You should really talk about the time Isiah bought the Continental Basketball Association. It’s one thing to be a bad GM, it’s quite another to drive an entire LEAGUE into bankruptcy in the space of 18 months.
Isiah maybe a bad GM overall, but he did drafted some real studs. Damon Stoudamire Marcus Camby Tracy McGrady David Lee Channing Frye Nate Robinson Trevor Ariza
we all know isaiah was a scapegoat, the knicks were handcuffed by shiznit contracts way before i.t. came on board, the allan houston contract was just the tip of the iceberg, they've continued to suck way after i.t. got fired so obviously it is ownership
Do one about Phil Jackson's Tenure with the Knicks. He set us back a couple years again... The Noah signing, Derek Fisher, trading chandler, JR, Shump, and Young Timmy Jr for peanuts... It was horrible...
IT ws the best little guard to have ever played. He was the worst GM ever. He just didn't have the ability to blend talent at the GM level. But as a coach his players played hard. As a GM he hired Larry Brown who tried to take over the team and franchise. Brown tried to backstab him. The owner sided with IT. George Karl started a feud with him. And Marbury was a jerk. He didn't have support and the ugliest woman in the world won a sexual harassment suit against him. Really?
IT was not the worst gm ever, you dont know what you are talking about. scott layden who was working for the knicks before zeke traded the new york icon ewing to sonics, traded camby and nene for mcdyess who played less than 20 games in total for new york, gave that horrible allan houston contract, overpaid bunch of former utah jazz bums and fucked this team up for years. And nobody even talks about this bum, the media loves talking shit when its a famous person making mistakes.
David Khan has to be worst GM of all time. The guy had the #5 and 6 pick in the 2009 draft and picked 2 PG's back to back...Ricky Rubio and Johnny Flynn
Jatrell Williams Billy king he ruined two franchises Sixers in the Nets. also the general manager before Isaiah Thomas with the NY Knicks Scott Layden from 1999-2004 was absolutely atrocious also.
I remember this very well. Stephen A. Smith used to make a living off trashing Marbury and Isiah, lmao. these videos that talk about forgotten stories from the league are good.
Berri & Schmidt use a whole chapter discussing ITs tenure in NY in their book "Stumbling wins". Well worth a read. Basically their conclusion is that: Yes, IT made a lot of poor decisions, but, another GM is likely to have made the same mistakes.
Got to say it has been very difficult to be a knicks fan, I hope Knox and our new coach David will help get us back to at least being a great defensive team.
Honestly I think all of IT's bad decisions came as a result of the Stephon Marbury trade bungle. A trade that would've worked out under most situations, but alas, it was Stephon Marbury. The fallout from this probably threw off any game he had as a GM especially since this was one of his very first big moves. I think IT's next moves (signing James and Brown) represented a panicked effort to try and make a 360 degree turn from the Stephon Marbury trade in hopes that veteran leadership combined with a completely nontraditional way of measuring player success (as in Jerome James) was a better formula for success (since Stephon Marbury, under traditional metrics, failed spectacularly, but only for that specific instance). Unfortunately, instead of finding success, IT kept trying to make extreme pivots to atone for his mistakes, which only led to more mistakes that needed atoning for.
Good video. But there are a few things worth mentioning: Isiah Thomas ALWAYS wanted to coach the Knicks and underminded Larry Brown the whole time. Nobody, I mean nobody had Renaldo Balkman on their draft board! I still remember Jay Bilas commenting how poor a draft decision this was when his name was called. Even after Isiah was fired he still had Dolan's ear as a consultant. This just goes to show you what kind of owner Dolan is. After all this, can you point to one time when Isiah took any real responsibility for his actions or the state of the Knicks?
The one really funny thing that comes to mind when I think of the Knicks is their first round game they were in against the Miami Heat with LeBron and Wade. The heat lost that game at the buzzer at MSG and somebody drops confetti and balloons on to the court for the one and only win the Knicks have had in nearly 10 years
I’ll never understand why organizations continue to think that great players will be great executives. They are two opposite ends of the spectrum. There should be a video like this about Matt Millen’s time as the Detroit Lions “President and CEO”...
