" I don't want medicine to be the only thing I love" wow thanks for being so honest this is exactly how I feel. I was so interested in Ortho but I I'm realizing that I prefer PMR. I'm about to start 3rd year and I'll be doing my clerkship at Kern medical in Bakersfield, Ca
Congratulations Jenny! This video is so old but I am glad to have come across it just when I needed it. I'm about to choose my specialty and the three choices that I am juggling are exactly the same as yours! I'm glad that I got some better insight from your end. Thank you and wish you all the best!
As a pharmacist who is a woman, I enjoy seeing you succeed in what you are setting out to do! Best of luck and you sound like you would be delightful to work with 😊
Congratulations Jenny!! As a non-trad pre-med, I've been watching your videos and they really inspire me to continue the journey and keep working hard! I'm interested in family medicine too and thought it was cool to see you match it :)
I been following you Jenny and I always find your videos informative, interesting and inspiring. Congratulations on matching into your first pick! You're going to be a great family doctor. I would trust you with my health lol and So awesome that it was all women that matched into general surgery!
Just listening to you list off what you wanted in your career definitely sounds like it will line up perfectly with family medicine. So proud of you! congrats!
Came across your IG earlier today and couldn't help but watch some of your videos as I embark on the interview trail for FM! I couldn't agree more with many of the sentiments you shared in this video, and I couldn't be more excited for having chosen a specialty as stimulating as FM!
Hi Jenny. I ran across your channel when I was looking at other medical school videos. I am very glad I came across your channel because I am currently trying to become a doctor. I applied to only MD schools last year, but didn't get in anywhere (I'm a non trad). When I applied I was still under the impression that there is a strong bias for MDs to further specialize and i am very interested in doing a surgical specialty. I am now going to reapply to schools this year, and will be applying to MD and DO schools. Your channel has explained the DO school curriculum and experience much better and I am now more open to whatever may be. Your channel has further solidified my idea that I can do whatever I want as a DO or an MD. The end goal is the same -- I will be a doctor, I will be treating patients, and I will be making a difference. So thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing, I totally can relate, my first choice was OB, then surgery but I think my decision will be family medicine with focus on women's health. I'm also interested in global health and preventative medicine, and plus I would want to enjoy my personal life :) Best wishes to you.
Amazing post as usually Jenny! I'm about to start med school at PNWU in the fall and Im very excited but also super nervous! Hearing your stories and now seeing your success is such an inspiration for me! Best of luck in Residency and keep the videos coming!
First of all, congratulations!! Interesting for me to watch because I went through the exact same stages -- obgyn -> surgery -> FM as final choice; so crazy how much I could relate. Second, and completely off topic, I LOOOVE your makeup in this video. You should do a little tutorial if you're up for it. Best of luck!
+Alex Januz Thanks you!! I've tried filming make up looks before but I always feel like the camera quality doesn't do it justice. But maybe one day I'll take another wack at it.
I can relate to your feelings about surgery. I have always thought that I want to go into surgery because I like working with my hands too. But I also want to be able to have a life outside of medicine. I was also concerned about applying to DO schools if I wanted to be a surgeon. I have also considered dermatology, but I guess I'll have to see once I go to med school.
+Brice Bouffard There are a lot of sub specialties of surgery like ophthalmology (which has a pretty clutch lifestyle) - those are things you'll just have to look into. And as long as you do well in med school, score high on board exams, you should have no concerns.
Hi Jenny, Congratulating!!!!!😄 I absolutely enjoy watching your videos. I was wondering if you would ever think about making a video, talking about what it is like to have rotations in family medicine. In detail like what you do, the hours, and the experience in general. As well as, what you did when you shadowed an O.D physician before medical school. Thank You.
+Sofia Hernandez Thank you so much! I will definitely try to make a more in depth video about family medicine. It's just somewhat difficult because you can do so many different things as an FM doc depending on what type of practice you belong to. Example private practice will differ from FM Internest, will differ from those working in groups.
Congratulations!! Been watching your vids for awhile I'm currently an FM intern right now and I did the AOA match as well it's an amazing feeling knowing you matched at your top choice. You'll do great next year, it's tiring but also fun =] good luck!!
Family Medicine!!! You are a rockstar! ...and you have the most flexibility with your practice out of EVERYONE! Patients deserve family physicians with all the advanced comprehensive training you'll have to offer. Congratulations!!!
New here and so glad I found your channel! Congrats on all you have accomplished! I'll be a first year MSTP this year with a new baby (due in march) and your videos have been so helpful and fun to watch!
