Growing up in Cedar Rapids we were exposed to a lot of art and music in school. We took part in many field trips to exhibits and the Paramount to listen to the orchestra play. We were pretty fortunate for that. Grant Wood is so ingrained that he almost seems like a family member when I hear about him. His work always evoked mystery...a story within a story. I think it would be great if they would also do a story on Marvin Cone...his work was just as brilliant in my opinion.
By the way the elephant in the room is grant wood’s amazing and revolutionary abstraction of the landscape into smooth and flowing geometric solids, which goes well beyond "eerie".
I love Grant Wood! By far, my favorite American artist. For those interested, his artwork can also be seen at the Iowa State University library, where he was commissioned to paint several murals depicting the state's industry and history.
The painting has always reminded me of the stories my elder relatives would tell of living during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Grant Wood was a brilliant artist, and whatever his sexuality was definitely told a story of the times he was in. He probably felt very constricted, and his art is a way of showing that feeling.
I love the American Gothic painting and Portrait of Nan. I was honored to know Nan Wood Graham around 1987. When she was in Menlo Park, California. Why not leave Grant Woods personal life out of this.

I always thought American Gothic depicted an unhappy marriage but only because the couple both look so stern.

I'm not sure why "gay" has anything to do with his art.