Here's a little information, Isiah was supposed take over the Detroit Pistons after retiring in 1994 however had a falling out with then owner William Davidson, that job would end up going to Joe Dumars 6 years later who would deliver us another NBA title in 2004. I seen an article that broke down draft picks and ranked Isiah Thomas as one of the better ones. If Isiah just committed to a full rebuild, no shortcuts, loaded up on draft picks and built the team that way, things likely would have been different. Instead just had an infatuation with big names, untapped potential which is fine if you're taking a no risk flyer on a player, not giving up unprotected draft picks.
If Brown had been retained and Thomas shown the door, the K's would have had a shot at improving over time. And it wasn't a "reign of terror" but of "error." Thx for posting.
He's basically a medicine that seem to help you get better at first, but then it made the illness worsen after a while. This sums up the Knicks during that time, the first year with him was promising as he helped got them to the playoffs (though as a last seed) and were leading the division for a while in 2005 but then...they died.
Dr0pkidd The only thing good Phil did was draft Kristaps and its too early to say about Frank, while Zeke had gotten some trafe assets in to get Melo whixh was a good idea in the first place Phil gave the Knicks for the first year of his job as GM was the franchise record in losses for a season in 65 losses, Zeke went and tanked just like Hinkie for the 76ers hell Hinkie is getting praise just saying that when Zeke got into New York they were going into a rebuild mode while in 2014 they weren't and still lost badly for 3 seasons straight he tried to get rid of Melo for the three years he was there which is pretty bad looking at the teams back then 65 losses 2015, 2016 still losing then in 2017 the worst superteam in the history of the NBA couldn't even get to playoff contention with the team they had and then they split and what you have is a washed-up Center in Noah, Kristaps, and the others they stood with the team, Phil even traded Hardaway Jr. to the Hawks and he came back because Phil got fired for 3 years he was there.
Being bad helped Phil out I think he's getting too much credit for number 4 overall pick. If the team didn't suck so bad they most likely wouldn't be in position to get him. He sucked or tanked either way anyone can tank a team.
In no way did Thomas tank just like Hinkie. Thomas traded away a lot of picks and got overrated scrubs in return, which is not something a tanking team ever does.
What about his tenure with Toronto? Drafting Damon Stoudamire, Marcus Camby, Tracy McGrady. I believe the NY issue was a terrible owner holding everyone back.
Phil Jackson at least tried to right the ship. The Knicks got better in each of his last 2 seasons. It was Steve Mills who ruined the triangle offense and Carmelo Anthony’s will to adapt to the triangle offense. Steve Mills was part of the organization from 2001 to 2009 and worst of all, it was Steve Mills who recommended that we bring Isiah Thomas to the big apple. Marbury was only good for a year with us and even then, it was just satisfactory. He didn’t lead us to a winning record and we were swept by the Nets in the opening round of the playoffs and since then, Marbury was terrible.
Andy, I do watch your vids and mostly enjoy them, but I have called you out and will again say... do some more research. You looked at stats for regular season but didn't bother to look at playoffs. The Jerome James deal was still pretty dumb, but there's a very simple reason he got that contract. Although he averaged only 4.9ppg, 3rpg & 1.4bpg in 16.6mpg in the 04/05 season, he then started 11 games for Seattle in the playoffs, averaging 12.5ppg, 6.8rpg, 1.8bpg in only 26.8mpg. Obviously this was too small a sample size and likely the result of matchups, (he did this against the Kings & Spurs who had pretty good big men at the time) when you questioned why the Knicks would ever do this, all I could think was 'Cause he had a good playoffs the year before'. It wasn't RIGHT, but that is 100% WHY. At least he did that. I'm a Raptors fan, and remember the 6 year, $24 million deal they gave to Yogi Stewart in 1999. If you ever do a video on "How the hell did they get that contract" look up his numbers and have yourself a good laugh. Dude was making the same money as PJ Brown & Tony Battie (who both averaged close to double doubles) FFS.