Im glad you got what you wanted!! I work in a clinic... so now I KNOW I dont want to be in family medicine. Maybe it's cause I live in a small town, but I find its much less "actual medicine" and more family problems you deal with
+Kaynen Brown It's crazy when your journey is documented. The change is so gradual it's hard to see in the moment but when I look back at old videos I'm like 😳 lol thanks for your continued support
Congratulations! I'm a new subscriber, and find your videos inspiring and motivational :) I'm currently in my 3rd year at university, completing a psychology degree. I have another 3 years to go until I start 2 years of supervisional practice. I am also definitely going to do my phd in psychology, which I am looking forward to. I was originally planning on going to med school and specialising in psychiatry, but quickly realised that I was actually extremely passionate about clinical neuropsychology :) I'm so happy that you have found your specialty, and I have no doubts that you're going to be an amazing family medicine doctor! Wish you the best of luck :)
+tess scott I went to a very underserved public school. So I didn't have many options with classes. Plus I was on the business rout in high school. The only medical related classes I took were general chemistry and a physiology class. Lol
Hey Jenny . First of all Congrats on ur matching : ) . And u are so right about Surgery! it just hit me that I was only interested about the superficial suturing rather than opening up the abdomen or anything . For a while I was wondering if I should do vascular surgery as I got a chance in my college to assist in it . but now that I think about it it's just the hands on thing I like but not really into the whole aspect of surgery as whole . Thank u so much for enlightening Me !! :D I have been struggling for the past 3-4 yrs about this decision regarding surgery . And u gave me a new idea about Family medicine which I never thought off all this while as my mind was clouded with surgery! Thanks a lot really ! And I think the same as well regarding having a life other my career like family and travel and FooD of course :p I'm so happy I came across ur video randomly checking for how to choose speciality ! I would like to know more about family medicine from ur future videos :)
AHHHHH CONGRATULATIONS JENNY!! This video actually really helped me determine what I may want to specialize in after I finish med school (I'm currently in High School). I was wondering if you could maybe make a video on how to afford/pay for college med school and maybe some tips and tricks? Congrats again!!
I really enjoy the how easily relatable you are and the succinct way you express your experiences. I usually like to watch one of your videos when I have had a particularly trying day, and need to have a visual of the end game. I appreciate the hard work and time that it takes to relay so many different layers of your life. Quick question: when did you start studying for the MCAT? I am in my sophomore year of undergrad, I was thinking I should wait until after ochem series?
Can you add some video about other specialties? Like pros and cons. Why didn't you choose other ones like oncology etc. thanks. Congrats about your match :)
Hi Jenny! I'm from Brazil and I'm looking forward to taking the USMLE exam. I am also a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy so I would love if you could make a video about the differences and similarities between the residency program in the US and the show!! Thanks for now. XO, Lili
CONGRATS JENNY!!! i'm a couple days late, but I just discovered your channel and I really appreciate everything you've shared! i'm in nursing school now, and but I find myself being drawn into medicine. I love that nursing is centered around patient care, and doctors focus more on the medicine. Can you explain that a little more? shouldn't all of healthcare be patient centered? my speciality doctor is a d.o. and it's fantastic that its more holistic-- exactly what i'm looking for. if you had any recommendations or advice for nurses going into medicine, specifically d.o. programs, please share your thoughts! thanks so much!
PLEASE make a video on choosing your specialty and the process and all that! im really confused about like pre-med and med school and courses and how it all works, (im in grade 10) and want to be a medical oncologist - as well what specialty does that fit into??
Hey Jenny! I'm totally with you regarding the whole idea of wanting to do preventative care, wanting to have continuity with patients, and just going with primary care. I'm a first year med student (MD), and I'm in love with Ob-Gyn, but the parts that excite me are more the embryology, the preventative care, the women's health. I want to use some type of primary care abroad in Asia to the community that matters to me most, and I'm just trying to find my options. I also love IM, ophthalmology, and EM. But just so many options. Thanks for sharing your story and your thoughts on everything! I can't wait to get past these first few years and get to my clinicals to actually get some hands on practice. Any thoughts, suggestions or advice you can give a 1st year?
My cousins specialized in psychiatry and cardiology. I'm a biology major right now, hopefully I'll be in medical school soon. Congrats and Good Luck. 😃
congratulations i am so happy for you , i hope you a nice life i thing surgery is good but need to work more but family medicine is normal speciality .
Congratulations I'm so happy for you and I'm so proud that females are being matched to those residences. I'm going to a medical school in Ethiopia but we don't have the specialty that I want in the country and I'm really confused about what to do when I'm done with Medical School because I don't want to go for anything that is available instead of doing what I love😪
Congratulations on your specialty! You are going to do great things! How did you realize what specialties you really liked? I am also really interested in general surgery, but I want to broaden my horizon and see what specialties there are before I set my mind fully on surgery. However I find it really hard to imagine what other specialties would suit me because I always imagined becoming a surgeon. And there are a lot of specialties that I find interesting, but I can not always see myself doing that for the rest of my life. And I was wondering if you have some tips for me to help me 'broaden my horizon'?
