❤❤planted 42 Asparagus and I had 7 Blueberry bushes and just got 6 small ones from a farmer for $7 each !! So excited!! I'm planting in large containers and mineral tubs for now. Moving soon to our small 2& 1/2 acre homestead. Got 30 Comfrey root cuttings & a crown from y'all last year and they all came back up but 4. They are getting so big and pretty! I gotta get more because I'm gonna put them everywhere! Have a blessed day y'all!
That is awesome! Be sure to take that comfrey with you!
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Yes sir that is the plan! I have in pots for now some with my fruit trees!
I wish I could have blueberries! I grew up on the east coast and blueberries grew like weeds. Now I’m in the Midwest and my native soil ph is 8. I tried the last couple years to fight nature and grow a few bushes in a small spot in my garden, but they struggled and hated life. I finally pulled them out this spring and put them in a pot. I replaced them with blackberries, which thrive here.
But I miss picking buckets of blueberries like I did in my youth.
Try making a high fungal environment for those blueberries and see if it doesn’t work out for you.
Thank you for this advice! I'm about to put in some blueberries.
My great grampa and grampa's farms in Wisconsin had Saskatoons growing along the drive. I was told they taste similar and more tolerant of the alkalinity.
DON'T FORGET to protect all saplings this year from cicadas. 2 species are coming out this year and can destroy saplings. Last time both species were out at the same time, Thomas Jefferson was president. We're using a simple netting. We'll have to hand pollinate, but it beats losing trees.
Great video Billy.
Thank you for the great tip Vernon!
Back in my mom’s day the back roads or as you might say the country. There were always fruit trees and blue berries, huckleberries, walnuts grown close to the roads. Growing up we always went to the back roads for fruits and nuts. I wish the same. Today but all that has changed😢
I know exactly what you mean, my friend!
Even in the city. I remember walking past a lady's peach tree. She always let us have anything that fell on the sidewalk. This was early 80s.
I planted daffodils around my trees and beds to keep the voles from decimating my plants. So far it’s working.😊
That’s what I’m talking about Karen!
Pimp Daddy your place is going to be SO BEAUTIFUL this season! Congratulations!!
Thank you very much!
Lucky you regarding critters. The deer where we live (central Slovakia) regularly decimate our blueberry bushes; they seem to have a special penchant for them! Can’t wait to have the money saved for the front fencing and gate. Until then... let’s pray and hope! ;)
Sorry to hear that my friend!
I use cardboard also I think the earthworms like it
They do indeed!
👍🏼 If you wanna get fancier Double-deck your bulb beds by planting large bulbs like daffodils 5 to 6 inches deep, then add a few
inches of soil and plant a layer of smaller bulbs like grape hyacinth or crocus above them at 2 to 3
inches.
That sounds like a brilliant idea!
Get Loose or get lost … AMEN to that. I ain’t got time to mess around.
Beautiful view of the mountains.
Thinking about all the long driveways I see as I drive all over the country, and how many of them run along a property line, with just a little strip of open ground like yours...and NOTHING growing in them but grass and weeds! You've got a crazy amount of food producers thriving in a place most people barely even see as they roll down their driveway!
Those are some pretty solid points, Jim!
I bought 4 blueberry bushes (2 each of 2 varieties) last year for $60 a piece, and then got notice I had to move off the farmland I was renting. So they ended up living in buckets for the end of summer and all winter long, thankfully they appear to have survived so far and new buds are growing larger by the day currently. Now to figure out where to plant the things where I live now, with much worse soil and light availability. Thinking about using tires to raise them up a little bit and give an area to toss fertilizer and acidifier more directly...
Sorry for the bad luck.
Just bought 5 different kinds of fruit tree 5'+ for under $19. ea. 😃
I can’t let my chickens free range but they have a very large fenced in area. I’m going to make a food forrest on part of it. Starting with blueberry and raspberry bushes. Thank you all for the inspiration!
That is awesome!
I come along beside you and agree the Lord will make your plantings bountiful and delicious.
How do you keep your blueberries alive without amending the soil? You do t have them near pine trees. I have tried growing them several times, but they always die on me.
We don’t worry about pH so much around here. We’re more concerned about a higher fungal component in the soil. That works out for us!
Sleeping on it is a great piece of advice. I follow what I call Slow Down Theory. Plants are very forgiving.
That’s what I’m talking about!