Not even close to the worst. He made a bunch of decent at the time deals that didnt pan out. Hindsight is 50/50. Compare him with some one like babcock or mj and he looks amazing.
what does this guy mean it took the knicks time to recover, they still haven't recovered and phil Jackson was 10 x worse and took 10 x the knicks money. Bring back Isiah if that's the case. Jeremy Lin come back we love you brother!
wazzamolloy1 I'm not a Knicks fan but I know Scott Layden who is the GM with the Knicks from 1999 to 2004 was absolutely atrocious also before Isaiah Thomas took over.
Free-agency wise, yes Zeke was horrible, but draft-wise and trade-wise, he was actually pretty decent. He drafted David Lee & Nate Robinson and made trades for Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford.
It seems like the latest is the worst. Due to Scott Layden being so low key, people seem to forget Layden. The era was horrible. Layden didn't do anything right. Isaiah at least drafted decent. I need to see if you did a Layden video.
No disrespect to Zeke but I think he's a perfect example of not every former player especially a Hall of Fame talent like him can't be successful although there are a few exceptions like with Jason Kidd recently leading the Mavs to the 2022 Western Conference Finals and of course Larry Bird who took the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals in all 3 seasons as coach including a Finals appearance in 2000.
They gave James that deal cuz in the playoffs that year he ended up starting cuz of injury 4 the Seattle Supersonics n he had a MONSTER series stat wise, they lost the series so that was the last impression anyone had of him b4 he became a FA that year yo, we 110% weren't the only team offering him big money that year smfh

What is up with New York professional sports teams with the colour orange having shit management? Knicks, Mets and Islanders.
lmao! the mets have not shaken the habit of signing past-their-prime vets who excelled in the hitter utopia known as the american league, although it is clear they were smart to move on from harvey(may his w.s. game 5 pitching heroics live on in memory though)
Or green. One need only look at the Jets’ history of drafting players.
You should really talk about the time Isiah bought the Continental Basketball Association. It’s one thing to be a bad GM, it’s quite another to drive an entire LEAGUE into bankruptcy in the space of 18 months.
HYEYBT I used to go to Gary Steelheads basketball all the time and it was fun the city of Gary built a huge stadium and now it’s a giant useless turd
Isiah maybe a bad GM overall, but he did drafted some real studs.
Damon Stoudamire
Marcus Camby
Tracy McGrady
David Lee
Channing Frye
Nate Robinson
Trevor Ariza
we all know isaiah was a scapegoat, the knicks were handcuffed by shiznit contracts way before i.t. came on board, the allan houston contract was just the tip of the iceberg, they've continued to suck way after i.t. got fired so obviously it is ownership
An alright video. This article really fleshes out the context behind some of these trades and signings.
Do one about Phil Jackson's Tenure with the Knicks. He set us back a couple years again... The Noah signing, Derek Fisher, trading chandler, JR, Shump, and Young Timmy Jr for peanuts... It was horrible...
Without Phil you wouldn’t have Porzingis
great video captain hindsight!
do a video like this on phil jackson
This was great. You should do one about the lakers' Buss family. How it went from Dr Buss, to Jim's destructive reign and now Jennie.
Congrats on 100k I been in here since 24k
David Khan has to be worst GM of all time. The guy had the #5 and 6 pick in the 2009 draft and picked 2 PG's back to back...Ricky Rubio and Johnny Flynn
Jatrell Williams Most GM's had Rubio as the number 1 rated pg at the draft.
Rubio wasn't going to come over right away. And he didn't...
Also I'm not saying that it was smart lol. Just that's why he did it.
Jatrell Williams Billy king he ruined two franchises Sixers in the Nets. also the general manager before Isaiah Thomas with the NY Knicks Scott Layden from 1999-2004 was absolutely atrocious also.
Two PGs back to back and neither one was Steph Curry, who went right after them. Yeah that's pretty bad.
I remember this very well. Stephen A. Smith used to make a living off trashing Marbury and Isiah, lmao. these videos that talk about forgotten stories from the league are good.
At least Isiah's first move as the executive of the Knicks wasn't signing a player WHO WAS ON CRACK!
