      Yes, the weight is incredible. I really don't know, why they keep that in their pocket.
      I also have the 5 string shortscale version of this and it's incredible lightweight. 3.2 kg. I wonder if the 4 string short scales from the EHB series are under 3kgs. But you get no information on that.

      Truly a great bass. Feel free to check out my other videos with the EHB1506MS. I compare him to a Dingwall with Faith no More...and especially my Versus Them Impossible Dreams video shows what a powerhouse this bass is, if the equalizers are not set for comparing reasons to neutral!

      Those are great basses. The Nordstrands are insanly powerful. Keep in mind: Altough it's a fanfret the neck isn't 37". Your string tension on normal B strings is very fine down to G#. But if you have to get lower, string tension could become a problem. But if you are on normal tuning, I would (and have) choose the EHB over every Dingwall.

  • @williambaymont403
    @williambaymont403 4 года назад +4

    a quick question. How difficult is it to fret the first fret of the low B string? I owned a Fanned Fret Dingwall 6 string for a while and the low B was very difficult to fret at the end because I had to twist my wrist significantly to reach it. It was much worse standing up and playing with a strap. I would love to see you play this standing up with a strap since that is usually the way it goes at gigs. thanks.

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  4 года назад +8

      Hi William,
      I tested it for you and yes. I have to twist my angle slightly more than on my Bongo 6 string. It´s not too bad, but noticibale. If you want video evidence, I would ask you, if you don't mind, waiting till tomorrow, because today's the birthday of my son :)

    Eine sehr tolle Review - und noch dazu ein sehr schöner Bass!!!
    Ich habe eine wichtige Frage. Ist der Passive-Mode wirklich "passiv"? Also kann man den Bass auch spielen, wenn die Batterie tot ist oder keine im Batteriefach ist? Oder ist das gekoppelt - sodass dann kein Ton mehr rauskommt?
    Ich überlege, den Bass zu kaufen - habe aber meine Probleme mit dem Active-/Passive. Bestimmt könnte man den konfigurieren lassen, wenn man den Active-/Mode nicht nutzt. Oder würden Sie den für überragend essentiell erachten?
    Liebe Grüße

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  2 года назад +2

      Hallo Konstantin!
      Danke für Deinen netten Kommentar.
      Ja, der Passivmodus ist ein kompletter Bypass, d.h. ohne oder mit leerer Batterie funktioniert der Bass wenn man den Passivmodus anschaltet. Dann hast Du aber nur noch die Tonblende und keinem 3 Band EQ mehr.
      Generell muss ich aber sagen, dass dem Bass und vorallem seinen Nordstrand Tonabnehmern und sehr gut funktionierendem 3 Band EQ ein Aktivmodus gut zu Gesicht steht.
      Aber wie geschrieben...nur Passiv ist kein Problem.

    Which bass is your favorite in your collection? Also, what bass would you get if you were going for versatility?

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  4 года назад +3

      Hi Joe!
      Thanks for your view.
      So...I do have an emotional softspot for the Yamaha RBX1 and 2...those were my main basses for many years. It's hard to pick a favourite because I went for much diversity in pickup configuration and stringcount, that everyone of them is (sometimes vastly) different from the others.
      But I will say, that the Bongo is likely the best bass I have. From a making and a sounding standpoint. It also is by far the most versatile of my collection, because of the excellent 4 band eq.
      BUT the versatility point might change as I will get an american G&L L2000 soon and I am hunting for a Peavey T-40...those two have insane options for tonal versatility.

    • @JoeHeisler
      @JoeHeisler 4 года назад

      Insoma Thanks for the reply! I actually had an American L2000 and really did like it, sadly I sold it a few years ago to help fund my last year of university. I may end up buying another one at some point and I do agree Yamaha make great instruments even at lower prices!

    Which one did you wind up liking better, this model, the EHB-1506MS, or the EHB-1005SMS that I've seen you play on another video? Which one sounds better to you (like maybe on a 1-10 scale rating for each bass) and is the 1005SMS noticeably easier to play having a 2.5 inch to 3 inch shorter scale range?

