@CIVICX3 it's really good in teaching you the general concept really well. Only inaccuracy is that I'm real life the steering wheel Is alot lighter, and the clutch pedal actually has a physical biting point that you can feel. Those things your going to have to adapt to and I guess it also depends on your setup, I have a g29. Otherwise it's actually really really good. The first time I stepped in a car I was able to drive it on the road without a problem, and I had alot of confidence because the car and dimension i guess was really accurate in terms of I knew where my wheels are so I don't drive on a curb, all learned from just playing in beam.
@Probler I came here in hopes for special infos like floating. A shift method where you time the shifting in accordance to speed to shift without the clutch. In real life that is possible if you do it right.
Tip for controller users : Bind your right joystick to the clutch instead of the camera and configure it so that the deadzone goes from the center to all the way up (by default the deadzone will be from all the way down to up - center will be 50% clutch - bad). With Steam Input you can configure your controller even more so that when you're holding one button the right joystick gets mapped to another key, useful if you still want camera controls ("Mode Shift" - look up some guides) You don't really have a lot of "range" but its WAY better than on/off.
Yea, mechanics are very close to real life. I have used BeamNG to get used to manual before my 1st driving lesson ( I have chosen to learn and get my license in manual) and that helped a lot. Also I have used both sim and real life video guides since they are more or less the same. One should keep in mind that manual in BeamNG is way more forgiving then in real life, much harder to stall. However, in real life its much harder to shift into the wrong gear since feedback from the gearbox is significant.
Im a experienced sim racer and drifter but still watched it just to see if he is good with laying it out right great job talks you did better than most with teaching.
For some reason i feel best with X and Z. I even use it in other games. It just feels right also using just my whole left hand. Maybe that's why i feel better.
Also keep in mind that not all transmissions can be shifted super fast. It takes some time to move the gear lever from one position to the other, and BeamNG actually takes this into account. Particularly on old cars and commercial vehicles shifting too fast may damage the synchros. If that happens try to move your shifter a bit slower next time. If you use buttons to shift, hold them down a bit before releasing them.
Holding down the buttons on a controller/keyboard setup actually keeps the shifter in the transitionary period (Neutral) between gears until you release it, then the game shifts to the desired gear. Shift with a press, just keep the clutch engaged a small amount longer than you would usually and you should be fine.
Casually playing beamng for about 2 years most of the time without a shifter, wheel and pedal setup, for manuals I go exactly as showed just inverted LT for clutch to get a more realistic bite point and and RB for brakes at the expense of being uncontrollable on/off brakes in most situations unless ABS is enabled.
1:48 mine's (in german) Alt+gr+shift= clutch Strg/Ctrl+D Gear shift +A gear downshift space=pkbreak and arows=stearing. I have a shifter and a Wheel+Pedals (Hori x-box)
7:45 For some nerdy stuff, the reason *why* gasoline engines help slow down is that if there's no throttle above idle then the car isn't intaking fuel nor air and thus the pistons are being slowed by the vacuum inside the cylinders which slows engine momentum. Diesel engines always intake air so when the compression stroke occurs without fuel, the air acts as a spring that maintains said momentum but commercial vehicles with diesel engines often have their own way of performing engine braking. The one common in American trucks are the Compression Release Brake (AKA Jacob's Brake or Jake Brake) that opens a valve at the top of the compression stroke to release the air and create a vacuum in the cylinders while the one common in Europe is the Exhaust Brake where the exhaust manifolds are closed off, restricting airflow into the engine and generating a vacuum in the cylinders that way.
EDIT: he did actually talk about bite points, but I just give a super detailed version here 😅 Another tip for hill starts (and also general starts), instead of slowly releasing the clutch from fully depressed, first (with handbrake on) bring the clutch up to what is called the “bite point”, which is most commonly halfway up the clutch’s travel, and about the point where the revs start to slowly drop, then add a bit of gas, and then let out the handbrake. So basically, instead of releasing the clutch slowly through the entire range, you only have to release slowly for half the range. It’s not required, but learning bite points and how best to use them is very useful, as they can also be used for downshifting, upshifting extra smooth, and general starts.
A very beginner friendly tutorial! i know how to drive smoothly, i have my license and i recommand this video for everyone who want to start to drive, even in real life! nice of you to say to brake before clutching for the complete stop! nice work bro Precision : In France, our driving test include fuel efficiency and all that, shift up when you hit 2K5 or 3K rev, stop at the right timing with the clutch to save too. And you describe all of that perfectly!
Nah , I'm pretty sure that anyone not subscribed gets ads on the video (cause hes allowed to insert ads now) and he's saying that to annoy others and he probably purposely disabled it for us subbers and members since we follow him. I may be wrong though
They absolutely destroyed shifting in one of the recent updates. They make the syncro's grind and break even with optimal fast shifting. Now you have to granny shift to do no damage to your transmission.
