay with me if I am really shut down and depressed. I was nervous as she is a hyper blue heeler but she has been more helpful than I thought. My bf got her at few months old. she has been learning so much from our experiences. She knows no licking my face or hands when I am having a meltdown now, she used to think it was helping. I swear she can tell all thats going on with me. It is so nice. I have had much less severe meltdowns that at max are just crying now. I don't hit myself or anything now. I swear she has helped so much. my bf when im mid meltdown and cant do it for myself teaches her how to react during. I also try to teach her things myself when i am not mid meltdown. its crazy how fast she has learned. I think because of her breed its been easy for her to learn and be loyal and helpful as blue heelers want a job from the owner and get bored without that task.
im currently trying to save and raise money for my own service dog here in the states! i love hearing about new charities, it is so inspiring to hear about! I also am interested in owner training and am looking for as many resources regarding that topic 💗
I just got my puppy the week of Christmas. I have NEVER had a dog, I'm 41 and disabled in multiple ways.
I started off watching RUclips a few days prior to picking up my puppy. I taught my puppy how to follow several commands in 2 days. I taught her sit, down, up, and leave a treat alone in just 2 days!!! I have been training her all on my own by I structures on RUclips trailer, Zak George! Amazing techniques in positive re-enforcement training only.
She is now potty trained, crate trained, and can do all these commands plus more now. I may need to get assistance by other professionals as I progress her training in next couple of years to get her certified assistance in a few specific tasks.
I have autism and got a dog not one of those dogs tho just a dog husky/akita mix but he is so in turned in to my emotions he has honestly done so much to help me without any proper training to do so. I would love to get him some of that training I live in the UK Scotland and would like any information on it thanks
Even if you are an autistic adult, a service dog may be beneficial. I am in my 50's and I now have the assistance of a wonderful Airedale. He is task trained and I will never go anywhere without him. I have severe anxiety in public amongst other things.
im rescuing untrained dogs from the local kennels, the most i can do is teach them to sit however its great support just having a dog around, we autistics struggle making friends, having a dog is the next best thing and the dog wont judge us they just accept us for us.
I'm waiting for an Autism diagnosis but have been thinking about an assistance dog as my pets really help at home, thank you for this video it's really helpful, i would love to know what kind of access the dog would get like the laws on where they are allowed in public etc

Thanks to the guest speaker! I loved dogs as a kid, all animals. Because they were easier for me to understand than people! And like you said, you can talk without them talking back and they like to hear the sound of your voice! Although the cynical background noise in my brain is just going oh. Great. One more service I can't get in the US or for an adult. Yay. But glad for the people getting helped by this! Animals are very sensitive and good at intuiting our emotional states, sometimes better than we can. I also think that the act of taking care of animals is itself therapeutic.

i also love it that you are able to live a self confident life missing a tooth! so many people need to get over being driven to have the perfect smile........and it is so sad that people have to live with embarrasement because of their teeth one of the things that made me subscribe to your channel is seeing your beautiful smile with a missing tooth!
I lost my dog he was old he had to be put down but that day changed my life, I just wasn't able to replace him bcoz I trained him to my needs without people realising it.... I've never been the same again it's been 4 years now.... And I cry so much bclz he was my life.... And I wish o could have another one now I'm ready to have another one. I'm very lonely and I'd like another dog but a special dog like that so I can be and feel safe again when I go outside on my own
Tell your own Spirit exactly what you want. Write down the qualities you want in another dog. Your dog WILL find you! Sending you love. I lost my dog some years ago and it was so painful. Ask for your dog to just show up easily and for you to know it's meant to be yours as soon as you see it. It will happen! 💓