I am glad you did this video. :)
Jerome James? As Bill Raftery might say, "Mail it in, Jerome!"
Berri & Schmidt use a whole chapter discussing ITs tenure in NY in their book "Stumbling wins". Well worth a read. Basically their conclusion is that: Yes, IT made a lot of poor decisions, but, another GM is likely to have made the same mistakes.
"Stumbling ON wins". Sorry.
There are many other GM's who ruined the Knicks. Still to this day.
Congrats on 💯k ‼️
Congrats on getting 100K!
Got to say it has been very difficult to be a knicks fan, I hope Knox and our new coach David will help get us back to at least being a great defensive team.
Omg 4 years later look what happened lol
Good video. But there are a few things worth mentioning:
Isiah Thomas ALWAYS wanted to coach the Knicks and underminded Larry Brown the whole time.
LOVE these Knicks videos!
Dang was gonna make a video on him too.... But I still loved it!
Isiah was just a scapegoat. It was all Dolan's fault.
At least Isiah has a drafted Hall of Famer to his name.
Isiah had good eye for talent. He consistently drafted quality draft picks.
Who did he draft
@@electrinatormusic7728 Tracy McGrady
@@electrinatormusic7728 also drafted Trevor Ariza in 2004, Frye, Lee & Robinson in 2005, Wilson Chandler in 2007
@@electrinatormusic7728 Damon Stoudemire.
Good thing Becky Hammon was not there as an assistant, she'd have Thomas leering at her with his tongue hanging out, playing pocket pool!
congrats on 100k
The one really funny thing that comes to mind when I think of the Knicks is their first round game they were in against the Miami Heat with LeBron and Wade. The heat lost that game at the buzzer at MSG and somebody drops confetti and balloons on to the court for the one and only win the Knicks have had in nearly 10 years
Hey Andy can you do a video on Laimbeer and the bad boys piston era?
Ground Beef There's already a few pretty good documentaries out there. Worth checking out because they interviewed the players too
That Amino AD was sliiiccckkk.
Do one on John Paxson/Gar Forman era in Chicago.
congrats on the 100k subscribers mate, btw we all know that your name is Andy by now xD
Billy King and it’s not even close
Lil Dagga Agreed
Scott Layden
Straight facts
Phil might be worse than Zeke
Victorthegreat74
Nope
Dontdoittoyoself anyone can tank a team, but not anyone can draft a superstar talent
@7:38 im convinced that Thomas made under the table deals on the contracts. He got a lil back end on them 50million dollars deals..
+Andy Hoops you should do what happened with Wally Sczerbiak carreer no one talks about him in youtube
What about David khan in Minnesota
What about his tenure with Toronto? Drafting Damon Stoudamire, Marcus Camby, Tracy McGrady. I believe the NY issue was a terrible owner holding everyone back.
Isiah Thomas, Phil Jackson and Billy King are the worst of all time ironically they destroyed NY based teams
Love vid best
It’s kinda weird how were able to trade a pick that far in the future (the 2010 Gordon Hayward pick) back in 2004
Protection stipulations most likely.
Renaldo Balkman banned in the Philippine Basketball
I mean without Phil you dont get kristaps
He did the same thing with the Raptors in their infancy.
Great topic
Free-agency wise, yes Zeke was horrible, but draft-wise and trade-wise, he was actually pretty decent. He drafted David Lee & Nate Robinson and made trades for Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford.
I’m a Knicks fan.... 😭
It seems like the latest is the worst. Due to Scott Layden being so low key, people seem to forget Layden. The era was horrible. Layden didn't do anything right. Isaiah at least drafted decent. I need to see if you did a Layden video.
Please do 5 quickest team rebuilds
Hey Andy, you forgot to mention the Allan Houston contract. It's considered to be one of the worst contracts in NBA history!
Lmao somehow I find this hilarious becuz it almost seems like by the way he’s smiling in the thumbnail, he did this all on purpose.
Billy King for the NETS😠
I would have thought it was Elgin Baylor with the Clippers.
Id be searching for criminal activity in those deals, on suspicion of geting cuts from large deals to bad players