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  3 года назад +1

      I like them both. The Nordstrands of the 1506 are better for any Metal music, because they are sounding angry.
      So he will get an 10 for metal and a 6 for anything else.
      The 1005 has a more balanced tone and will get an 8 throughout for me.
      Yes, the shorter scale (and the roasted maple neck!!!) are more comfortable on the 1005, but you noticably lose string tension.

    • @lateralus9244
      @lateralus9244 3 года назад

      @@Insoma - Cool, thanks! Unfortunately though, I did not wind up getting either one of those models; they were just too expensive. I wound up getting the Ibanez SR605 5 string bass that's grey with black edges. I was able to get the Nordstrand Big-Breaks with this model and I plan on converting it into a High-Five 5 string--dumping the dedicated low B string for a high C string instead. Then, I am going to use a HipShot Double Stop Bass Extender to get open low E, low D, and low B all on my low E string. I had to buy special string gauges to accommodate all of this. I am very happy with the Nordstrands; I really like their detailed sound articulation. I'm still trying to get used to the uniformed 34 inch scale length though. Thanks!

I was wondering if you could classify what kind of neck profile this bass has because the only thing I dislike about my bass is the D shape. • @Insoma

      Hello! Thanks for watching and commenting!
      Hm...I have to say, that the EHB1506 is very flat on the thumbside. One of the flattest I know of to be honest.
      But don’t throw away your wish for this bass. Sometimes even a thing you dislike on one bass might be comforting in the context of another bass, you know?
      I know the 1506 is rare, but I have seen a lot of 1505 in stores. They have the same profile (just a bit narrower of course). See if you can try one (i always recommend trying before buying) and look if the neck suits you.

    What shape is the neck on this bass? I usually find necks with a shoulder (more of a D shape) more comfortable, does this have any shoulder to it?

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  3 года назад +1

      Hey Jonathan, sorry for making you wait for an answer.
      Yes, the Ibanez has a very flat D shape with shoulders. I can't tell you the exact radius, but its all sleek.
      Sadly I can't share a picture from my basses neck.
      One thing: I can only speak for the 6 string 1500 series. I don't kniw about the neck of the others, but I strongly assume, it's the same D shape with shoulders.

    Hey man good review and cool playing! I want to buy a 6 string and I'm stuck between this Ibanez and a Dingwall Combustion 6, if it's not too much trouble can you tell me how they measure up?

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  4 года назад +5

      Hey thank you! I can measure them for you, no problem. But I can tell by now, that the Ibanez has much less weight and is smaller in every dimension.
      What I can also tell, is that there really is no between them. They are vastly different from feel and sound.
      A quick overview:
      The EHB is more modern built, with lots of bells and whistles like adjustable string spacing, attachable fingerramp, active/passive mode.
      The Nordstrands are a lot better than the Dingwalls, also the EQ.
      The EHB is way more aggressive sounding.
      The Dingwall on the other hand has way more midrange and is therefore much more versatile.
      Also the longer scale provides a way better B and downtuning abilities.
      The EHB is comfortable downtuned to A or G#. The Combustion goes way beyond that.
      Look at my channel...I have comparison videos between the EHB and my NG-3 Darkglass Edition.
      Greetings
      -Robert

    That one has a really amazing tone! Do you still like this instrument? I found it really attractive.
    By the way, is there any noise issue or other hardware problem?
    I heard Ibanez Indonesia have some quality instability, so I would be thankful if I can get your opinion :D

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  3 года назад

      Hey yes, I still love it. Altough one year later I think the fanned fret are rather gimmicky on a 35" scale.
      But the sound is still aggressive and nuanced and clear and gorgeous.
      The electronics and hardware is top notch. And I really haven't heard or experienced any problems with any Indonesian instruments from any brand the last 10 years.
      Of course...if you imagine how far a bass travels and through how many hands it wents before it finishes at your place, things can happen. A roadbump and a cable might come loose and there you have your noise issue. Of course things like this can happen, but they also can occur on a 8000 Euro Fodera.
      The general built quality of woods and electronics are top notch.
      The pickups are dead silent. And to be honest...they are some of the best metal pickups I ever heard.
      That brings me to two downsides I have with the bass. But one is preference, the other very minor.
      The entire bass with its choice of electronics, woods, built and pickups scream "Metal!!". So the pickups - JUST IN MY OPINION - are not as versatile, because they always tend to sound angry and aggressive. It's almost sounding like playing with a pick when I dig more intense with my fingers.Top for Metal/Hard Rock, but for your Lounge/Motown gig on a cruise ship....maybe not.
      The minor issue is that the slanted nut on the c string is razor sharp. I cut my finger bleedingbjust because I had to go to 1st fret C string fast. But you can round the edge with a file in mere seconds...and Ibanez even changed that on the EHB1005SMS. If they changed later built EHB1506MS too, I don't know.