It's so true. I have 2 dogs that help me. My Mom had a dog that would know when she would have a seizure.
Wow what an amazing interview literally took the thoughts out of my head and put them in a charity. My child has undiagnosed autism she is 11 I think we are on the cusp of an official diagnosis this is all relatively new to us our old has been her lifeline and support for the past four years they bond they have has grown organically it is through my dog that I as her mum started to recognize artistic traits it is through their love for each other and the calming affect that he has upon her that has allowed her to achieve daily tasks Such as getting into school he comes in our car she lives in the boot and hugs him morning and lunchtime she has never been able to go to the park by herself she has felt confident enough to go with a friend and our dog recently A scary yet very proud moment for us. I have been looking into assistant dogs for her and him as I feel through his anxiety without her he may feel more relaxed I had a lightbulb moment at the few months ago where I am looking into training him myself to be a service dog for her. There is so much to be gained I would like to see service dogs for autism become the norm. Well done to you both for all that you do to raise awareness. I have learned a lot from this talk thank you
me and my younger brother are both autistic, he's got the aspects that he could benefit from a dog and i don't need one as much, but i absolutely adore dogs and he absolutely is terrified of them so it really does start from whether or not they want a dog😅😅
I have ADHD, Autism, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Anxiety and minor mobility issues. I get very anxious in public places, feel closed in, have to sit in a coffee shop or in a restaurant so I can see the door. I struggle to make friends and also keep them which is sad to say the least. When I struggle with my mental health I can start to self harm using my nails. Living with multiple conditions both mental and physical along with the various meds I take, makes for a challenge each and every day. Sadly due to my mental health my marriage broke down this week and I have been admitted to a mental health unit. It’s given me time to reflect and ponder the future after I leave here. I’m considering applying for a therapy dog as having had a dog while I was married I know how much they can sense when you’re struggling. It is a rabbit hole that I am wary to go down, but once I’m settled in my own place, I think a therapy dog would be a right move. I would be relocating to the Lakes so he or she would have an amazing life.

I have always wanted an assistance dog. There are so many things I struggle intensely with that a trained dog could help with. And I’ve always been a dog lover, had dogs in my life. My last little guy passed when I was 20 and I haven’t had one since. Sadly an assistance dog will probably never happen for me 😢 but I’m loving finding out all the skills the pups have for helping autistic ppl. ❤
I’ve had dogs that talk back 😂😂😂 I’m autistic and epileptic plus other things and I’m hoping the new puppy we got can be trained to be a service dog 🐕🦺

We got a husky/ heeler puppy when my daughter was 8, long before her diagnosis at 21.The dog was never formally trained but they formed such an intense bond that the dog instinctively knows exactly what the girl needs and exactly when. It is really quite impressive. Now the dog is geriatric, and we are already planning options for when the inevitable transition happens.
My puppy rufus is not trained for autism but he knows when I'm having melt downs he lies on me very still and stays quiet. Amazing how they can sense when you need them and know what to do with out being trained .

I really enjoyed your video. I realized I could benefit from a service dog when I found myself on the verge of a meltdown in public and a dog approached me basically dissolving the meltdown into nothing, I didn't even know that could happen. But here in the US, obtaining a service dog is insane expensive :(

I am in the process of trying to get and train a service dog in portugal. Sadly there is only 1 association that provides service dogs (for any disability) so i am still in the waiting list. Trying to see if i am able to do the process without the fuding of the association’s
I am just looking forward having a PTSDxAutism Service Dog, there is a chance it would have a massive benefit and independence that I’ve never had as an adult Autistic Person.

my 4yo son is autistic (actually my3yo daughter and myself are also autistic) and it breaks my heart to see him struggling so hard. I'm hard of hearing so looku=ing into a hearing service dog for me bc its not my childrens place to be my ears .
After quite a bit of research I think a service dog would be really helpful. It's not really something my parents have considered because I'm a bit older and seemingly "cope" with most situations but honestly I can barley leave my house outside of going to school because one, school exhausts me and is really taxing on me, it feels like I'm surviving and not living and 2 because of how overwhelming everything outside of even my bedroom is. My mum always complains and tells me I stay in my room too much, saying that she's worried for my mental health because being in my room all the time is bad for you, and I know that's true enough but it's just so hard, Heck I can't even brush my teeth consistently because it feels like my tongue gets set on fire.
I think a service dog for my autism would help so much, but I don't think I could even suggest one to my parents for multiple reasons
1. They could just see it as me making an excuse to get a dog. There's been this thing in my family where my mum and sisters always wanted a dog, but my dad kept on refusing. It took about 16 years of my parents being married to move from stick insects to a cat (who we had to put down on April 7th 2022 iirc, RIP Blossom) we did get a kitten after that because my mum couldn't stand living without a cat (I did go off on a little tangent, sorry)
2. We just got a kitten, and my parents probably wouldn't want 2 animals living in our house. A dog is a lot of work after all, and my dad already doesn't want one.
3. If I would get one, my little sister has this thing where she NEVER leaves animals alone. Whenever she's near our kitten she'll pick him up like, 10 times in just a minute, and constantly fawns over him and treats him like a baby. When I tell her to put him down she tells me to shut up and stop butting in (as usual) I dread to think what could happen if we even got the dog, especially when I needed it (she's literally obsessed with dogs)
4. There was a 4th one but I forgot it eueuh
If anybody has any tips on how I could introduce my parents to the idea or just any tips in general, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Sounds like you've done a lot of conscientious thinking and discovery about an assistance dog, which is a great start. 👍
For toothpaste, I switched to one that doesn't have sulfates in it; sulfates make it foam more and feel like it burns my mouth. I'm currently doing okay with the brand hello (kids strawberry with fluoride, but check the ingredients on each product) and brush more often than I used to, usually in the afternoon because I don't have the energy at bedtime. And I buy kid's sized toothbrushes to fit my hand and mouth more comfortably. (I'm in my forties.)
It sounds to me, a stranger on the internet, like your family isn't respecting boundaries and you're working extra hard to be amenable about it, which is similar to my experience. That can be stressful and draining, and it's cool that you've been listening to your body and thinking about what helps you (quiet time in your room), and how an assistance dog might help you.
Some ideas for the next step, if you'd like to try any of them:
Do you have doctor, counselor, or other healthcare provider you trust who you can talk to about your needs, how draining it is to keep the schedule and commitments expected of you (instead of developing your own), and your family dynamic (parental pressure and sibling disregarding your comfort and the cat's)?

