I'm in the process hot and heavy in the greenhouse and DIDN'T REALIZE that my hubby brought home some Baker Creek rice seeds!! I LITERALLY FOUND THEM TODAY!!!! I'm going to do a self wicking pot for them just as an experiment to see if it works, I ALWAYS try something new every year to see how things grow, I appreciate your input and you have given me food for thought. Thank you and I'll let you know how my experiment works in about 100 days!!!👍👍👍 Never grew rice before..... HERE GOES NOTHING!!🤣🤣
I have threshed wheat by putting the heads in a coffee can with the bottom cut out and replaced by 1/4" hardware cloth. That takes time, but would work well for small quantities of wheat. The problem with rice--and the reason I have never considered growing it--is that the hulls hold pretty hard to the seed. Maybe you could rub the grains between a couple of pieces of wire window screen to scrape off the hulls?
So happy you did this video! 2nd year I’ve tried all the internet tips & nothing worked (also not buying a machine! Lol!). I’m good having seed to grow beautiful plants!
Hi I am new to your channel and I can not wait to start my own tiny farm. I want to grow rice and many other kinds of foods. I plan to purchase my new home next year. Your videos are amazing! Keep up the great work! I live in Florida so I’m hoping the weather helps out when I start growing. Thank you for all you do!
Hi! Hope you are well! Thank you for your video. I have a hard time to get rice seeds. Could you advise me please where I can buy them? Thank you. (In amazon they sell you in packages of 20 seeds!)
What if you turned the bucket on its side while running the drill? That would bring more of the rice in contact with the high-velocity parts of the chain.
What if you tried rolling the seed between your two silicone mats for a little while and then putting it in there and whipping it around with the chain and see what happens like maybe just loosen the hull a little bit and see if it works.
I’ve tried, it doesn’t work. You really need a proper defiling device to be harvest efficiently for consumption. I’m going to continue to grow it for the seed to grow again the next year. It doesn’t have to be about eating it.
Try two wood cutting boards and invent something don't let this stop you from growing rice it amazing. Question ❓ where to buy a bulk of long grain where I bought it I won't go back because they have bad shipping and don't pack it right
I succeeded last Summer (2021) in growing rice by following your instructions - Thank you. After your harvest, what do you do with the plant and soil? I am getting ready to plant my 2022 rice crop. I cut the dead leaves to use for compost and mulch. Also emptied the pot (lots of roots) and will add new composted humus. Is that what you do? Thank you.
Here we sundried rice then we pound it with pestle and mortar...a big one. Then we wind them to let the husk flew away

That’s awesome! Yes you will have a different schedule for planting than me. In florida you can start tomatoes in February!
use a wooden mortar and pestel. our ancestors used them to dehull rice, my grandparents had one before.
Hello Miss, what I recommend is the garlic grinder, made of stone.
I am indigenous Montagnard Jarai tribe I grown in pot when I was live in Florida they grow so beautiful I keep the seed for next year
Love it!
I think your rice is beautiful when it's growing in your pots!
Thanks about your video, it's beautiful 😊
I too think that the rice grown in pots is beautiful. Question, when planting in May do you plant the rice with the hull on?
Yes you leave the hulk on for growing.
Cool video Brie!!😮
Dang, self sustainable crop dreams dashed. We eat a cup of rice a day most days of the year. I'd need a lot of land to make that viable 😅
I think I’ve figured out how to get it dehulled! Par-boil it!
You have to dry the rice very well to get the hulls off easier. I gave up on water paddy type planters, and grow dry land rice.
Thank you for the video! Where do you get your 7gal pots with no holes?
Any box store has them. I got these at lowes.

Maybe a string trimmer weed whacker could beat the seeds out?
Ohhh good idea!
It's a good idea, I'd be concerned about nylon microplastics... Thoughts?

How long does it take from start to harvest? Thank you.
Generally 100 days
@@BrieThePlantLady thank you.
Maybe shaking it in a jar with a marble might work? Idk I’m gonna try it

To paraphrase: " Rice-a-Roni, Brie the Plant Lady Treat." 👍😄🌾
😂😂😂🌾🌾🌾💚💚💚
Can you plant rice at anytime of season?
No it’s a warm season annual. It needs to grow through the summer.
What about putting in a kitchen aid eith a whisk or kneading attachment?
I tried- it broke the seeds and didn’t remove the hull
I live on a creek ? Thought it might work ? But..
No it needs to be full sun constant moisture- not moving water.
I think you have to parch the grains first, then hull them.
How long is the harvest waiting time?
three to four months

I just add them to the garden and they break down.
great
How often do you water them
In the summer daily if we don’t get rain.
I grew rice from store bought organic rice.
That’s great that it germinated for you. Generally unprocessed rice seed is best growing.
you can use the traditional way to peel the hull of the rice ruclips.net/user/shortsIEsMm70yK0w
Do you rice seed for sale? Having a hard time finding seed.
I will have seed available at the spring open garden on May 13. I only sell Seed at in person events- no mail order
