One just as common is your wife will betray you for your son.

To be fair the original may as well be lost to time as in the early days of Greek myth all stories weren’t written down, they were remembered. It wasn’t until far later that myths began to be written down and by that time gods and stories could have been vastly different than what was originally spoken while only retaining key elements.

Because Zeus was actually dependent on his wife’s wisdom. This way he could steal her knowledge and power. Before he ate her he was the typical crass and horny Zeus, after he was much more cunning and wiser.

I actually have the book with the depiction of Athena springing out of Zeus' head, where it looks like he's pulling his hair out. Interesting stuff. That book actually says he had her transform into a mosquito, not a fly, but it just had to be a creature small enough for Metis to be swallowed up, so either one works.
But I thought the prophecy was that if it was a daughter he would be fine but if it was a son he would be deposed and so Zeus didn’t wanna risk it.
There's a major incoherence in this : Hephaestus. He is supposed to have been born by Hera who had grown tired of Zeus' infidelities and conceived him to spite him alone. Since Metis was Zeus' wife then, Hephaestus couldn't have been conceived. There's a major timeline issue here that always bothered me.
Well, Greek Mythos are anything but consistent. In some accounts it's Hephaestus who open the skull in some it's Prometheus.
Prometheus made more sense as Athena was born just few months after Olympians victory in Titanomachy and at that time Prometheus and Epimetheus were trusted Advisors of Zeus until Prometheus betrayed Zeus by stealing fire from Olympus and giving it to mankind.
Hephaestus was likely Zeus and Hera's first born or just Hera's alone depending on myth.
I don't think there's a timeline issue. Zeus ate a pregnant Metis and she gave birth inside of Zeus. Since Athena sprung out of Zeus full grown, that would mean that she grew up inside of Zeus. Meanwhile, Zeus married Hera, had his affairs and Hera had Haephastus, who would eventually release Athena
