I don't think the bass in the recording is improvised and not too rehearsed. In the making of footage Jason can be seen trying more busy version of the bassline, with the slide and some chromatic stuff but they ended up "streamlining" a lot of the bass parts for this album, that's why it is what it is, a set repeating pattern for every part and the only variations are the fills at the end of the choruses.
It's the Rob Cavallo method. The secret to really heavy sounding songs is the bass playing the root almost like an extension of the rhythm guitar. It works, but it makes for some boring basslines. Rob's focus as a producer is on the whole song and not one specific part and given the intention of this record to sound heavy, it was probably on Bob Rock's mind too.
Thanks for the straight ahead motivating bass lesson to practice with! Lots of helpful thumbnail tips. Great tip on locking in with drums / snare. I’ve been learning guitar creeping up on 4 years now and started bass recently with Lemmy’s Ace Of Spades ♠️ I saw Jack White a couple nights ago and figured out my own version of Astro on bass. I started late at 58, better late than not…
Hey thanks so much for this. You clarified a few parts I couldn't figure out. Great video! I am a (crappy) 59 yo guitar player but started on bass in the 80s. I had a late '70s Goya lawsuit jazz bass -- sold it for my first guitar. 35 years later in a random Guitar Center search I found my high school bass and bought it back haha. So now trying to remember how to play!
Thank you for this amazing video! I’ve been wanting to learn this song for ages! Thanks for covering it and now I understand the tabs! Keep rocking on!
Hey, i just started to play bass and im having a little bit of trouble with this song. At 1:00 you play -0-0-0-6-5-5-5. I don't really know how to read tabs or sheet music, but are you playing all of the notes on the same string or are they different?
With the bass guitar highlighted, this iconic Metallica track eerily sounds like Lunachicks' Insomnia in parts. If there's any justice in the music world, Metallica should have jammed with Lunachicks back in the 1996 Grammy's instead of with Lady Gaga in 2017. 🤔 But at least we have this really righteous bass tutorial. ❤
If there is a parallel universe where Metallica and Lunachicks got a Grammy and performed together back in 1996, I bet Jason Newsted will be more respected by the rest of Metallica given how influential his tone and technique were - i.e. just listen to Lunachicks' bass player Squid's tone and technique as a case-in-point. 🤔
Lunachicks and Metallica playing together reminds me of my girlfriend's joke she once told that God would never allow it because the resulting groove will be so heavy it would collapse the whole universe - which might explain the Metallica / Lady Gaga PA system malfunction during the 2017 Grammy's might be a "divine intervention".😆

It´s the same string. Remember every line is a string. Unless you see a change of string, its all happening in the same.
Sweet! Anything off Ride the Lightning would be much appreciated!!

@@laurentzduba1298 God mistook Lady Gaga for Theo Kogan and hence the PA system snafu of the 2017 Grammy's? 😆😆😆
I learned another watered down version of this song. I like this one better.