      It is very different. Much more aggressive sounding and way more modern build - better pickups and better bridge. Dingwall has more mids and I think is mlre versatile in sound and also the Dingwall has the longer neck...so for downtuning more than G# you'd have to go with the Dingwall.

      But otherwise a great bass through and through.

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  3 года назад +1

      Oh thank you so much! I really appreciate that :)
      Of course: The Bongo has about 4.5kg (9.9lbs) while the EHB1506MS clocks in at 3.8kg (8.3lbs). So it really is ridiculous lightweight for a 6 string. :)

      My dear Rogelio,
      thank you so much for your kind words. That really means a lot to me. I am playing for 20 years by now, but I practised like a maniac (not Billy Sheehan Maniac...more like Norman Bates Maniac ;) ) in the beginning and then took a long hiatus. I started playing again some time ago and now I am so grateful, that I can share some love for music again.
      As I have a daytime job AND a little son by now, my musictime is somewhat limited. Originally i had not planned to make more reviews. The EHB was just because I was the first person who got the EHB1506MS in his private collection - even some weeks before Reviewmagazines got him.
      But I am waiting now for one more bass (A Yamaha BB714BS will hopefully arrive by the end of september) and then I planned to do a short review of all my (by then) 27 basses. Just a couple of thoughts and some pros and cons to every bass. But I think I will still cover some ground on those basses...especially because I think zhe Flea is criminally underrated, because so people turned off by Made in Mexico and by the road worn look. But...spoiler alert...this bass is insanely good.
      If you want to know some thoughts before or if you have any question to any bass...I`ll be there for you!

      @@Insoma thanks for the answer! I totally understand the review/EHB thing but I'll be waiting for the little review series 😃
      Something similar happened to me,I started playing bass in high school, then college started and just kept playing a few months before I stopped for a long time, more than 10 years, I'm 32 now. And in January this year I just started again and im loving it, practicing every single day, sometimes more than I should haha. This time I think I'm enjoying it more than before, no band pressure or gigs, playing just for fun and for me.
      I asked you about those basses, specially the flea bass because I'm thinking of getting it in the near future, but I've already have two jazz basses (one fretted, one fretless) so I wasn't sure I really needed it, specially considering that I could do electronic upgrades on the ones I already have.
      Thanks again man!

    • @Insoma
      @Insoma  4 года назад

      What I like about the Flea, what I didn't find in other Jazz Basses:
      The neck is a tad thinner in width and thickness. I like to play some fast licks (my favourite band is Dream Theater), so I am used to thin necks and low action and the Flea is hands down perfect in this point.
      The Pickups are real 64 reissues and so they this was the time, Fender made the best pickups. They are punchy, defined, with almost no noise (like other Jazz Basses tend to have).
      And the tonal options are very good, due to the stacked Potis. Both pickups have their own tone and volume knob. This is great.
      I am not kidding...you saw my collection...I don't shy away to spent a little bit more on a bass, but I would choose the Flea Jazz over every other Fender Jazz there is.
      (Not taking fretless into account, where the Jaco Tribute is the defining fretless jazz).

      Hallo Manuel! Gerne doch :)
      Ich hatte ja davor schon einen Dingwall. Und ich muss sagen...der Umstieg hat vielleicht 30 Minuten. Und wenn man hin- und herwechselt ist man nach einem Lied wieder drin. Das ist also wirklich gar kein Problem.
      Ist gibt aber eine Ausnahme. Akkorde in sehr hohen Lagen, also 15. Bund aufwärts können etwas schwierig werden, da die Bünde dann "in die falsche Richtung" fallen und man dann manchmal einen anderen Fingersatz braucht. Ansonsten ist das aber wirklich kein Thema.