Engine breaking may not be as effective in carbureted cars as the carb is always adding fuel proportional to the air entering (which isnt much since the throttle plate is almost closed). Fuel injected cars can actually completely cut fuel during engine breaking and are much more efficient at engine breaking. There may be a certain rev range where it is more fuel efficient in carbed cars to stay at idle and use the brakes vs being high in the revs engine braking. Of course using the engine as brakes is going to be much better on your rotors but im talking from a fuel saving perspective only.
Didn’t know this. Thanks Widgex :D Going to give this a try in Beam as the Covet felt a little lacking on the engine braking. It was there but not as drastic as it is in many other vehicles.
how i do hill starting: Slowly release the clutch, but not completely. There is a moment where the cars front starts to drive, and then i let go off the brake. If done correctly the car doesnt roll back and you can add gas like usually
I would say the Autobello Piccolina is easier to drive in manual than the Covet because the bite point is lower but the Covet is more like other cars in terms of shifting. Awesome Video.
It’s because of the Pickles blazing 30hp :P Puts it on the top of my favorites list. But true, wanted to go with go with the Covet since it has an extra gear and its now more common with being fwd.
Step one: turn off engine and set 1st gear Step two: turn on engine, so car starts rolling Step three: get some decent revs going and pull it into neutral Step four: wait until revs align with the next gear, then put it into next gear Step five: repeat step three and four until wall
I binding the clutch to the +y axis of my left joystick and added some dead zones so I can still fully turn and disengage the clutch at the same time. Or at least mostly. It gives me some control which is better than on and off
In the past when cars only had drum brakes engine breaking was more important. Drum brakes were prone to overheating on long downhill stretches so you could lose your brakes. I've also heard it said older engines like engine breaking more RPM for higher oil pressure with less fuel apparently it helps with cooling coming down the other side of a long hill.
pro tip for beamng and IRL, press the clutch and brake put it 1 gear and very slowly release the clutch and when the car try to move or turn off u will find the sweet spot for the clutch. Now release the brake and still the sweet spot and the car start moving (srry for the bad grammar but i hope help u)

not sure if this has been explained already, but lower revs = higher fuel efficiency because there are literally fewer instances in which fuel is being injected (once per 720° or 4 revolutions)
I have thought of driving a vehicle with a manual transmission in BeamNG without the assists! The only thing I haven't thought of getting is a parking brake peripheral. Very tempted to buy one, but my wheel peripheral has a button to engage and disengage it. I might get into this soon regardless 😮
Fortunately the nonbrands are cheap and hall effects sensors and quality are good given the price. They use real cheapy handbrakes and modify them. The hardest part is mounting them.
as a controller user with unconventional control scheme using a/b to shift no longer feels intuitive lol still got control over the throttle/brake combined and the parking brake & clutch separately so I can properly drive around.
You have the clutch on the same button I do for controller, it kinda sucks cuz I can’t let the clutch go slow and I end up either squealing my tires a little bit or stall it
Actually, you might want to be careful with engine braking on a petrol car, as this can cause excessive engine wear if you do it too often because petrol cars aren't made to do that. On a vehicle with a diesel engine, it is perfectly safe to engine brake and you don't have to worry about wearing down your engine by doing that.
7:42 in Germany it is normal to learn I think it depends on driving school and country because in the US the main gearbox type is automatic it is not wide spread knowledge 🤔
Lol when I first drove manual irl I never used the gas when releasing the clutch for like the 1st week, I only hit the gas once I was fully off the clutch. lets say I got stuck on a hill once and had to figure it out.

dont forget R for race mode
Always initiate my racemode on the highway.
I dont know why but this is messing up with my IRL manual driving.
1:44 This is LB (Left Bumper) not RB (Right Bumper)
You don't need to add throttle, when you slowly release the clutch the car wll start going forward
On any form of incline, bump, or lower powered vehicle it’ll stall out the engine. So starting without throttle isn’t common practice.
Only in diesel fuelled cars.
this is just a driving lesson with a very fancy animation
Learning how to drive a car by playing a game is wild
1:45 RB stands for Right Bumper.. I think... something's wrong...
wake up noise uploaded
Usually i dump the clutch at redline and no lift shift like that mustang driver
Aim for crowed and you’ve achieved maximum mustang.
*Synchronizer damage intensifies*
i use left joystick as clutch
1:39 does the pickle help with the driving ??
He tells me when to shift.
Bro just designed the most unreliable and EXPENSIVE transmission ever
As a big gear manufacturer I see this as an absolute win.
Clutch dump tutorial when?
Hammer throttle, release clutch.
Fastest tutorial comment ever.
I just powershift every single gear all the time
