      It's a Ukrainian 24 hour ration you dunce, not Russian.

    Ukrainian military needs to prioritize in the face of ongoing war - either improve severely outdated armaments and lack of thereof OR field rations. Considering that many folks in Ukraine are poor by any developed Western country's standards, to them rations are adequate enough. Also areas where soldiers are stationed (with few exceptions) are fairly well populated. There is an opportunity of trade with locals. Among which are many sympathizers whom bring fresh/hot home cooked meals to soldiers posted near-by. Care packages from home play a big role, people understand that country is not in the good place.
    I saw some folks comparing Ukrainian MREs with Russian ones. You have to consider that Russia has vast oil and gas reserves that were funding it's military for decades. Ukraine does not have any large export revenue inflow other than SOME agricultural and industrial. Plagued by sever corruption withing the government and military, defense budget was being reduced and plundered for the last 20+ years. Ukrainian defense budged has not seen single increase since 1992 and until 2014.

      @scottparrish8566 6 лет назад

      There isn't a whole lot of difference between cat food and pate other than the quality of the ingredients. At the low end of the edible spectrum we have mechanically and chemically separated meat (stuff you cant normally get off the bones). The next stage is cat food... the stuff thats left over after mechanical and chemical separation and offal that humans in the area won't eat.

    Great review Kiwi Dude! Looks like we've been in a similar situation as far as making videos lately. I think I've turned a corner and it looks like you may have too. Looking forward to seeing more vids coming out soon. My backlog also includes one of these Ukrainian ones from Gundog. While I'll be late joining in on the fun, I hope to get my review up soon as well. And thanks for explaining your little injury. I was going to jokingly ask if it was related to a ration heating stove incident. Turns out to have been pretty close to that! Hope everything's going well with you and the family. Happy Holidays!

    The solidification you see is probably due to gelatin from the meat. It's an incomplete protein which makes up connective tissue in tougher cuts of meat (probably what was used for these forlorn little meals).

    In the novel TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST, the author wrote that his ship met a Russian ship during the 1830's that had come to Mexican California to collect beef fat. He said the entire crew were crazy about eating it and could make a variety of different dishes from fat. He also said their clothes, heavy boots, hair and skin were constantly soaked in fat without ever washing during the weeks they were together in harbor. I guess it's still part of their culture today, with the exception that their hygiene is much improved:)

    Another awesome video, Kiwi Dude. I have to admit that this meal seemed the most daunting out of all the ones you've reviewed (excluding the vintage C-rats and stuff). If I ever had to eat that beef, I'd leave it in the can. It looks horrifying when poured out. XD

    • @KiwiDudeMRE
      @KiwiDudeMRE  8 лет назад +1

      +FelisDestructicus The best way to categorise this ration is 'body fuel'. I've no doubt it'd keep you going with energy. It falls short on morale-boosting items (chocolates etc..) though.

    G'day Kiwi Dude. Thanks for another interesting review. No worries about not making videos as frequently as previously mate. Family always comes first. We will miss seeing the Boss as often but will always be a treat to see her now and then. Nice she goes to school so close to home.
    After seeing that review I am feeling like I want to try some buckwheat porridge some day. The beef did not look too appetizing.
    It reminded me of the ALPO dogfood we gave our dog. Now mind that i thought ALPO smelled not too bad. hehe
    I agree that it seems the quality control was a bit off in that ration. I have never seen potted meat that runny either.
    As you and GD said......if i was cold and hungry after being out on guard duty for 4 hours I am sure I would scarf it down.
    Kiwi Dude I don not think I have ever seen an IDF ( Israeli Defense Force ) Ration. Have you ever done one?

    It was the old MRE according to Soviet norms. At that time, no one thought that the Russians were capable of such meanness and would attack Ukraine, so the army was underfunded and not reformed.
    The war with Russia forced us to urgently rebuild the army. Therefore, you have the opportunity to review the new Ukrainian MRE. Since the beginning of the war in 2014, we have been constantly updating the composition of the MPE and in 2016 approved the final version with a chemical heater. And in 2020, in addition, adopted a variety of MRE designed for one meal.