+Margaux Van Maele I asked my school to schedule all the rotations that I thought I may be interested in earlier on during the year. This way it allowed me to really figure out what I wanted earlier on, or at least rule out specialties. You really just have to immerse yourself in the speciality before you really know.
Congratulations! I want to be a surgeon but I'm concerned about my personal life because I want to have a family and be there for them but I also want to be a surgeon, particularly a cardiovascular surgeon so im nervous if I'll have a life outside
Hi Jenni! When you said you are those person who enjoy medicine but also their family, I saw myself in you. In my case, I am 24 and just finished my bachelor in Bio. I will apply next year. But Iam having troubles choosing btw med school and PA. I love medicine but I don't see myself spending most of my time as a doctor instead of having a good time with my family. And I am also afraid to lose interest in the speciality. I am not sure about what area I love the most. Becoming a doctor is a long and sacrificed path. I would like to ask why did you choose becoming a doctor instead of a PA if both can do the same thing and PA have the flexibility of working in different areas of medicine. I will appreciate your advice. :)
Very late congratulations on matching lol; this video was extremely helpful thank you 🙏🏾 I’m probably going to binge watch all your videos soon lolololol
I want to be a doctor but my problem is I’m a bit squeamish. I don’t like needles or surgery and such. I mean I can watch but it’ll bother me. Also, I feel that when it comes to me doing it, I won’t be able to. It scares me so much that that will be my downfall. I feel like I can do it, though. Like I can grow to the point of it not bothering me. What do you think?
Jenny so if you get matched for something you didn't want can you change it ? let's say you wanted general surgery instead of family medicine could u some how. change it? also if you want to match into something more specific in general surgery like ped(kids) or oncology when would u choose that? could you choose that? And Thanks for your videos ! Congrats :)
Hey jenny... I got ur video suggestion after 3 years 🙈crazyy.. Anyway I'm a doctor in India and I recently got admission for dermatology residency in India. Like u, I was super confused, between obgyn/paeds/derm. I finally zeroed in on derm thinking about the possibility to do both medicine and surgery together as well as leading a balanced personal life. Choosing residency is seriously stressful. More stressful than choosing your life partner 🙈😂😂😂
CONGRATS JENNY!! so amazing that you matched your first choice! I think you're going to make a great family med physician :D
+TheStriveToFit Thanks Jamie! Have you figured out what you wanted to do yet?
Still between obgyn, surgery and EM. It feels like the most difficult decision of my life x_x
TheStriveToFit good luck
ahhh I watch you both it's so exciting to see you on her video

Hi, I am med student from Brazil. Congrats for your choice! I like surgery a lot, but I enjoy living my life outside medicine as well.

Absolutely amazing! Congratulations and thank you for being SUCH an inspiration to aspiring doctors!
+Christine Schafer Thank you so much for watching!

Hi Jenny, Congratulating!!!!!😄
I absolutely enjoy watching your videos.
Congrats on matching. You will be a fab doctor!
Congrats!! Hopefully this is me next year. Wishing you much success!!
Congratulations on your match! I'm happy to see so many EM matches too.
Congrats Jenny! The field of family medicine is very lucky to have you. :)

Iam currently a biology major in college. Iam still trying to decide whether to go into pediatrics or obstetrics and gynecology. I love them both.
Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great choice..... The best choice of my life. Enjoy it while it lasts.
This was posted on my birthday, but congrats!
Congrats! Did you take both the COMLEX and USMLE?
Congratulations! I want to be a surgeon but I'm concerned about my personal life because I want to have a family and be there for them but I also want to be a surgeon, particularly a cardiovascular surgeon so im nervous if I'll have a life outside
Congratulations!!! :)
Very late congratulations on matching lol; this video was extremely helpful thank you 🙏🏾
I’m probably going to binge watch all your videos soon lolololol
Congrats ❤️
congrats!!!
+queen onyejekwe Thank you 😁
Congrats!
could you upload more about plastic surgery thanks and congratulations love 😘
I want to be a doctor but my problem is I’m a bit squeamish. I don’t like needles or surgery and such. I mean I can watch but it’ll bother me. Also, I feel that when it comes to me doing it, I won’t be able to. It scares me so much that that will be my downfall. I feel like I can do it, though. Like I can grow to the point of it not bothering me. What do you think?
CONGRATULATIONS x
Totally agree!! DERM is an amazing specialty. Congratulations