Would you like to contact the charity, Dogs for Autism, (or a similar one, even if it's not autism-specific closer to where you live), to talk to someone about your needs and how your family interacts with those needs? Calling or messaging them isn't a commitment, just another form of exploration, and it sounds like they're familiar with helping autistic people and their families in ways that reduce stress. It's sometimes hard to listen to the people closest to us, and it helps to have allies help us communicate with loved ones.

@@gamewrit0058 thank uu I rlly appreciate this, I’ll def think and maybe act on it in the future- tho I fear if I tried to talk to my parents (especially my mother) then she’d make it about her- for example sometimes I go nonverbal (I’ll use today as an example)
I was at a theatre group all day rehearsing so I was tired and thus didn’t talk much in the car home (basically reached my daily word limit) and she got angry at me and went “are u rlly ignoring me” etc and “I’ve just went out and bought you all of this new school clothes and now you’re doing this? Why do I bother” and she just tries to guilt trip me abt it and I feel rlly bad
I was only diagnosed early this year so I don’t really have any professional I know about that I can just talk to (tho the uk has done this thing where they’re giving like autistic kids a checkup or something so I’m going to that, if the opportunity arises I could probably talk then)
But yes thank u so much for this suggestions, I’ll definitely check out the toothpaste stuff

I hope that there could be a way of training the assistance dog to judge whether or not people or situations are truly safe. As an autistic person who cannot readily intuit someone’s motivations or character or pick up on some potentially quite dangerous situations this would be extremely helpful.

The dogs belong to the charity, and when the dog is retired it can either be returned to the charity to find a retirement home, or if appropriate it can stay with the handler as a pet. The handler pays day to day costs for the dog like food, and medical care.
@@PurpleEllaHow do the dogs handle being retired to their retirement home? Asking because I know most dogs bond very strong to one family, if not at least one person, so how do they handle being removed from their previous home?
I'd love this, however I'd want to be much more involved in the upbringing of any dog we welcomed into our home than seeing them once or twice a week for the first couple of years, and I'd want the dog to be ours - not the charity's "property". I'd also want to ensure the puppy was from a rescue - not bred specifically! I'm not sure if that's even possible.
Lastly, I'd like to know if it's possible for a dog to work with autism and a disability...?
All of those things are possible by owner training - check out pawsable who support owner training.
This sounds wonderful, however; we contacted Dogs for Autism in April 2021 and were told that we'd need to attend an information session but these weren't happening due to covid-19. We've heard nothing since sadly.

In Canada there is, due to the “assistance animal” laws vs “service dog” laws in the US not sure about other countries ❤️

you cant have a service cat but you could have a emotional support cat they dont have public access rights but they are allowed to live in places that normally arent allowed to live and they have to be prescribed by a doctor (in the us that is)

Could I get help training my own dog? I often have difficulty going out in public and find taking my dog with me helps greatly but I'm not allowed to take him everywhere with me and he could do with some training

Both, however I think it is very important to work closely with a therapist/councillor/psychologist etc and trainer because late diagnosis leaves decades of room for horrible coping mechanisms/masking and stimming that is different than what might be seen in someone with early diagnosis/has had an assistance dog before

I have Aspergers Syndrome. Medical people have determined that I am VERY HIGH-FUNCTIONNG. This must be true, because I taught myself how to use a Mac. I taught myself how to use Windows Vista; so when Windows Seven came out, I was in Hog Heaven, lol! Then Gates BLEW it with EVERY Operating System since! This is why I'm not a dyed in the Wool Mac User!