    • @KiwiDudeMRE
      @KiwiDudeMRE  8 лет назад +1

      +Luke Dunton Yeah, I don't want to gripe about it too much. It's certainly no French RCIR, but then again - Ukraine is no France. If it comes down to budget, which this ration screams, I think it's a false-economy. Maintaining the morale, focus and productivity of troops through quality rations would more than make up for the additional cost in my opinion. Still, really interesting to see the different approaches taken by various militaries. The Boss has seen this review and I didn't cop any flak for her missing it ;-)

  • @oldfrend
    @oldfrend 8 лет назад +1

    Kiwi - to open that can you should bend the tab much farther forward initially; like, past the rim, as far as it will go without popping it off. doing so levers open the front half of the lid so that it's much easier to open the rest.

    • @KiwiDudeMRE
      @KiwiDudeMRE  8 лет назад

      +oldfrend Thanks. I think I was attacking it way too hot, with not enough 'towel' to gain purchase on it. You're absolutely right though, the tab wasn't bent far enough forward.

    First I just wanted to say that we enjoy watching your videos. Some interesting things have come out of the mre's. We have been wanting to try them but a couple things have been holding us back right now. One is the cost. I have done alot of research on them and am very intrigued. There is quite a variety out there. The second and the biggest for me is that I am diabetic. Thankfully it is controlled by diet and exercise. During my research I couldn't really find the nutritional information on them and that concerns me. Do you have any advise on them on where I should look?

      +Squirmy Whale Not something you'd really look forward to, but I guess things take on a different light when extremely hungry. I've heard that the Ukraine may now be receiving some U.S. MREs.

    • @mowtow90
      @mowtow90 8 лет назад +1

      +Squirmy Whale Well, its called "Budget ration". Government doesn't give a sh***t about the army , they just give you enough so you won't starve to death. I don't know how much this cost the Ukrainian government , but by the looks of it , its going to be better then the new Bulgarian ration. The government decided to rapidly reduce food spending , so now each soldier have to make do with ration , that cost 5 USD/24 hours...

    Being from the age of C-Rats, if I happened upon some of these while moving through an area I would pick some up. Our meat wasn't much different. It was just compressed into a patty. The breakfast porridge doesn't look that bad to me either. If you are really hungry you will eat anything. True if this was all I had everyday it would grow old quickly, but as a change of pace from Ham and Eggs in a can, which I actually liked, I would hump a few cans, if weight would allow. I enjoy your vids. Thanks.

      +duplessis2006 Not really, but eBay can be a good source. You just need to experiment with the search phrases and it's often not as easy as typing in 'german ration' in those instances 'einmannpackung' will get you further.

  • @Hirobian

    Did you notice the paté slowly changing to a duller grey-meat colour slowly, soon after you opened its can? I think the meat was actually oxidizing or something. Not that it would be a problem right away though. Still quite edible. I suppose the oil in the can was one way to keep the meat from spoiling sooner.
    As for the abundance of sugar, I suppose it was their shortcut of providing any missing carbohydrates in the meals and they might expect the soldier eating the ration to spread the sugar between the porridge, the coffee and the tea. Though straight sugar might pose a problem for individuals whom cannot properly digest or metabolize straight/pure sugar. Although, I don't think they allow diabetic individuals to serve (at least not in the U.S.A. , I don't know about other countries) so that is probably not a problem in the dietary department.

    Nature of the ration seems to be ad hoc and quality control probably suffered.
    I understand that the Ukraine military was not particularly well-equipped so that might be reflected in the way their field rations were assembled. Basically, something for the troops to eat when away from any kind of regular mess facility. Since their soldiers likely won't be going beyond the Ukrainian border, having something to eat was maybe deemed more important than proper nutrition. Certainly better than leaving the troops hungry or forcing them to forage and/or take stuff from civilians in the area.
