    There's an old guy in my neighbourhood on Vancouver Island (Gerald Roberts) that been servicing fishing boats and logging equipment for several decades. He knows everything about Detroits. He rebuilt my 6v53 (marine series)7000 hours ago and it still runs like a clock. It's sad to think what's going to go with him. I visit him, bring him fish and run him to the grocery store when I get the chance. I gotta get up to speed on the mechanics of these awesome engines, Your vids are very helpful. Too bad Gerald isn't a RUclipsr we'd all be subscribed.

    Thank you for showing us how to do this. Like you said alot of people just don't know how to work on these anymore. I'm just blessed that my dad worked on Detroits and industrial diesel engines his whole life. I need as much information as I can get so thank you sir. Have a blessed day!

    I normally do not comment, but Thank You for taking the time to make this calm, focused video. You explain very well (when you are in the mood :-) )and your point that there are not a lot of people around anymore that can teach how to work on these engines is very true. I just purchased a truck with an 8v71N and will get to do the tune up in spring.

    I always preferred the 2 screw racks. I miss these days, working on these machines. You really do have to get a feel for these but once you do it is fairly easy.

      The 2 screws I find easier to adjust... Maybe just cuz I've done more of them.

    My engine is consuming alot of oil in 24 hr run,was thinking of taking out the airbox covers and run the engine and then look at the pistons and try seeing if they are leaking oil,have you tested a engine this way?thanks

    Thanks for the video I have a aluminum 353 out of a gama goat I had stuck injectors I got them free an run the rack just by reading an I got it running good but I have no throttle by the throttle linkage at the governor but I can pull the valve cover off give it throttle with the rack an it throttles up fine I have no clue what the problem is thanks for any help love your videos keep them coming I try to learn any thing I can on the old Detroit's

      Make sure the lever on the bottom of the governor cover is engaging the fork in the governor. Also make sure the throttle lever on top of the governor is tight and not just spinning on the shaft.

    • @beaverdam3252

      @@Ol2Stroker yeah I have checked all of that another thing while the engine is running if I give it full throttle on the throttle lever it will barely throttle up but if I just hold the throttle wide open it will slowly start to rev an rpms will continue to climb slowly

      @Ol2Stroker 3 года назад +2

      Does it have an electronic or air shutdown that is stuck and trying to hold it from throttling up?

      @@Ol2Stroker nope it just has the throttle lever an the small lever for the shut Down the shut down lever works fine hit it an it shuts off the I can flip it the other way bump the starter an it will fire right up an idle i talked to a few other people they have no clue an call Detroit service center no help at all no one working at the Detroit shop works on 2 strokes but I do thank u alot for replying an helping I glad I found your channel

    • @Ol2Stroker
      @Ol2Stroker 3 года назад +2

      Here's what i want you to do. Remove the valve cover and start the engine. With the engine running start recording a video and operate the throttle lever on the top of the governor while videoing the rack and the rod that connects it to the gov. Upload it to you channel and send me a link. We'll get it figured out.

    Hey man, I gotta ask, is it true these absolutely require straight 40w? Or can i run t6 15w-40? Because I did the oil change with t6 and then stumbled upon old forums of guys saying it'll destroy the motor. What is your take/ experience? I have a 453 in an old excavator.

    Great video as always! However, Valve clearance .026 (twenty-six thou) ??? See factory service manual dated 1973 → Section 14.1 → Exhaust Valve Clearance Adjustment → Engines With Two-Valve Heads" → Step 5. Here it says to set it for .011... Could be a misprint. My copy of the later manual is incomplete and missing the relevant info so I can't verify the earlier copy. Thoughts?

    • @Ol2Stroker
      @Ol2Stroker Год назад +1

      That's for a 2 valve.

    • @jessiedazzle
      @jessiedazzle Год назад +1

      @@Ol2Stroker Ah, that explains it. I'm not familiar enough with the 4-valve head to have determined that this is what you have (not knowing what to look for + lack of light). I just checked the manual and verified that the clearance setting on a 4-valve is indeed more than double what it is for a 2-valve; this is surprising. Thanks for the response. Keep it up!

    Hi,i took your advice and disconnected the throddle delay,at first i thought i couldnt adjust it,but now im really stuck,where i did a running the rack and adjusted the governor gap,they were all off,
    But now puzzled as the injectors after the job,they are close to full fuel at idle,and when i push the throttle fully the injectors stay at full fuel from quarter throttle to full throttle,when i ran the rack i had the max speed,full throttle ,i backed off the buffer screw,(but i did not back off the idle screw as the manual dont mention it) so now im not sure if something is wrong, is this normal ?,does the engine start like this then it idles out on its own? the stop lever does bring the rack to no fuel but then goes right back up to almost full fuel and then when i press the throttle just a quarter full the rack is at fuel fuel,is there something wrong or is this normal?

    • @Ol2Stroker
      @Ol2Stroker 3 года назад +3

      That's definitely not right. You gotta back off the idle after u set the gap before you run the rack