Do you test for ph ? My blue berries would no produce any berries.
Instead of pH, we worry about putting a high fungal component into the soil. That seems to work out much better for us.
Great tip on sleeping on your design. I can’t imagine paying $20+ for a blueberry bush. 7-12$ in our area if you’re patient. Hope your soil is super acidic blueberries are not hardy if ph isn’t right. 4.5-5.5 is preferred. Deer nip our blueberries, but they definitely aren’t a favorite. Like the layout by the road. Good luck!
I got blueberries for 15 lol
That’s what I’m talking about!
They're cheap in sw washington too. Trees are expensive though
This is exactly how i garden. 👍
Great minds think alike!
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Right !
NC here. Native Texan. ✌️
Great job billy i saw it on the video where you were just getting started fabulous progress
Thank you very much, my friend!
Great one, I have been thinking that I need shade on my driveway because that way I would enjoy walking to get the mail the 2000 feet. Was thinking about what to plant as it basically faces South. A little food forest along the driveway could work.
Do you have any concerns about soil PH for the blueberries? I've always heard they prefer a more acidic soil, so I stress trying to amend and contain them in beds because my ground soil PH is around 6.5-7.
I have been using the cardboard around all my apple trees and berry bushes
It definitely works!
The master at ?work? I think you enjoy too much to call it work. LOL.
Thanks again for the guidance and inspiration to food independence. It's needed now more than ever.
God bless you all.
Thank you so much, my friend. This is definitely not work to me!
Have you heard the talk about "forever chemicals" being in card board? I'd be interested to hear what you think about it. It makes me think since I use cardboard so much around my food crops.
How far away do things like clover, yarrow, and comfrey need to be from little fruit trees and berry bushes?
With the work that you had put into the soil does it drop the pH enough? I was wondering if the runoff from the gravel increases the pH there.
Love the comment on planning on paper first! I'm a landscape designer and installer and that is the biggest time, money, and headache saver!
Ps love all the rest of this info too!
Thank you so much, my friend!
I agree with planting berries and nuts, especially considering those are the most expensive things you can buy. Vegetables are still basically cheap.
That is a very good point my friend!
Love blue berries! I have to get some more! Blessings my friend , thank you!
Another great video! Y’all are always bringing it.
Thank you so much, my friend!
Good planning techniques, brother.
Thank you so much, Dwight!
thanks, I plan to put blueberries in this year thanks again
You gotta love planting a superfood Tammy!
Hey PIMP, what do you think about Down to Earth 4-3-6 acidic mix? meaning the necessity of it?
I’m not much of a fan for anything that doesn’t promote soil life.
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Billy, please a little further why not use the acidifiers for soil... if bluebarries need acidic soil? Thank you.
I love it! Why waste time and resources amending the soil for every plant? Most should thrive first, then you can fertilize when and if you mulch. Especially if the mulch contains compost.
I like the way you roll, my friend!
have you looked at the edible nitrogen fixing tree Yellow horn ( Xanthoceras sorbifolium ) edible leaves , flowers and nuts
I would love to experiment with one, but I need to do more research.
I do the stand back and think about it...drives my husband crazy! Haha
Have you ever grown serviceberry?
Yes, indeed! We have a few near the top of the driveway. You could’ve knocked me over with a feather when I saw how much they’re charging for those things these days.
Beautiful! Great stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
What do think of asparagus just beyond the daffodil/garlic ring?
That is a genius idea! We have it planted in certain spaces in between the blueberries… but I think I’d like your design idea more.
We always enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them. This is timely since I bought some blueberry bushes from KSL yesterday. Thank you for sharing and God bless y'all!
Thank you so much for watching and responding my friend!
Have you ever considered writing a “how-to” manual for permaculture?
I’m definitely working on a different kind of book… but part of it is how to.
Awesome
drive by picking
I may have accidentally started something here!
happy gardening!
Thank you very much, Kathleen!
❤LOVE BLUEBERRIES!!!
They are definitely my favorite, Berry!
What is the purpose of the cardboard?
Weed suppression and worm food.
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 ok, thank you.
What's your soil pH?
Maybe because the bushes are larger they will do better? I don't what bone sauce is that he is talking about either.
We never measure pH here. We only measure soil life
PH can vary greatly between millimeters.
I believe the bone sauce is a deer repellent
@@GrowWithGordon.JamesPanyan bone sauce is a sex lubricant 👍
