  • Women like Lady B (Cameroon), Amee (Ivory Coast), Lydol (Cameroon), Fatine (Morocco), Meriem (Algeria), Huguette (Burundi) have found in slam poetry art a way to express themselves , an outlet, in a society where they are often told to be silent (and not to speak in public). With critical, sharp and loving analyzes of gender roles, inequality, violence and graceful performances, women lead their audiences into ecstasy and movement. They are very influential and prominent voices on the slam scene in Africa (and beyond). However, their position in the predominantly male scene is not clear.
We interviewed them at slam events where they played an important role on stage: Coupe de Slam 2018 and Slam et Eve in 2019 in N'Djamena, Chad. This film is based on the 2018 interviews. Lady B gave a great performance in the slam cut, Amee and Lydol have been in the scene for a long time and are examples for the younger generation portrayed in this film by Fatine, Meriem and Huguette who all participated in the CASP (Coup d'Afrique de Slam Poésie). This film is the start of a project in which we will represent the women of slam in cinema and in history.
Women inspire other women with their stories and knowledge, and this is went from generation to generation.
Amee tells the story of her intelligent mother who, as a housewife, looked after the children and couldn't do what Amee does now; make your voice heard and share your story with a large audience. By making her dream come true, Amee carries her mother's dream with her.
